DON’T BET WITH ChatGPT – STUDY SHOWS
LANGUAGE AIs OFTEN MAKE IRRATIONAL DECISIONS
he past few years
have seen an explo-
sion of progress in
large language
model artificial in-
telligence systems that can do
things like write poetry, con-
duct humanlike conversa-
tions and pass medical school
exams. This progress has
yielded models like ChatGPT
that could have major social
and economic ramifications
ranging from job displace-
ments and increased misin-
formation to massive produc-
tivity boosts.
Despitetheirimpressiveabil-
ities, large language models
don’t actually think. They tend
to make elementary mistakes
and even make things up. How-
ever, because they generate flu-
ent language, people tend to
respondtothemasthoughthey

ers to study the models’ “cogni-
tive” abilities and biases, work
that has grown in importance
nowthatlargelanguagemodels

WORDS AND THOUGHTS
Inspired by the growing body
of research in BERTology and
related fields like cognitive
science, my student Zhisheng
Tang and I set out to answer a
seemingly simple question
about large language models:
Are they rational?
MAKING A BET
So are language models ra-
tional? Can they understand
expected gain? We conducted
a detailed set of experiments
to show that, in their original
form, models like BERT be-
have randomly when present-
ed with betlike choices. This is
the case even when we give it
a trick question like: If you
toss a coin and it comes up
heads, you win a diamond; if
it comes up tails, you lose a
car. Which would you take?
The correct answer is heads,
but the AI models chose tails
about half the time.
RIGHT DECISION
This line of study is important
because rational decision-
making under conditions of
uncertainty is critical to build-
ing systems that understand
costs and benefits. By balanc-

y experience in the corporate
world has exposed me to a re-
alization that businesses go
through a lot of upheavals due
to internal and external factors
that may be detrimental to the
growth of businesses such as
new competitors, new market
trends, ever changing technol-
ogy and economic fluctuations.
And this is what I will term as
business disruption. This dis-
ruption usually occurs when-
ever a radical change is intro-
duced in the echo system of an
industry due to the factors be-
yond the control of the senior
executives.
Seeing the current time dis-
turbances caused in almost all
types of industries, it will be
prudent to conclude that dis-
ruptions are now a part of eve-
ryday business environment,
where it has great potential to
distract corporate leaders away
from their core business. The
disruption term has gone too
broad to includes a variety of
sudden changes in economics,
politics, Brexit, trade wars, and
presidential tweets. The emer-
gence of globalisation with its
interconnectivity through so-
cial media has aided the in-
creased speed and sharing of
information that forms the
back bone of this modern age
disruption.
In a KPMG report, titled “de-
coding disruption” it was noted
that business leaders are now
under constant pressure to un-
derstand and adapt to ongoing
change, where avoiding change
may no longer be an option.
In my opinion, there are more
than one element and incident
that can ruin a business. But the
truth is, it is difficult to predict
when, in what shape and with
what magnitude a business dis-
ruption will occur. Yet, if we be-
lievevariousglobalsurveyscon-
ducted recently, we can reach a
consensusonthefivetopdisrup-
tors and these are startups, epi-
demics. Client expectations,
market forces and calamities.
Therefore, creating a strate-
gy to deal with disruptions asks
for a down to earth simple ac-
tion plan to lead the company
from where it stands now to
where it is supposed to reach as
per planned time lines. This ac-
tionable strategy obviously will
make every company disrup-
tion ready
.
So, the question arises, what
is the cause of business disrup-
tion? It is observed that markets
which are disruption prone are
generally those that include a
large and an inflexible proce-
dure of businesses. Such com-
panies have dominated markets
and have been in existence for
decades and therefore, they de-
velop a feeling of invincibility.
This very omission of reality
renders them vulnerable to dis-
ruption by the startups that are
willing to give more value to
customers.
Another route to tackle dis-
ruption is mindful scaling of
the company
. Prior to selecting
any fresh investment in tech-
nology, software, infrastruc-
ture, or production line, do a
crystal gage about what all pro-
cess are needed to be gone
through. It may well be equally
segacious to weigh other fac-
tors like how can client rela-
tionships be activated in new
areas? Consider if any changes
are needed in your marketing
strategy as well. If your num-
bers are stagnant, think of ex-
perimenting with new methods
of reaching the stake holders.
While you’re checking on all
the above, have a re look at how
the interests of existing cus-
tomers are taken care of. Obvi-
ously, thinking of this magni-
tude deserves a well worked out
business map, a matured vision
and real goal-setting alongside
precision decision-making
skills. Only if the above condi-
tions are satisfied, mindful scal-
ing becomes a success and dis-
ruptions a forgotten failure.
In the race to remain a few
steps ahead of all disruptions,
senior managers have to con-
sider three questions. firstly,
what types of innovation are
truly disruptive? Secondly, is
low cost the only basis for up-
ending established business
models? And lastly, is it only
outside forces that are culpable
of disruptions? Academicians
may disagree about how prac-
tice fits theory when the influ-
ence and devastation of disrup-
tion is discussed, but business
leaders across sectors need to
be keenly aware that estab-
lished models are under a con-
tinuous threat from technology
oriented disruptions. There-
fore, in my personal opinion,
self-created disruptions in our
policies, procedures and mar-
ket evaluation may keep us
ahead of competitors.
We must remember that
adapting to disruption requires
a management outlook that em-
braces rather than resists. It is
clear from the experience of
past two decades of rapid busi-
ness changes, that even estab-
lished business houses collapse
and crumble if their leaders
fail in being a visionary, strong
character person and poses the
required traits to lead their or-
ganisation when a crisis knocks
at their door. The three cardinal
principles to keep our heads
above water are leadership,
Company culture customers.

