Fishing Rod Guide Placement, two-person team WPI, Worcester,MA
“Fishing rods are constructed of carbon fiber materials to precise dimensions. Mechanically
it is equivalent to a tapered beam with a major and minor stiffness orientation. Guides are
placed along the rod to transfer the line tension to the rod. The placement of the guides
influences the deflected shape and stresses in the rod when landing a fish. The challenge is
to develop criteria for optimum placement of the guides to minimize the stress in the rod for
a given magnitude of tension and orientation of the rod handle relative to the direction of the
line to the fish. The analysis requires the use of large deflection theory and calculations are
to be confirmed experimentally using strain gages attached to the rod.”

Waste Water Energy Recovery,three-person team DOER, Boston, MA
“The Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources is evaluating waste water energy
recovery as a potential source of renewable energy. The purpose of this project is to enable
the DOER to implement WWER technology in Massachusetts. We interviewed
representatives that either had experience with WWER or could benefit from its installation.
We developed criteria for the evaluation of potential installation sites. We also devised a
process for the selection, installation, and operation of a WWER system at a site in
Massachusetts.”
Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC),Newport,RI June 1,2015 – Sept 1,2015
Intern in the Surface Ship Torpedo Defense (SSTD) division
Supported the multi-million-dollar integration effort of the new Light Weight Tow (LWT)
torpedo defense system on the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) by collaborating with the
shipbuilder, missions package control, and NUWC engineers.
Designed test-rig for future at-sea testing of the LWT system towed-body by examining
previous test-rigs, evaluating potential materials, and creating a database of information for
future users.
Assisted the effort towards obsolescence elimination on the NIXIE torpedo defense systems
out in the Fleet, by writing trouble reports, composing and editing testing protocol documents
to meet MIL Specs, and updating technical drawings in their appropriate databases.

Intern
Witnessed and assisted the $1million project to replace Cold-Floor System at Brown
University Ice Arena from the design phase to ice-building.
Completed Submittals, Purchase Orders, and Change Order Requests in addition to
compiling the Standard Operating Procedure / Operation and Maintenance Manuals per
Brown University Standards ensuring owner and operators will get the most out of the
system as designed.
Attended job-site visits to confirm all work was within set standards, kept records of items
not meeting these standards, and proposed solutions that would be least costly to both parties.
Saved an estimated $10,000 by catching a welding issue that did not meet standards.
