6. Search: A Serious Enterprise Search Contender
Historically
• FAST was an add-on to SharePoint 2010
• Incremental crawls led to stale search results
• Best Bets used to refine search results
• Poor search results with little relevance and
intelligence
• Cumbersome user experience
SharePoint 2013 Search
• FAST is now seamlessly integrated into SharePoint
2013 at no additional cost to the end user
• Continuous crawl increases freshness
• Query Rules are used create Promoted Results
• Addition of Analytics allow for intent-driven search
capabilities
• User experience (UX) has been dramatically
enhanced

8. Search: Personalized Behaviors
When searching for documents, new intelligence recalls previous behavior to quickly
surface relevant documents that you’re likely to be searching.
A list of Results you’ve clicked and Suggested documents to follow
helps you narrow files based on your intent
9. Collaboration: Capabilities With Just One Click
Users can now collaborate even better by leveraging the new Facebook-like
paradigm of “following” content. Sharing content no longer requires multiple
steps.
Share and Follow buttons are universally
placed on every file, site and contact
Within your profile, you can easily
manage and monitor the people,
documents, sites and tags you are
following
10. Collaboration: Edit Documents Simultaneously
There is no longer a need to email large documents back and forth for collaborative
editing. SharePoint emphasizes its collaborative features by enabling co-author
capabilities and managing tracked changes for you.
Quick view into
others editing the
document at the
same time
Can view
changes by

11. Intranet/Extranet: OOB Opportunities
SharePoint 2013’s flat intranet and extranet design encourages developers with basic
skills to create a unique and branded experience for the firm.
Out-of-the-box features allow organizations to create a dynamic, interactive and
informational environment, such as:
Message from
the President
News Feed
Blog

Library
12. Intranet/Extranet: Branding Opportunities

14. Apps: SharePoint Application Evolution
2003 – What is an Application?
-SharePoint was not an Application Platform, except web parts
-Investments were in portals and content
2007 – Everything is an Application!
-Push to embrace SharePoint for LOB applications
-Experience was to write custom server side code
2010 – Choose the right Application
-SharePoint and Developer Tools come together
-Silverlight, CSOM and other new capabilities
-Partially trusted code reduces impact and risk to farm
2013 – Redefine Application as App…
-Client side experience via html or iFrame
-Leverage CSOM and REST APIs from Azure and other clients
-Investments in app discovery and management via SharePoint store
15. Apps: SharePoint Application Evolution
Full Trust Solutions
No real control
Support is a nightmare
Upgrade is quite a challenge

17. Apps: What is a SharePoint App?
Is the future proof way to add new capabilities to SP2013+
Is available from Corporate Catalog and/or SP Store
Is easy to install by site owners or Tenant/Farm Admin
Is a web application that runs “OUTSIDE” of SharePoint
Uses CLIENT APIs to talk to SharePoint (JS, REST, and .NET)
18. Apps: Build Alongside SharePoint
SharePoint now emphasizes The App Model (vs. Solutions) which allows developers
to build alongside SharePoint.
Custom code never runs on the SharePoint server.
• Custom application code runs either on a web browser or on a separate
server
Why Do You Care?
• Reduces risk - Vulnerabilities and
dependencies are mitigated
• Better performance - Environment
remains supported
• Minimizes hesitation to make updates
• Latest capabilities will be enabled
• Does not lock your firm into your current
version of Sharepoint
• SharePoint cloud environments may now
seem more attractive
19. Apps: Developer Skillsets
Earlier versions of SharePoint emphasized Full Trust Solutions, requiring heavy
SharePoint skills.
The App Model is a demonstration of Microsoft’s commitment to the shift in industry
standards.
22. Mobile – Device Channels
Customize the look and feel based on the device (user agent string)…
23. Business Intelligence
Excel BI:
In-Memory BI Engine (IMBI): The In Memory multidimensional data analysis
engine (IMBI), also known as the Vertipaq engine, allows for almost instant
analysis of millions of rows and is a fully integrated feature in the Excel client.
Power View Add-in for Excel: Power View enables users to visualize and
interact with modeled data by using highly interactive visualizations, animations
and smart querying.
Decoupled PivotChart and PivotTable reports: Users can now create PivotChart
reports without having to include a PivotTable report on the same page.
24. Business Intelligence
Excel Services:
•Data exploration improvements
•Field list and field well support
•Calculated measures and members:
•Enhanced timeline controls:
•Application BI Servers ( on Premises only)
•Business Intelligence Center update

Notes de l'éditeur
SharePoint releases to date have not demonstrated dramatic changes in overall functionality and user experience. SharePoint 2013 is different. With a new architecture in place (App Model) and a hefty investment towards overhauling search capabilities, SP13 has proven to be a reflection of customer needs and shifting industry trends.
Workflows, Search, Collaboration and Intranet/Extranet capabilities have all been dramatically improved for legal in the newest release; search is the largest improvement of all. Business Intelligence, Social, E-Discovery and mobile are all features of SharePoint 2013, but add little relevance to the legal industry at this time.
FAST add on historically ~$100K
Important Points for continuous Crawl:
The major difference with incremental crawl is that the crawl can run in parallel
"Continuous Crawl" is only available for sources of content type "SharePoint Sites"
By default, a new crawl is run every 15 minutes, but the SharePoint administrator can change this interval using the
PowerShell cmdlet Set-SPEnterpriseSearchCrawlContentSource
Once started, a "Continuous Crawl" can’t be paused or stopped, you can just disable it.
Query rules can be created at Search Service Application, Site Collection, or Site level. The rules are inherited by default but you can remove, add, configure and change the order of query rules at each level. Fortunately, it also allows you to test a query and see which rules will fire.
Hover Panels can be customized
Integration with OneDrive – New features coming
Works with both OneDrive Doc / Microsoft Docs
Current pain points of attorneys:
Latency of reviewing and approving documents between attorneys when they are emailed / poor workflow
Inconsistency of document file types when emailing edits back and forth
The Excel 2013 client application does not support co-authoring workbooks in SharePoint 2013 or SharePoint Online. Co-authoring workbooks in SharePoint is supported by using the Excel Web App, which is included with Office Web Apps.
Other enhancements may include: announcements list, survey, discussion board, community group, etc. These out-of-the-box features promote usage and adoption for teams.

IT departments can now hire less specialized skillsets.
75% of application developers know HTML/CSS/JS – Point: These skills are becoming more universal
Pros: Cloud first – new features will be implemented in the cloud first
Cons: When you start having performance issues, addressing them with 3rd party can be limited
Site Feature should be activated to get the OOB mobile view
Device Channels provide a way to make your SharePoint sites viewable on mobile devices, such as smart phones and tablets. Device Channels are available on publishing sites or team sites with the publishing feature activated. They provide you the ability to set different master pages and CSS for different devices like Tablet, Windows Phone, iPhone etc. As a result, you can have a user friendly experience for your website when viewed on mobile device.
