GURUGRAM
JUDGE’S ORDER
OFFERS HOPE
FOR SOCIETY
n one of the few such
orders against a pro-
ponent of hate, a Gu-
rugram court reject-
ed the bail applica-
tion of Rambhagat Gopal who
had shot at a person near Jamia
Milia last year in the presence
of a police posse. Gopal then
went to Pataudi in Haryana and
gave an inflammatory speech
calling for abduction of girls
and killing of those belonging to
a particular community. The
judge found his hate speeches as
an “obstacle to the growth of a
true democratic spirit”.
It is rare to see a right-wing
practitioner of hate being de-
nied freedom from prison hence
the Gurugram judge’s order
must be welcomed. He, however,
has the freedom to move the high
court. A positive trend is being
seen in the judiciary which is
becoming critical of the misuse
and partisan use of the criminal
laws. The onus of protecting
democratic values lies with poli-
ticians but when they fail it is for
judiciary to step in.

five-star railway

ister Narendra Modi sets a
new benchmark for the rail-
ways in the country and gives
a glimpse of the future.
Caught in red-tape and lack
of vision so far, the Indian
Railways seemed stuck in
time until the big ticket pri-
vatization move by the Modi
government. Gandhinagar
railway station, which has a
318-room hotel atop the
tracks, is the first to have
been redeveloped on a public-
private partnership model.
Looking at the beautifully
designed structure and the
five star facilities it is sup-
posed to make it the first sta-
tion of its kind in the coun-
try. As the government pro-
poses to redevelop 90 railway
stations on PPP model, one
can look forward to more
railway stations like Gandhi-
nagar. What is important is
the leveraging of real estate
potential and air space. For
the real estate lying idle with
the railways or under illegal
occupation this could be the
best possible solution.
The unique station offers
airport-like experience but
trains and stations are used
mostly by the poor who are
often forced to squeeze them-
selves in crowded compart-
ments. They are also used by
vandals who damage railway
property for the heck of it like
they did to Vande Bharat dur-
ing its inaugural run. Cam-
eras had to be subsequently
installed on the train to check
vandalism. One must take
pride in the changing face of
Indian railways, which is a
soft target for protesters who

elements is a bigger challenge
than modernising India.

