ith an aim to for-
mally blow the
electoral bugle
and to reinvigor-
ate the party cad-
re to brace for the
‘battle 2023’,
Bhartiya Janta Party’s National
President JP Nadda is reaching
Jaipur today
. With a little over a
year left for the assembly elec-
tions in Rajasthan, Nadda has a
lot on his hands to handle; from
‘quelling’ the internal tussle for
‘premiership’ of the state, to end
factionalism and breathe in new
‘josh’ in the workers, to strategis-
ing for the elections; all the tasks
seem to be falling in Nadda’s lap,
perhaps only because here is a
leader capable of ‘fighting the
bigger battles’ yet staying
grounded and low profile. The
‘General’ of ‘BJP Army’ Nadda
will not only address a meeting
of party office bearers in the
evening on May 19, but on May 20
and May 21 will continue his
role, as the BJP’s national office
bearers mull amongst them-
selves on various political equa-
tions across nation and strate-
gies going ahead for various as-
sembly elections. Interestingly,
since it will be a grand ocassion
for the BJP, the party has even
managed to extend a grander
welcome to Nadda as pachy-
derms have been roped in to offer
garlands to the national presi-
dent at BJP state chief Satish
Poonia’s constituency - Amer - on
his way to Leela Palace hotel
where the entire three day
programme is being held!
Now, all eyes are glued
on BJP’s programme
and Nadda’s arrival
from the heart of
national politics
- New Delhi, to
the heart of
Raj’s politics -

TOP TWEETS
REGIONAL
PARTIES ARE
DOING BETTER
THAN CONGRESS
AGAINST THE BJP
he Congress is offi-
cially headed by So-
nia Gandhi and not
her son Rahul, but it
is the latter who calls
the shots in the party
, and creates
problems. Hardik Patel leaving
the Congress to possibly join the
Bharatiya Janata Party will
prove costly for the party in
termsof PatidarvotesinGujarat
but Rahul is taking it too lightly
.
Or so it seems. Patel is not the
only one. Before him it was He-
manta Biswa Sarma whose part-
ing proved to be an irreparable
loss for the Congress in the
north-east. Humiliation, which
forced Captain Amarinder Singh
to quit, was another example of
Rahul’s ineptitude.
Rahul’s recent statement on
regional parties has also drawn
flak. The Congress has a strong
presence only in Rajasthan and
Chhattisgarh, while regional
parties have done better than
the grand old party against the
BJP. West Bengal, Telangana
and Tamil Nadu are proof that
Rahul should not undervalue
regional parties which have
done better than the Congress.
T
he Supreme Court
order releasing
AG Perarivalan, a
convict in former
Prime Minister
Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination
has fuelled a two-faceted row.
One, the Congress has taken
umbrage to the convict’s re-
lease and asked if the re-
maining six will be freed too.
Two, the verdict has given
the Tamil Nadu government
a handle to criticise the state
Governor who sat over the
state Cabinet’s recommenda-
tion to remit Perarivalan’s
sentence. There are other is-
sues over which the Gover-
nor has dragged his feet an-
gering the MK Stalin govern-
ment.
The TN Governor set a re-
cord of sorts in his stalling
Perarivalan’s remission. The
Supreme Court commuted
Perarivalan’s death sentence
to life imprisonment in 2014
because decision on his mer-
cy petition was being inordi-
nately delayed. In 2015 he ap-
plied to the Governor for
pardon and sought remission
of his sentence. In 2018 the
top court asked the Governor
to decide on his pardon plea.
But the Governor did not give
it a thought. Soon after, the
State Cabinet recommended
that Perarivalan be released
forthwith. Again in 2020, the
apex court said that the Gov-
ernor was competent to grant
remission even if investiga-
tion against Perarivalan was
on. The CBI too left it to the
Raj Bhawan’s discretion.
The Governor still did not
act and the convict continued
to languish in jail stating that
the power of remission vest-
ed in the President. Welcom-
ing the order as victory for
“state autonomy”, Stalin
said, Governors have no pow-
ers to interfere in the govern-
ment’s decisions. Stalin must
remember that one swallow
doesn’t make a summer. The
present verdict won’t change
the Governor’s ways.
SC ENDS A GUV’S
INDECISION
Welcoming the order as
victory for “state
autonomy”, Stalin said,

