Journalism
Journalism is the activity of gathering, assessing,
creating, and presenting news and information.
It is also the product of these activities.
Journalism and Democratic
Journalism can be distinguished from other activities
and products by certain identifiable characteristics and
practices.
These elements not only separate journalism from
other forms of communication, they are what make it
indispensable to democratic societies.
History reveals that the more democratic a society, the
more news and information it tends to have.
The purpose of journalism
The purpose of journalism is thus to provide citizens
with the information they need to make the best
possible decisions about their lives, their
communities, their societies, and their
governments.
News
News is that part of communication that keeps
us informed of the changing events, issues, and
characters in the world outside. Though it may
be interesting or even entertaining, the
foremost value of news is as a utility to
empower the informed.
The elements of journalism
• Journalism’s first obligation is to the truth
• Its first loyalty is to citizens
• Its essence is a discipline of verification
• Its practitioners must maintain an independence
from those they cover
• It must strive to keep the significant interesting
and relevant

Journalism’s first obligation is to the
truth
Good decision-making depends on people
having reliable, accurate facts put in a
meaningful context. Journalism does not pursue
truth in an absolute or philosophical sense, but
in a capacity that is more down to earth.
Journalism’s first obligation is to the
truth
• This “journalistic truth” is a process that begins with the
professional discipline of assembling and verifying facts.
Then journalists try to convey a fair and reliable account
of their meaning, subject to further investigation.
• Journalists should be as transparent as possible about
sources and methods so audiences can make their own
assessment of the information. Even in a world of
expanding voices, “getting it right” is the foundation
upon which everything else is built – context,
interpretation, comment, criticism, analysis and debate.
The larger truth, over time, emerges from this forum.
Its first loyalty is to citizens
The publisher of journalism – whether a media
corporation answering to advertisers and
shareholders or a blogger with his own personal
beliefs and priorities — must show an ultimate
allegiance to citizens. They must strive to put
the public interest – and the truth – above their
own self-interest or assumptions.
Its essence is a discipline of verification
Journalists rely on a professional discipline for
verifying information. While there is no
standardized code as such, every journalist uses
certain methods to assess and test information
to “get it right.”
Its practitioners must maintain an
independence from those they cover
Independence is a cornerstone of reliability.
On one level, it means not becoming seduced by
sources, intimidated by power, or compromised by
self-interest. On a deeper level it speaks to an
independence of spirit and an open-mindedness
and intellectual curiosity that helps the journalist
see beyond his or her own class or economic status,
race, ethnicity, religion, gender or ego.
It must strive to keep the significant
interesting and relevant
Journalism is storytelling with a purpose. It
should do more than gather an audience or
catalogue the important. It must balance what
readers know they want with what they cannot
anticipate but need.
Cyber Journalism
Cyber journalism is a term coined after the
merging of various traditional media brought
about by the proliferation of media industries
due to current influx of new technology and
globalization.
On-line newspapers
An online newspaper is the online version of a
newspaper, either as a stand-alone publication
or as the online version of a printed periodical.
Going online created more opportunities for
newspapers, such as competing with broadcast
journalism in presenting breaking news in a
more timely manner.
Immediacy
One of the most significant advantages of online
journalism is its immediacy.
Prior to the development of online journalism radio was
the most immediate medium, with news bulletins every
thirty minutes or every hour. However the online
environment allows for much greater immediacy.
Journalists in this medium have the unique ability to
publish news events as they happen.
Multimedia Elements
Other advantages of online journalism relate to other
medium-specific characteristics. The incorporation of
multimedia elements makes news websites more
informative and entertaining. Hyperlinks, blogs and
discussion forums allow web-users a more hands on
experience, allowing them to be participants in the
news process (Millison, 2004).
5 keys advantages of Cyber Journalism
• Web journalism is search-based. A reader can
locate the story of his choice by typing the
search word or a search phrase.
• A news story once published on the site can
be accessed 24/7 from the newspaper’s online
archives in contrast to a printed newspaper
where one has to visit a library to locate a
story that has been printed a month or a year
ago.
5 keys advantages of Cyber Journalism
• A media site can go beyond news. It can
provide information and value added services
that a physical newspaper cannot.
• A media website can be accessed from
anywhere in the world. All that you need is an
internet connection. A newspaper is available
only in a limited distribution area. This limits
the range of news and information that a
newspaper can publish.
5 keys advantages of Cyber Journalism
• A news website can publish news stories as video
reports or multimedia stories, making web journalism a
highly versatile news medium . A newspaper is limited
to text. This limits the appeal of a newspaper
considerably.
E-publishing
Electronic publishing (also referred to as e-
publishing or digital publishing or online
publishing) includes the digital publication of e-
books, digital magazines, and the development
of digital libraries and catalogues.

Can we adapt 4P’s marketing in
this environment?