omeone I dearly loved died,
and I suppressed all my feel-
ings of sorrow. These were
the feelings I did not want to
feel because of the deep pain
they would cause…” These
are the thoughts of a woman
who lost her husband.
It is not uncommon for a
person to repress grief. The
deathof anyonecloseisoneof
life’s greatest tragedies. Have
youorsomeoneyouknow,had
a similar experience?
When we lose someone,
feelings and attitudes may
surface that we have never
experienced before. We may
wonder, if we will ever feel
normal again. There is diffi-
culty accepting it, although
sometime may have gone by
.
The psychological shock or
being stunned, not able to
feel anything can be like an
anaesthetic. Such a shock
cushions one against the full
emotional impact of loss.
Along with initial numb-
ness, one goes through vari-
ous forms of denial. “There
must be some mistake!” can
often be heard in grief. For
some, the loss is difficult to
accept, if they were not with
the deceased person.
Despite the reality that our
family member is no longer
with us, our habits and mem-
ories may deny it. Some set
the wrong number of plates
for dinner or buy the depart-
ed one’s favourite food. Some
even have vivid dreams of the
deceased or imagine seeing
him. These are common reac-
tions to such a drastic change
in one’s life. The pain brings
with it other feelings that one
is not prepared to deal with.
Anger often accompanies
grief. It may be anger at doc-
tors and nurses, that they
should have done more in
caring for the deceased. Or at
times, anger at friends and
relatives who, it seems, say or
do the wrong thing. Some get
angry at the departed one for
neglecting his health.
On the heels of anger often
comes another feeling – guilt.
Some condemn or blame
themselves. They say, “He
would not have died if only I
had …” or tormented by
thoughts such as ‘I should
have – or should not have –
done this or that.’
Reactions to grief vary
greatly in intensity and dura-
tion. The important thing
about grieving is that it helps
the process of healing. Re-
pressing our feelings can be
harmful both physically and
emotionally. It will prevent
us from thinking clearly
.
Talking can be a helpful re-
lease. Giving words to sorrow
and sharing pain with a true
friend who will listen patient-
ly and sympathetically, can
bring a measure of relief.
Men often feel the need to
hold back tears. They are
taught, a “real” man doesn’t
cry. Cleansing oneself with
tears of grief is akin to lanc-
ing a wound to drain the in-
fection. A man or a woman is
entitled to the right to ex-
press sorrow.
We realize that no matter
how much we love a person,
we can’t control his or her
life. We cannot prevent the
unforeseen to happen. Dwell-
ing upon all kinds of “if on-
lys” does not change any-
thing, rather it slows our re-
covery from grief. Time can
never be reversed.
Some put their sentiments
on paper, others find vigor-
ous exercise helpful. Many
say that ‘time is a great heal-
er’, but time, by itself heals
nothing at all. It is what we
do with our time that either
harms or heals. We can use it
poorly by caving into self
pity, or can develop a fulfill-
ing life-pattern.
Accepting the situation re-
alistically, resuming respon-
sibilities and a daily routine
as quickly as possible, is prac-
tical. If there is no self-analy-
sis, grief can prolong for
years. A productive routine
brings back stability in life.
We can help the grieving
ones by placing ourselves in
their situation. Our patient
listening ear and reassuring
words show that we care. A
telephone call or helping in
official or financial formali-
ties can help the mourning
ones to take up their own
lives once more, and give
them comfort. Our initiative
and continuous presence
and assistance, at times for
weeks and months, can up-
lift a person from the depth
of sorrow.
The intense feelings linked
with grief are normal. By
avoiding taking major deci-
sions hurriedly, taking prop-
er rest and nutrition, and liv-
ing on a day-to-day basis,
makes it easier to bear.
Doing all that one can, does
not eliminate the pain. It
does not mean that we will no
longer cry or will forget our
deceased loved one. But we
can recover. And as we do,
what we have experienced
can make us more under-
standing and empathetic in
helping others to cope with a
similar loss.

Lucknow: Uttar
Pradesh has become the
focal point of BJP’s
electoral effort since re-
peating its victory in
what is otherwise called
the most ‘politically
charged’ state, would
set the party’s electoral
campaign as four other
states will go to poll
merely months after UP
.
And while all eyes
are set and tongues are
rolling how BJP has al-
ready taken lead by ap-
pointing backward and
Dalit community lead-
ers in Modi cabinet,
there is perhaps one as-
pect which no one has
looked into. When Sa-
majwadi party was in
power, it was accused of
appeasing Yadavs in UP
and as a result during
the election, while BJP
formed its government,
Yadav voted for the fa-
ther-son duo - Mulayam
and Akhilesh Yadav.
This means that Yadavs
form a substantial
chunk of electoral in
the state and keeping
this in mind, PM Modi
has included 4 mem-
bers in his cabinet, a
substantial number
which political observ-
ers have completely
overlooked.
As a result of the in-
clusion, leaders of the
Yadav community and
the BJP are campaign-
ing fiercely on this as-
pect in order to attract
Yadav votes. While
Modi’s new cabinet has
been introspected by
many, but in the midst
of all the interpreta-
tions, there was no
analysis from the as-
pect of making four
ministers of Yadav soci-
ety
. There were already
two Yadav ministers in
Union cabinet i.e Nity-
anand Rai and Rao In-
derjit Singh. The Yadav
communities from Bi-
har and Haryana are
interconnected through
familial ties and social
relations. Lalu Prasad
has a son-in-law Rao
Chiranjeevi and Sharad
Yadav’s daughter is also
married in Haryana. In
Bihar, Yadavs shy away
from voting for BJP and
have entirely associ-
ated themselves
with Lalu Prasad’s
party RJD. In
Jharkhand too, their
inclination re-
mains to-
wards RJD.
Nevertheless, after
making Bhupendra Ya-
dav the in-charge of Bi-
har, BJP has been con-
stantly trying to bring
Yadav’s in its fold. First
Ram Kripal Yadav was
made a minister and
then Nityanand Rai.
Now Modi has also
made Bihar in-charge
Bhupendra Yadav a
minister. Furthermore,
former RJD leader An-
napurna Devi, who
joined the BJP just be-
fore the Lok Sabha elec-
tions, has also been
made a minister at the
Centre.
In this way, there
have been four Yadav
ministers in Modi’s gov-
ernment who represent
Bihar, Jharkhand, Ra-
jasthan and Haryana.
So, it will be interesting
to watch Modi and
Shah’s ‘Yadav experi-
ment’ in the up-
coming UP
e l e c t i o n s
and also in
2024!