ARMY SECULARISM
A POSSIBLE ROLE MODEL
FOR INDIAN SOCIETY TODAY
n the last two months the
state of Rajasthan has wit-
nessed communal riots over
issues involving religious
faiths of two communities. A
review of the recent commu-
nal violence has shown that
although secularism and reli-
gious freedom have been re-
stored in the constitution but
the realities on ground have
been different. Unfortunately
,
in India secularism is more
of a subject of politics than
of metaphysics or even val-
ues. This is one of the major
reasons of eruptions of such
rioting endangering commu-
nal harmony. While we can
keep debating and blaming
on factors like appeasement
of minority by some or re-
duced tolerance of majority
by others, failure of law en-
forcing agencies and so many
others but in reality it’s a fail-
ure of unique Indian society
which derives its strength
from ‘Unity in Diversity’ and
‘Peaceful Co-Existence’
which has been prevailing in
our country for ages. The con-
stitution of India aims gov-
ernance that allows people of
all religions to live in peace
and harmony. The govern-
ance and politics must deal
with administrative fairness
and economic development
of its citizens and keep per-
sonal beliefs like religion and
social customs out of its do-
main unless they contravene
the established rule of law.
The Indian Army is a secu-
lar organisation and all offic-
ers and soldiers serve the Na-
tionwithprideirrespectiveof
their religion, caste, creed or
gender. It’s been a decade and
a half since I hung my uni-
form and as a retired Army
Officer, I have been a witness
to the fact that our people are
easily tricked and provoked
falling prey to the hate mon-
gers on name of caste, creed,
religion and regionalism. In
the army, each officer identi-
fies with the religion of his
troops. In regiments where
the soldiers are from more
than one religion, the officers
and all jawans attend the
weekly religious prayers
mainly referred as ‘Mandir
Parade’ for all the faiths.
Indian army genuinely be-
lieves in two eternal truths -
the oneness of God and vic-
tory in operations. Both are
so inter related and have been
deeply rooted in Olive Green
hearts that we fail to see any-
thing beyond this eternal
truth. On one occasion in 1992
in my mixed Arty Regiment
where we traditionally had a
Mandir and an ad hoc Gurud-
wara, the CO proposed estab-
lishing a ‘Sarv Dharama
Sthal’ to enable co locating
sacred symbols and books of
all religions. Later on a Regi-
mental celebration day
, I was
thrilled to see our Pandit Ji
with a Granthi, a Maulvi, a
Pastor all under one roof in
theunit‘SarvDharamaSthal’
offering prayers and partici-
pating in the function. In my
opinion, there can never be a
better portrait of national in-
tegration or secularism.
Amongst many other ac-
tivities in Army, one of the
most popular one is Sports
and this binds the whole unit
as one inseparable team. The
team is represented by just
single name of Paltan and
the selection criteria is mer-
it as there are no distinctions
on caste, creed, regions or
religions. Rather as a team
captain of a Division Hand-
ball team I never knew who
belonged to which religion or
region. We all prayed togeth-
er and played together with
perfect harmony
.
Lastly
, it’s the operations
that truly reflect the camara-
derieandspiritdecorpsinthe
well knit bonded organisation
like Indian Army
. There are
floods of examples of display
of oneness by the soldiers to
defend their honour and safe-
tyof thecountry-areligionin
most true sense for any Fouji.
I can recall an Operations
roomof aDivisiondeployedin
active operations. The staff
and the troops who were exe-
cuting the operational task on
ground had faith in different
religion. The operations were
completed in 96 hours giving
no breaks or rest to any of the
team members. Everyone was
contributing more than hun-
dred percent and the morale
and performance of troops on
ground as amazing. It was in-
deed an Army Unit with Mus-
lim troops who caused maxi-
mum damage to Pakistan
posts.Attheendof operations
when the celebrations were
on, I asked myself did anyone
even know or talk about caste,
creed, religion or region of
others - no not even once. So
whyarewesomuchintocaste,
creed, religion or regionalism
in normal daily life.
THE VIEWS EXPRESSED BY
THE AUTHOR ARE PERSONAL
I
For an Indian soldier, his
religion is the Indian Army
or the nation and the faith he
belongs to doesn’t really
matter as much while he is
serving people of the nation.
This is the single most reason
why Indian Army still
remains the most trusted
institution of the country in
the eyes of common man. I
wish our entire country
follows in the footsteps of our
Army which is epitome of
Secularism, National
Harmony and Unity

