AFTER ‘PATHAAN’ RELEASE...
First priority will be Marathi films: MNS leader tells multiplex owners
Mumbai (ANI): Ma-
harashtra Navnirman
Sena leader Ameya
Khopkar on Wednes-
day warned multiplex
owners against setting
aside the screening of
the Marathi films due
to the release of Shah
Rukh Khan’s
‘Pathaan’, and said
that the first priority
in the state would be
films made in the Mar-
athi language.
The MNS leader,
however, clarified that
the party is not pro-
testing against the
film. The remark
comes in the wake of
protests in parts of the
country against the
film’s release.
Khopkar said that
‘Pathaan’ should be
screened in the state,
however, the Marathi
films which are due
for release or have
been making a good
run at the box office
should also be shown.
“Hindi film
‘Pathaan is releasing
across the nation to-
day
. We do not object to
it. Shah Rukh Khan is
making a comeback in
this film, it should
also be screened. But
that does not mean
that the multiplex
owners should not
screen Marathi films,”
hesaid,adding,“Leave
alone theatres, ticket
counters are also not
being opened for Mar-
athi cinema.”
The MNS leader
warned of violent pro-
tests if multiplex own-
ers did not screen
Marathi films.
“The first priority
in Maharashtra
should be Marathi
films and then films
made in other lan-
guages. If a Marathi
film does not get a
place in theatres, then
the glasses of those
theatres are more ex-
pensive, if they break,
then it is
not our responsibili-
ty,” he said, adding
“You can file a case
against us or put us in
jail; we are ready. But
every time a Marathi
film (is slated for re-
lease), we have to agi-
tate so that it gets a
place in the theatre.”

BMC elections: Ashish Shelar
Mumbai BJP chief buoyant on BJP-Shinde combine’s chances in overdue civic polls
First India Bureau
Mumbai: The ruling al-
liance between the
Bharatiya Janata Party
and the Balasahebanchi
Shiv Sena will win more
than 150 seats in the up-
coming elections to the
Brihanmumbai Munici-
pal Corporation, Mum-
bai BJP president Ash-
ish Shelar said on
Wednesday
, echoing Un-
ion minister Amit
Shah’s “Mission 150
seats” message.
The Brihanmumbai
Municipal Corporation
has 227 seats in the
House. It is currently
under an administra-
tor as the five-year
term of its elected rep-
resentatives ended in
March last year.
BJP and the Shiv
Sena faction led by
Chief Minister Eknath
Shinde will win more
than 150 seats in the up-
coming BMC elections,
Shelar said, adding that
the next Mumbai mayor
will be from the BJP.
“The BJP along with
our alliance partner
CM Eknath Shinde will
win more than 150 seats.
The mayor of the new
civic body will be from
the BJP,” said Shelar.
Notably, Shiv Sena
has controlled the
BMC, arguably Asia’s
richest civic body with
an annual budget of
about Rs40-45,000 crore,
since 1997. However,
the BJP closed the mar-
gin in the last election,
held in 2017, claiming
82 seats, just two shy of
the Sena’s 84.
After returning to
power in Maharashtra
with an alliance with
Shinde, whose revolt
split the Shiv Sena and
led to the collapse of
the Uddhav Thackeray-
led MVA government
last year, the BJP is
keen to wrest the con-
trol of the BMC from
the Sena.
Shelar said, “There is
a difference between
the Shiv Sena led by late
Balasaheb Thackeray
and the current one un-
der Uddhav Thackeray.
Balasaheb was a large-
hearted person, always
open for dialogue and
the foundation of his al-
liance (with BJP) was
Hindutva.”
Asked about Prime
Minister Narendra
Modi’s role in the BMC
elections, Shelar said,
“He will naturally re-
main the face of our
campaign, like Deputy
Chief Minister Deven-
dra Fadnavis.”
Last week, the party
got PM Modi to lay the
foundation stones and
inaugurate a string of
projects worth Rs38,000
crore aimed at develop-
ing infrastructure, eas-
ing urban travel, and
strengthening health-
care in the country’s
financial capital.

