Tiger Hill’, tells the in-
spiring story of Sube-
dar Major (Honorary
Captain) Yogendra Sin-
gh Yadav, the youngest
Param Vir Chakra
awardee -- India’s high-
est gallantry award -- at
the age of 19 for his ac-
tions in Kargil conflict.
The autobiography,
published by Srishti
Publishers, is the true
story of a brave soldier
who left no stone un-
turned and fought val-
iantly for the honour of
India. “The idea of writ-
ing the book came to my
mind over the last many
years when I was invit-
ed to some of the top col-
leges of India like IIT-
Delhi, IIT-Kanpur, IIM-
Ahmedabad and IIM-
Indore... I noticed that
my simple but honest
answers made a lot of
impact and would go on
to motivate these young
students,” Subedar Ma-
jor (Honorary Captain)
Yadav said. “I decided
then to write a book
capturing my journey.
My motive for writing
the book is to motivate
youngsters of India and
inculcate a sense of pat-
riotism,” he added.
On the night of July
3, 1999, Grenadier Yo-
gendra Singh Yadav, all
of 19 years old, was
given a crucial task
along with the Ghatak
Platoon of 18 Grena-
diers Regiment -- to cap-
ture the Tiger Hill.
He displayed the most
conspicuous courage
under extreme adverse
circumstances.

Court has observed,
while noting that an
‘’atypical” manifesta-
tion of a family unit is
as real as its traditional
counterpart and de-
serves protection under
the law.
The predominant un-
derstanding of the con-
cept of a “family” both
in the law and in society
is that ‘’it consists of a
single, unchanging unit
with a mother and a fa-
ther (who remain con-
stant over time) and
their children.

may lead to a change in

ture, and the fact that

significant as activists

ty firm Supertech Ltd
said it has incurred a
loss of about Rs 500
crore, including con-
struction and interest
costs, because of the
demolition of its twin
towers, the company’s
Chairman R K Arora
said on Sunday
.
The cost of the demo-
lition itself is estimated
at about Rs 20 crore.
“Our overall loss is
around Rs 500 crore, tak-
ing into account the
amountwehavespenton
land and construction
cost, the charges paid to
authorities for various
approvals, interest paid
to banks over the years
and the 12 per cent inter-
estpaidbacktobuyersof
these two towers, among
other costs,” Arora said.
“Weconstructedthese
towersaspertheplanap-
proved by the Noida de-

added. Asked about the
demolition cost, Arora
said Supertech is paying
Rs 17.5 crore to Edifice
Engineering, which was
tasked with safely pull-
ing down the structures,
including the premium

dreds gathered near a
ground in Noida to wit-
ness the once-in-a-life-
time spectacle of demo-
lition of the 100-metres-
tall Supertech twin tow-
ers, and cheered and
clapped as the sky-
scrapers came down.
Ahead of the demoli-
tion, authorities had
created an ‘exclusion
zone’ in a radius of up
to 500 metres around
the twin towers where
no human or animal
was allowed except for
the team of Indian and
foreign blasters en-
gaged in the demoli-
tion. There was heavy
police deployment in
the area to stop people
from entering the bar-
ricaded area. People
from Noida and neigh-
bouring Delhi gathered
near the Jaypee flyover
ground to witness the
marvel of modern-day
engineering. Many
came hours before the
2:30 pm implosion to
find a spot that would
ensure a good view. “It
felt like structures of
corruption were com-
ing down,” remarked
Purshotam Mishra (42)
as the Supertech twin
towers disappeared
into plumes of smoke
and dust. “It was in-
credible. We waited 2
hours to witness this. It
sends out a strong mes-
sage to strong people,”
Mishra said. “The tow-
ers fell like a stack of
matchboxes.
Ashish Suman, who
came from Delhi’s Ut-
tam Nagar to witness
the demolition, said, “It
was worth it.”

exploded with hilari-
ous memes and dark
humour. While some
users tweeted that the
“Tower of Corrup-
tion” was grounded, a
few others said the me-
dia’s ground coverage
of the unprecedented
event was “as if ISRO
is sending Gaganyaan
to moon”. Hundreds of
cameras were placed
at various vantage
points in the nearby
areas, including those
brought by crew mem-
bers of a large number
of media houses.
The giant ball of
smoke that was raised
after the demolition
left many people wit-
nessing it on the
ground and on TV sets
in awe, as the billowing
smoke filled the sky-
line and the screen.
On the ground,
many people stood at a
safe distance to “enjoy
the sight of demoli-
tion” withe balloon-
sellers and street ven-
dors, selling food stuff,
adding a layer of fes-
tivity to the environ-
ment with some even
termed it as a “Su-
pertech Sunday”.