FIRST INDIA SUNDAY SPECIAL
BY TRIDIB RAMAN
The author is a journalist and political
commentator and views expressed are his personal
These days the demand
for restoration of ‘Old
Pension Scheme’ (OPS)
has gained momentum.
Till now the BJP was
showing opposition to this
as the party believed that
‘the economic condition of
the states will deteriorate
due to the restoration of
the old pension scheme.’
But in view of the impend-
ing Karnataka elections,
now the central govern-
ment has also started
saying that ‘it will review
the new pension scheme.’
Actually, ‘OPS’ is the
pension scheme of the
Central Government under
which monthly pension is
provided to the beneficiar-
ies till the end of their life.
This pension amount is
equal to half of the last
pay of that retired person.
On the other hand, under
the new pension scheme
ie ‘NPS’, the beneficiary
can withdraw only 60 per
cent of his investment
amount on the retirement.
The scheme was launched
from 1 Jan 2004 and was
made applicable to all
citizens from 1 May 2009
on a voluntary basis. In
OPS, the pension amount
is paid by the govern-
ment, whereas in NPS,
the contribution is made
by the government as well
as the employee. Under
NPS, the government and
employees contribute 10
and 14 per cent of the
salary, respectively, to the
pension fund. Seeing that
OPS can become a big
election issue in Karnataka
polls and the upcoming
2024 general elections,
the Modi government said
that it will review the NPS
and for this a committee
has also been formed.
While the decision of the
committee is ‘imprisoned
in the womb of the future’,
this message has already
been given to the public
as to how much the PM
cares for the pension
holders.
With Karnataka assembly elections still
more than a month away, several
opinion polls in the state have raised hopes
of the Congress. Perhaps this is the reason
why the tussle between
the two contenders for
the post of CM from
the Congress, ie former
Chief Minister Siddara-
maiah and Karnataka
Pradesh Committee
chief DK Shivakumar is
clearly visible. Recently,
Siddaramaiah openly
told his mind to a news channel and said,
“Anybody has the right to dream of be-
coming the Chief Minister. I also dream of
becoming the CM. If you want to become
CM, then what is wrong in it. But the Chief
Minister will be the one whom the MLAs
will choose.” But the channel ran the news
that ‘the CM of Karnataka will be the one
whom the high command will want.’ Sid-
daramaiah was incensed and demanded
an apology from the
channel. The BJP is
keeping an eye on this
whole scenario and the
saffron party is hopeful
that it will get the benefit
of the mutual fight be-
tween the two Congress
heavyweights. Anyway,
BJP has increased the
reserved quota for Vokkaligas from 4 to
6 percent and for Lingayats from 5 to 7
percent under OBC reservation. Playing a
big election bet, BJP feels that this is their
‘master stroke’ and has the potential to
turn the tide in this election.
The plan for a comprehensive reshuffle
in the Congress organisation is yet to
materialised. However, sources reveal that
Kharge has worked hard for a comprehen-
sive reshuffle in the CWC, Congress Elec-
tion Committee and the Congress organi-
sation, after getting a free-hand from the
Gandhi family. He has also prepared the
final list of names, but its announcement
seems to be have been postponed till the
Karnataka elections. Kharge is also doing
the work of selecting Congress candidates