heb Thackeray leader
Aaditya Thackeray
asked if Shinde took
“his friends along” on
his recent visit to Davos
to attend the World Eco-
nomic Forum, which
cost the state exchequer
Rs30-40 crore.
“His trip was meant
to be from January 16 to
20, but the CM reached
Davos late and came
back early
. He had
booked a chartered
flight, but what is the
use of it when it reached
late? He wasted the
whole day of January
16. If you consider a
daily expenditure of
Rs10 crore... Did he take
his friends with him? If
yes, who paid for them?”
the former minister
asked, while speaking to
the media. Notably
, CM
Shinde returned from
Davos late on January
18 so as to attend Prime
Minister Narendra
Modi’s events in Mum-
bai on Januaray 19.
Pointing out that the
government had not
announced any agree-
ments or MoUs follow-
ing the CM’s visit,
Thackeray said,
“Whatever MoUs were
signed at Davos, most
of those firms are
based here. Why take
them to Davos and sign
contracts which were
already finalized?”

According to tehsil-
dar Mahesh
Parandekar, who is the
complainant in the
case, an order was is-
sued to distribute funds
under the government's
Jalyukt Shivar Abhi-
yan, a water conserva-
tion project, a police
official said.
Accordingly
, two de-
mand drafts were given
towaterconservationof-
ficers to disburse the
amounts of Rs12,27,297
and Rs41,06,610 through
RTGS (Real Time Gross
Settlement).
When relevant docu-
ments were submitted
to the bank, it was
found that the balance
in the account was
only Rs96,559, police
inspector Sanjivan
Mirkale said. An audit
was then conducted
through which an al-
leged embezzlement of
Rs22.87 crore came to
light, he said. Based on
a complaint by the
tehsildar, the police on
Sunday arrested the
accused, the official
said, adding that a case
has been registered.

First India Bureau
Thane: A special
court here has ac-
quitted seven per-
sons who had been
charged with attempt
to murder under the
Maharashtra Control
of Organized Crime
Act (MCOCA), ob-
serving that the pros-
ecution had failed to
prove the charges
and that the accused.
The witnesses ap-
peared to have had
some sort of settle-
ment outside the
court, special (MCO-
CA) Judge Amit M
Shete observed in his
order passed on Jan-
uary 18, a copy of
which was made
available on Tuesday.
According to court
documents, the ac-
cused had attacked
the complaint with
swords over past en-
mity at Kashimira in
the district back in
February 2016.
The alleged attack-
ers, including five in
their 20s, were booked
under the Indian Pe-
nal Code (IPC), the
Arms Act and the
stringent MCOCA.
In his order, Special
Judge Shete held that
the prosecution had
failed to prove the
charges against the
alleged accused “who
need to be acquitted”
of all charges.
“The prosecution
witnesses failed to
establish any offence
against the accused
persons. The evi-
dence which is ad-
mitted by the accused
as well as produced
by the prosecution is
not reliable and not
that much trustwor-
thy so as to say that
the prosecution suc-
ceeded to prove any
charge,” the judge
said in his order.
Action against the witnesses was
required, however, considering
the nature of offence as well as
the relationship between them, that is
not worth or advisable.

AMCs to use BMC funds for emergency civil works
BUDGET WOES
First India Bureau
Mumbai: The Brihan-
mumbai Municipal
Corporation is standing
firm in its decision to
not provide develop-
ment funds to council-
lors or wards in the
civic budget for 2023-24,
given that BMC terms
ended on March 08,
2022. However, the civic
body will give funds to
the Assistant Munici-
pal Commissioners of
various wards, to be
used for emergency civ-
il work, an official said.
Under BMC rules,
each councillor is allo-
cated `60 lakh to be used
for development works
at their discretion.
However, this fund was
not allocated last finan-
cial year, since the
councillors’ term had
ended. This year too,
there will be no provi-
sion for electorate ward
funds in the budget for
2023-24, which BMC ad-
ministrator Iqbal Singh
Chahal will present—
and pass—on Feb 02.
Notably
, the BMC, the
country’s richest civic
body
, has an average an-
nualbudgetof `40,000cr.
“There was no provi-
sion for councillors’
funds in this year’s
budget. But ward offices
recommendedemergen-
cy civil work. Later the
BMC undertook beauti-
fication projects and
public toilet repair
work as special projects
in every ward,” a BMC
official said. The admin-
istration had provided
`750 crore for the beau-
tification project and
Rs240 crore for public
toilet repairs in every
administration ward.
“The Assistant Com-
missioner has the au-
thority to use the fund
that will be provided
now. This year also, I
will suggest some works
in the ward. But I am
not sure how many of
them will get funds.
Also with this Rs60
lakh, councillors get
more than `1 crore ex-
tra fund every year. But
even this fund was not
provided,” former Op-
position leader Ravi
Raja told the media.
“Apart from beautifi-
cation and toilet re-
pairs, there is other
work also that needs to
be done in wards, espe-
cially in slum pockets
like repairs of foot-
paths, installation of
lights, and distribution
of bins. But these works
are being delayed,” one
councillor said, asking
not to be named.

