New Delhi: Prime Min-

Saturday hailed the
government's reforms
to mark the eight years
of his government in
power. The prime min-
ister tweeted three
news pieces highlight-
ing the government's
achievements in mak-
ing India 'Atmanirbhar'
or self-reliant.
The article spoke
about the 'Atmanirbhar
Bharat' slogan which
the prime minister
coined during the peak
of Covid-19 pandemic.
It spoke about India's
initiative of exporting
medicines to 100 coun-
tries and dispatching
more than 20 crore jabs
to the needy countries.
Crediting the self-re-
liant India vision, it
spoke on how India's
exports hit record highs
while foreign invest-
ment in India reached
record level.
"Clearly, the world
wants to trade with In-
dia and considers it a
reliable partner in the
post-COVID world or-
der," the article read.
The Narendra Modi
government has been
hailed for its efforts to
protect the overseas In-
dians and Indian inter-
ests across the world.
Aditionally, there
have been several re-
forms to ensure a strong
domestic defence man-
ufacturing ecosystem.
The government has
also focused on ensur-
ing that India becomes
a major exporter of
arms. "From setting up
defence corridors to
corporatising the ord-
nance factories to in-
crease in FDI in the de-
fence sector, many steps
have helped in the pace
of development," PM
Modi wrote.

New Delhi: Hitting

Manish Sisodia alleged
that while India battled
the Covid pandemic in
2020, the then Assam
health minister Him-
anta Biswa Sarma gave
contracts to companies
of his wife and son’s
business partners to
supply PPE kits above
market rates, AAP lead-

leged on Saturday citing
media reports.
At a press conference,
he claimed that while

urgent supply orders to
the firms of his wife and
son’s business partners
for Rs 990 a piece “tak-
ing advantage of the
Covid-19 emergency”.
The firm belonging to
Sarma’s wife does not
even deal in medical
equipment, he alleged.
“While the contract
given to the firm of Sar-
ma’s wife was cancelled
as the company could
not supply PPE kits, an-
other supply order was
given to the firm be-

rate of Rs 1,680 per kit,”
Sisodia said citing the

SISODIA QUESTIONS
 The AAP leader asked why the members of the BJP
were silent on corruption by a chief minister of a state
ruled by the saffron party.
 “They talk of corruption and level baseless
allegations against members of opposition parties.
I want to probe their understanding of corruption…
want to ask them if they consider this (Assam case)
corruption or not,” Sisodia added.

Bhalswa fire releases toxic
gases; landfill removal sought
Locals residing near Bhalswa landfill site said they are facing breathing issues
New Delhi (Agencies):
Locals residing near
Delhi’s Bhalswa landfill
site said they are facing
breathing issues and
have demanded a per-
manent solution to the
frequent fires, which
often rage for days at a
stretch.
Yesterday, the
Bhalswa landfill site
caught fire in the after-
noon and since today,
plumes of smoke have
continued to emanate
from the site.
Earlier in April,
dense plumes of smoke
kept billowing out from
the site after a fire
broke out on April 26
and firefighters battled
to douse the flames for
six consecutive days.
“I have been living
here for the last 20 years
and have been seeing
this from that time. No
changes happened in
this landfill. We are fac-
ing many problems like
breathing and cough-
ing. etc. We want a per-
manent solution for
this,” a local resident
said.

gone down by around

sees quitting the busi-
ness due to “financial

A total of 849 liquor

The excise policy
2021-22 that ended on
May 31 was extended by
two months by the Del-
hi government’s excise
department offering the
retail licensees chance
to renew their licenses
paying fees on the pro
rata basis for the extra
period. However, many
license holders did not
opt for the extension
and shut shops as they
were already finding it
difficult to reach break

ers claimed
“There were different
reasons that dampened
the spirit of retailers,
like the issue of open-
ing liquor stores in
non-conforming wards,
the cut-throat competi-
tion waged by heavy
discounts, and the en-
try of new brands in the
market,” said a liquor
trader.

As a toddler, Shrikant

long time.
The long-term venti-

windpipe. He then un-

inserted a tube into the
windpipe by creating
an opening in the neck.
Due to a long period

boy had neither spoken

doctors at Sir Ganga

Apart from this, Con-

Raghuraj Pratap’s
Jansatta Dal also has
two MLAs. SP will win
three Rajya Sabha seats
on its own and its allies,
but it is getting only one

the compulsion of alli-

compulsion of internal
politics of the party.

ning with the support

and Sonia Gandhi her-
self called and talked to
Chief Minister Hemant

mant did not give one
seat to Congress, while
Akhilesh left two seats.
Three Samajwadi
Party MPs are retiring
as the tenure of Revati
Raman Singh, Vish-
wambhar Nishad and
Sukhram Singh Yadav
has come to an end. But
instead of these three,
SP
, of its own doing, has
got only one seat. Akh-
ilesh Yadav himself sat
down and nominated
Kapil Sibal and Jayant
Chaudhary
, but both are
not becoming MPs of
his party
. Sibal is an in-
dependent and Jayant
Choudhary will become
the RLD MP. Technical-
ly only one MP from SP
will be elected i.e. Javed
Ali. Therefore, SP is fac-
ing a direct loss of two
RS seats, even though
the number game is in
its favour.
If Akhilesh wanted,
he could have put pres-
sure on Sibal to go to
Rajya Sabha on SP tick-
et instead of as an inde-
pendent. But he didn’t.
One was the pressure of
Azam Khan and second-
ly he himself was feel-
ing the need of a big
lawyer in Delhi. The
compulsion to give tick-
et to Jayant Chaudhary
was because now he has
aligned with all the par-
ties in the state except
the BJP
.
He fought elections
with almost all parties
like Congress, SP, RLD,
Suheldev Bharatiya Sa-
maj Party
.
In politics, if one
keeps leaving every-
one’s side, then it will be
difficult to find a col-
league in the future. So
it was necessary for SP
to hold RLD’s side.
Why did Akhilesh settle for just one RS seat?

two others, all minors,
involved in the gang-
rape of a 17-year-old girl
in luxury car on May 28.

lice teams are on the
lookout for two others.
Earlier in the day,
cops arrested second ac-
cused, who also happens
to be a minor. The case
has caused a political
storm in the state with
involment of politicans’
children.