New Delhi: An inter-
esting game has just
been played in the na-
tional and regional
politics associated
with Bihar and yet
even those who claim
to know politics like
the back of their
hands,arestillblinded
to it. The ‘game’ was
first popularized by
Mulayam Singh Yadav
when he distanced
himself from his son
Akhilesh Yadav and
kept himself close to
brother Shivpal. Over
time, a message went
into the party and in
general public that
whatever Akhilesh is
doing, he is doing it of
hisownfreewill.Later
the whole party came
under Akhilesh’s con-
trol.
While this hap-
pened in UP, a neigh-
bouring state of Bihar
is also witnessing
something on these
lines where Nitish Ku-
mar and RCP Singh
areplayingthis‘mixed
game’. A message is
being created in the
media that RCP spoke
with BJP high com-
mand on his own and
became a minister at
the Centre, whereas
Nitish Kumar did not
want this.
Political circles in
Bihar and New Delhi
were abuzz that Nitish
Kumar did not even
congratulate RCP Sin-
gh on becoming a min-
ister. But just sit back
and think; can it real-
ly happen that with-
out Nitish’s will, RCP
Singh talks to the BJP
and the PM and be-
comes a minister?
While fact remains
that not even a minute
action be taken in Ja-
nataDal-Uwithoutthe
wishes of Nitish Ku-
mar.If hedidnotwant,
leave aside being a
minister at the Centre,
RCP Singh could not
have even spoken to
BJP leadership. How-
ever, the ‘eyewash’ is
in front and yet people
do not seem to be ob-
serving it and are still
under the illusion that
RCPSinghhasbecome
a minister by betray-
ing Nitish Kumar.
Keep in mind that
the BJP leadership, es-
pecially PM Modi,
needs Nitish Kumar,
not Singh. In the Lok
Sabha elections to be
held after three years,
Nitish’s face will get
votes for the BJP and
the NDA and the
Prime Minister knows
that. That is why noth-
ing has happened
without Nitish’s be-
hest. If there was even
theslightestconfusion
anywhere, the Prime
Minister could have
spoken directly to Nit-
ish. Many senior lead-
ers of BJP including
Bhupendra Yadav are
in touch with Nitish.
In fact, Nitish has,
in a way, handed over
his party to RCP Sin-
gh. He has been made
the national president
of the party and has
now been made a min-
ister at the center so
that in the future,
when he takes over the
reins of the party, his
stature remains ex-
tremely high.

POSTAL REG NO. JPC/010/2019-21
Rajendra Chhabra
Jaipur: Finally, after a
wait spanning 66 days,
the DoP issued orders to
hand over the charge of
Chairman of Tax
Board, Ajmer to Secre-
tary, Finance, T. Ravi-
kant. The post had been
lying vacant since re-
tirement of Giriraj Sin-
gh on April 30.
A delay in new post-
ing is not a new or rare
phenomenon, but the
reason for the delay in
giving additional
charge remains a mys-
tery
. The charge should
have been handed on
May 1, 2021 itself.
Notably, the post of
HOD in two important
departments is lying
vacant and as a result,
the Labour Department
and Civil Aviation De-
partment are in the dol-
drums. Labour Com-
missioner Prateek
Jhajharia was named
by the ACB on June 25
for graft and he was im-
mediately suspended.
DoP should have imme-
diately handed over the
additional charge of
Labour Commissioner
to a senior IAS, but as 22
days have passed, the
department still awaits
its new Commissioner
even as Labour Secre-
tary Neeraj K. Pawan
has been continuously
reminding the govern-
ment that the depart-
ment’s function has
come to a halt in ab-
sence of a HOD.
On the other hand,
the post of Commis-
sioner, Civil Aviation is
also lying vacant for
over a month now. The
charge of this post was
with Commissioner IT,
Virendra Singh, but
Singh has gone on a
long leave and although
the additional charge of
his post in the IT De-
partment has been
handed over to a junior
IAS officer, Abhimanyu
Kumar, but Civil Avia-
tion has been left to its
own fate.
Knowledge sources

trative power to give ad-
ditional charge lays
with the Chief Secre-
tary, for whom, it is not
necessary to seek per-
mission from the CMO.