hundred metres before the demolition zone.

from home’ jobs, police
said on Sunday

cheat job seekers for
they found them an
easy target. They used
to commit crime so as to
earn easy money to live
a lavish lifestyle, they
said. Police said they
cheated people on the

The matter came to

which would be refund-

in case of non-selection,
this amount will be re-
funded within 24 hours.
Complainant trans-
ferred Rs. 4,500 to al-
leged. Alleged conduct-
ed her telephonic inter-
view after which the
complainant was fur-
ther asked to pay Rs.
15,000 as a part of salary
account and was as-
sured that this amount
will be refunded along
with previous amount,
but this time complain-
ant did not transfer the
amount and realised
that she has been cheat-
ed, police officials said.

New Delhi: Only one-
third of schools under
the Delhi government
are teaching science
subjects to students in
classes 11 and 12, a reply
to an RTI query has re-
vealed.
The Aam Aadmi Par-
ty (AAP) that had in its
2015 Delhi Assembly
election manifesto
promised to build 500
new schools in the city
has opened just 63 new
schools between Febru-
ary 2015 and May 2022,
according to the RTI.
The Education Depart-
ment of the Delhi gov-
ernment gave the infor-
mation in response to
an application filed un-
der the Right To Infor-
mation (RTI) Act on
behalf of PTI.
The RTI sought infor-
mation on the number
of Delhi government
schoolsteachingscience
and commerce su bjects
in classes 11 and 12 as
well as the number of
new schools opened by
the govt between Febru-
ary 2015 and May 2022 in
the city
. While the infor-
mation related to 326
schools was obtained
through the RTI applica-
tion, the data of other
schools was collected
from the website of the
Directorate of Educa-
tion. A total of 838 high-
er secondary schools
have data available, out
of which only 279
schools teach science
subjects and 674 schools
offer commerce subjects
to students of classes 11
and 12. That is, about 66
per cent of the govern-
ment schools in the city
donotteachsciencesub-
jectswhileabout19pcdo
notteachcommercesub-
jects in the two classes.

have been shifted tem-
porarily to shelters run
by NGOs ahead of the
court-mandated implo-
sion of the buildings on

An NGO also request-
ed authorities to con-

or a false firing just be-
fore the twin towers are
razed in order to save
the birds in the area.

ing House of Stray Ani-
mals, Friendicoes, Soci-
ety for the Prevention of
Cruelty to Animals
(SPCA) and Happy Tails
foundation have pitched
in to accommodate the
stray dogs temporarily

ties concerned to make
two or three false firing
or dummy explosions
first so that the birds do
not get affected due to
the blasts,” Mohapatra

BJP. At a special as-
semblysessioncalled
a few days back to prove his
strength Delhi Chief Minister
Arvind Kejriwal alleged that the
BJP wants to topple his govern-
ment by buying out his AAP leg-
islators. He alleged that the BJP
had set aside Rs 800 crore to buy
his 40 MLAs, offering them Rs 20

The gap between the two tow-
ers was only 16 metres.
It took nine years for the
Residents’ Welfare Associa-
tion (RWA) to win the legal
battle against the developers
after they filed a case in the
AllahabadHighCourtin2012.
After the high court ordered
demolition of the twin towers
in 2014, the developer sought
relief from the Supreme
Court which upheld the dem-
olition order in 2021 and also
ordered for buyers’ money to
be refunded with interest.
The demolition of the tall
structures, India’s first, was
a sight to watch. Carried out
with complete technical effi-
ciency, it met all safety pa-
rameters. Even the dust
clouds that arose from the
site did not disturb the air
quality level. Nor did the im-
plosion cause much collater-
al damage.
At the root of the problem,
however, was corruption
along with the alleged com-
plicity of NOIDA officials.
Theconnivancebetweenoffic-
ers and engineers of various
development authorities has
allowed scores of illegal con-
structions to come up in state
after state. To avoid such oc-
currences in future, stricter
monitoring of the staff at de-
velopment authorities is re-
quired and as punishment to
them and the developers all
illegal constructions should
be demolished. Strict preven-
tive measures are needed as
notallbuyerscanfightsodog-
gedly to save their hard-
earned money
.