This year, Central Vista Avenue
will host the 74th Republic Day
festivities. According to de-

time by Indian guns rather than

tive, 105 mm Indian field guns
will replace the vintage artil-
lery with 25-pounder guns that
typically fires the thunderous
ceremonial 21-Gun Salute dur-
ing the Republic Day celebra-

see the debut of formations like
“Bheem” and “Vajrang.”

will replace the vintage artillery of 25-powder guns.
VETERANS’ TABLEAU
Another highlight of the parade this year will be

contributions in the last 75 years and their initiatives
in shaping India’s future during ‘Amrit Kaal’.

dressing ATC’s loss in
the country which has
resulted in an overall
reduction of ATC loss-
es by 5 percent in the

the initiatives taken to
meet such reduction.
These States include
Andhra Pradesh, Hary-

ADDRESSING INEFFICIENCIES
New Delhi (ANI):
Speaking about the con-
troversial BBC docu-
mentary on Prime Min-
ister Narendra Modi
and the Gujarat riots in
2002, Congress Thiru-
vananthapuram MP
Shashi Tharoor said
that the argument that
it would affect India’s
sovereignty was not
convincing. He added
that India’s national se-
curity and sovereignty
weren’t fragile.
Talking about the
BBC documentary,
Shashi Tharoor said, “I
am glad that the govern-
ment has said it won’t
interfere with freedom
of expression. The
youth organisation in
Kerala organised the
screening as a protest
against censorship,
which I was also in fa-
vour of.”
He further added,
“The argument that it
will affect India’s sover-
eignty is not convinc-
ing. It’s not that fragile.
Our national security
and sovereignty are not
something that can be
affected so easily by a
documentary
. We are a
strong country
. The ar-
gument that the issue
has been laid to rest in a
legal sense is accurate.
The argument that peo-
ple continue to have
their own misgivings
and reservations is also
accurate.”
“In our democracy
, all
issues can be discussed.
If the govt had asked for
my advice, I would have
told them to ignore it
and that it be passed,”
he added.
Further, speaking out
about Anil Antony re-
signing from Congress,
Tharoor said that he
hadn’t spoken to Anil. “I
think he can speak for
himself,” said the Con-
gress MP
.
Veteran Congress
leader and former min-
ister AK Antony’s son,
Anil, on Wednesday, re-
signed from all his posts
in the party following
“intolerant calls” and

Pompeo says Sushma

Washington (PTI):
Former US Secretary
of State Mike Pompeo
has said he never saw
his counterpart Sush-
ma Swaraj as an “im-
portant political play-
er” but got along fa-
mously with External
Affairs Minister S
Jaishankar, hitting it
off with him in their
first meeting itself.
In his latest book
‘Never Give an Inch:

ica I Love’ that hit the
stores on Tuesday,
Pompeo describes
Swaraj somewhat dis-
paragingly, using the
American slang words
“goofball” and “heart-

for her.
Swaraj served as ex-
ternal affairs minister
in the first Modi gov-
ernment from May
2014 to May 2019. She
died in August 2019.
“On the Indian side,
my original counter-
part was not an impor-
tant player on the In-
dian foreign policy
team. Instead, I
worked much more
closely with National
Security Advisor Ajit
Doval, a close and
trusted confidant of
PM Modi,” 59-year-old
Pompeo writes in his
book. “My second In-
dian counterpart was

hankar. In May 2019,
we welcomed “J” as
India’s new foreign
minister. I could not
have asked for a better
counterpart. English
is one of the seven lan-
guages he speaks, and
his is somewhat better
than mine,” writes the
former top American
diplomat.

