- Hello everybody. First of all I want you to thank you for being here, and thank you especially to Anne and Johannes for being with us. What we want to do this morning is to discuss some theoretical and methodological aspects of ethnography using for the debate some field data of my ethnography. Instead of establishing an abstract debate, we want to ground the discussion on an empirical base. You have to see it as an exercise. The data I will propose is no more than an way for framing the debate. As you know, doing ethnography is really a difficult task, doing ethnography on the Internet is much more difficult because we are force to think and re-formulate almost every methodological and theoretical concept that we want to apply. The funny thing is that at first sight doing ethnography of the Internet seems easier than doing ethnography in other field sites. You just have to sit in front of the screen and do your fieldwork. But, as time goes on and more ethnographies on the Internet are done, researchers find that very often it is not enough to sit in front of the computer if we want to fully understand the people, practices and phenomena that takes place through the Internet. So, we have to look for co-presence, for doing multisited ethnography, for taking into account the mediation, the heterogeneous composition of the collectives we are researching, and so on, so on.