Why commodity prices are
likely to fall further?
ambridge – Big movements in
the prices of oil, minerals,
and agricultural commodi-
ties have been among the
most salient economic devel-
opments of the past couple of
years. The sharp rise in com-
modity prices for much of
this period was virtually im-
possible to miss. A barrel of
Brent crude that sold for $20
in April 2020, during the first
wave of the COVID-19 pan-
demic, fetched a peak of $122
in March 2022, just after Rus-
sia invaded Ukraine.
Oil was not the only com-
modity to experience a price
surge. The price of copper
doubled; wheat more than
doubled; and global indices of
commodity prices almost tri-
pled from April 2020 to March
2022. And these increases are
in dollar terms; prices in eu-
ros,yen,won,orothercurren-
cies rose even more.
Lesswidelynoted,however,
is that the prices of many
commodities fell this sum-
mer. The price of oil de-
creasedbyabout30%between
early June and mid-August.
The politically sensitive price
of gasoline in the United
States fell by 20% over the
same period, from $5 per gal-
lon to $4 per gallon. The over-
all index fell 12%.
Is this dip in commodity
prices just temporary? Or is it
a sign that prices have peaked
and can be expected to decline
further?
Commodity prices are
highly correlated. One reason
is direct microeconomic link-
ages. When the price of oil
rises, wheat producers’ costs
increase (because harvesting
equipment runs on diesel and
fertilizer is made from natu-
ral gas), which puts upward
pressure on grain prices.
Moreover, as the US Feder-
al Reserve and other central
banks tighten monetary poli-
cy
, real interest rates are like-
ly to rise. This will probably
pushdowncommodityprices,
and not just because high real
interest rates make a reces-
sion more likely
. The level of
realinterestratesaffectscom-
modity prices independently
of GDP, both in theory and
empirically
.
The theory of the relation-
ship between real interest
ratesandcommoditypricesis
long-established. The sim-
plest intuition behind the re-
lationship is that the interest
rate is a “cost of carrying”
inventories. An increase in
the interest rate reduces
firms’ demand for holding in-
ventories and therefore low-
ers the commodity price.
Three other mechanisms
operate, in addition to inven-
tories. First, for an exhausti-
ble resource, a rise in the in-
terest rate increases the in-
centive to extract today and
thus expand the available
supply
. Second, for “financial-
ized” commodities, an in-
crease in the interest rate en-
courages institutional inves-
tors to shift out of the com-
modities asset class and into
Treasury bills. Lastly, for a
commodity that is interna-
tionally traded, an increase in
the domestic real interest rate
causes a real appreciation of
the domestic currency
, which
works to lower the domestic-
currency price of the com-
modity
.
Econometric analyses have
demonstrated the statistical
relationship between real in-
terest rates and commodity
prices. These include simple
correlations; regressions that
control for other important
determinants, such as GDP
and inventories in a “carry
trade” model; and high-fre-
quency event studies that are
much less sensitive to the
econometric problems of the
regressions.
Two episodes illustrate
that the effect of real interest
rates on commodity prices
operates independently of
the GDP effect. Neither the
spike in dollar commodity
prices in the first half of 2008
nor the decline in 2014-15 can
be explained by fluctuations
in economic activity. They
can instead be interpreted as
the result, respectively, of
loose US monetary policy
(quantitative easing) and a
tightening of US monetary
policy with the end of QE.

New Delhi: Defence
Minister Rajnath Singh
has approved a fresh list
of 780 components and
subsystems which will
only be procured from
domestic industry after
a ban on their import
kicks in under a stag-
gered time-line of
around six years.
It is the third such
“positive indigenisa-
tion” list comprising
line replacement units,
sub-systems and compo-
nents used for various
military platforms,
equipmentandweapons,
and the aim is to mini-
mise imports by the DP-
SUs. The ministry has
set specific timelines for
import ban of the items,
spanning a period from
Dec 2023 to Dec 2028.
“Singh has approved
the third positive indi-
genisation list of 780
strategically important

line beyond which they
will only be procured

try,” it said in a state-

sources, the Central
Election Authority has
made preparations to
complete the election
process on time.
Sources said the pro-
cess seems to remain
stuck since Rahul Gan-
dhi is not willing to con-
test the election for the
post of Congress prez,
although all the efforts
to convince him are still
going on. Meanwhile,
Congress plans to em-
bark on ‘Bharat Jodo
Yatra’ from Kanyaku-
mari on Sept 7 under the
leadership of party lead-
er Rahul Gandhi and the
148-day march will cul-
minate in Kashmir.
Notification will be issued on Sept 22, while the filing of nomination would begin on Sept 24

