Hepatitis is an inf lammation of the liver caused by the hepatitis virus.
T here are 7 dif f erent types of hepatitis that people can be inf ected with.
All of these types have common symptoms that will indicate a person is
suf f ering f rom the disease. But they also have unique symptoms that will
help experts determine the type of hepatitis virus that the patient is
inf ected with so proper treatment and prevention can be administered.
Hepatitis: Def inition and Causes
T he word hepatitis came f rom the Latin word hepar which means liver and
itis which means inf lammation. T heref ore, hepatitis is an inf lammation of
the liver caused by a virus.
As mentioned above, hepatitis is caused by a virus. T he type of hepatitis will depend on how and where the
virus is acquired will. T here are 5 common types of hepatitis plus 2 more that are less common.
Hepatitis A – this type of hepatitis is acquired through contaminated f ood and water. Eating street
f oods and at hole-in-the-wall restaurants that does not thoroughly clean the ingredients and
utensils bef ore serving can result to this type of hepatitis. Hepatitis A Virus can be f ound in such
f oods and drinks. Anal and/or oral sex can also cause hepatitis A. Most patients make a f ull recovery
af ter getting treatment and it does not lead to a more severe chronic illness.
Hepatitis B – this type of hepatitis is sexually transmitted and is passed on through inf ected blood,
semen, and other f luids released by the body. Patients diagnosed with this kind of hepatitis can
suf f er f rom serious liver damage which may eventually lead to cancer. T his type of hepatitis can also
lead to a more severe and chronic illness.
Hepatitis C – this type of hepatitis is acquired through direct contact of blood by an inf ected person.
T his type of hepatitis can also cause liver damage and swelling. However, unlike hepatitis B, hepatitis
C will only make a patient susceptible to liver cancer if he has cirrhosis and only 20% of patients with
type C can acquire cirrhosis.
Hepatitis D – this type will only be acquired if the patient has hepatitis B. It is transmitted through
unprotected sex, direct contact with blood of an inf ected person, and direct contact of the skin with
inf ected needles.
Hepatitis E – this type can be acquired by drinking contaminated water. T he result of this type is
swelling of the liver but has no long-term ef f ects. Anal and/or oral sex are also possible causes of
this type of hepatitis.
Hepatitis X – this type is determined by doctors if they cannot classif y it as A, B, C, D, or E. In other
words, the cause and hepatitis virus is unknown.
Hepatitis G – this type usually does not manif est any symptoms. But when it does, it isn’t severe and
is very mild.

2. Because dif f erent types of hepatitis are caused and acquired through various media, the symptoms
patients can f eel may also vary. Patients can experience either severe or mild symptoms. And when these
symptoms manif est, they usually occur within 15 up to 180 days upon inf ection.
T he initial phase of hepatitis is called acute hepatitis. T his phase will manif est very mild symptoms and is
usually not dangerous. But if lef t untreated, it could develop to severe consequences. Hence, once these
mild symptoms are experienced, consult with your doctor immediately.

Nausea
Slight pain in the abdominal area
Loss of weight
Appetite loss
Joint pains
As the condition of the patient gets worse, hepatitis symptoms that he will experience will also get worse.
He can experience one or more of the f ollowing:
Problems with body circulation processes
Urine is dark in color
Lightheadedness
Lethargy
Spleen becomes enlarged
Headache
Hives
Skin of ten becomes very itchy
Feces is light in color
Feces that is accompanied by pus
Jaundice
While the symptoms mentioned above are generally what a patient can experience f rom all types of
hepatitis, there are certain symptoms that can be unique to a certain type.
Hepatitis A symptoms – this can include problems with blood clotting, conf usion, jaundice,
tenderness f elt on the upper right side of your stomach.
Hepatitis B symptoms – this can include constant discomf ort f elt on the right side of the abdomen
just under the rib cage and
diarrhea/constipation.
Hepatitis C symptoms – this can include muscle shrinking, palms become really red due to the
expansion of small blood vessels, blood vessels that become prominent on the shoulders, f ace, and
chest areas, variceal bleeding, and cirrhosis.
Hepatitis D symptoms – this can include problems with blood circulation, cirrhosis, and spider
angiomas on the skin.
Hepatitis E symptoms – this can include sore throat and enlarged liver.
Hepatitis X symptoms – in this special type of hepatitis, specif ic symptoms may or may not be
present. Since the virus is unknown, most symptoms experienced are very similar to all other types of

Hepatitis G symptoms – as mentioned already, this type of viral hepatitis does not usually manif est
any symptom. When it does, symptoms are very similar to that of the acute hepatitis phase which is
common to all types of hepatitis.
Prevention of Viral Hepatitis
While hepatitis may not initially be f atal, if it is lef t untreated, it can lead to sudden death. T heref ore,
necessary precautions and preventive measures must be taken. Here are some ways you can prevent
yourself f rom acquire hepatitis virus.
Use protective gloves if you are constantly exposed to blood and blood products f rom people to
prevent the spread of the virus. Af ter using, dispose the gloves immediately.
Make sure to use only sterilized and new needles when dealing with injections. Sharing needles will
result in contamination and spread of the virus.
Do not eat contaminated f ood or f ood f rom unhygienic places. It is always best to eat home-cooked
meals instead with ingredients coming f rom reliable sources to protect yourself f rom acquiring the
disease.
Practice saf e sex. Use condoms when having sex with your partner to prevent the spread of the
disease.
Always remember to wash your hands when dealing with f ood. Bef ore and af ter you eat as well as
bef ore and af ter you cook, it is important to thoroughly wash your hands.
Resist the temptation of drowning yourself in too much alcohol. Alcohol can af f ect the liver and it
can make you susceptible to acquiring the hepatitis virus.
Fortunately, hepatitis A has a vaccine. Talk to your physician on how you can get a shot.
Hepatitis is a viral disease is highly contagious. Whatever we do every day, we are all at risk of acquiring the
virus and developing the disease. Hence, it is important that we take the necessary precautions and
preventive measures to make sure that we are saf e and healthy. Furthermore, limiting your alcohol intake
will also help your body to become less at risk with acquiring the virus. If possible, get a vaccine so you can
rest assured that you are saf e and healthy.