Tuesday amid reports of

New Delhi: The Edi-

written to Electronics

wini Vaishnaw, urg-
ing him to expunge
the amendments to IT
Rules that seek to direct
social media platforms
to take down news or

as fake by the PIB's
Fact Checking Unit.
In a letter sent to
Vaishnaw, the Guild
asked the ministry to
initiate consultations
with press bodies, me-
dia organisations and
other stakeholders on
the regulatory frame-
work for digital media,
so as not to undermine
press freedom.
The Guild said it was
deeply concerned by
the proposed amend-
ment giving sweeping
powers to the Press In-
formationBureau(PIB).
This new procedure
basically serves to
make it easier to muzzle
the free press, and will
give sweeping powers to
the PIB, or any 'other
agency authorised by
the Central government
for fact checking', to
force online intermedi-
aries to take down con-
tent that the govern-
ment may find problem-
atic, it said.
The Guild noted that
the role of the PIB was
limited to disseminat-
ing information to news
organisations on affairs
of the government.
By this proposed
amendment, sweeping
regulatory powers are
sought to be given to
this agency
, which is pa-
tently illegal and un-
constitutional, it said
in the letter.
The Guild reiterated
that regardless of the
absence of procedures,
the amendment was in
itself an illegal move as
the PIB has no constitu-
tional authority to be a
regulator of the press
in any capacity

SAYS UK TRADE MINISTER
High-quality FTA with India a priority
London (PTI): Britain's
trade minister in charge of
negotiating a FTA with In-
dia says clinching a high-
quality deal is among her
top priorities for the year,
while admitting the talks

In a speech addressing
business leaders at Lancas-

after the Diwali 2022 dead-

October amid political tur-
moil in Britain.
Some of you will know I

fore I became a politician.
That means I'm a problem
solver at heart,” said Bad-
enoch. So when our Indian
trade talks hit a bit of an
impasse, I didn't pick up the
phone, I got on a plane. That
deal's not done yet, but it's
back on track,” she said.
Badenoch was in New
Delhi in early December to
hold talks with her coun-
terpart, Commerce and In-
dustry Minister Piyush
Goyal, and kick off the
sixth round of FTA talks.
The seventh round is ex-
pected in the UK in the
coming weeks, with both
sides reluctant to set a new
deadline for completing the
negotiations.
We will seal high-quali-
ty deals with India and
CPTPP [Comprehensive

ment for Trans-Pacific
Partnership] – they have a
combined population of
nearly 2 billion consumers
– opening exciting opportu-
nities in fast-growing mar-

Badenoch said.
But I want to be clear
that just signing on the dot-
ted line is not the objective.
These deals will only be
agreed if they are the right
deals for the people of this
country. Bringing in jobs
and investment to left-be-
hind communities and
capitalising on those areas
in which we specialise,”
she added.

Rising cost of data a

New Delhi (PTI): Rising
prices of data and devices
are a concern for the rapid
proliferation of digitisa-

Wednesday
.
The comments have
come against the backdrop
of a recent hike of about
57% in the minimum
monthly recharge plan by
the country's second-larg-
est telco Bharti Airtel.
Rise in cost of data or
cost of devices are of con-

said.
The minister said that he
is not exactly aware of the
hike in mobile services
rates by Airtel and the min-
istry may approach tele-
com regulator Trai to ex-
amine if the hike is going
to have a short-term or
long-term impact.
He said that there has
been an impact on prices
across the world due to the

the impact of data price
need to be examined.

The RBI has already

Chaodhary said the
CBDC (Central Bank

It is non-remunera-
tive that is it does not
carry any interest like
any currency, noted
Choudhary
, adding, “E-

Asserting that digi-

in the deficit, and bringing
the economy back on track,
experts said on Wednesday
.
Stock markets have been
subdued in the run-up to
the Union Budget with
BSE’s benchmark Sensex
is almost flat so far this
month. Even the corporate
earning season failed to ex-
cite the markets, while
some indices like IT and
bankex have seen some
positive movements.
The muted performance
of the markets could be due
to FPIs moving funds out
of India as they are looking
for emerging markets with
cheaper valuations. They
have taken out over `16,500
crore from domestic equi-
ties so far this month.
Narendra Solanki, Head-

.
This campaign will
be launched after the

veiled a “charge sheet”
against the Bharatiya
Janata Party (BJP) and
the Prime Minister Nar-

Last week, senior

country to spread Rahul
Gandhi’s message
among the masses.
Maken said, “The

increasing gap between
the poor and the rich.
Our ‘charge sheet’ will
be distributed to every
household along with
the copy of Rahul Gan-
dhi’s letter addressing
fellow Indians.”
This charge sheet
will be in Hindi, Eng-