He was arrested on

Another key accused

“We’ve identified five

had offered to drop
her home. However,
they parked the car in
the Jubilee Hills area
and reportedly took
turns to rape her while
others stood guard

Indians regained confidence of self

Dehradun: Indians,
both within the country

abroad, regained confi-

under the Modi regime
in 8 years.He said , prior
to 2014, there was an at-

Bindu, the woman from
Gujarat’s Vadodara,
who is set to marry her-
self on June 11, received
a strong reaction to her
decision from the

Shukla said that if
Bindu was planning on
getting married in a
temple, that wouldn’t be
allowed as “such mar-

Shukla also called
Bindu “mentally ill.”
Citing the Hindu cul-

“nowhere in Hindu cul-

She said that she was

lakh registered voters.
In terms of population,
out of these, the upper
castes constitute 17 per
cent, Dalits 25 percent
and OBCs are close to 40
percent. Among the
OBCs, around 21% are
estimated to be non-Ya-

THAT PROMOTES
RAPE CULTURE
perfume ad has
raised a stink for us-
ing double entendre
dialogue and the gov-
ernment has ordered
the ad to be taken down as it pro-
motes rape culture. The risqué
ad has been given thumbs down
on social media. One Twitter
user said that the communica-
tions agency has “messed up big
time.” The questions being
asked are about who cleared the
ad and if there are any ethical
checks on ad agencies. The Ad-
vertising Standards Council of
India has described it as a “seri-
ous breach of the ASCI Code.”
This is not the first time that
an ad with sexual overtones has
stirred a controversy. Starting
with Pooja Bedi-Robinson’s ad
for a condom in 1991 and Milind
Soman-Madhu Sapre advert of
a shoe brand, ad agencies have
attempted to cross the line.
They stirred a debate on nudity
but never ventured near rape
promotion. Whatever action is
being planned in the present
case, it should serve as a deter-
rent for others.
A
nforcement Direc-
torate’s summons
to Congress Presi-
dent Sonia Gan-
dhi and her son
Rahul for money laundering
in the National Herald case is
not a good omen if one goes
by the fate of opposition lead-
ers who have so far faced the
ED. Heading the list is P. Chi-
dambaram, former Finance
Minister, who was first ar-
rested by the CBI in the INX
Media case in 2019. After he
had spent over 50 days in
Tihar jail, the ED got his cus-
tody in the same case. Chid-
ambaram’s son Karti is now
in ED’s cross-hairs.
Relief from courts is diffi-
cult to come by as was seen in
Chidambaram and other po-
litical leaders’ cases. The lat-
est victim of the ED has been
Aam Aadmi Party leader
Satyender Jain who was ar-
rested towards the end of
May after several appearanc-
es before the investigating
agency in connection with
alleged hawala transactions.
Maharashtra’s Shiv Sena
leader Anil Parab, National-
ist Congress Party’s Nawab
Malik and Anil Deshmukh,
all ministers in the Maha Vi-
kas Aghadi government are
in jail under the Prevention
of Money Laundering Act.
All of them have been denied
relief by courts. Waiting in
the queue are Karnataka’s
DK Shivakumar and TMC’s
Abhishek Banerjee.
The Gandhis who, like oth-
ers, are facing accusations of
money laundering are lead-
ers whom Prime Minister
Narendra Modi and Home
Minister Amit Shah may
want to see pinned to finish
off the Congress before 2024
Lok Sabha elections. The ED
is best equipped to do that. At
this point there must be ap-
prehension in the minds of
party leaders, and for good
reason too.

E
Jawaharlal Nehru replied to
Gandhiji’s letter on October 9, 1945
My dear Bapu,
have received today, on my return from
Lucknow, your letter of 5th October. I
am glad you have written to me fully and
I shall try to reply at some length but I
hope you will forgive me if there is some
delay in this, as I am at present tied up
with close-fitting engagements. I am
only here now for a day and a half. It is
really better to have informal talks but just at present
I do not know when to fit this in. I shall try.
Briefly put, my view is that the question before us is
not one of truth versus untruth or non-violence versus
violence. One assumes as one must that true coopera-
tion and peaceful methods must be aimed at, and a
society which encourages these must be our objec-
tives. The whole question is how to achieve this society
and what its content should be. I do not understand
why village should necessarily embody truth and non-
violence. A village, normally speaking, is backward in-
tellectually and culturally and no progress can be made
from a backward environment. Narrow minded people
are much more likely to be untruthful and violent.
Then again we have to put down certain objectives
like a sufficiency of food, clothing, housing, education,
sanitation etc. which should be the minimum require-
ments for the country and for everyone. It is with
these objectives in view that we must find out specifi-
cally how to attain them speedily. Again it seems to
me inevitable that modern means of transport as well
as many other modern developments must continue
and be developed. There is no way out of it except to
have them. If that is so, inevitably a measure of heavy
industry exists. How far will that fit in with a purely
village society? Personally I hope that heavy or light
industries should all be decentralised as far as pos-
sible and this is feasible now because of the develop-
ment of electric power. If two types of economy exist
in the country there should be either conflict between
the two or one will overwhelm the other.
The question of independence and protection from
foreign aggression, both political and economic, has
also to be considered in this context. I do not think it is
possible for India to be really independent unless she is
a technically advanced country. I am not thinking for the
moment in terms of just armies but rather of scientific
growth. In the present context of the world we cannot
even advance culturally without a strong background of
scientific research in every department. There is today
in the world a tremendous acquisitive tendency both
in individual and groups and nations, which lead to
conflicts and wars. Our entire society is based on this
more or less. That basis must go and be transformed
into one of cooperation, which is cut off from the rest of
world, but rather one isolated India may well be a kind
of vacuum which increase the acquisitive tendencies of
others and thus creates conflicts.
There is no question of palaces for millions of
people. But there seems to be no reason why mil-
lions should not have comfortable up-to-date homes
where they can lead a cultured existence. Many of the
present overgrown cities have developed evils which
are deplorable. Probably we have to discourage this
overgrowth and at the same time encourage the vil-
lage to approximate more to the culture of the town.
It is many years ago since I read Hind Swaraj and
I have only a vague picture in my mind. But even
when I read it 20 or more years ago it seemed to
me completely unreal. In your writing and speeches
since then I have found much that seemed to me an
advance on that old position and an appreciation of
modern trends. I was therefore surprised when you
told us that the old picture still remains intact in your
mind. As you know, the Congress has never asked it
to adopt it except for certain relatively minor aspects
of it. How far it is desirable for the Congress to con-
sider these fundamental questions, involving varying
philosophies of life, it is for you to judge. I should
imagine that a body like the Congress should not lose
itself in arguments over such matters which can only
produce great confusion in people’s minds resulting in
inability to act in the present. This may also result in
creating barriers between the Congress and others in
the country. Ultimately of course this and other ques-
tions will have to be decided by representatives of free
India. I have a feeling that most of these questions are
thought of and discussed in terms of long ago, ignor-
ing the vast changes that have taken places all over
the world during the last generations or more. It is 38
years since Hind Swaraj was written. The world has
completely changed since then, possibly in a wrong
direction. In any event any consideration of these
questions must keep present facts, forces and the hu-
man material we have today in view, otherwise it will
be divorced from reality. You are right in saying that
the world, or a large part of it, appears to be bent on
committing suicide. That may be an inevitable devel-
opment of an evil seed in civilisation that has grown.
I think it is so. How to get rid of this evil, and yet how
to keep the good in the present as in the past is our
problem. Obviously there is good too in the present.
These are some random thoughts hurriedly written
down and I fear they do injustice to the grave import
of the questions raised. You will forgive me, I hope,
for this jumbled presentation. Later, I shall try to write
more clearly on the subject.
I hope you are keeping well and have completely
recovered from the attack of influenza.
Yours affectionately
Jawaharlal