He further added that

New Delhi: For far too
long, there has been a
demand of a third politi-
cal option in Rajasthan.
WhileCongressandBJP
have ruled the roost and
former BJP leader Ha-
numan Beniwal’s RLP
desperately trying to
come up as a viable op-
tion as ‘third front’, it
seems that Aam Aadmi

ticed by the prospect.
In what could be
termed as a major politi-
cal development in the
state, Independent MLA
and ex-BJP legislator
Om Prakash Hudla met

after his meeting with
AAP’s Manish Sisodiya.
Interestingly
,Sisodiya
took Hudla in his car to
meet Kejriwal at latter’s
residence, where the
men met for over one
a half hours word is
that Hudla has been of-
fered ‘charge’ of Ra-
jasthan, however the
MLA has not given an
answer on the offer.
It is said that Hudla
has told two leaders that
there is still time left in
Rajasthan. Now all eyes

her own ways.
Some discoveries

iran Desai, daughter
of renowned novelist,
Anita Desai, is an emi-
nent Indo-Anglican
writer. Her portrayal
of Indian culture and
traditions flow pas-
sionately through the veins of
her forced foreign setup. She
became popular after the pub-
lication of her second novel -
‘The Inheritance of Loss’ in
2006. This majestic book of our
busy, grasping times, illumi-
nates the consequences of colo-
nialism, and global conflicts of
religion, race and nationalism.
It won a number of awards, in-
cluding the Man Booker Prize
of 2006, the National Book Crit-
ics Circle Fiction award in
2007, and the Vodafone Cross-
word Book Award.
‘The Inheritance of Loss’-
the title itself is most intrigu-
ing. When one hears of an in-
heritance, it is usually some-
thing precious, so cherished,
that the next generation an-
ticipates it to be bequeathed
with pride and honour. Desai’s
‘Inheritance of Loss’, truly re-
flects her adeptness for irony.
This is a story of exiles at
home and abroad, of families,
broken and fixed, of love both
bitter and bittersweet. It be-
gins in the high North-Eastern
Himalayas in Kalimpong. In a
once-magnificent bungalow,
but now a crumbling remnant,
at the foot of Mount Kangchen-
junga lives an embittered old
judge who has retired from In-
dian civil service. He wants to
live in isolated peace with his
beloved dog Mutt and his cook.
Sai, his young granddaughter,
comes from a convent school to
live with him.
It is a turbulent time, filled
with dissatisfaction among
the population of Indian-Nep-
alese, who demand an inde-
pendent country of their own.
There is an insurgency to
draw new borders, that will
create harmony in theory, yet
violence is their only tool to
seek that peace. The Judge’s
home is robbed by members of
the Gorkhaland National Lib-
eration Front, who take their
food, liquor and guns. This in-
troduces, the political struggle
that the region is facing, as
well as the breakdown of the
social fabric. Chaos runs su-
preme, as gas, water electric-
ity is cut off. Law orderlies
in shambles.
The judge is Sai’s grandfa-
ther, who took her in after his
disowned daughter and her
husband were killed in a car
accident in Russia. It’s his way
to pay off the spiritual debts
thatheincurredafterabandon-
ing his wife, and later killing
her, as well as shaming his fa-
ther. He fights with his guilt.
He’s caught between the past
and the present, and cannot
reconcile with either.
Sai falls in love with her tu-
tor, Gyan. Throughout the sto-
ry
, they fight to accept the natu-
ral love they have created.
Their love is doomed from the
beginning because he is an eth-
nic Nepali, and she is an upper-
class, Western-educated Indian
girl. The cook watches over
them to make sure that Gyan
doesnottakeadvantageof Sai’s
good heart. At the same time,
he worries endlessly about his
own son, Biju, in the US.
Biju is the typical Indian im-
migrant who gets a
visa to the US and
stays illegally, work-
ing for slave wages in
the filthy, rat-infest-
ed, kitchen base-
ments of New York
City
. There he is used
and abused by his
bosses. He is disillu-
sioned and disgusted
with the way his life
is turning out. He decides to
leave the US with his earnings
andcomebacktohishome,and
to his father. On his return, he
is looted of all his gifts, belong-
ings, dollars and even the
clothes that he’s wearing. Fate
comes full circle. In giving up
what might be gained, both Sai
and Biju inherit loss, but that
loss will prove a lasting gain of
illuminating experience.
Throughoutthebook,thepo-
litical situation worsens, and
every person deals with it in
their own unique way