, the
Congress general secre-

At present, there are
48 crore unemployed
people in the country
, he
added.
“The gap between the

him for allegedly pro-

The inquiry failed to
reveal anything that

Nagpur Police Commis-

said.
Shyam Manav, found-

lodged the complaint on
January 08, stating that
Dhirendra Krishna
Shastriconducted‘Shree

Nagpur from January
05-13, during which he
held ‘Divya Darbar’ and
‘Pret Darbar’ pro-

superstition.
In his complaint, Ma-
nav demanded action
under the Maharashtra

tion of Human Sacrifice

and Black Magic Act,
2013 and the Drugs and
Magic Remedies (Objec-

On January 09, Ma-
nav had challenging
the godman to prove
his ‘Divya Shakti’ (di-
vine power) and win a
Rs30 lakh cash reward.
Shastri is the head
priest of Bageshwar

that the programme in

In the video, Bagesh-

Palghar: Police have
arrested a 36-year-old

.
The man was found
dead in his home at Kon-

of Wada taluka around
10 pm on January 20,
said Sachin Navadkar,
the public relations of-

(murder) after a post-

had been strangled to
death, and also had in-

A team from Wada

on certain leads and in-
telligence inputs to
zero in on five suspects,
including the de-

far, the investigation
indicates that the man
was having an extra-

Pune (PTI): Dr Ra-
man Gangakhedkar,
former head of epide-
miology and commu-
nicable diseases at the
Indian Council of
Medical Research,
has discounted the
need for the fourth
dose of COVID-19 vac-
cine given the current
evidence about the
novel coronavirus
and its variants.
If a person has tak-
en a third dose of the
anti-COVID-19 vac-
cine, it means his T-
cell immune response
has been trained
thrice, Dr Gan-
gakhedkar said on
the sidelines of a
function here.
“The core virus (of
COVID-19) has not
been changed so
much that a new vac-
cine would be needed,
so try and have trust
in our T-cell immune
response,” he said.
“Looking at the
current evidence (of
variants of the vi-
rus), it is not that big
that there is any need
for the fourth dose of
the COVID-19 vac-
cine,” he said.
“For the fourth
dose, I think, there is
still time to think, be-
cause if any new var-
iant comes, it would
not be from the SARS-
COV2 family. It could
be a completely new
variant and when it
comes, we will think
about it as our
genomic surveillance
is still going on. No
need to get worried
now,” he said.
Mumbai saw one new case and zero deaths on Wednesday.

On January 26, 1950, the Preamble to the Constitution of India
-- a statement presenting the key principles of the Constitution
-- came into effect. This completed the country’s transition to
a sovereign republic. The Constitution establishes fundamental
rights that should be enjoyed by all citizens of this country,
regardless of their political beliefs. It also establishes some
fundamental duties for all citizens of the country to abide by.
Today, 26th January 2023, as we observe our
74th Republic Day, we should celebrate it from the
heart! Today is not just a holiday, it is a day to immerse
yourself in the tricolours of patriotism. City First wishes