for many more parties.
Earlier he used to fight
the cases of Congress

got angry with the Con-

the Congress leaders
were left, for a moment,
to fend for themselves.
Several leaders began
to inquire whether
Sibal would contest
their case or not. Later,
everyone was assured
by Sibal that he would
continue to fight the
cases of Congress lead-

which Sibal appeared in
court on his return to

nomination with the
support of the Sama-

was that of Congress
leader P Chidambaram.
After this the confi-

Meanwhile, there is

also fight the case of
Aam Aadmi Party lead-
ers. Keep in mind that
Congress and AAP are
on opposite ends of the
spectrum, but there has
been a lot of ‘friendship’

also talked about an alli-
ance in the assembly
elections. Recently,
when AAP leader and

Shortly after his arrest,

5-year-old girl’s sample sent for testing
Ghaziabad (Agen-

five-year-old was col-
lected for monkeypox
testing as a precau-
tionary measure after
she complained of
itching and rashes on
her body, the chief
medical officer (CMO)
of Uttar Pradesh’s
Ghaziabad told ANI on
Saturday
.
The CMO added the
girl didn’t have any
other health issues
and nor had she or any
of her close contacts
traveled abroad in the
past month.
The World Health
Organisation on
Thursday said that the
monkeypox virus has
spread to more than 30
nations and about 550
confirmed cases have
been reported.
The WHO classifies
non-endemic coun-
tries as those which
are reporting chains
of transmission for
the first time without
any known epidemio-
logical links.
Recently, the Indian
government also is-
sued guidelines relat-
ed to the disease.
THE STORY SO FAR
MONKEYPOX
GUIDELINES
WHAT ARE THE
SYMPTOMS?
FIRST HUMAN CASE
IDENTIFIED IN 1970
The Union Health
Ministry on Tuesday
had issued “Guidelines
on Management of
Monkeypox Disease.”
Even though India
hasn’t reported any
monkeypox cases yet,
the ministry has acted
proactively to ensure
advance preparedness
across the country. It
stressed surveillance,
rapid identification.
There is no
confirmation of
monkeypox case in
India as per the
government. After the
sample of the minor in
Ghaziabad was sent
for testing for
monkeypox,
government health
sources said it is
“unnecessary panic
mongering” as no
cases are reported.
According to the WHO,
the incubation period
for monkeypox is
usually 7−14 days but
can range between
5−21 days, too.
Following this, fever,
rash, severe headache,
backache, muscle
aches (myalgia),
intense asthenia (lack
of energy), and
swollen lymph nodes
kick in.
The first case of human
monkeypox was identified
in 1970 in a Congo boy
(9), two years after
smallpox had been
eradicated from the region.
WHAT IS THE
DISEASE EXACTLY?
CONTAINING
INFECTION
Mostly transmitted to
humans from animals,
monkeypox is a viral
zoonotic disease. Most
cases of the
monkeypox infection
are found in West and
Central Africa.
According to the WHO,
the monkeypox virus
is similar to human
smallpox. Although
monkeypox is said to
be much milder than
smallpox, with a
mortality rate of up to
10%, it can be fatal in
rare cases. Monkeypox spreads
through “close
contact with
lesions, body fluids,
respiratory
droplets.” Since it
is spread by close
contact, it can be
contained through
measures such as
self-isolation.

New Delhi (Agen-
cies): Steel prices in
the domestic market
have fallen by almost a
tenth in the two weeks
since the Centre levied
export duty on the al-
loy, a trend under-
scored by the seasonal
slowdown in demand.
Prices of domestic
benchmark hot-rolled
coil (HRC) steel at the
traders’ end have
slipped by about 8% or
5,500 to about 63,800
per tonne since May 18,
according to SteelMint,
a market intelligence
agency. Top steelmak-
ers have also quoted
prices for June that are
lower by 4,500-5,500 a
tonne, said people with
knowledge of the mat-
ter.
The government lev-
ied a 15% export duty
on steel, effective May
22, to rein in prices in
its bid to arrest infla-
tion. It also levied a
steep duty on the ex-
port of iron ore while
cutting the import duty
on key raw materials
such as coal to reduce
the cost of steel pro-
duction. While these
measures have helped
tame prices in the do-
mestic market, the de-
cline began before the
changes.
“Globally too, prices
have been correcting,”
said Ranjan Dhar, chief
marketing officer, Ar-
celorMittal Nippon
Steel India.
“Prices have come
down in the US, UK,
and China, thus there
is a correction in India
too,” Dhar said. “We to-
tally understand and
appreciate the govern-
ment’s concern on in-
flation and hope with
these corrections,
which have already
happened, these con-
cerns are more than ad-
dressed.”