khand Vidhan Sabha is

will speak to the Speak-

ported irregularities,”

earlier this month for al-
legedly taking money
from candidates for pro-
viding solved question
papers in the graduate-
level examination held
on December 4 and 5 last
year.
It was alleged that
Rawat, the Uttarkashi
panchayat member had
asked for a government
helicopter to transport

treatment. It has also
been alleged that his
mother was treated at

the Disaster Manage-

cost overruns and as
many as 661 projects
were delayed. “Total origi-
nal cost of implementa-
tion of the 1505 projects
was `21,21,793.23 cr and
their anticipated comple-
tion cost is likely to be
`25,92,537.79 cr, which
reflects overall overruns

balance of `1.74 lakh crore
with its expanded coverage
to 67% rural or semi-urban
areas as well as 56% of
women Jan Dhan account
holders, she said on the
eighth anniversary of the
flagship financial inclu-
sion scheme.

marked shift in approach

She also said the JAM
(Jan Dhan-Aadhaar-Mo-
bile) pipeline created
through account holders'
consent-based linking of
bank accounts with Aad-
har and mobile numbers of
the account holders, which
is one of the important pil-
lars of the financial inclu-
sion ecosystem, has ena-
bled instant DBT under
various government wel-
fare schemes to the eligible
beneficiaries.

megawatt data centres — almost double the present size of the
total industry —over a period of 10
years, a senior company official said.
AdaniConneX Senior Vice President and

centres of the company will come up
in Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Delhi,

US in for India’s
vision of $30 tn eco
New Delhi (PTI): India's
diesel exports fell by 11%
in July and overseas ship-
ment of petrol dropped by
4.5% after the government
slapped a windfall profit
tax on such sales, official
data showed.
Diesel exports dropped
to 2.18 million tonnes in
July from 2.45 million
tonnes a month back, data
from the Oil Ministry's Pe-
troleum Planning and
Analysis Cell (PPAC)
showed. Similarly, petrol
exports fell to 1.1 million
tonnes from 1.16 million
tonnes in June.
India first imposed
windfall profit taxes on
July 1, joining a growing
number of nations that
taxes super normal profits
of energy companies. Ex-
port duties of `6 per litre
were levied on petrol and
aviation turbine fuel and
`13 a litre on diesel.
The duties were partial-
ly adjusted in three rounds
on July 20, August 2 and
August 19, and have now
been removed for petrol,
with `7 per litre and `2 per
litre remaining for diesel
and ATF, respectively
.
In July, India exported
4.68 million tonnes of pe-
troleum products, 82% of
which was petrol, diesel
and ATF. ATF exports
were marginally down to
583,000 tonnes in July
from 591,000 tonnes in the
previous month, the PPAC
data showed.
Diesel exports in March
touched the second highest
level of 3.36 million tonnes,
before tapering to 2.7 mil-
lion tonnes in the following
month. They rose to 3.05
million tonnes in May and
fell to 2.45 million tonnes in
June. The highest ever
amount of diesel was ex-
ported in April 2020 when
3.4 million tonnes of the
fuel was shipped. Petrol ex-
ports peaked at 1.6 million
tonnes in March.

States peg kharif
rice procurement

New Delhi (PTI): The state
governments have pegged
the rice procurement target
for the 2022 Kharif market-
ing season at around 506
lakh tonnes, the same as
the last year's level, not-
withstanding the likely
marginal drop in the out-
put, according to sources.
However, the procure-
ment estimates would be
firmed up by the Union
Food Ministry next week
after deliberations with the
state government officials,
the sources added.
The government pro-
cures paddy and converts it
into the rice at mills. The
procurement of paddy
grown in the Kharif season
starts in October. The gov-
ernment has fixed the MSP
of 'common' grade paddy at
`2,040 per quintal and
'grade A' at 2,060 per quin-
tal for the 2022-23 market-
ing year.

proached the top court
seeking bail in the case.
A Lucknow bench of
the Allahabad High
Court had earlier this
month rejected his bail
application. Kappan
was booked under the
Unlawful Activities
(Prevention) Act.
His plea, on being
mentioned for an ur-
gent hearing, was di-
rected to be listed on
August 26 by former
Chief Justice N V Ra-
mana last week.
Chief Justice Lalit,
along with Justice Bhat,
will also hear an appeal
filed by human rights
activist Navlakha, an
accused in the Elgar
Parishad-Maoist links
case, against the Bom-
bay High Court order of
April 26, rejecting his
plea that he be placed
under house custody in-
stead of being lodged in