Guv, not Fadnavis, should clarify: NCP on letter row AFTER ‘PATHAAN’ RELEASE... First priority will be Marathi films: MNS leader tells multiplex owners Mumbai (ANI): Ma- harashtra Navnirman Sena leader Ameya Khopkar on Wednes- day warned multiplex owners against setting aside the screening of the Marathi films due to the release of Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Pathaan’, and said that the first priority in the state would be films made in the Mar- athi language. The MNS leader, however, clarified that the party is not pro- testing against the film. The remark comes in the wake of protests in parts of the country against the film’s release. Khopkar said that ‘Pathaan’ should be screened in the state, however, the Marathi films which are due for release or have been making a good run at the box office should also be shown. “Hindi film ‘Pathaan is releasing across the nation to- day . We do not object to it. Shah Rukh Khan is making a comeback in this film, it should also be screened. But that does not mean that the multiplex owners should not screen Marathi films,” hesaid, adding,“Leave alone theatres, ticket counters are also not being opened for Mar- athi cinema.” The MNS leader warned of violent pro- tests if multiplex own- ers did not screen Marathi films. “The first priority in Maharashtra should be Marathi films and then films made in other lan- guages. If a Marathi film does not get a place in theatres, then the glasses of those theatres are more ex- pensive, if they break, then it is not our responsibili- ty,” he said, adding “You can file a case against us or put us in jail; we are ready. Willwinmorethan150seatsin BMC elections: Ashish Shelar Mumbai BJP chief buoyant on BJP-Shinde combine’s chances in overdue civic polls First India Bureau Mumbai: The ruling al- liance between the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Balasahebanchi Shiv Sena will win more than 150 seats in the up- coming elections to the Brihanmumbai Munici- pal Corporation, Mum- bai BJP president Ash- ish Shelar said on Wednesday , echoing Un- ion minister Amit Shah’s “Mission 150 seats” message. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has 227 seats in the House. It is currently under an administra- tor as the five-year term of its elected rep- resentatives ended in March last year. BJP and the Shiv Sena faction led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde will win more than 150 seats in the up- coming BMC elections, Shelar said, adding that the next Mumbai mayor will be from the BJP. “The BJP along with our alliance partner CM Eknath Shinde will win more than 150 seats. The mayor of the new civic body will be from the BJP,” said Shelar. Notably, Shiv Sena has controlled the BMC, arguably Asia’s richest civic body with an annual budget of about Rs40-45,000 crore, since 1997. However, the BJP closed the mar- gin in the last election, held in 2017, claiming 82 seats, just two shy of the Sena’s 84. After returning to power in Maharashtra with an alliance with Shinde, whose revolt split the Shiv Sena and led to the collapse of the Uddhav Thackeray- led MVA government last year, the BJP is keen to wrest the con- trol of the BMC from the Sena. Shelar said, “There is a difference between the Shiv Sena led by late Balasaheb Thackeray and the current one un- der Uddhav Thackeray. Balasaheb was a large- hearted person, always open for dialogue and the foundation of his al- liance (with BJP) was Hindutva.” Asked about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s role in the BMC elections, Shelar said, “He will naturally re- main the face of our campaign, like Deputy Chief Minister Deven- dra Fadnavis.” Last week, the party got PM Modi to lay the foundation stones and inaugurate a string of projects worth Rs38,000 crore aimed at develop- ing infrastructure, eas- ing urban travel, and strengthening health- care in the country’s financial capital. He had booked a chartered flight, but what is the use of it when it reached late? He wasted the whole day of January 16. If you consider a daily expenditure of Rs10 crore... Did he take his friends with him? If yes, who paid for them?” the former minister asked, while speaking to the media. Notably , CM Shinde returned from Davos late on January 18 so as to attend Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s events in Mum- bai on Januaray 19. Pointing out that the government had not announced any agree- ments or MoUs follow- ing the CM’s visit, Thackeray said, “Whatever MoUs were signed at Davos, most of those firms are based here. However, this fund was not allocated last finan- cial year, since the councillors’ term had ended. This year too, there will be no provi- sion for electorate ward funds in the budget for 2023-24, which BMC ad- ministrator Iqbal Singh Chahal will present— and pass—on Feb 02. The admin- istration had provided `750 crore for the beau- tification project and Rs240 crore for public toilet repairs in every administration ward. “The Assistant Com- missioner has the au- thority to use the fund that will be provided now. This year also, I will suggest some works in the ward. But I am not sure how many of them will get funds. Also with this Rs60 lakh, councillors get more than `1 crore ex- tra fund every year. But even this fund was not provided,” former Op- position leader Ravi Raja told the media. “Apart from beautifi- cation and toilet re- pairs, there is other work also that needs to be done in wards, espe- cially in slum pockets like repairs of foot- paths, installation of lights, and distribution of bins. Talking about the BBC documentary, Shashi Tharoor said, “I am glad that the govern- ment has said it won’t interfere with freedom of expression. The youth organisation in Kerala organised the screening as a