Chennai/New Delhi: More than
three decades after he was impris-
oned in the Rajiv Gandhi assassina-
tion case, life convict AG Perariva-
lan was set to walk free on Wednes-
dayaftertheSupremeCourtordered
his release. The top court order
to release Perarivalan comes
after a long-winded legal bat-
tle. Besides lawyers and Ta-
mil Nadu politicians fight-
ing his cause, his septuage-
narian mother Arputham
Ammal has flown across
the country to meet every
leader possible to help in
the release of her son.
Over the years, his re-
lease seemed imminent
several times but al-
ways seemed to
elude him.
However, the
first step to him
walking free
came on March 9 this year, when the
SupremeCourtgrantedhimbail–up
to this point, he had only been out on
parole, and was in fact on his third
paroletoundergomedicaltreatment
for various illnesses he had devel-
oped when the bail order had come.
After observing in a previous hear-
ing that Perarivalan’s conduct in jail
was good, and that he was being dis-
criminated against under Article 14
of the Constitution (right to equali-
ty), a bench of Justices L Nageswara
Rao and BR Gavai granted him bail.
ACCUSED OF BUYING TWO 9-VOLT
BATTERIES USED IN ASSASSINATION
Perarivalan was 19-year-old at the time of Rajiv
Gandhi’s assassination. He was accused of buy-
ing the two 9-volt batteries for Liberation Tigers
of Tamil Eelam (LTTE)’s Sivarasan, who master-
minded the criminal act. The batteries were used
in the bomb to assassinate Gandhi. Perarivalan
had claimed all along that he wasn’t aware of the
purpose of the batteries.
MY 31 YEARS IN PRISON IS THE MESSAGE:
PERARIVALAN SAYS AFTER RELEASE
After the Supreme Court order, Perarivalan said,
“For the past 31 years, only the legal fight was
in our minds. I have been released only today. I
have to breathe now. I will discuss with my fam-
ily about my future.” “My 31 years in prison is the
message,” he added. His father Kuildasan, mother
Arputhammal, and sister Anbumani hailed the apex
court’s decision.
‘SORROW AND FURY, CONGRESS
SENTIMENT OVER THE RELEASE’
The Congress Wednesday expressed pain and
disappointment over the release of Rajiv Gan-
dhi assassination case convict A G Perarivalan.
Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala
said there is a sorrow and fury not only in every
Congress worker, but in every citizen.

Jaipur (PTI): A Jaipur
court has dismissed a
plea accusing Raj CM
Ashok Gehlot of prac-
tising witchcraft and
suggested that the com-
plainant should seek
medical help for his
mental health.
The Additional Ses-
sions Court upheld the
decision of the subordi-
nate court in the case
on Tuesday and said the
complainant filed the
plea on purely fictitious
grounds. The court ob-
served that the mental
health of the complain-
ant, who is an advocate,
is not good and instead
of seeking medical
treatment, he has filed a
case against Gehlot.
Petitioner Ashish
Saini had alleged that
Gehlot had practised
witchcraft on him and
that it had impaired his
speech.
“Prima facie, it does
not appear from state-
ments of the complain-
ant that any offence has

Chandigarh (Agen-

of the 13 demands.
While a formal an-

minister Kuldeep Singh

to it was a meeting be-

13 demands, the two
sides could not reach a

After the meeting,

INDIA PLANS TO DEPLOY S-400
MISSILES BY JUNE: PENTAGON
Washington (Agen-

deploy the Russian-
made S-400 missile de-
fence system by next
month to defend itself
from Pakistani and Chi-
nese threats as it is pur-
suing an extensive mili-

fort encompassing air,
ground, naval and stra-

Pentagon’s top intelli-
gence official has said
during a Congressional
hearing.
India started receiv-
ing the delivery of the
S-400 missile defence
system from Russia in
December last year,
Lieutenant General
Scott Berrier, Director
of Defence Intelligence
Agency, told members
of the Senate Armed
Services Committee
during a recent Con-
gressional hearing.
As of October 2021,
India’s military was
seeking to procure ad-
vanced surveillance
systems to strengthen
its land and sea borders
and boost its offensive
and defensive cyber
capabilities.“In Decem-
ber, India received its
initial delivery of the
Russian S-400 air de-
fence system, and it in-
tends to operate the sys-
tem to defend against
Pakistani and Chinese
threats by June 2022,”
Lt Gen Berrier said.
“India continued to
develop its own hyper-
sonic, ballistic, cruise
and air defence missile
capabilities, conduct-
ing multiple tests in
2021. India has a grow-
ing number of satellites
in orbit, and is expand-
ing its use of space as-
sets, likely pursuing of-
fensive space capabili-
ties,” he said.
Lt Gen Berrier told
the lawmakers that New

passing air, ground, na-

ar forces with an em-
phasis on domestic de-

US TO OFFER INDIA $500 MN IN MILITARY AID
The US is preparing a military aid
package for India to deepen se-
curity ties and reduce the country’s de-
pendence on Russian weapons, people
familiar with the matter said. The pack-
age under consideration would include
foreign military financing of as much
as $500 million, according to one
person, which would make India one
of the largest recipients of such aid
behind Israel and Egypt. It’s unclear
when the deal would be announced, or
what weapons would be included. The

K’taka BJP postpones
Cabinet expansion
Bengaluru (Agen-

postponed the much
awaited cabinet ex-
pansion in Karnata-
ka. Sources in the
party have said that
the decision has been
taken in view of elec-

The party leaders,
fearing cross voting
by the disgruntled
members, have decid-
ed not to give any
room for it at all.