them are consumed with guilt
for how they have lived their
lives thus far and desire to
change their existences. Biju’s

TOP TWEET GURUGRAM JUDGE’S ORDER OFFERS HOPE FOR SOCIETY n one of the few such orders against a pro- ponent of hate, a Gu- rugram court reject- ed the bail applica- tion of Rambhagat Gopal who had shot at a person near Jamia Milia last year in the presence of a police posse. Gopal then went to Pataudi in Haryana and gave an inflammatory speech calling for abduction of girls and killing of those belonging to a particular community. The judge found his hate speeches as an “obstacle to the growth of a true democratic spirit”. It is rare to see a right-wing practitioner of hate being de- nied freedom from prison hence the Gurugram judge’s order must be welcomed. He, however, has the freedom to move the high court. A positive trend is being seen in the judiciary which is becoming critical of the misuse and partisan use of the criminal laws. The onus of protecting democratic values lies with poli- ticians but when they fail it is for judiciary to step in. I he ultra-modern five-star railway station at Gandhi- nagar inaugurat- ed by Prime Min- ister Narendra Modi sets a new benchmark for the rail- ways in the country and gives a glimpse of the future. Caught in red-tape and lack of vision so far, the Indian Railways seemed stuck in time until the big ticket pri- vatization move by the Modi government. Gandhinagar railway station, which has a 318-room hotel atop the tracks, is the first to have been redeveloped on a public- private partnership model. Looking at the beautifully designed structure and the five star facilities it is sup- posed to make it the first sta- tion of its kind in the coun- try. As the government pro- poses to redevelop 90 railway stations on PPP model, one can look forward to more railway stations like Gandhi- nagar. What is important is the leveraging of real estate potential and air space. For the real estate lying idle with the railways or under illegal occupation this could be the best possible solution. The unique station offers airport-like experience but trains and stations are used mostly by the poor who are often forced to squeeze them- selves in crowded compart- ments. They are also used by vandals who damage railway property for the heck of it like they did to Vande Bharat dur- ing its inaugural run. Cam- eras had to be subsequently installed on the train to check vandalism. One must take pride in the changing face of Indian railways, which is a soft target for protesters who resorttorailrokoattheslight- est pretext. Disciplining such elements is a bigger challenge than modernising India. GUJARAT GIVES A GLIMPSE OF FUTURE Indian Railways seemed stuck in time until big ticket privatization move by the Modi govt. Ltd. omeone I dearly loved died, and I suppressed all my feel- ings of sorrow. These were the feelings I did not want to feel because of the deep pain they would cause…” These are the thoughts of a woman who lost her husband. It is not uncommon for a person to repress grief. The deathof anyonecloseisoneof life’s greatest tragedies. Have youorsomeoneyouknow, had a similar experience? When we lose someone, feelings and attitudes may surface that we have never experienced before. We may wonder, if we will ever feel normal again. There is diffi- culty accepting it, although sometime may have gone by . The psychological shock or being stunned, not able to feel anything can be like an anaesthetic. Such a shock cushions one against the full emotional impact of loss. Along with initial numb- ness, one goes through vari- ous forms of denial. “There must be some mistake!” can often be heard in grief. For some, the loss is difficult to accept, if they were not with the deceased person. Despite the reality that our family member is no longer with us, our habits and mem- ories may deny it. Some set the wrong number of plates for dinner or buy the depart- ed one’s favourite food. Some even have vivid dreams of the deceased or imagine seeing him. These are common reac- tions to such a drastic change in one’s life. The pain brings with it other feelings that one is not prepared to deal with. Anger often accompanies grief. It may be anger at doc- tors and nurses, that they should have done more in caring for the deceased. Or at times, anger at friends and relatives who, it seems, say or do the wrong thing. Some get angry at the departed one for neglecting his health. On the heels of anger often comes another feeling – guilt. Some condemn or blame themselves. They say, “He would not have died if only I had …” or tormented by thoughts such as ‘I should have – or should not have – done this or that.’ Reactions to grief vary greatly in intensity and dura- tion. The important thing about grieving is that it helps the process of healing. Re- pressing our feelings can be harmful both physically and emotionally. It will prevent us from thinking clearly . Talking can be a helpful re- lease. Giving words to sorrow and sharing pain with a true friend who will listen patient- ly and sympathetically, can bring a measure of relief. Men often feel the need to hold back tears. They are taught, a “real” man doesn’t cry. Cleansing oneself with tears of grief is akin to lanc- ing a wound to drain the in- fection. A man or a woman is entitled to the right to ex- press sorrow. We realize that no matter how much we love a person, we can’t control his or her life. We cannot prevent the unforeseen to happen. Dwell- ing upon all kinds of “if on- lys” does not change any- thing, rather it slows our re- covery from grief. Time can never be reversed. Some put their sentiments on paper, others find vigor- ous exercise helpful. Many say that ‘time is a great heal- er’, but time, by itself heals nothing at all. It is what we do with our time that either harms or heals. We can use it poorly by caving into self pity, or can develop a fulfill- ing life-pattern. Accepting the situation re- alistically, resuming respon- sibilities and a daily routine as quickly as possible, is prac- tical. If there is no self-analy- sis, grief can prolong for years. A productive routine brings back stability in life. We can help the grieving ones by placing ourselves in their situation. Our patient listening ear and reassuring words show that we care. A telephone call or helping in official or financial formali- ties can help the mourning ones to take up their own lives once more, and give them comfort. Our initiative and continuous presence and assistance, at times for weeks and months, can up- lift a person from the depth of sorrow. The intense feelings linked with grief are normal. By avoiding taking major deci- sions hurriedly, taking prop- er rest and nutrition, and liv- ing on a day-to-day basis, makes it easier to bear. Doing all that one can, does not eliminate the pain. It does not mean that we will no longer cry or will forget our deceased loved one. But we can recover. And as we do, what we have experienced can make us more under- standing and empathetic in helping others to cope with a similar loss. THE VIEWS EXPRESSED BY THE AUTHOR ARE PERSONAL “ S REKHA KUMAR The writer is a personal development trainer working with corporate and SME sector The intense feelings linked with grief are normal. BJP outsmarts rivals with planstodentYadavvotebank! A COURTESY VISIT I B and Sports Minister Anurag Thakur greets Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah with a traditional Himachali topi . Vishal Srivastav Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh has become the focal point of BJP’s electoral effort since re- peating its victory in what is otherwise called the most ‘politically charged’ state, would set the party’s electoral campaign as four other states will go to poll merely months after UP . And while all eyes are set and tongues are rolling how BJP has al- ready taken lead by ap- pointing backward and Dalit community lead- ers in Modi cabinet, there is perhaps one as- pect which no one has looked into. When Sa- majwadi party was in power, it was accused of appeasing Yadavs in UP and as a result during the election, while BJP formed its government, Yadav voted for the fa- ther-son duo - Mulayam and Akhilesh Yadav. This means that Yadavs form a substantial chunk of electoral in the state and keeping this in mind, PM Modi has included 4 mem- bers in his cabinet, a substantial number which political observ- ers have completely overlooked. As a result of the in- clusion, leaders of the Yadav community and the BJP are campaign- ing fiercely on this as- pect in order to attract Yadav votes. While Modi’s new cabinet has been introspected by many, but in the midst of all the interpreta- tions, there was no analysis from the as- pect of making four ministers of Yadav soci- ety . There were already two Yadav ministers in Union cabinet i.e Nity- anand Rai and Rao In- derjit Singh. The Yadav communities