3. The character Mr. Bean Charles Jacob was created and developed while Atkinson was
studying her Masters at the University of Oxford . A sketch embodying the character was
performed at the Edinburgh Fringe in the early '80s . A similar character called Robert
Box , embodied by Atkinson , appeared in the ITV sitcom Canned Laughter , 1979
, where he also used several scenes of the 1979 film Bean. In 1987 , one of the first
appearances of Mr. Bean was the comedy festival " Just For Laughs " in Montreal
, Quebec , Canada . When the directors of the festival program schedule Atkinson 's
debut on the festival program , Atkinson insisted that he would act in the francophone
program instead of the Anglophone . Having no French dialogue in his act , the
directors of the festival's program could not understand why Atkinson wanted to
perform in the francophone program. As it turned out , actuation Atkinson at the festival
was a test platform for the Mr. Bean character and Atkinson wanted to see how the
physical comedy mute character would be away on an international stage with a nonEnglish-speaking audience.
The name of the character was not decided until the end of the production and
recording of the first program , with a large number of other names being explored
, based on fruits and vegetables , such as " Mr. Cauliflower " ( Mr. Cauliflower ) . Atkinson
cited the precursor Monsieur Hulot character comedy , created by French comedian
and director Jacques Tati , as an influence for the character . Statistically , Mr. Bean is
also very similar to precursors of comedy films , relying purely physical comedy, with Mr.
Bean speaking very little dialogue and short (although as in other series of the TV
comedy of the season , if have a laugh track ) . This has allowed the series have been
sold worldwide with almost no significant changes in the original dialogue.