well as BBMP elec-

The elections to 9
seats of Council and 4
Rajya Sabha seats
have already been de-
clared. The top brass
does not want to take
any chances and is
not in favour of open-
ing Pandora’s Box by
cabinet expansion.
CM Bommai recent-
ly maintained that the
party high command
will take a final call on
cabinet expansion. He
also said that the deci-
sion to allot ticket to
BY Vijayendra, son of
former CM BS Yedi-
yurappa whether to
contest MLC polls in
the state, lies with the
top leadership.
The core committee
had recommended Vi-
jayendra’s name for
the MLC. Sources in
the party say that the
stage is all set for min-
isterial berth for Vi-
jayendra.
However, the top
leaders are yet to take
a final call on the is-
sue as some party
leaders are apprehen-
sive about Vijayendra
becoming a power
centre in the govern-
ment as Yediyurappa
is going to throw his
weight behind his son.
Meanwhile, as the
cabinet expansion is
being delayed, the op-

has issued statements
that many BJP top
leaders have ap-
proached them.
Fearing cross voting, State BJP halts Cabinet expansion.

New Delhi (PTI): The
Supreme Court on
Wednesday gave the
go-ahead for local
body polls in Madhya
Pradesh with OBC res-
ervation, allowing the
state government to
notify the reservation
pattern on the basis of
the recommendations
in a second report of a
state backward class-
es commission.
A bench presided by
Justice A M Khan-
wilkar took into ac-
count the state’s sub-
mission that an earlier
report which the court
had objected to had
been revised and that
the delimitation exer-
cise had already been
completed and notified.
“For the time being,
we permit the Madhya
Pradesh state election
commission to notify
the programme for the
respective local bodies
keeping in mind the
delimitation notifica-
tion already issued as
on date .i.e. till today
and the report submit-
ted by the dedicated
commission…,” the
Supreme Court or-
dered. “We permit the
state of Madhya
Pradesh to notify the
reservation pattern lo-
cal body wise to be ad-
hered to by the state
election commission
within one week.
The state election
commission shall no-
tify the election pro-
gramme in respect of
the concerned local
bodies thereafter with-
in one week.”
On May 10, the court
had directed that the
elections to the local
bodies be notified
within two weeks with-
out providing for OBC
reservation as the
state was yet to com-
plete the triple test laid
down by the SC before
providing for such res-
ervation.

World Meteorological Organization says extreme weather wreaked heavy toll on human lives
FOUR CRITICAL CLIMATE INDICATORS
BROKE RECORDS IN 2021: UN REPORT
Geneva (Agencies):
Four critical global in-
dicators of the climate
crisis broke records in
2021, according to a UN
report, from rising
oceans to the levels of
heat-trapping emis-
sions in the atmos-
phere.
Greenhouse gas con-
centrations, sea-level
rise, ocean heat, and
ocean acidification, set
four new climate
change records in 2021,
the World Meteorologi-
cal Organization
(WMO) said Wednes-
day
.
The UN World Mete-
orological Organiza-
tion (WMO) said these
were clear signs of hu-
manity’s impact on the
planet, which was
bringing long-lasting
effects. Extreme
weather, which the
WMO called the day-to-
day face of the climate
emergency, wreaked a
heavy toll on human
lives and led to hun-
dreds of billions of
dollars in damages, the
agency said.
Droughts and floods
triggered food price
rises that have been ex-
acerbated in 2022. The
WMO’s State of the
Global Climate in 2021
report also found the
past seven years have
been the hottest record-
ed. “Today’s State of
the Climate report is a
dismal litany of hu-
manity’s failure to tack-
le climate disruption.
Fossil fuels are a dead
end – environmentally
and economically,” said
António Guterres, the
secretary general of
the UN. “The only sus-
tainable future is a re-
newable one. The good
news is that the lifeline
is right in front of us.
Wind and solar are
readily available and,
in most cases, cheaper
than coal and other fos-
sil fuels. If we act to-
gether, the renewable
energy transformation
can be the peace project
of the 21st century
.”
Prof Petteri Taalas,
the WMO secretary gen-
eral, said: “Our climate
is changing before our
eyes. Human-induced
greenhouse gases will
warm the planet for
many generations to
come. Some glaciers
have reached the point
of no return and this
will have long-term re-
percussions in a world
in which more than 2
billion people already
experiencewaterstress.
“Extreme weather
has the most immedi-
ate impact on our daily
lives,” he said. “We are
seeing a drought emer-
gency unfolding in the
Horn of Africa, recent
deadly flooding in
South Africa and the
extreme heat in India
and Pakistan. Early
warning systems are
critically required [to
save lives] yet these are
only available in less
than half of WMO’s
187 member nations.”
The world’s oceans
absorb more than 90%
of the heat trapped by
greenhouse gases and
2021 set a record. The
increasing warmth in
the ocean, which is ir-
reversible over time-
scales of centuries to
millennia, has been es-
pecially strong in the
last 20 years. Much of
the ocean experienced
at least one strong ma-
rine heatwave in 2021,
the WMO said.
The global sea level
also reached a new re-
cord high in 2021. It has
increased by 10cm since
1993 and the rise is ac-
celerating, driven by the
melting of ice sheets
and glaciers and the
thermal expansion of
the ocean. The rise im-
perils hundreds of mil-
lions of coastal dwell-
ers, the WMO said, and
increases the damage
caused by hurricanes
and cyclones.
POLLUTION CLAIMED 9 MN LIVES GLOBALLY
IN 2019, INDIA TOPS THE LIST: LANCET
New Delhi: Pollution