from Bi- har and Haryana are interconnected through familial ties and social relations. Lalu Prasad has a son-in-law Rao Chiranjeevi and Sharad Yadav’s daughter is also married in Haryana. In Bihar, Yadavs shy away from voting for BJP and have entirely associ- ated themselves with Lalu Prasad’s party RJD. In Jharkhand too, their inclination re- mains to- wards RJD. Nevertheless, after making Bhupendra Ya- dav the in-charge of Bi- har, BJP has been con- stantly trying to bring Yadav’s in its fold. First Ram Kripal Yadav was made a minister and then Nityanand Rai. Now Modi has also made Bihar in-charge Bhupendra Yadav a minister. Furthermore, former RJD leader An- napurna Devi, who joined the BJP just be- fore the Lok Sabha elec- tions, has also been made a minister at the Centre. In this way, there have been four Yadav ministers in Modi’s gov- ernment who represent Bihar, Jharkhand, Ra- jasthan and Haryana. Anita Hada New Delhi: An inter- esting game has just been played in the na- tional and regional politics associated with Bihar and yet even those who claim to know politics like the back of their hands, arestillblinded to it. The ‘game’ was first popularized by Mulayam Singh Yadav when he distanced himself from his son Akhilesh Yadav and kept himself close to brother Shivpal. Over time, a message went into the party and in general public that whatever Akhilesh is doing, he is doing it of hisownfreewill.Later the whole party came under Akhilesh’s con- trol. While this hap- pened in UP, a neigh- bouring state of Bihar is also witnessing something on these lines where Nitish Ku- mar and RCP Singh areplayingthis‘mixed game’. A message is being created in the media that RCP spoke with BJP high com- mand on his own and became a minister at the Centre, whereas Nitish Kumar did not want this. Political circles in Bihar and New Delhi were abuzz that Nitish Kumar did not even congratulate RCP Sin- gh on becoming a min- ister. But just sit back and think; can it real- ly happen that with- out Nitish’s will, RCP Singh talks to the BJP and the PM and be- comes a minister? While fact remains that not even a minute action be taken in Ja- nataDal-Uwithoutthe wishes of Nitish Ku- mar.If hedidnotwant, leave aside being a minister at the Centre, RCP Singh could not have even spoken to BJP leadership. How- ever, the ‘eyewash’ is in front and yet people do not seem to be ob- serving it and are still under the illusion that RCPSinghhasbecome a minister by betray- ing Nitish Kumar. Keep in mind that the BJP leadership, es- pecially PM Modi, needs Nitish Kumar, not Singh. In the Lok Sabha elections to be held after three years, Nitish’s face will get votes for the BJP and the NDA and the Prime Minister knows that. That is why noth- ing has happened without Nitish’s be- hest. If there was even theslightestconfusion anywhere, the Prime Minister could have spoken directly to Nit- ish. Many senior lead- ers of BJP including Bhupendra Yadav are in touch with Nitish. In fact, Nitish has, in a way, handed over his party to RCP Sin- gh. He has been made the national president of the party and has now been made a min- ister at the center so that in the future, when he takes over the reins of the party, his stature remains ex- tremely high. JPC/010/2019-21 Rajendra Chhabra Jaipur: Finally, after a wait spanning 66 days, the DoP issued orders to hand over the charge of Chairman of Tax Board, Ajmer to Secre- tary, Finance, T. Ravi- kant. The post had been lying vacant since re- tirement of Giriraj Sin- gh on April 30. A delay in new post- ing is not a new or rare phenomenon, but the reason for the delay in giving additional charge remains a mys- tery . The charge should have been handed on May 1, 2021 itself. Notably, the post of HOD in two important departments is lying vacant and as a result, the Labour Department and Civil Aviation De- partment are in the dol- drums. Labour Com- missioner Prateek Jhajharia was named by the ACB on June 25 for graft and he was im- mediately suspended. DoP should have imme- diately handed over the additional charge of Labour Commissioner to a senior IAS, but as 22 days have passed, the department still awaits its new Commissioner even as Labour Secre- tary Neeraj K. Pawan has been continuously reminding the govern- ment that the depart- ment’s function has come to a halt in ab- sence of a HOD. On the other hand, the post of Commis- sioner, Civil Aviation is also lying vacant for over a month now. The