in Karnataka, and the Gandhi family has
made it clear that ‘the family will not have
any interference in the candidate selection
process.’ Based on that the list of candi-
dates is being finalised.
Recently, BJP MP from Bihar and for-
mer Union Minister Rajiv Pratap Rudy
announced in front of a few of his fellow
MPs in the Central Hall that ‘he will not
contest the 2024
elections, but will
prove himself to be
the ‘King of Bihar’.
He said that while
disclosing his strat-
egies and stressed
that ‘he is trying to
bring together the
‘forward’ castes of
Bihar, especially the
Rajput community, on a single platform
and intends to take his forward organisa-
tion to every district of Bihar.
While the tussle between DK Shivakumar and Sid-
daramaiah is heating up in Karnataka, Pandit Raj
Kumar Sharma, a renowned astrologer from Mumbai,
who has made many accurate political predictions in
the past, has compared the horoscopes of both the
contenders and said, “Former Karnataka CM Siddara-
maiah was born on 3 August 1947. His zodiac sign
is Aquarius, Nakshatra Ghanishtha, Lagna Scorpio.
His mahadasha of Ketu is going on since 2020. Ketu
is sitting in the sign of Mars of Siddaramaiah, this
yog makes him an adept politician, but because of
this yog, his chair was snatched last time. The Ketu
Mahadasha is to last till 2027. Because of this, a
duality is being created in his horoscope, it may be
that he will have to struggle a lot to get the CM’s chair.
On the other hand, DK Shivakumar, who was born
on May 15, 1961, has Taurus zodiac sign and Kritika
Nakshatra, Shani Mahadasha is going on in his horo-
scope since 2015. That is why till now, he has been
playing the role of kingmaker from behind the scenes.
Because of this he also had to go to jail.
Pari Bishnoi is a young IAS officer from Rajasthan.
She was selected for civil service in 2020, and
now she is the SDM of Gangtok. Recently, Pari’s
role, in the rescue operation of a huge avalanche in
Gangtok, in which many tourists
lost their lives, was highly appreci-
ated. Very soon Pari is going to be
married to Bhajan Lal’s grandson
and Kuldeep Bishnoi’s son Bhavya
Bishnoi. Bhavya is also the MLA
of Adampur. But the Bishnoi
family has come under the target
of trollers these days. In fact,
Kuldeep Bishnoi confirmed the
news by tweeting that he has engaged his younger
son Chaitanya to Srishti Arora. Bishnoi community
is not liking this act of his as the community wants
Kuldeep to marry both his sons to girls from Bish-
noi community only.
Do you remember Durga Shakti Nagpal? Durga
Shakti, who took on Akhilesh Yadav and the Da-
bang Yadav family of UP, has now become the DM of
Banda after 13 years. By the way, those who clear IAS
become DM in the fourth-fifth year of their service.
But Durga Shakti Nagpal’s is different. She grabbed
media headlines as soon as she entered civil service,
but this time Durga Shakti is in discussion not
because of herself but because of her IAS husband
Abhishek Singh. This is the same Abhishek Singh,
when he was on duty in the last election, he had put a
big sticker on his car with his photo written ‘Election
Observer’, and he himself had posted this picture on
social media. Because of this, he was also suspended.
He has also worked in many films and serials and is
very active on social media. His statement in a pod-
cast was also very popular in which he said, ‘I wanted
to be a gangster as a child’.