This means the new

The order also sets con-

Trai has initiated an-
other consultation pro-

address the concerns of
stakeholders. It said the
decision was taken
“keeping in view the

process”.
Trai had received
several representations
from distribution plat-

said party OBC Morcha
national president K

Laxman said, “The

cance. Recently top lead-
ers like PM Modi, Home

Now party's top leader-

“Whether Assembly

BJP is confident to win.
In the by-elections in

Laxman said BJP is

Naqvi’s candidature

with that possibility
also coming to an end,
the only Muslim Minis-

In fact, the BJP which

.
In the Lok Sabha, Me-

idea of LiFE was intro-

Minister during the
26th United Nations

last year.
The idea promotes an
environment conscious
lifestyle that focuses on
‘mindful and deliberate
utilisation’ instead of
‘mindless and destruc-
tive consumption’.
Recently at the World
Economic Forum’s
(WEF) Davos Agenda
2022, PM Modi intro-
duced the “P3 (Pro-

ment” that underlines
India’s climate change
commitments.
He pointed towards
the challenges that our
lifestyle causes for the
climate.
New Delhi (ANI): The
Delhi Commission for

en suo-moto cognizance
of a misogynistic ad-
vertisement of a per-
fume brand being
played repeatedly in
mass media, stated the
notice from DCW chair-
man Swati Maliwal.
“The said advertise-
ment shows a boy and a
girl, apparently a cou-
ple sitting on a bed
when four more boys
enter the room. One boy
asks, “Shot mara lagta
hai!”, the boy sitting on
the bed says, “Ha mara
na “. Then the first boy
says “Ab hamari bari”
and moves towards the
girl. The girl appears to
be shocked and uncom-
fortable on the series of
events. Thereafter, the
boy picks up a bottle of
a body spray named
‘Shot’ and the girl looks
visibly relieved as she
just got saved from get-
ting gang raped!”, said
DCW. The Information
and Broadcasting Min-
istry on Saturday or-
dered the suspension of
the controversial deo-
dorant advertisement
and has also initiated
an inquiry as per the
advertising code.
According to DCW,
this advertisement is
clearly promoting sexu-
al violence against
women and girls and
encouraging a rapist
mentality amongst
men. “The advertise-
ment is cringe-worthy,
and should not be al-
lowed to be played on
mass media”, wrote
DCW.
The DCW has regis-
tered an FIR into the
matter and has also
sought detailed action
taken report on the mat-
ter by June 9.
The DCW has also
written to IB Minister
Anurag Thakur about
the controversial adver-
tisement.

‘Vote for Subhash Chandra’:
RajBSP’swhiptoitsturncoats
First India Bureau
Jaipur: The Rajasthan
BSP Saturday issued a
whip asking six MLAs
who had won as BSP
candidates but later
merged with the Con-
gress to vote for only
Independent candidate
Subhash Chandra who
is in the fray for the
June 10 Rajya Sabha
elections.
Issuing the whip, BSP
state president Bhag-
wanSinghBabasaidthe
six MLAs had won their
seats in the 2018 state
polls on BSP symbol and
“are bound to work as
per the party whip”.
“The BSP does not
agree with the policies
of the Congress and the
BJP, and therefore op-
poses their candidates.
The party has issued a
whip directing the
MLAs to vote for the In-
dependent candidate,”
he said, adding appro-
priate action will be
taken if the whip is vio-
lated. The six MLAs are:
Rajendra Gudha,
Lakhan Meena, Deep-
chand Kheria, Sandeep
Yadav, Joginder Awana
and Wajib Ali.
However, legal ex-
perts claim that the
whip does not hold any
authority since iot has
no legal base.

The programme of Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot’s depar-
ture on Saturday for Udaipur was postponed. Gehlot
will now go to Udaipur on Sunday and stay in Udaipur
for a few days and will handle the crisis management of
Rajya Sabha elections from there. The biggest task at the
moment is to convince the angry Congress MLAs. Con-
gress Legislature Party meeting may be held in Udaipur

ing. On June 9, MLAs will shift back to Jaipur.
WHY IS
‘SAFFRONISING’ OF
GANGULY NOT A
TRIVIAL MATTER?
Since it is vital for the
BJP to maintain its
presence in Bengal, the
party felt the need to
paint a living Bengali
icon like Sourav Gan-
guly in the ‘deep saf-
fron’ colours. Interest-
ingly, the ‘open chal-
lenge’ thrown by Mama-
ta Banerjee that ‘now
there is ‘no entry’ for
BJP in Bengal is being
taken a bit seriously by
the BJP
. So Ganguly can
prove to be a trump card
for the BJP and word is
that ‘development’ is
afoot. This can be said
from the recent tweet of
the cricketer
in which
h e
has said in gestures, ‘He
is planning to do some-
thing new’. Few days
back when Home Minis-
ter Amit Shah visited
Bengal, Ganguly invited
him over for a meal at
his house. In fact, the
BJP was running be-
hind Ganguly for many
years to join the party,
but Ganguly did not
seem interested then.
However, this time, be-
hind Ganguly’s changed
expressions, his com-
pulsions are more visi-
ble. Ganguly’s tenure as
the President of BCCI
ends on July 27. Before
becoming the President
of BCCI, he was the
President of ‘CAB’ i.e.
Cricket Association of
Bengal, then he
took over the
charge of
BCCI in
2019. Ac-
c o r d -
ing to
the rec-
ommen-
dations
of
the Lodha Committee, a
person will have to take
a mandatory break of
three years after being
president for six con-
secutive years. Ganguly
hasservedasBCCIPres-
identfor3years,butthis
time the BCCI has gone
to court to ‘wave off’ the
‘cooling period’ of 3
years for Ganguly
. The
BCCI says that Ganguly
is such a big name that
he should be seen as an
exception to this rule
and now the matter is
pending in the court. Bi-
har Cricket Association
secretary Aditya Ver-
ma, who took this whole
matter to court,
has also
changed his colours in
support of Ganguly
. He
has also argued in the
court to compromise on
some names. Given his
uncertain future, Gan-
guly has also agreed to
go saffron. And perhaps
Ganguly’s inclusion
will solve the real prob-
lem before BJP, i.e. to
retain its current 18
seats in the 2024 general
elections.
WHY DID NAQVI
HAVE TO LEAVE?
No one can deny the
important role of
Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi
in giving a headline to
the journey of BJP’s
wishes. His media
friendly person-
ality has come
in handy for
BJP many
times, so when
he was not giv-
en the Rajya
Sabha ticket
this time, it be-
came the
m o s t
surprising development
in the party
. 22 seats
were vacant, many such
individualsalsowonthe
RS ‘lottery’ who had no
hope of reaching the
hallowed upper house,
however, Naqvi’s name
was not one of the lucky
leaders, even though he
also ran the minority
ministry in such a way
that the ministry’s spir-
its rose high. Naqvi’s
ambitious project ‘Hu-
nar Haat’ added to the
popularity of the gov-
ernment. Ever since the
Gyanvapi controversy
took hold, the Sangh
and the BJP have tried
to formu-
late a
new
‘Hindu Narrative’ i.e.
Muslim Mukt Party,
Parliament and Govern-
ment. But there is also a
section in the party that
wanted to field Naqvi in
the Rampur by-election.
Rampur has 47 percent
Hindu, 4 percent Sikh
and 49 percent Muslim
voters. Owaisi is also
thinking of fielding his
party’s candidate from
there. If any of Azam
Khan’s wife or son does
not enter the fray, then
they too will knowingly
or unknowingly help
the BJP
. And it will also
be a question of Modi
government’s honour,
so the entire adminis-
tration including CM
Yogi will also be ‘ac-
tive’ there. But even
after this Naqvi
was not fielded
from Rampur,
rather BJP has
fielded Ghanshy-
am Lodhi in his
place. Is this a fare-
well time for the
graceful and
media
friendly Naqvi?