charge of this post was with Commissioner IT, Virendra Singh, but Singh has gone on a long leave and although the additional charge of his post in the IT De- partment has been handed over to a junior IAS officer, Abhimanyu Kumar, but Civil Avia- tion has been left to its own fate. Knowledge sources reveal that the adminis- trative power to give ad- ditional charge lays with the Chief Secre- tary, for whom, it is not necessary to seek per- mission from the CMO. Assembly Speaker Dr CP Joshi intervened and settled the issue. Dr CP Joshi said that CM Ashok Gehlot wanted to attend the mega event, but he skipped it due to health reasons. LoP Gu- labchand Kataria said that till date, the exact treatment of Corona is not available. He said that when the lock- down was imposed in the first phase, people were angry at PM Modi’s decision. YOUR DAY Horoscope by Saurabbh Sachdeva iran Desai, daughter of renowned novelist, Anita Desai, is an emi- nent Indo-Anglican writer. Her portrayal of Indian culture and traditions flow pas- sionately through the veins of her forced foreign setup. She became popular after the pub- lication of her second novel - ‘The Inheritance of Loss’ in 2006. This majestic book of our busy, grasping times, illumi- nates the consequences of colo- nialism, and global conflicts of religion, race and nationalism. It won a number of awards, in- cluding the Man Booker Prize of 2006, the National Book Crit- ics Circle Fiction award in 2007, and the Vodafone Cross- word Book Award. ‘The Inheritance of Loss’- the title itself is most intrigu- ing. When one hears of an in- heritance, it is usually some- thing precious, so cherished, that the next generation an- ticipates it to be bequeathed with pride and honour. Desai’s ‘Inheritance of Loss’, truly re- flects her adeptness for irony. This is a story of exiles at home and abroad, of families, broken and fixed, of love both bitter and bittersweet. It be- gins in the high North-Eastern Himalayas in Kalimpong. In a once-magnificent bungalow, but now a crumbling remnant, at the foot of Mount Kangchen- junga lives an embittered old judge who has retired from In- dian civil service. He wants to live in isolated peace with his beloved dog Mutt and his cook. Sai, his young granddaughter, comes from a convent school to live with him. It is a turbulent time, filled with dissatisfaction among the population of Indian-Nep- alese, who demand an inde- pendent country of their own. There is an insurgency to draw new borders, that will create harmony in theory, yet violence is their only tool to seek that peace. The Judge’s home is robbed by members of the Gorkhaland National Lib- eration Front, who take their food, liquor and guns. This in- troduces, the political struggle that the region is facing, as well as the breakdown of the social fabric. Chaos runs su- preme, as gas, water electric- ity is cut off. Law orderlies in shambles. The judge is Sai’s grandfa- ther, who took her in after his disowned daughter and her husband were killed in a car accident in Russia. It’s his way to pay off the spiritual debts thatheincurredafterabandon- ing his wife, and later killing her, as well as shaming his fa- ther. He fights with his guilt. He’s caught between the past and the present, and cannot reconcile with either. Sai falls in love with her tu- tor, Gyan. Throughout the sto- ry , they fight to accept the natu- ral love they have created. Their love is doomed from the beginning because he is an eth- nic Nepali, and she is an upper- class, Western-educated Indian girl. The cook watches over them to make sure that Gyan doesnottakeadvantageof Sai’s good heart. At the same time, he worries endlessly about his own son, Biju, in the US. Biju is the typical Indian im- migrant who gets a visa to the US and stays illegally, work- ing for slave wages in the filthy, rat-infest- ed, kitchen base- ments of New York City . There he is used and abused by his bosses. He is disillu- sioned and disgusted with the way his life is turning out. He decides to leave the US with his earnings andcomebacktohishome, and to his father. On his return, he is looted of all his gifts, belong- ings, dollars and even the clothes that he’s wearing. Fate comes full circle. In giving up what might be gained, both Sai and Biju inherit loss, but that loss will prove a lasting gain of illuminating experience. Throughoutthebook,thepo- litical situation worsens, and every person deals with it in their own unique way .