nine million deaths in
2019 — equivalent
to one in six deaths
worldwide — and India

million deaths, accord-
ing to a study published
on Wednesday in The
Lancet Planetary Health.
Of the nearly 2.4 million
deaths in 2019, air
pollution accounted for
16.7 lakh deaths — the
highest by any country.
Further, more than 5
lakh lives were lost in
the country due to water
pollution, followed by
occupational pollution
(more than one lakh)
and lead exposure (over
2 lakh). Globally, of the
nine million pollution
— attributable deaths in
2019, air pollution (both
household and ambient)

deaths, followed by toxic
occupational hazards at
870,000 deaths.

the infrastructural de-

Jaipur: The situation
in PHED refuses to be-
come better and even
today not everything is
well in the department.
In fact, word is that
there is a ‘tussle’ be-
tween minister Dr Ma-
hesh Joshi and ACS
Subodh Agarwal. Eve-
ryone in the depart-
ment knows Additional
Chief Engineer of the
department - Arun Sriv-
astava - is one of trusted
official of the minister
and the official has
complete ‘power’ in the
department.
However, an incident on
Tuesday shocked every-
one. In a major meeting,
ACS Subodh Agarwal
not only scolded Srivas-
tava, but even went on
to say, “You have been
perched in Jaipur for
too long, now we will
have to send you out of
here.” The ACS had
called the meeting with
Collectors and senior
officials of PHED over
drinking water supply.
When Jhunjhunu Col-
lector raised com-
plaints, one after the
other, over water sup-
ply, it showed Srivasta-
va’s irresponsible acts,
which did not go down
well with hard taskmas-
ter Agarwal. Without
caring about Srivastava
being minister’s favour-
ite, he took a class of
the officer in the meet-
ing. Officials in the de-
partment claim that the
water supply situation
in Srivastava’s area of
Dausa and Sikar is also
worse, a fact that has
come in notice of ACS.
Such is the situation
between Srivastava and
minister Joshi that
even after four months
of a charge sheet has
been given against Sriv-
astava regarding scam
worth crores of rupees
in the water testing lab
case, Joshi has not tak-
en any action till now.
Former Principal secre-
tary Rajesh Yadav had
caught this scam and he
prepared chargesheet.
Actually, clashes be-
tween minister, secre-
tary and engineers has
become a constant in
PHED. In the begin-
ning, the relation be-
tween BD Kalla and
Sandeep Verma had
soured to such an ex-
tent that minister gave
him 7 marks in ACR
which was followed by
clashes between Kalla
Rajesh Yadav. This was
followed by tussle be-
tween Joshi ACS Pant.
But now a new tussle
has erupted between
minister Joshi and Sub-
odh Agarwal. Sources
reveal that Arun Srivas-
tava is looking to be-
come Director of WSSO
aswellasACEof Jaipur
city, which is possible
with minister’s ‘aa-
shirwad’. But now it
remains to be seen if
after Tuesday’s inci-
dent, Srivastava can
stay in Jaipur or not.

der chairmanship of CM Gehlot, on Wednesday. It was
decided to authorize district collectors to open fodder
depots in such districts of the state, which are not
affected by famine and where the price of fodder has
increased. Along with this, necessary funds have been
made available to district collectors for the purpose of
water for districts having shortage of drinking water.
The financial burden due to pressure of Centre to buy
imported coal was also discussed. It was decided to
constitute Cabinet sub-committee to address problems
caused by stray animals in urban areas instructions
were also given for smooth operation of Gaushala.
Jaipur: CM Ashok Gehlot spoke on inflation in nation
on Wednesday. In a series of tweets, Gehlot said, “The
wholesale inflation rate in country has reached a record
15.08%. Wholesale inflation rate is more than 10% for
the last one year.” CM also said, “The value of rupee
has fallen to a historic low of 1 dollar = Rs 77.74, due to
which prices of all imported goods are increasing. Fears
of a reduction in foodgrain production this year may fur-
ther increase inflation. It seems that economic policies
of Centre have failed and they have no plan to control
inflation. Instead of diverting country’s attention to

