the sustainable management of natural resources in South America”

Product 1. Capabilities in the generation of soils information
developed and strengthened in each country:
 Advanced capabilities were developed in digital soil mapping in regional and sub
regional workshops.
 One article published in SOIL® journal, on the methodology of digital soil mapping.
 Four articles in preparation for regional and international journals.
 Designation of a national responsible of Pillar 4 and creation of national networks for
the management of soil information in each country.
 10 National SOC maps presented to institutions of the agricultural and environmental
sector.
 Regional SOC map presented at the world soil congress in Rio de Janeiro - 2018.

12. • Temperature, soil type, vegetation indexes, and topography were the best predictors for SOC, but
country-specific predictors and their respective weights varied across Latin America.
• Expert opinion is needed to set boundary prediction limits to avoid unrealistically high modeling
estimates.
• Large degree of spatial uncertainty in SOC estimates across Latin America.
• Framework developed for improving country-specific mapping efforts and reducing current
discrepancy of global, regional, and country-specific SOC estimates.

• Result of the collection of chilean data sources
with carbon data from organic soil (A) and its
spatial distribution (B).
• 2,762 points were collected georeferenced with
soil organic carbon data
• Almost all the terrestrial ecosystems of Chile are
represented.
• A group of 47 professionals from 31 public and
private institutions joint together to build
• the largest SOC dataset of Chile.
• Almost 3000 soil observations (currently,
available information: 57 to 400).

Colombia Using the best available
information about bulk density, the
lowest errror level is generated. These
results have make a difference of 5.5% on
carbon stocks.