M
ajor is a film based on Major Sandeep
Unnikrishnan, who was martyred dur-
ing the 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai
in 2008. To play the role of Major’s wife
comes with great responsibility
. The role is es-
sayed by the young actor, Saiee Manjrekar and
she has made a credible mark. She is fearless
and she is subtle, she emotes with her eyes and
holds herself throughout the narrative. She
supports and she leads and she does it all with
the grace and panache of a seasoned actor.
Therefore, when Sandeep
Unnikrishnan’s moth-

Saiee, it is a mat-

shoutout to all the
mango lovers.
Whether one is look-
ing for a healthy
breakfast smoothie,
delicious fresh
snacks, mango pre-
serves, pickles or baking a
dessert there is a recipe for
all in this collection.
Mango, the king of fruits,
appears once a year during
summers. It is consumed in
different forms both ripe
and unripe. Ripe sweet
mangoes are either con-
sumed as it is or mango des-
serts are made with them.
Unripe mangoes are used to
make different forms of
pickles in many homes.
They are also utilised to
make recipes such as chut-
ney and beverages. Multi-
ple varieties of Indian man-
goes such as kesar, badami,
dasheri, langda, safeda, to-
tapuri, chausa, neelam and
alphonso, etc are available
in the markets. Here are 10
easy ways to make sum-
mers scrumptious.

