Programs We Can Implement Here
Recyclmania- a competition between schools for eights weeks during
the spring in which each university promotes waste reduction
activities. Each school totals the amount they have recycled each
week and it is calculated into percentages and posted every week so
institutions can track how they are doing.
SUNY Adirondak
• Earth Hour- Lighting Floating
Candles and Releasing Them
• Arbor Day- Planting Small Trees Around Campus
• Urban Vertical Garden- built from
soda bottles
SUNY Albany
9
• Shredding Day – shredding paper/card stock, manila
folders, paper clips, stapled paper, and checkbooks.
Everything will be recycled by Pro-Shred Security.
• Energy Campaign- “To promote the conservation of
electricity consumption [throughout campus], we
conduct an energy campaign from early September to
mid November. During this time, the electricity usage
of these buildings is monitored and updated weekly
and in real-time on Facilities' Energy page.”
(October 2012 Results Below)
10
• Empire Commons Electricity Bill- The Office of Environmental
Sustainability distributes simulated electricity bills to the
residents of Empire Commons. The bills are intended to inform
students on the amount of electricity they consume per month.
• Keep blogs, calendars, videos, and news archives that
are accessible to the student body
SUNY Alfred State
• Renewable Energy
Webcam- This camera
is an Axis 233D camera
mounted on a 100 ft
wind turbine tilt up
tower. The tower has a
weather data collection
system allowing users
to manage information
collected on wind
speed, direction, and
run. Solar information on Radiation (UV), potential production
energy, and available time, humidity, wind chill, rainfall and
rates, as well as much more information all specific to the
Wellsville region are collected and recorded for student use. The
information is currently managed through a student learning
center where it is displayed in a public area of the electrical
construction and maintenance electrician's building. The
electricity produced by the wind turbine is then kept in a battery
tank for future use.
• SUNNY Portal- Leading the
way sustainability usage,
Alfred State is using a
photovoltaic grid intertie
system to power the library
and administrative building on
campus. This system is one
much a like a homeowner
11
would use, teaching the students what energy usage
would be like in the “real world.” This system also
cuts down on energy costs because they are using
renewable energy.
• SUNYGREENSNY- A group of colleges and industries committed
to promoting clean energy technology across New York State.
All colleges are part of the SUNY system and most of these
colleges have learned to share their best practices spread across
their own campuses.

that allows students to view energy conservation tips.
It is used as an open lab for the community and the
students
of Alfred
State.
SUNY Alfred University

build a bus shelter using recycled material for the bench seats.
12
SUNY Brockport
• UMUG Program- Students are able to purchase a $30
membership using pocket money or [dragon dollars] and have
four weeks of unlimited refills at their food court dining hall.
Must be used with their ID cards.
