2. The root of Indie
• Indie is a type of music that originated from
the United Kingdom and the United States in
the 1980s.
• The characteristics of the Indie genre are
artists that are signed to independent record
labels. The term Indie is an abbreviation of the
word Independent.

3. What links does it have to other
genres?
• The Indie genre is derived from the alternative rock
genre. It then branched out to sub genres such as
indie pop, garage rock, Indie-folk, post-punk, and
new wave
• Some examples of Indie artists are Arctic Monkeys,
Two Door Cinema Club, Bombay bicycle club, the
kooks, 1975, Mumford and Sons. Many of them
started in the Indie scene, but some artists such as
Arctic Monkeys have moved onto the more
mainstream and pop side of the Indie culture.

4. Arctic Monkeys
• They are an indie band from Sheffield, who
formed in 2002 and belong to the label
Domino. They have just released their fifth
studio album called “AM”. The main genres
they are associated with are Indie rock; also
garage rock, psychedelic rock, garage rock and
post –punk revival.

5. Typical Listener
• With our own knowledge, the average
typical age of a listener to Indie music is
mid-teens to late twenties. The Indie
genre is quite male dominated, but
attracts both male and female audiences.

7. Two Door Cinema Club
• They are an Indie band from Northern Ireland, who formed in
2007 and belong to the labels Kitsune, Glassnote,
Cooperative, and Parlophone. They have released two studio
albums, one in 2010 and one in 2012. They have had eleven
singles and have performed in the 2012 London Olympics. The
main genres they are associated with are Indie rock, Dance
punk, new wave, and post-punk revival.
• With our own knowledge, the average typical age of a
listener to indie music is mid-teens to late twenties. The indie
genre has a mixture of male and female listeners.