bags, water, mango, sugar
and some ice cubes. Blend

Yesterday, the Bhalswa landfill site caught fire in the after- noon and since today, plumes of smoke have continued to emanate from the site. Earlier in April, dense plumes of smoke kept billowing out from the site after a fire broke out on April 26 and firefighters battled to douse the flames for six consecutive days. “I have been living here for the last 20 years and have been seeing this from that time. No changes happened in this landfill. We are fac- ing many problems like breathing and cough- ing. etc. We want a per- manent solution for this,” a local resident said. Justice Yogesh Khanna observed that when there is credible material to indicate the real and live ap- prehension of a pos- sible threat or coer- cion being employed at the time of record- ing of statement, such a direction may be passed but since there is no apprehension raised in the present matter, the direction ought not to have been given as a matter of right. The judge, who had on June 3 re- served its order on the Enforcement Directo- rate’s plea challeng- ing the direction, fur- ther noted that since there is neither any FIR nor a complaint against the AAP lead- er, he cannot as a mat- ter of right claim to have the presence of his lawyers during the course of record- ing of his statement. New Delhi (PTI): After receiving a “large num- ber of complaints” from the general public and civic employees, au- thorities at the Munici- pal Corporation of Del- hi have decided that a daily ‘Jan Sunwai’ will be held at its headquar- ters and the zonal offic- es to address grievanc- es, officials said. The MCD launched the ‘Jan Sunwai’ cam- paign on Friday and said, this effort will prove to be a “milestone in the dissemination of civic services”. According to an offi- cial order dated June 3, Additional Commis- s i o n e r ( H Q ) , MCD, shall hold public hearings on all working days at the Civic Cent- er, head- quarters of the M C D , from 12 noon to 1 PM. New Delhi (PTI): The number of retail liquor stores in the city has gone down by around 200, with many licen- sees quitting the busi- ness due to “financial losses” and problems faced by them under new excise policy re- gime, sources have said. A total of 849 liquor store licences were is- sued by Delhi govern- ment last year under its excise policy 2021-22. However, only 639 stores were still open by May end this year, according to official figures The latest list of re- tail liquor stores shared by the excise depart- ment on its website showed that the num- ber has gone down to 464 in June. The excise policy 2021-22 that ended on May 31 was extended by two months by the Del- hi government’s excise department offering the retail licensees chance to renew their licenses paying fees on the pro rata basis for the extra period. However, many license holders did not opt for the extension and shut shops as they were already finding it difficult to reach break even after paying high license fees, liquor trad- ers claimed “There were different reasons that dampened the spirit of retailers, like the issue of open- ing liquor stores in non-conforming wards, the cut-throat competi- tion waged by heavy discounts, and the en- try of new brands in the market,” said a liquor trader. Due to a long period of tracheostomy and a missing portion of the windpipe, there was no airway for him to breathe normally. The boy had neither spoken nor eaten normally for the last seven years, doctors at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital said. “When I first saw the patient, I felt it was go- ing to be a very compli- cated airway and voice box surgery. Thus the to- tal strength of the oppo- sition is 125 MLAs. Apart from this, Con- gress has two MLAs and Raghuraj Pratap’s Jansatta Dal also has two MLAs. SP will win three Rajya Sabha seats on its own and its allies, but it is getting only one seat. The national presi- dent of SP has given two seats to others due to the compulsion of alli- ance, legal force and the compulsion of internal politics of the party. Think, Jharkhand Muk- ti Morcha government in Jharkhand is run- ning with the support of 17 Congress MLAs and Sonia Gandhi her- self called and talked to Chief Minister Hemant Soren, despite this He- mant did not give one seat to Congress, while Akhilesh left two seats. Three Samajwadi Party MPs are retiring as the tenure of Revati Raman Singh, Vish- wambhar Nishad and Sukhram Singh Yadav has come to an end. But instead of these three, SP , of its own doing, has got only one seat. Akh- ilesh Yadav himself sat down and nominated Kapil Sibal and Jayant Chaudhary , but both are not becoming MPs of his party . Sibal is an in- dependent and Jayant Choudhary will become the RLD MP. Technical- ly only one MP from SP will be elected i.e. Javed Ali. Therefore, SP is fac- ing a direct loss of two RS seats, even though the number game is in its favour. If Akhilesh wanted, he could have put pres- sure on Sibal to go to Rajya Sabha on SP tick- et instead of as an inde- pendent. But he didn’t. One was the pressure of Azam Khan and second- ly he himself was feel- ing the need of a big lawyer in Delhi. The compulsion to give tick- et to Jayant Chaudhary was because now he has aligned with all the par- ties in the state except the BJP . He fought elections with almost all parties like Congress, SP, RLD, Suheldev Bharatiya Sa- maj Party . In politics, if one keeps leaving every- one’s side, then it will be difficult to find a col- league in the future. So it was necessary for SP to hold RLD’s side. Why did Akhilesh settle for just one RS seat? DESPITE STRENGTH IN ASSEMBLY... Mandya: Security has been beefed up around the perimeter of Jamia Masjid in Karnataka’s Mandya district after right-wing Hindu outfits expressed their intent to chant the Hanuman Chalisa and protest out- side the mosque, on Saturday. Functionaries from the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal said they would recite the Hanuman Chalisa within a one kilometre radius of the disputed mosque. Police have been deployed to arrest demonstrators on the spot. New Delhi: Congress MP Karti Chidambaram on Saturday moved the Delhi high court seeking anticipatory bail in the case registered by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with the alleged Chinese visa scam, PTI reported. The bail application comes day after the trial court dismissed his anticipa- tory bail plea. On Friday, the trial court had rejected the bail plea of Karti Chidambaram and two others saying that the offence was very serious in nature. The court had also vacated the interim protection from arrest granted to the accused during the pendency of the bail plea. The ED hadbooked Karti Chidambaram and others in connection for money laundering in the case pertaining to the issuance of visas to 263 Chinese nationals to work on a project in Punjab in 2011. The probe agency had al- leged that Karti took 50 lakh bribes in exchange for the visas which were granted when his father P Chidambaram was the union home minister in the Congress-led UPA government. The juvenile was also identified on Friday but because it was night time, he could not be appre- hended as per rules. He was arrested on Saturday morning. Another key accused has been identified as Omair Khan (18).The Deputy Commissioner of Police (West Zone) clarified that as per the girl’s statement and other evidence, no MLA’s son was among the accused. Girl couldn’t reveal anything except one name, says police DCP Joel Davis said the victim couldn’t reveal anything about the culprits except just one name. They have formed special teams to arrest the accused. “We’ve identified five culprits as per CCTV footage and as per the statement of the victim,” Davis said. The crime allegedly involves children and grandchildren of politicians; one of the juveniles is the son of a prominent person (from CM KCR’s party), the police said. Girl’s father filed complaint after noticing injury marks on neck According to the DCP, the girl’s father said that his 17-year-old daughter had gone to a non-alcoholic party at a pub in Jubilee Hills on Saturday. After the girl returned, he noticed minor injuries on her neck. Thereafter, a case was registered under Sec- tions 354 and 323 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 9 read with 10 of the rotection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act with DCP (West Zone). Girl befriended one of the accused at pub before incident The police said that the girl had befriended one of the boys at the pub. The CCTV foot- age also showed the girl standing outside the pub with the sus- pected accused, who had