How to use public library resources you already have to assist entrepreneurs and job hunters and to enhance your workforce development outcomes. Career transition programs allow libraries to use existing resources to help their communities return to work. Re-employed patrons make a stronger contribution to the community’s shared prosperity.

Who We Are St. Louis County Library is: -A large public library system in St. Louis County, Missouri -The 12th largest public library system in the United States by circulation -The largest public library system in Missouri -Composed of 20 branches, serving a population of over 800,000 people -Bordered by St. Louis Public Library (East) and St. Charles City-County Library (West), plus the Municipal Library Consortium, a partnership of nine independent public libraries
- 3. The Origin Story All great cultures and civilizations have an origin story or a creation myth. Here’s ours…. -The Great Recession! -Unemployed patrons came into St. Louis County Library Reference looking for help -We didn’t have the resources to help them -What we had was obsolete job hunting books
- 4. Databases to the Rescue! -What don’t have what we need, so what do we have? -Why not use these small business databases? -We’ve got databases that can create lists of companies… -We’ve got databases that offer deep level company reports… -We’ve got databases that offer in-depth industry reports…
- 6. Missouri is the “Show Me State” -So we had these great databases, but can they do the job? -We reached out to Metro St. Louis career coaches and career transition organizations -They gave us guidance on what would work for their clients -As SLCL acquired new resources, our partners continued working with us
- 7. Our Partners in Crime And many, MANY, wonderful career coaches!
- 8. Rise of the eCourses!
- 9. SLCL’s Current Programs -Book A Librarian (BAL), a one-on-one session that normally involves SLCL’s databases & electronic resources. Currently offered via Zoom during the pandemic -In-Person Programs, offered in SLCL branches and our partners’ locations -Virtual Programs, offered via Zoom. Some based on in-person programs, others uniquely virtual
- 10. SLCL Is Not Alone Cathy Swanson, a Librarian at St. Charles City-County Library and Frank Alaniz, a Lead Field Trainer with the Missouri Department of Economic Development created “Job Searching Today,” a four-part career transition program
- 11. How Libraries Can Help -Career transition programs allow libraries to use existing resources to solve serious problems in their communities -Library resources can help customers: 1. Build lists of potential employers 2. Find in-depth information on companies 3. Find names of potential hiring managers 4. Learn more about industries 5. Prepare for interviews -Libraries-----Workforce Development-------Shared Prosperity
- 12. Lessons Learned -Libraries are resource rich! (if not always monetarily rich) -Business databases are dual-use resources -Reach out to your community resources -Relationship building is key to creating career transition programming -Who are you not reaching?
