It Will Kick Your Butt

There are tours that fill up fast, according to
UWSP Adventure Tours, and hiking Rim to Rim
in the Grand Canyon (GC) promised to be one of
those. My spouse Karl and I had been talking
about a great need to see the GC and standing
on the Rim wasn’t going to cut it. Many of us can
probably attribute our resurgence of love for
national parks due to the Ken Burn’s series on
Public Television and 2016 marks the 100th
anniversary of the formation of the National Park
Service. When UWSP Adventure Tours
announced that registration was opening, we
jumped into our boots and started the count
down.
Tour Leader Prof. Corey Huck provided his
Grand Canyon training program to the group last
summer, but for us, training really got serious six
months out. Nothing spells out “shaking up a
Wisconsin winter hibernation plan” like the
“Huck Make It Out Alive Plan.” At least, that’s
how seriously we took it. We watched videos on
extreme temperatures, dehydration, elevation
gains and body abuse from descending and
climbing. And thus, the diligent training began in
January. Walking, cross­country skiing, yoga,
lunges, stair climbing, balance exercises, biking,
and running – you name it, we did it. At three
months out, our hiking group converged for our
traveler orientation. Orientations are valuable
(having done a few UWSP AT tours before); It’s
nice to meet your fellow hikers, discuss gear,
ask questions, get answers, and provide a
delusional sense of calm that “you’ve got this.”
Corey said a few times during the orientation

that if you want to enjoy your trip, make sure you
are conditioned and ready for it. He shared
stories from the dark side and, even though we
all sat with smiles on our faces, a wave of “holy­
crap” passed over us all.
Flash forward to the end of May and we all stood
on the South Rim and swooned with giddy
excitement that we would be the lucky

Cheap Flights!
1) Delete your history or use
an incognito window when
browsing for flights. Airline
websites and search engines
use your search history and
jack up the price to trick you
out of waiting for future deals.
2) Use airline comparison
engines to compare different
airlines, routes, and prices to
get cheap flights to your
desired destination. Some of
our favorites include
Skyscanner,
AirFareWatchDog, and
FareCompare.

3) Sign up for price alerts
with airline comparison
engines, travel agencies,
and airlines. They will alert
you of the best prices and the
best time to purchase your
flight. You may receive an
email a day, but it is definitely
worth the discounts and
steals. Program Manager
Trevor Roark recently saved
thousands of dollars on Tour
Leaders' New Zealand flights
by using FareCompare's price
alerts!
4) Don’t always search for
direct flights. A flight to a
nearby city might have a
layover at your destination; it
might be cheaper to book that
flight and get off during the
layover. Also, if you find a
flight to a nearby city, check
the cost and schedule of
public transportation (eg. bus,
train) from that airport to your
destination.
5) Don’t always choose to
book round trip. Check to see
if 2 one­way tickets between
your home and destination
are cheaper.
6) After deciding on a flight,
go to the airline's direct site for
additional discounts or hidden
baggage fees.
7) Found a cheaper
flight? Show your travel agent
or airline that you booked with
and request a refund and
reissue of tickets at the new
price. You will be charged a
cancellation fee, but it still
might end up saving you a ton
of money!!!