offered to drop her home. However, they parked the car in the Jubilee Hills area and reportedly took turns to rape her while others stood guard outside the car. The risqué ad has been given thumbs down on social media. One Twitter user said that the communica- tions agency has “messed up big time.” The questions being asked are about who cleared the ad and if there are any ethical checks on ad agencies. The Ad- vertising Standards Council of India has described it as a “seri- ous breach of the ASCI Code.” This is not the first time that an ad with sexual overtones has stirred a controversy. Starting with Pooja Bedi-Robinson’s ad for a condom in 1991 and Milind Soman-Madhu Sapre advert of a shoe brand, ad agencies have attempted to cross the line. They stirred a debate on nudity but never ventured near rape promotion. Whatever action is being planned in the present case, it should serve as a deter- rent for others. A nforcement Direc- torate’s summons to Congress Presi- dent Sonia Gan- dhi and her son Rahul for money laundering in the National Herald case is not a good omen if one goes by the fate of opposition lead- ers who have so far faced the ED. Heading the list is P. Chi- dambaram, former Finance Minister, who was first ar- rested by the CBI in the INX Media case in 2019. After he had spent over 50 days in Tihar jail, the ED got his cus- tody in the same case. Chid- ambaram’s son Karti is now in ED’s cross-hairs. Relief from courts is diffi- cult to come by as was seen in Chidambaram and other po- litical leaders’ cases. The lat- est victim of the ED has been Aam Aadmi Party leader Satyender Jain who was ar- rested towards the end of May after several appearanc- es before the investigating agency in connection with alleged hawala transactions. Maharashtra’s Shiv Sena leader Anil Parab, National- ist Congress Party’s Nawab Malik and Anil Deshmukh, all ministers in the Maha Vi- kas Aghadi government are in jail under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. All of them have been denied relief by courts. Waiting in the queue are Karnataka’s DK Shivakumar and TMC’s Abhishek Banerjee. The Gandhis who, like oth- ers, are facing accusations of money laundering are lead- ers whom Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah may want to see pinned to finish off the Congress before 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The ED is best equipped to do that. At this point there must be ap- prehension in the minds of party leaders, and for good reason too. NOT A GOOD OMEN FOR CONGRESS The Gandhis who, like others, are facing accusations of money laundering are leaders whom Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah may want to see pinned to finish off the Congress before 2024 LS polls E Jawaharlal Nehru replied to Gandhiji’s letter on October 9, 1945 My dear Bapu, have received today, on my return from Lucknow, your letter of 5th October. I am glad you have written to me fully and I shall try to reply at some length but I hope you will forgive me if there is some delay in this, as I am at present tied up with close-fitting engagements. I am only here now for a day and a half. It is really better to have informal talks but just at present I do not know when to fit this in. I shall try. Briefly put, my view is that the question before us is not one of truth versus untruth or non-violence versus violence. One assumes as one must that true coopera- tion and peaceful methods must be aimed at, and a society which encourages these must be our objec- tives. The whole question is how to achieve this society and what its content should be. I do not understand why village should necessarily embody truth and non- violence. A village, normally speaking, is backward in- tellectually and culturally and no progress can be made from a backward environment. Narrow minded people are much more likely to be untruthful and violent. Then again we have to put down certain objectives like a sufficiency of food, clothing, housing, education, sanitation etc. which should be the minimum require- ments for the country and for everyone. It is with these objectives in view that we must find out specifi- cally how to attain them speedily. Again it seems to me inevitable that modern means of transport as well as many other modern developments must continue and be developed. There is no way out of it except to have them. If that is so, inevitably a measure of heavy industry exists. How far will that fit in with a purely village society? Personally I hope that heavy or light industries should all be decentralised as far as pos- sible and this is feasible now because of the develop- ment of electric power. If two types of economy exist in the country there should be either conflict between the two or one will overwhelm the other. The question of independence and protection from foreign aggression, both political and economic, has also to be considered in this context. I do not think it is possible for India to be really independent unless she is a technically advanced country. I am not thinking for the moment in terms of just armies but rather of scientific growth. In the present context of the world we cannot even advance culturally without a strong background of scientific research in every department. There is today in the world a tremendous acquisitive tendency both in individual and groups and nations, which lead to conflicts and wars. Our entire society is based on this more or less. That basis must go and be transformed into one of cooperation, which is cut off from the rest of world, but rather one isolated India may well be a kind of vacuum which increase the acquisitive tendencies of others and thus creates conflicts. There is no question of palaces for millions of people. But there seems to be no reason why mil- lions should not have comfortable up-to-date homes where they can lead a cultured existence. Many of the present overgrown cities have developed evils which are deplorable. Probably we have to discourage this overgrowth and at the same time encourage the vil- lage to approximate more to the culture of the town. It is many years ago since I read Hind Swaraj and I have only a vague picture in my mind. But even when I read it 20 or more years ago it seemed to me completely unreal. In your writing and speeches since then I have found much that seemed to me an advance on that old position and an appreciation of modern trends. I was therefore surprised when you told us that the old picture still remains intact in your mind. As you know, the Congress has never asked it to adopt it except for certain relatively minor aspects of it. How far it is desirable for the Congress to con- sider these fundamental questions, involving varying philosophies of life, it is for you to judge. I should imagine that a body like the Congress should not lose itself in arguments over such matters which can only produce great confusion in people’s minds resulting in inability to act in the present. This may also result in creating barriers between the Congress and others in the country. Ultimately of course this and other ques- tions will have to be decided by representatives of free India. I have a feeling that most of these questions are thought of and discussed in terms of long ago, ignor- ing the vast changes that have taken places all over the world during the last generations or more. It is 38 years since Hind Swaraj was written. The world has completely changed since then, possibly in a wrong direction. In any event any consideration of these questions must keep present facts, forces and the hu- man material we have today in view, otherwise it will be divorced from reality. You are right in saying that the world, or a large part of it, appears to be bent on committing suicide. That may be an inevitable devel- opment of an evil seed in civilisation that has grown. I think it is so. How to get rid of this evil, and yet how to keep the good in the present as in the past is our problem. Obviously there is good too in the present. These are some random thoughts hurriedly written down and I fear they do injustice to the grave import of the questions raised. You will forgive me, I hope, for this jumbled presentation. Later, I shall try to write more clearly on the subject. I hope you are keeping well and have completely recovered from the attack of influenza. Yours affectionately Jawaharlal K NATWAR SINGH The author is Former Minister of External Affairs of India Pandit Nehru replied to Bapu’s letter on his return from Lucknow on October 9, 1945 wherein, he hopes to engage in an informal talk revolving around myriad issues including to build up a society that I