protest against censorship, which I was also in fa- vour of.” He further added, “The argument that it will affect India’s sover- eignty is not convinc- ing. It’s not that fragile. Our national security and sovereignty are not something that can be affected so easily by a documentary . We are a strong country . The ar- gument that the issue has been laid to rest in a legal sense is accurate. The argument that peo- ple continue to have their own misgivings and reservations is also accurate.” “In our democracy , all issues can be discussed. If the govt had asked for my advice, I would have told them to ignore it and that it be passed,” he added. Further, speaking out about Anil Antony re- signing from Congress, Tharoor said that he hadn’t spoken to Anil. “I think he can speak for himself,” said the Con- gress MP . Swaraj served as ex- ternal affairs minister in the first Modi gov- ernment from May 2014 to May 2019. She died in August 2019. “On the Indian side, my original counter- part was not an impor- tant player on the In- dian foreign policy team. In a letter sent to Vaishnaw, the Guild asked the ministry to initiate consultations with press bodies, me- dia organisations and other stakeholders on the regulatory frame- work for digital media, so as not to undermine press freedom. The Guild said it was deeply concerned by the proposed amend- ment giving sweeping powers to the Press In- formationBureau(PIB). This new procedure basically serves to make it easier to muzzle the free press, and will give sweeping powers to the PIB, or any 'other agency authorised by the Central government for fact checking', to force online intermedi- aries to take down con- tent that the govern- ment may find problem- atic, it said. The Guild noted that the role of the PIB was limited to disseminat- ing information to news organisations on affairs of the government. By this proposed amendment, sweeping regulatory powers are sought to be given to this agency , which is pa- tently illegal and un- constitutional, it said in the letter. The Guild reiterated that regardless of the absence of procedures, the amendment was in itself an illegal move as the PIB has no constitu- tional authority to be a regulator of the press in any capacity . It is non-remunera- tive that is it does not carry any interest like any currency, noted Choudhary , adding, “E- rupee is also expected to offer features of physical cash like safe- ty and settlement of transactions.” Asserting that digi- tal currency is aimed to compliment rather than replace current forms of money, he said, “it should not be construed as a step to replace any of the ex- isting bouquet of pay- mentwhicharealready available with us.” Stock market investors expect balanced budget New Delhi (PTI): Stock market investors are ex- pecting a balanced Budget with a focus on job crea- tion, increased spending on infrastructure, reigning in the deficit, and bringing the economy back on track, experts said on Wednesday . Stock markets have been subdued in the run-up to the Union Budget with BSE’s benchmark Sensex is almost flat so far this month. Even the corporate earning season failed to ex- cite the markets, while some indices like IT and bankex have seen some positive movements. The muted performance of the markets could be due to FPIs moving funds out of India as they are looking for emerging markets with cheaper valuations. They have taken out over `16,500 crore from domestic equi- ties so far this month. Narendra Solanki, Head- Equity Research Anand Rathi Shares Stock Bro- kers, said that investors are expected to remain focused on three key factors from the pre-election year Budg- et 2023, firstly equity inves- tors are expecting a uni- form tax structure for capi- tal gains which might help taxpayers to have more disposable income. The inquiry failed to reveal anything that could attract action un- der the Black Magic Act, Nagpur Police Commis- sioner Amitesh Kumar said. Shyam Manav, found- er of ‘ Akhil Bharatiya Andhashraddha Nir- moolan Samiti’, had lodged the complaint on January 08, stating that Dhirendra Krishna Shastriconducted‘Shree Ram Katha’ event in Nagpur from January 05-13, during which he held ‘Divya Darbar’ and ‘Pret Darbar’ pro- grammes that promoted superstition. In his complaint, Ma- nav demanded action under the Maharashtra Prevention and Eradica- tion of Human Sacrifice andotherInhuman,Evil and Aghori Practices and Black Magic Act, 2013 and the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objec- tionable Advertise- ments) Act, 1954. On January 09, Ma- nav had challenging the godman to prove his ‘Divya Shakti’ (di- vine power) and win a Rs30 lakh cash reward. Shastri is the head priest of Bageshwar Dham in MP’s Chhatar- pur district. “Police conducted an inquiry based on the complaint lodged against Bageshwar Ma- haraj by Manav and a video submitted by him as evidence, but found that the programme in questiondoesnotattract action under any these laws,” CP Kumar said. If a person has tak- en a third dose of the anti-COVID-19 vac- cine, it means his T- cell immune response has been trained thrice, Dr Gan- gakhedkar said on the sidelines of a function here. “The core virus (of COVID-19) has not been changed so much that a new vac- cine would be needed, so try and have trust in our T-cell immune response,” he said. “Looking at the current evidence (of variants of the vi- rus), it is not that big that there is any need for the fourth dose of the COVID-19 vac- cine,” he said. “For the fourth dose, I think, there is still time to think, be- cause if any new var- iant comes, it would not be from the SARS- COV2 family. It could be a completely new variant and when it comes, we will think about it as our genomic surveillance is still going on. No need to get worried now,” he said.
