at risk of falling, need effective and comfortable hip protection as a
prevention of a hip fracture.
 Clinical trials around the world show that prevention and hip
protection can significantly reduce the incidence of hip fractures
 Hip fractures are the main reason why people are referred to a
nursing home

3.  What starts out as an innocent fall may lead to an operation, a long
stay in hospital and an increased demand for professional care
 In addition, 30% of all people who suffer a hip fracture die within 2
years
 In other words, hip fractures are expensive for patients in terms of
quality of life, and for society in terms of financial costs

5. OSTEOPOROSIS
 Osteoporosis is defined, by consensus, as a systemic skeletal
disease, characterized by low bone mass and micro architectural
deterioration of bone tissue with a consequent increase in bone
fragility and susceptibility to fracture
 Increase of hip fractures with age.
 Osteoporosis is primarily described in postmenopausal women
but men arc not free from it, and a quarter of the hip fractures
occurs in men.
 Osteoporosis and its direct consequences, fractures, are major
concerns for public health since they arc associated with
increased death rates and with substantial disability

6. OSTEOPOROSIS
 Moreover, they represent an important cost for the public health
budget.
 European Commission estimated in a recent report the cost of
osteoporosis in the countries of the European Union at € 3.5 billion
annually for hospital health care alone
 An American study estimated the total health care expenditure
attributable to osteoporotic fractures in the United States at USS
13.8 billion (€ 12.4 billion) in 1995

7. BURDEN OF INJURY FROM FALLS
 A growing number of elderly people indicate a future rise
in the occurrence of hip fractures
 Worldwide, it is estimated that the number of hip
fractures will increase from 1.66 million into 2.6 million in
2025 and 6.26 million in 2050.

many of the accidents that lead to a
diminished quality of life for many people and
to increased treatment and care costs

9.  Hip fracture is the single disease that occupies the highest number
of bed days in Denmark and around 7,500 hip fractures among
people over 65 years occur annually
 14% of all the hospitalizations come from nursing homes. More than
90% of all hip fractures are caused by falls
 Fall-related injuries as hip fractures are associated with increased
mortality and a major cause of loss of functional capacity and
impaired quality of life

10.  We need that data and research in BiH…
 In our County hospital Zenica, on department of Orthopedic and
Traumatology, we were operated amount of large number of
patients in third age of their life
 We will show the précised data about type of operation and
morbidities among our patients with hip fractures four periods 1985-
2010

11. RESULTS...
 From 1985. do 2010. yrs we operated 847 patients with hip fractures
 I group age 20-60 we had 51 patients-mostly traumatized
 II group age 60-80 we had a 704 patients
 III group age < 80 we had a 92 patients
 From 847 patients 642 was women and 205 are man
 847 patients multiply by cost of endoprosthesis, operation and other
costs off taking care four patients (nursing etc...), recovery and stuff
(5000KM cca) = 4.235 000 KM (2.100 000 €)
