8. A closer look: Chef
Courses became Chef's #1 lead generator by
drawing developers to Chef's website and giving
Chef plenty of opportunities to subtly promote
their brand and their product as devs worked
through courses
How did Chef succeed with
courses?
They were able to attract over 150,000 developers
to take their courses
They offered not just courses on their products,
but also courses on the fundamentals: Git, Ruby,
Bash scripting
9. Courses
The winning combo of tutorials, blog posts, and courses
are stronger together than any of them are alone.

Tutorials

12. No developer personas or audience segmentation
Know your target audience and desired outcomes to ensure you pick the right course topics.
Common pitfalls companies
make when launching dev
education programs
Not considering the bigger picture
Treating the different types of DevEd content as separate things instead of a unified whole is
ineffective. Ideally, aim to use blogs and tutorials to drive developers to your courses (and use blogs
and tutorials to follow up after devs finish courses)
No plan to track learner success
If you don't plan this up front, you might miss out on key data and metrics. Track how many learners
start the course, reach checkpoints, and abandon your courses and make adjustments accordingly.
13. How do you measure the
success of DevEd?
Start with clear objectives and track toward them
Look at the numbers—
How many have enrolled
How are users engaging
Are they earning badges
What is the completion rate
Are they using labs
KPIs and metrics to track—
Revenue growth
Product adoption
Community growth and engagement
14. Know their wants and needs and problems they are trying to solve. This will help you understand the
topics your developer education program should target.
How can companies prepare for the
increased demand for developer
education programs?
Invest in scalable authoring and delivery platform for courses
Platform that facilitates continually updating content, and labs for offering on-demand hands-on
learning experiences.
Build out personas for your target audiences
Track developer progression through your DevEd program
If possible, track developer progress from the first blog post they read through to course signup and
completion. Use this data to understand what is working and make adjustments to what's not
working.