Navlakha and other ar-
rested accused pertains
to the Elgar Parishad
conclave held in Pune
on December 31, 2017.
Police had alleged that
the event was funded by
Maoists.

wheat production is
projected to have de-
clined nearly three per
cent to 106.84 million
tonnes in the 2021-22
crop year. The decline is
likely to have been
caused by a heatwave
that resulted in shriv-
elled grains in the
northern states of Pun-
jab and Haryana.
There were reports
that India was planning
to import wheat in view
of the shortage but the
government denied it.
This year, India re-
corded its warmest
March in 122 years with
a severe heatwave
scorching large swathes
of the country in the
month. The average
temperatures observed
pan-India in April was
35.05 degrees Celsius,
which was the fourth-
highest for the month in
122 years.
Agriculture experts
underscore the need to
raise the issue of cli-
mate change impacting
India’s food security at
the COP27 which is
scheduled for Novem-
ber. They say that
COP27 can be a critical
turning point.
Shweta Saini, a sen-
ior consultant at the In-
dian Council for Re-
search on International
Economic Relations
(ICRIER), said food se-
curity and green ener-
gies have to be balanced
at these international
negotiations.
“For countries like
India where the malnu-
trition rate is very high
and it is an agriculture-
centric country, we feel
the commitment for
food security and green
energies has to be bal-
anced. So, while India is
talking about biofuel,
the question we should
be looking at is whether
food can be used for
fuel,” she said.
The National Policy
on Biofuels, 2018 allows
production of ethanol
from damaged food
grains like wheat and
broken rice.
Devinder Sharma, a
food policy and agricul-
tural trade expert, said
at COP27, countries like
India need to stop their
“obsession” with GDP.
“Till the economy is
not structured in a way
to radically challenge
the climate crisis, noth-
ing will change, and
that is something that
needs to be brought out
in the discussions at
COP27,” he said. The
COP is the main deci-
sion-making body of the
United Nations Frame-
work Convention on Cli-

Air said that it suffered
a mega data breach in-
volving the personal
details of its passengers
onThursdayandshared
it with the team of In-
dian Computer Emer-
gency Response Team
(CERT-In), the airline
informed on Sunday
.
“This is to inform
you that a temporary
technical configuration
error related to our
login and sign-up ser-
vice was reported on
Thursday, August 25,
2022,” Akasa Air said. It
informed CERT-IN that
details of fliers such as
name, gender, phone
number, and email id
were leaked.
The airlines claimed
to have self-reported the
leak to CERT-In, and
the agency is now likely
to conduct a thorough
investigation to delve
into the depths of the
incident.
Besides notifying the
CERT-in, Akasa Air
also sent emails on Sat-
urday and Sunday to its
passengers. It apolo-
gised to its passengers
for the error with the
data and assured them
that it would not hap-
pen again.
“We sincerely apolo-
gize to you for any in-
convenience caused as
a result of this inci-
dent,” Akasa Air said in
the mail.

finishing work is going

Vinayak Pai said on
Sunday

Tata Projects Ltd is
constructing the new
Parliament building
which will have a grand
constitution hall to
showcase India’s demo-
craticheritage,alounge
for members of Parlia-
ment, a library, multi-
ple committee rooms,
dining areas and ample
parking space.
“The main structure
(of the new Parliament
building) has been com-
pleted. We are now at
the stage where we are
doing a lot of internal
finishing work,” Pai
told PTI in an interview.
“... it is one of its
kind, so the finishes are
very well thought out
by the architects, pro-
curing that and doing
all the finishing,” he
added.
The government has
maintained that the
winter session of Par-
liament will be held in
the new building being
built under the Naren-
dra Modi government’s
ambitious Central Vista
redevelopment project.
Replying to a ques-
tion on how Tata Pro-
jects is coping with the
challenge of high infla-
tionary pressure, Pai
said there are definitely
challenges which most
of the industries are
facing as they rely on a
lot on commodities.
“So, one one thing
which we have to con-
stantly look at is pro-
curing smart. So, we
have long-term con-
tracts on a lot of our
bulk material purchas-
es we do,” Pai said.
The other thing, he
said, is that many of
the contracts have price
variation clauses. “So,
that gives us protec-
tion. It might not really
give us the full nature
of the increase, but a
good part of it gets mit-
igated by those claus-
es,” Vinnayak Pai said.
