2. INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING
Indonesia is one of the largest industrial country in Southeast Asia. For example, there are many
food industry, like snack company, rise company, then, there are many convection industry. Therefore,
learning industrial engineering is important and very useful to support Indonesia’s industry. According to
the Institute of Industrial Engineering (IIE) Industrial Engineering is concerned with the design,
improvement, and installation of integrated systems of people, materials, information, equipment, and
energy. It draws upon specialized knowledge and skills in the mathematical, physical, and social sciences
together with the principles and methods of engineering analysis and design to specify, predict, and evaluate
the results to be obtained from such a system, so by learning industrial engineering, we can learn how to
design a system in industry, where the relationship between human, material, and resource can work well
because, nowadays, many industries, especially factories, don’t protect the environment. Many factories
don’t process waste properly so it can damage the environment which will have negative impact. For
example, in the fabric factory, fabric dye waste discharge into the river and river water will be polluted.
People who live around the river can’t use river water. They can’t drink the water, can’t wash clothes, and
rice fields that are flowed by river water are dead.
Indonesia has extraordinary nature with rich resources, so it is a pity if it is damaged by industries
that are not responsible for their waste. A good industry is an industry that applies the concept of a green
industry. According to the Indonesian Ministry of Industry, Green Industry is an industry that in its
production process prioritizes efforts to efficiently and effectively use resources in a sustainable manner so
as to be able to harmonize industrial development with the preservation of environmental functions and can
provide benefits to the community. Industrial waste must be treated in order to be useful and not damage the
environment. Industry must apply the 4R principle, they are :
1. Reduce is the reduction of resources, such as raw materials, energy, and water by using the best
possible way.
2. Reuse is the reuse of existing resources, which can still be used after being used.
3. 3. Recycle is the reuse of resources resulting from processes or waste that can still be utilized by
modifying through technology.
4. Recovery is the recovery of resources that have been used before so that they can be used again.
Existing industries must also be re-examined so that the quality of factories, products, and people are
maintained, therefore industrial engineering also studies quality control. According to Dr. K. Ishikawa
understands Quality Control is an activity of researching, developing, designing and meeting customer
satisfaction, providing good service where the implementation involves all activities in the company from
the top leadership to the implementing employees. Quality control is important in the industry to regulate
from the top level of the company to the bottom so that the quality of the company remains stable. In quality
control, we can researching how an industry moves and what deficiency need to be fixed, so that we can
develop and design a system for customer satisfaction.
By studying industrial engineering, I hope to be able to contribute to the development of industry in
Indonesia so that industries in Indonesia can implement green industries so that Indonesia's natural
environment is maintained and can implement good quality control.
