Circular No. 20 Highlights Fairmont's Academic, Sporting and Cultural Achievements
1. CIRCULAR NO. 20
18 June 2015
Dear Parent(s) / Guardian(s)
“IT’S NOT WHAT YOU’VE GOT,
IT’S WHAT YOU USE THAT MAKES A DIFFERENCE.”

upcoming soccer tournament to East London with Jeanre Finlay Gr. 11
2. 1) ACADEMICS
We continue to add our full support and encouragement to all pupils in our school as they proceed
through the exam writing process. Four more exam days remain before the exams are completed
and we can then look forward to our mid-year break.
HAPPY FATHERS’ DAY
We wish all our fathers a very happy Fathers’ Day this coming Sunday.
We hope that your children spoil you with a ‘little payback’ for what you do for them.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION RE MATRIC CERTIFICATES
We have received a directive from the Western Cape Education Department that every
unclaimed matric certificate that we hold at Fairmont has to be returned to the Education
Department by the end of this term. Should you know of a past pupil or be one yourself
who has never collected the certificate, to do so urgently. They will be held at the
Department in Cape Town for a period of three years only and thereafter will be
destroyed.
The 2014 matric certificates will remain at Fairmont until the end of the year. The
unclaimed certificates will be returned to the Department where they will also remain for
a period of three years and thereafter will be destroyed.
COUNSELLOR'S CORNER
SELFIES
According to the Oxford Dictionary online, the definition of selfie “is a photo taken of oneself at arm’s
length”. Teenagers, who are eager users of social media and the internet, are capitalizing on the
idea of selfies. Just look at one of your child’s social profiles and you are bound to find a ‘selfie’.
Even adults and older users of social media have run victim of the odd selfie.
Is there anything parents should be aware of?
According to psychologist Dr. Silverman, parents should keep in mind that adolescents (teenagers)
are at an age where image and appearance is very important to them emotionally. By posting selfies
it could be a search for affirmation, attention or positive reinforcement. Selfies can play on the
vulnerability of the adolescent since others can ‘like’ or comment on the photo. Some adolescents
will constantly check to see whether they have received ‘likes’ or comments. It can be upsetting if
negative comments are received.
Once again the old rule applies: parents need to make sure that children feel secure and validated.
Secondly, it is good to know on which sites your children are and what they are posting.

6) STAFF PRO GRO WEEKEND
On the weekend of the 5 - 7 June 2015, 15
Fairmont teachers attended a “Progro”
conference presented by NAPTOSA at
Houw Hoek Hotel in Grabouw.
While log fires burned in the conference
room to keep the winter chills away, our
brains were kept fired up with new ideas and
information.
The topic for the conference was “Positive
Discipline” and we definitely gained many
positive insights.
We came away from the weekend with very
full tummy’s (Houw Hoek’s catering is
exceptional) and even fuller minds.
This was also a great team building
experience for our group as we shared
insights and stories while enjoying the great
hospitality that Houw Hoek offers.
5. 7) FAIRMONT DRUMMIES
The time has finally come for the WP Drill Champions to take place this Saturday, 20 June at the
Hottentots Holland High School in Somerset West. The high school large drill section will start
marching at 14:15.
Our team of girls have practiced long and hard hours in all kinds of weather conditions. The trainer,
Karen Donachie, and assistant trainers, Mrs La Cock and Kelly Swanepoel have worked hard in
preparing the team for this championships.
We would like to take this opportunity in wishing the leader, Timone Garcias and her team of 2015
everything of the best for this championship.
