- This work will be included in two ZeEUS publications: the Vision and the Roadmap. There are many challenges on the way to introduce high capacity electric buses and the public transport stakeholders have rated them in order of importance as follows: COST E-bus = 2 x the price of a conventional bus (battery=45% cost) Charging infrastructure cost and installation Fast charging infrastructure Or…More buses (spare) Local Depreciation rules Very local TCO models Different maintenance cost PERFORMANCE Analysis of the operational needs for each line is a first good step to understand which electric technology is the most convenient. A good analysis of the operational needs is key: imagine which type of bus can work on which line, always using the system approach. A chosen technology only performs well when put in its best operational conditions CONTRACTS & ORGANISATIONAL FRAMEWORK OF THE BUS SECTOR Functions sharing between stakeholders (Authorities, Operators, Industry) Who pays? At what cost? Who owns rolling stock/infra? Tender a system vs vehicle Service/operation provider contract length & extensions Equipment ownership: what happens at the end of a contract? Social & environmental benefits to be included in this frame (are often excluded from the contractual frameworks, i.e.: the environmental impact assessment of switching to ebus is often excluded or ignored from the PT contracts INTEROPERABILITY & OPERATIONAL FLEXIBILITY Charging infrastructure standardization is key Slow charging / overnight CCS easy to be adapted Fast charging / opportunity Many charging solutions Different implementations of the same charging solution ENERGY PROVISION - availability of power supply with a suitable location to set up a charging point in the urban environment - cost of obtaining the correct power supply - bringing the energy to the charging point (energy network distribution quality: age of the cables, etc.) - Possibility to use the power generated by other modes? ie: ELIPTIC project