JP Nadda's 3-day visit to Jaipur to boost BJP ahead of 2023 Rajasthan polls

  • 1. JAIPUR! JAIPUR l THURSDAY, MAY 19, 2022 l Pages 14 l 3.00 RNI NO. RAJENG/2019/77764 l Vol 3 l Issue No. 341 www.firstindia.co.in https://firstindia.co.in/epapers/jaipur twitter.com/thefirstindia facebook.com/thefirstindia instagram.com/thefirstindia OUR EDITIONS: JAIPUR, LUCKNOW, NEW DELHI & MUMBAI Aditi Nagar ith an aim to for- mally blow the electoral bugle and to reinvigor- ate the party cad- re to brace for the ‘battle 2023’, Bhartiya Janta Party’s National President JP Nadda is reaching Jaipur today . With a little over a year left for the assembly elec- tions in Rajasthan, Nadda has a lot on his hands to handle; from ‘quelling’ the internal tussle for ‘premiership’ of the state, to end factionalism and breathe in new ‘josh’ in the workers, to strategis- ing for the elections; all the tasks seem to be falling in Nadda’s lap, perhaps only because here is a leader capable of ‘fighting the bigger battles’ yet staying grounded and low profile. The ‘General’ of ‘BJP Army’ Nadda will not only address a meeting of party office bearers in the evening on May 19, but on May 20 and May 21 will continue his role, as the BJP’s national office bearers mull amongst them- selves on various political equa- tions across nation and strate- gies going ahead for various as- sembly elections. Interestingly, since it will be a grand ocassion for the BJP, the party has even managed to extend a grander welcome to Nadda as pachy- derms have been roped in to offer garlands to the national presi- dent at BJP state chief Satish Poonia’s constituency - Amer - on his way to Leela Palace hotel where the entire three day programme is being held! Now, all eyes are glued on BJP’s programme and Nadda’s arrival from the heart of national politics - New Delhi, to the heart of Raj’s politics - Jaipur! W JP Nadda PM Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah congratulating JP Nadda on taking over as BJP National President.

