12. CONSOLE REVIEWS
PS4
The visuals on the ps4 are amazing when compared to the previous console and even surpass
those of the Xbox one and Remote Play is brilliant but the extra processing power really stands
out above everything else. Jumping from a game into an application like Netflix or vice versa is
quicker, smoother and just more satisfying than before. Even the software updates are less
obtrusive and take a lot less time than they do on the PS3
The new controller is also a major improvement over the ps3 controller. Its so much easier to hod
and doesn’t feel uncomfortable after a few hours of gaming. The only downside really is the low
battery life .
13. Xbox one:
There's no escaping it; the Xbox One is huge. It dwarfs the PlayStation 4, as well
as both previous-generation systems, and could rival some AV amplifiers for the
space it will take up underneath your TV. The angular lines, lack of physical
buttons and combination of glossy and matt plastics give it an imposing, almost
monolithic appearance.
The design leaves plenty of room for the internal components to breathe; after
the notorious Xbox 360 Red Ring of Death, Microsoft has taken no chances when
it comes to heat with the Xbox One. An oversized CPU heatsink and fan,
positioned directly below a massive exhaust vent, should ensure the console
doesn't overheat even after hours of continuous gaming. It was barely audible
when setting up the console for the first time and we struggled to hear it even
after a full day of testing. Temperatures never exceed more than 50 degrees
centigrade, whether you're watching TV or playing games.

14. Wii U
Say what else you like about it, but the Wii U is a seriously impressive bit of
console engineering. It's a few inches deeper and slightly taller and wider than the
Wii, but still very compact and extremely quiet – even more so than the thin and
light PS3. The front hosts the slot-loading optical drive, Power, Eject and
Controller pairing buttons and – beneath a flap – two USB 2.0 ports and an SD
Memory Card slot. At the back you’ll find an HDMI output, an AV Multi Out
port, a connector for the new, slightly smaller Sensor Bar and two more USB 2.0
ports. The latter will support external USB hard disks of up to 2TB in size,
though they’ll need their own power supply.
It's an unobtrusive unit, but then Wii U"s selling point isn't so much the console
as the bundled Wii U GamePad controller. You might be expecting this to be a
slim tablet-like device, but in fact it's closer to an oversized handheld games
machine, with comfortable, moulded grips, twin analogue pads, digital trigger and
bumper buttons and a large 6.2in LCD touchscreen.