Only when he got angry with the Con- gress and left the party, the Congress leaders were left, for a moment, to fend for themselves. Several leaders began to inquire whether Sibal would contest their case or not. Later, everyone was assured by Sibal that he would continue to fight the cases of Congress lead- ers. The CMO added the girl didn’t have any other health issues and nor had she or any of her close contacts traveled abroad in the past month. The World Health Organisation on Thursday said that the monkeypox virus has spread to more than 30 nations and about 550 confirmed cases have been reported. The WHO classifies non-endemic coun- tries as those which are reporting chains of transmission for the first time without any known epidemio- logical links. Recently, the Indian government also is- sued guidelines relat- ed to the disease. THE STORY SO FAR MONKEYPOX GUIDELINES WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS? FIRST HUMAN CASE IDENTIFIED IN 1970 The Union Health Ministry on Tuesday had issued “Guidelines on Management of Monkeypox Disease.” Even though India hasn’t reported any monkeypox cases yet, the ministry has acted proactively to ensure advance preparedness across the country. It stressed surveillance, rapid identification. There is no confirmation of monkeypox case in India as per the government. After the sample of the minor in Ghaziabad was sent for testing for monkeypox, government health sources said it is “unnecessary panic mongering” as no cases are reported. According to the WHO, the incubation period for monkeypox is usually 7−14 days but can range between 5−21 days, too. Following this, fever, rash, severe headache, backache, muscle aches (myalgia), intense asthenia (lack of energy), and swollen lymph nodes kick in. The first case of human monkeypox was identified in 1970 in a Congo boy (9), two years after smallpox had been eradicated from the region. WHAT IS THE DISEASE EXACTLY? CONTAINING INFECTION Mostly transmitted to humans from animals, monkeypox is a viral zoonotic disease. Most cases of the monkeypox infection are found in West and Central Africa. According to the WHO, the monkeypox virus is similar to human smallpox. Although monkeypox is said to be much milder than smallpox, with a mortality rate of up to 10%, it can be fatal in rare cases. Monkeypox spreads through “close contact with lesions, body fluids, respiratory droplets.” Since it is spread by close contact, it can be contained through measures such as self-isolation. Issuing the whip, BSP state president Bhag- wanSinghBabasaidthe six MLAs had won their seats in the 2018 state polls on BSP symbol and “are bound to work as per the party whip”. “The BSP does not agree with the policies of the Congress and the BJP, and therefore op- poses their candidates. The party has issued a whip directing the MLAs to vote for the In- dependent candidate,” he said, adding appro- priate action will be taken if the whip is vio- lated. The six MLAs are: Rajendra Gudha, Lakhan Meena, Deep- chand Kheria, Sandeep Yadav, Joginder Awana and Wajib Ali. However, legal ex- perts claim that the whip does not hold any authority since iot has no legal base. On June 9, MLAs will shift back to Jaipur. WHY IS ‘SAFFRONISING’ OF GANGULY NOT A TRIVIAL MATTER? Since it is vital for the BJP to maintain its presence in Bengal, the party felt the need to paint a living Bengali icon like Sourav Gan- guly in the ‘deep saf- fron’ colours. Interest- ingly, the ‘open chal- lenge’ thrown by Mama- ta Banerjee that ‘now there is ‘no entry’ for BJP in Bengal is being taken a bit seriously by the BJP . So Ganguly can prove to be a trump card for the BJP and word is that ‘development’ is afoot. This can be said from the recent tweet of the cricketer in which h e has said in gestures, ‘He is planning to do some- thing new’. Few days back when Home Minis- ter Amit Shah visited Bengal, Ganguly invited him over for a meal at his house. In fact, the BJP was running be- hind Ganguly for many years to join the party, but Ganguly did not seem interested then. However, this time, be- hind Ganguly’s changed expressions, his com- pulsions are more visi- ble. Ganguly’s tenure as the President of BCCI ends on July 27. Before becoming the President of BCCI, he was the President of ‘CAB’ i.e. Cricket Association of Bengal, then he took over the charge of BCCI in 2019. Ac- c o r d - ing to the rec- ommen- dations of the Lodha Committee, a person will have to take a mandatory break of three years after being president for six con- secutive years. Ganguly hasservedasBCCIPres- identfor3years,butthis time the BCCI has gone to court to ‘wave off’ the ‘cooling period’ of 3 years for Ganguly . The BCCI says that Ganguly is such a big name that he should be seen as an exception to this rule and now the matter is pending in the court. Bi- har Cricket Association secretary Aditya Ver- ma, who took this whole matter to court, has also changed his colours in support of Ganguly . He has also argued in the court to compromise on some names. Given his uncertain future, Gan- guly has also agreed to go saffron. And perhaps Ganguly’s inclusion will solve the real prob- lem before BJP, i.e. to retain its current 18 seats in the 2024 general elections. WHY DID NAQVI HAVE TO LEAVE? No one can deny the important role of Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi in giving a headline to the journey of BJP’s wishes. His media friendly person- ality has come in handy for BJP many times, so when he was not giv- en the Rajya Sabha ticket this time, it be- came the m o s t surprising development in the party . 22 seats were vacant, many such individualsalsowonthe RS ‘lottery’ who had no hope of reaching the hallowed upper house, however, Naqvi’s name was not one of the lucky leaders, even though he also ran the minority ministry in such a way that the ministry’s spir- its rose high. Naqvi’s ambitious project ‘Hu- nar Haat’ added to the popularity of the gov- ernment. Ever since the Gyanvapi controversy took hold, the Sangh and the BJP have tried to formu- late a new ‘Hindu Narrative’ i.e. Muslim Mukt Party, Parliament and Govern- ment. But there is also a section in the party that wanted to field Naqvi in the Rampur by-election. Rampur has 47 percent Hindu, 4 percent Sikh and 49 percent Muslim voters. Owaisi is also thinking of fielding his party’s candidate from there. If any of Azam Khan’s wife or son does not enter the fray, then they too will knowingly or unknowingly help the BJP . And it will also be a question of Modi government’s honour, so the entire adminis- tration including CM Yogi will also be ‘ac- tive’ there. But even after this Naqvi was not fielded from Rampur, rather BJP has fielded Ghanshy- am Lodhi in his place. Is this a fare- well time for the graceful and media friendly Naqvi? WHERE IS RAHUL? Away from the scorching heat of India, Rahul Gandhi is abroad, but his wherea- bouts are unknown. Yes, he was to appear before theEDonJune2,buthis lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi has sought time of June 13, citing his be- ing abroad. Here in In- dia, Rahul’s mother So- nia and sister Priyanka have contracted corona, while party MLAs are being taken to Chhattis- garh to avoid cross-vot- ing in Rajya Sabha elec- tions, but Rahul Gandhi is unconcerned about these things. He is in his own world and is dedi- cated to the cause too. In London, he met Tejash- wi Yadav and his newly wed Rajshree. Tejashwi had also reached Cam- bridgetospeakonIndia. As soon as Rahul met Rajshree, he first asked her name and got the answer - ‘Rajshree’. To this Rahulquippedsoft- ly , “But before mar- riage, your name was Rachel?” Ra- jshree remained silent while Tejashwi was also getting un- comfortable. Then Ra- hul said, “There was no need for you to change thenameaftermarriage ortokeepaHinduname. Look at my mother, even before marriage her name was Sonia, even now she is Sonia.” Un- comfortable with this openness of Rahul, Tejashwi thought it ap- propriate to move away from there immediately with his wife. After this, Rahul entered the con- ference hall with Sitar- am Yechury, and sat be- hind Yechury . After some time, Rahul said to Yechury, “I know what you are thinking right now?” Yechury wanted to know what was on Ra- hul’s mind and asked, “What?” To this Rahul quipped, “You are think- ing that you will go out of this hall and light a cigarette.” Hearing this Yechury couldn’t stop laughing.
