u-blox introduces LTE Cat M1 and NB-IoT multimode
module with quad band 2G fallback
u-blox, a provider in wireless and positioning modules and
chips, announced the SARA-R412M, an LTE Cat M1, NB-IoT,
and quad band 2G (EGPRS) module with worldwide coverage.
Measuring just 16 x 26 mm, the module is the world’s smallest
to provide both LTE and quad band EGPRS support in a single
design.
The flexibility extends further with dynamic system selection as
Cat M1, NB-IoT, and EGPRS in single mode or as a preferred
connection that does not require a module reboot to switch
between modes. It brings a rich feature suite optimised for
LPWA (low-power wide-area) IoT applications that require the
assurance of 2G connectivity to guarantee broad geographic
coverage, even in areas where LTE Cat M1 and NB-IoT are not
widely available yet.

WaterBit uses AT&T connectivity in IoT irrigation
solution to help farmers grow more with less
WaterBit and AT&T are working to make automated irrigation
easier for growers. WaterBit chose AT&T to provide secure
connectivity to its autonomous irrigation solution. The smart
irrigation solution aims to help farmers increase yields and
conserve resources.
In-field data collection of soil moisture and nutrients gives
farmers near real-time insight into crop conditions. Integrating
data collection with WaterBit’s cloud-based software lets
growers monitor and analyse soil moisture, as well as plan and
control irrigation with pinpoint accuracy.
“With WaterBit, precision and science will better inform water
delivery and translate into higher yields that can be sustained,”
said Chandler Bennett, production manager at Madison Farms, a
WaterBit customer.

Multi-vendor Intent-Based Analytics delivered by Apstra to
prevent data centre network outages and gray failures
Apstra® Inc. has launched version 2.1 of AOS® with Intent-Based Analytics™ (IBA). AOS
IBA embeds automated big data analytics into its real-time continuous validation
capability. This provides the control that companies require as they upgrade their network
infrastructures to address their digital transformation and IoT goals.
Apstra AOS 2.1 allows network operators to simplify their network operations and realise
log-scale improvements in the CapEx, OpEx and capacity of their network infrastructure.
Apstra IBA allows network operators to specify exactly how they expect their network to
operate and continuously validates the network operators’ intent, generating anomalies
when it detects a deviation. Apstra’s approach works across vendors and reduces the time,
cost and risk of network operations by alerting the network operator of specific insights
required to validate that the network is operating as intended.
The status quo is to sift through mountains of raw telemetry and stare at network
visualisations 24/7 to detect unusual patterns. Sasha Ratkovic, Apstra CTO and founder
detailed Intent-Based Analytics in a blog post in 2017.

Autonomy enters park assist systems to raise
convenience and parking efficiency
Enhanced park assist systems are now being developed to enable the vehicle to park itself
without requiring the driver to be present in the cabin. First deployments of remote park
assist aim to park the vehicle where there is insufficient room for the driver to open the
door.
With the arrival of autonomous driving applications, such as highway cruise control,
developments of new advanced park assist systems will realise further benefits from
autonomy. They include:
● The parking of larger, modern vehicles in small, unchanged parking spaces and thus enhances driver
confidence and lowers insurance cost;
● The vehicle to drive itself to an available parking space and thus enhances convenience to the driver
and reduces fuel consumption, harmful emissions and traffic congestion; and
● To enable more vehicles to be parked in the same area and thus raises efficiency in parking operations
and maximises revenue for operators.

Ericsson to Implement Smart City Technology in Dallas
The company’s smart city technology solution will give cities the ability to aggregate and
analyze real-time data to control traffic lights and more.
In Ericsson’s vision, Dallas’ smart city journey as it relates to traffic management could
eventually look something like this: when a car crash takes place at an intersection, a
notification is sent to the 911 center and includes a link to a camera feed to lend better
information on what’s happening to ensure optimal response. Smart lighting could turn up
brighter to ensure better vision for first responders, and the right services dispatched to fix
any damaged infrastructure.

Farmers improve management and crop yields with IoT
To the casual observer, growing crops is fairly straightforward: Plant the seed, add fertilizer
and water, wait (and wait), and harvest. The reality is more complex, especially when crops
span hundreds, thousands, or tens of thousands of acres. This is why Farmers Edge is
leveraging the power of IoT to help farmers manage operations more effectively and track
historical trends in weather patterns, crop yields, and market conditions to position their
farm for the future.
Farmers Edge deploys remote weather stations and telematics devices on a farmer’s land
and equipment. These devices transmit data to Azure IoT Hub, where it is analyzed using
artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms. With the insights they glean,
farmers can more easily monitor soil conditions and environmental variables like wind
direction and precipitation levels. And with access to real-time data, they can fine-tune
variables such as the best variant of seed to plant, or the type and amount of fertilizer to
use in a particular field or field quadrant, based on current nutrient levels.

Bosch, Vodafone, and Huawei enable smart cars to
communicate with each other
It is Friday afternoon, and the traffic on the A9 freeway near Munich
is congested. Navigation requires complete concentration. Other
vehicles are constantly cutting in front of the car, forcing the driver
to brake abruptly − which is the cause of many accidents, slow-
moving traffic, and stress.
Intelligent mobile telephony can alleviate some of these problems
and help prevent potentially dangerous driving situations from
becoming even more critical. Known as Cellular-V2X (vehicle to
everything), the technology makes it possible for a car to
communicate with other vehicles and its surroundings through
mobile telephony.

Smart City street lighting solution for the first smart
marina in the Baltic Sea region
Smart City solutions are becoming a major part of every city. These
solutions would enable cities, including harbours to reduce costs and
optimise operations as well to increase quality of life and overall
safety. The most recent yacht harbour of Tallinn is located at the
Western coast of Kopli Gulf at the beautiful Kakumäe peninsula. Its
unique and high-tech infrastructure makes Haven Kakumäe the most
complete and modern maritime centre of the Baltic region.
The project of the Kakumäe marina focuses on security with the
inclusion of the finest technologies and the sustainable use of
resources. The production and installation of pontoons at the harbour
were completed in autumn 2016 and in June this year the marina was
opened to the public.
In the second stage, a modern vessel hotel and the marina’s

Controlling quality of irrigation water with IoT to
improve crops production
The quality of irrigation water, as well as the correct
management of water resources, is essential for the
productivity and efficiency of the crops. Controlling and
analysing water before irrigating is crucial and its quality
may vary significantly depending on the time of the year. So
frequent measurements are recommended.
This platform gives the irrigators access to real-time
information on water quality to help decision-making in
aspects such as the opening and closing of gates or the
hours when water quality is higher. Additionally, manual
collection is not necessary anymore so access to the
information is now easier and quicker.