Hon’ble PM @narendramodi Ji will be hosting the entire contingent at his residence on the morning of the 21st May. TOP TWEETS REGIONAL PARTIES ARE DOING BETTER THAN CONGRESS AGAINST THE BJP he Congress is offi- cially headed by So- nia Gandhi and not her son Rahul, but it is the latter who calls the shots in the party , and creates problems. Hardik Patel leaving the Congress to possibly join the Bharatiya Janata Party will prove costly for the party in termsof PatidarvotesinGujarat but Rahul is taking it too lightly . Or so it seems. Patel is not the only one. Before him it was He- manta Biswa Sarma whose part- ing proved to be an irreparable loss for the Congress in the north-east. Humiliation, which forced Captain Amarinder Singh to quit, was another example of Rahul’s ineptitude. Rahul’s recent statement on regional parties has also drawn flak. The Congress has a strong presence only in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, while regional parties have done better than the grand old party against the BJP. West Bengal, Telangana and Tamil Nadu are proof that Rahul should not undervalue regional parties which have done better than the Congress. T he Supreme Court order releasing AG Perarivalan, a convict in former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination has fuelled a two-faceted row. One, the Congress has taken umbrage to the convict’s re- lease and asked if the re- maining six will be freed too. Two, the verdict has given the Tamil Nadu government a handle to criticise the state Governor who sat over the state Cabinet’s recommenda- tion to remit Perarivalan’s sentence. There are other is- sues over which the Gover- nor has dragged his feet an- gering the MK Stalin govern- ment. The TN Governor set a re- cord of sorts in his stalling Perarivalan’s remission. The Supreme Court commuted Perarivalan’s death sentence to life imprisonment in 2014 because decision on his mer- cy petition was being inordi- nately delayed. In 2015 he ap- plied to the Governor for pardon and sought remission of his sentence. In 2018 the top court asked the Governor to decide on his pardon plea. But the Governor did not give it a thought. Soon after, the State Cabinet recommended that Perarivalan be released forthwith. Again in 2020, the apex court said that the Gov- ernor was competent to grant remission even if investiga- tion against Perarivalan was on. The CBI too left it to the Raj Bhawan’s discretion. The Governor still did not act and the convict continued to languish in jail stating that the power of remission vest- ed in the President. Welcom- ing the order as victory for “state autonomy”, Stalin said, Governors have no pow- ers to interfere in the govern- ment’s decisions. Stalin must remember that one swallow doesn’t make a summer. The present verdict won’t change the Governor’s ways. SC ENDS A GUV’S INDECISION Welcoming the order as victory for “state autonomy”, Stalin said, Governors have no powers to interfere in the government’s decisions. Stalin must remember that one swallow doesn’t make a summer. The present verdict won’t change the Governor’s ways T Promoted by Shree Cement Limited ARMY SECULARISM A POSSIBLE ROLE MODEL FOR INDIAN SOCIETY TODAY n the last two months the state of Rajasthan has wit- nessed communal riots over issues involving religious faiths of two communities. A review of the recent commu- nal violence has shown that although secularism and reli- gious freedom have been re- stored in the constitution but the realities on ground have been different. Unfortunately , in India secularism is more of a subject of politics than of metaphysics or even val- ues. This is one of the major reasons of eruptions of such rioting endangering commu- nal harmony. While we can keep debating and blaming on factors like appeasement of minority by some or re- duced tolerance of majority by others, failure of law en- forcing agencies and so many others but in reality it’s a fail- ure of unique Indian society which derives its strength from ‘Unity in Diversity’ and ‘Peaceful Co-Existence’ which has been prevailing in our country for ages. The con- stitution of India aims gov- ernance that allows people of all religions to live in peace and harmony. The govern- ance and politics must deal with administrative fairness and economic development of its citizens and keep per- sonal beliefs like religion and social customs out of its do- main unless they contravene the established rule of law. The Indian Army is a secu- lar organisation and all offic- ers and soldiers serve the Na- tionwithprideirrespectiveof their religion, caste, creed or gender. It’s been a decade and a half since I hung my uni- form and as a retired Army Officer, I have been a witness to the fact that our people are easily tricked and provoked falling prey to the hate mon- gers on name of caste, creed, religion and regionalism. In the army, each officer identi- fies with the religion of his troops. In regiments where the soldiers are from more than one religion, the officers and all jawans attend the weekly religious prayers mainly referred as ‘Mandir Parade’ for all the faiths. Indian army genuinely be- lieves in two eternal truths - the oneness of God and vic- tory in operations. Both are so inter related and have been deeply rooted in Olive Green hearts that we fail to see any- thing beyond this eternal truth. On one occasion in 1992 in my mixed Arty Regiment where we traditionally had a Mandir and an ad hoc Gurud- wara, the CO proposed estab- lishing a ‘Sarv Dharama Sthal’ to enable co locating sacred symbols and books of all religions. Later on a Regi- mental celebration day , I was thrilled to see our Pandit Ji with a Granthi, a Maulvi, a Pastor all under one roof in theunit‘SarvDharamaSthal’ offering prayers and partici- pating in the function. In my opinion, there can never be a better portrait of national in- tegration or secularism. Amongst many other ac- tivities in Army, one of the most popular one is Sports and this binds the whole unit as one inseparable team. The team is represented by just single name of Paltan and the selection criteria is mer- it as there are no distinctions on caste, creed, regions or religions. Rather as a team captain of a Division Hand- ball team I never knew who belonged to which religion or region. We all prayed togeth- er and played together with perfect harmony . Lastly , it’s the operations that truly reflect the camara- derieandspiritdecorpsinthe well knit bonded organisation like Indian Army . There are floods of examples of display of oneness by the soldiers to defend their honour and safe- tyof thecountry-areligionin most true sense for any Fouji. I can recall an Operations roomof aDivisiondeployedin active operations. The staff and the troops who were exe- cuting the operational task on ground had faith in different religion. The operations were completed in 96 hours giving no breaks or rest to any of the team members. Everyone was contributing more than hun- dred percent and the morale and performance of troops on ground as amazing. It was in- deed an Army Unit with Mus- lim troops who caused maxi- mum damage to Pakistan posts.Attheendof operations when the celebrations were on, I asked myself did anyone even know or talk about caste, creed, religion or region of others - no not even once. So whyarewesomuchintocaste, creed, religion or regionalism in normal daily life. THE VIEWS EXPRESSED BY THE AUTHOR ARE PERSONAL I For an Indian soldier, his religion is the Indian Army or the nation and the faith he belongs to doesn’t really matter as much while he is serving people of the nation. This is the single most reason why Indian Army still remains the most trusted institution of the country in the eyes of common man. I wish our entire country follows in the footsteps of our Army which is epitome of Secularism, National Harmony and Unity COL RAJESH BHUKAR The author is a retired Army officer SECULARISM IN INDIA IS MORE OF A SUBJECT OF POLITICS... Areview of the recent communal violence has shown that although secularism and religious freedom have been restored in the constitution but the realities on ground have been different. Unfortunately, in India secularism is more of a subject of politics than of metaphysics or even values. This is one of the major reasons of eruptions of such rioting endangering communal harmony. z THE INDIAN ARMY GENUINELY BELIEVES IN TWO ETERNAL TRUTHS z THE ONENESS OF GOD AND VICTORY IN OPERATIONS z BOTH ARE SO INTER- RELATED AND HAVE BEEN DEEPLY ROOTED THAT WE FAIL TO SEE ANYTHING BEYOND ETERNAL TRUTH

