3. What is Virtual Reality (VR)?
■ A technology that simulates real or imaginary
environment and allows user to interact with that
environment
■ To ‘enter’ in virtual reality mode, user has to wear a
special headset with all necessary sensors and high-
quality display, earphones, and a special controller for
interaction with the virtual world
4. Google Cardboard
■ Google’s platform for low-cost VR introduced in 2014
■ $4 headset is created from cardboard or plastic
■ User’s Android phone is used as a screen for the headset
■ The Android phone should have gyroscope for tracking
orientation
■ Cardboard provides seamless VR experience with some
special apps from Play Store or 360 videos from YouTube
5. Other VR Platforms
■ Oculus Rift by Facebook
■ Gear VR by Samsung
■ Vive by HTC
■ These platforms provide more immersive VR
experiences with high-quality headsets, controllers and
sensors
6. Daydream VR
■ Google introduced Daydream VR in 2016
■ High-quality product
■ Directly competes with Oculus, Gear VR and HTC Vive
■ Takes mobile VR to the next level
■ Google will certify mobile devices as ‘Daydream Ready’
to ensure high-quality, more immersive, and seamless
VR experience
■ Supports more comfortable headsets and a dedicated
controller for interaction
8. Software Requirements
■ Available as ‘Virtual Reality Mode’ in Android’s newest
version- 7.0 Nougat
■ To enable VR mode, the phone needs to have
‘Daydream-ready’ certification
■ Thus, not all phones with Android 7.0 will support
Daydream VR
9. Hardware Requirements
■ Hardware plays an important role to make a phone
‘Daydream-ready’
■ High-quality gyroscope and other low-latency sensors
■ Low-persistence display with highest possible resolution
■ High-performance SoC (chipset) with powerful CPU and
GPU, that will not overheat too quickly
10. For Developers
■ Currently, Daydream is available in Android N Preview
version only on Nexus 6P
■ Nexus 6P can be used as Daydream-ready Do-It-Yourself kit
■ A VR viewer, such as Cardboard is used as a headset and
any other phone with gyroscope can be used as a
controller
■ Google VR SDK is used for Daydream app development.
The same is available with Android N Preview SDK
