OPPORTUNITY CAFE
University of Ibadan campus, lacks a space for
students with an entrepreneurial minds to
test ideas and innovative solutions.
The Challenge
A survey in 2016 revealed that sampled7 out of 10
university graduates who had ideas for potentially
viable business solutions as undergraduates,
forfeited those ideas due to the
jobcentric focus of university education and the absence of
dedicated spaces for entrepreneural activities.
“ ” is a networking space for buddingOpportunity Cafe
student entrepreneurs to share ideas while having
cups of hot or cold beverage.
Scale:
Opportunity Cafes spread out nationally700
What’s Worked?
A Nigerian youth who enters the university with
entrepreneurial impulses is about likely to99%
give up such inclination by the time they
are graduating.
The current undergrauate population in Nigeria is between
4-5 million
The “Opportunity Cafe” already has
over 50,000 students enrolled
Market Potential
The Solution
Our partnership with NESCAFE involved using our
mentorship platform
“THE NIGERIAN CAMPUS ENTERPRISE
CHALLENGE”
to select aspiring student entrepreneurs
to run 3 cafes for a year.
Sales of up to 400 customers daily per café
have been recorded translating to revenues of up
to $700 daily. This has resulted in combined average
sales (across all 3 cafes) and at least 800 cups sold daily.
Summary
Opportunity Cafe’s strategy is two-fold
A yearly entrepreneurship laboratory
where a select number of students can
gain practical experience by managing
a real business.
A meeting place for student founders
entrepreneurs to engage in start up
conversations, hackathons, business
mentoring sessions and networking
aimed at turning ideas into viable
business solutions, while enjoying unique
beverages.
Our partnership experience with the NESCAFE in 3
Nigerian campuses (Universities of Ibadan, Benin
& Calabar) shows a strong demand by students
for coffee and similar beverages.