SCallowsOBCquotainMPlocalbodypolls World Meteorological Organization says extreme weather wreaked heavy toll on human lives FOUR CRITICAL CLIMATE INDICATORS BROKE RECORDS IN 2021: UN REPORT Geneva (Agencies): Four critical global in- dicators of the climate crisis broke records in 2021, according to a UN report, from rising oceans to the levels of heat-trapping emis- sions in the atmos- phere. Greenhouse gas con- centrations, sea-level rise, ocean heat, and ocean acidification, set four new climate change records in 2021, the World Meteorologi- cal Organization (WMO) said Wednes- day . The UN World Mete- orological Organiza- tion (WMO) said these were clear signs of hu- manity’s impact on the planet, which was bringing long-lasting effects. Extreme weather, which the WMO called the day-to- day face of the climate emergency, wreaked a heavy toll on human lives and led to hun- dreds of billions of dollars in damages, the agency said. Droughts and floods triggered food price rises that have been ex- acerbated in 2022. The WMO’s State of the Global Climate in 2021 report also found the past seven years have been the hottest record- ed. “Today’s State of the Climate report is a dismal litany of hu- manity’s failure to tack- le climate disruption. Fossil fuels are a dead end – environmentally and economically,” said António Guterres, the secretary general of the UN. “The only sus- tainable future is a re- newable one. The good news is that the lifeline is right in front of us. Wind and solar are readily available and, in most cases, cheaper than coal and other fos- sil fuels. If we act to- gether, the renewable energy transformation can be the peace project of the 21st century .” Prof Petteri Taalas, the WMO secretary gen- eral, said: “Our climate is changing before our eyes. Human-induced greenhouse gases will warm the planet for many generations to come. Some glaciers have reached the point of no return and this will have long-term re- percussions in a world in which more than 2 billion people already experiencewaterstress. “Extreme weather has the most immedi- ate impact on our daily lives,” he said. “We are seeing a drought emer- gency unfolding in the Horn of Africa, recent deadly flooding in South Africa and the extreme heat in India and Pakistan. Early warning systems are critically required [to save lives] yet these are only available in less than half of WMO’s 187 member nations.” The world’s oceans absorb more than 90% of the heat trapped by greenhouse gases and 2021 set a record. The increasing warmth in the ocean, which is ir- reversible over time- scales of centuries to millennia, has been es- pecially strong in the last 20 years. Much of the ocean experienced at least one strong ma- rine heatwave in 2021, the WMO said. The global sea level also reached a new re- cord high in 2021. It has increased by 10cm since 1993 and the rise is ac- celerating, driven by the melting of ice sheets and glaciers and the thermal expansion of the ocean. The rise im- perils hundreds of mil- lions of coastal dwell- ers, the WMO said, and increases the damage caused by hurricanes and cyclones. POLLUTION CLAIMED 9 MN LIVES GLOBALLY IN 2019, INDIA TOPS THE LIST: LANCET New Delhi: Pollution was responsible for nine million deaths in 2019 — equivalent to one in six deaths worldwide — and India leads with nearly 2.4 million deaths, accord- ing to a study published on Wednesday in The Lancet Planetary Health. JPC/004/2022-24 Rajendra Chhabra Jaipur: The situation in PHED refuses to be- come better and even today not everything is well in the department. In fact, word is that there is a ‘tussle’ be- tween minister Dr Ma- hesh Joshi and ACS Subodh Agarwal. Eve- ryone in the depart- ment knows Additional Chief Engineer of the department - Arun Sriv- astava - is one of trusted official of the minister and the official has complete ‘power’ in the department. However, an incident on Tuesday shocked every- one. In a major meeting, ACS Subodh Agarwal not only scolded Srivas- tava, but even went on to say, “You have been perched in Jaipur for too long, now we will have to send you out of here.” The ACS had called the meeting with Collectors and senior officials of PHED over drinking water supply. When Jhunjhunu Col- lector raised com- plaints, one after the other, over water sup- ply, it showed Srivasta- va’s irresponsible acts, which did not go down well with hard taskmas- ter Agarwal. Without caring about Srivastava being minister’s favour- ite, he took a class of the officer in the meet- ing. Officials in the de- partment claim that the water supply situation in Srivastava’s area of Dausa and Sikar is also worse, a fact that has come in notice of ACS. Such is the situation between Srivastava and minister Joshi that even after four months of a charge sheet has been given against Sriv- astava regarding scam worth crores of rupees in the water testing lab case, Joshi has not tak- en any action till now. Former Principal secre- tary Rajesh Yadav had caught this scam and he prepared chargesheet. Actually, clashes be- tween minister, secre- tary and engineers has become a constant in PHED. In the begin- ning, the relation be- tween BD Kalla and Sandeep Verma had soured to such an ex- tent that minister gave him 7 marks in ACR which was followed by clashes between Kalla Rajesh Yadav. This was followed by tussle be- tween Joshi ACS Pant. But now a new tussle has erupted between minister Joshi and Sub- odh Agarwal. Sources reveal that Arun Srivas- tava is looking to be- come Director of WSSO aswellasACEof Jaipur city, which is possible with minister’s ‘aa- shirwad’. But now it remains to be seen if after Tuesday’s inci- dent, Srivastava can stay in Jaipur or not.