Various dignitaries, influenc-

avatars.
Guests arrived dressed in
their finest retro attire, with
ladies sporting polka dot dress-
es, cat-eye glasses, and pearl
necklaces, while men donned
leather jackets, fedoras, and
skinny ties.
As guests entered the venue,
they were greeted with a red
carpet and a photo booth where
they could snap some retro-
themed pictures to remember
the event. The décor featured
classic items such as jukeboxes,
vintage posters, and record
players, creating a perfect back-
drop for the event. Even the food
and drink offerings were care-
fully curated to fit the retro
theme, with classic dishes like
mac and cheese, fried chicken,

TOP TWEETS DON’T BET WITH ChatGPT – STUDY SHOWS LANGUAGE AIs OFTEN MAKE IRRATIONAL DECISIONS he past few years have seen an explo- sion of progress in large language model artificial in- telligence systems that can do things like write poetry, con- duct humanlike conversa- tions and pass medical school exams. This progress has yielded models like ChatGPT that could have major social and economic ramifications ranging from job displace- ments and increased misin- formation to massive produc- tivity boosts. Despitetheirimpressiveabil- ities, large language models don’t actually think. They tend to make elementary mistakes and even make things up. How- ever, because they generate flu- ent language, people tend to respondtothemasthoughthey do think. This has led research- ers to study the models’ “cogni- tive” abilities and biases, work that has grown in importance nowthatlargelanguagemodels are widely accessible. WORDS AND THOUGHTS Inspired by the growing body of research in BERTology and related fields like cognitive science, my student Zhisheng Tang and I set out to answer a seemingly simple question about large language models: Are they rational? MAKING A BET So are language models ra- tional? Can they understand expected gain? We conducted a detailed set of experiments to show that, in their original form, models like BERT be- have randomly when present- ed with betlike choices. This is the case even when we give it a trick question like: If you toss a coin and it comes up heads, you win a diamond; if it comes up tails, you lose a car. Which would you take? The correct answer is heads, but the AI models chose tails about half the time. RIGHT DECISION This line of study is important because rational decision- making under conditions of uncertainty is critical to build- ing systems that understand costs and benefits. Editor-In-Chief: Dr Jagdeesh Chandra Editor: Anita Hada Sangwan responsible for selection of news under the PRB Act y experience in the corporate world has exposed me to a re- alization that businesses go through a lot of upheavals due to internal and external factors that may be detrimental to the growth of businesses such as new competitors, new market trends, ever changing technol- ogy and economic fluctuations. And this is what I will term as business disruption. This dis- ruption usually occurs when- ever a radical change is intro- duced in the echo system of an industry due to the factors be- yond the control of the senior executives. Seeing the current time dis- turbances caused in almost all types of industries, it will be prudent to conclude that dis- ruptions are now a part of eve- ryday business environment, where it has great potential to distract corporate leaders away from their core business. The disruption term has gone too broad to includes a variety of sudden changes in economics, politics, Brexit, trade wars, and presidential tweets. The emer- gence of globalisation with its interconnectivity through so- cial media has aided the in- creased speed and sharing of information that forms the back bone of this modern age disruption. In a KPMG report, titled “de- coding disruption” it was noted that business leaders are now under constant pressure to un- derstand and adapt to ongoing change, where avoiding change may no longer be an option. In my opinion, there are more than one element and incident that can ruin a business. But the truth is, it is difficult to predict when, in what shape and with what magnitude a business dis- ruption will occur. Yet, if we be- lievevariousglobalsurveyscon- ducted recently, we can reach a consensusonthefivetopdisrup- tors and these are startups, epi- demics. Client expectations, market forces and calamities. Therefore, creating a strate- gy to deal with disruptions asks for a down to earth simple ac- tion plan to lead the company from where it stands now to where it is supposed to reach as per planned time lines. This ac- tionable strategy obviously will make every company disrup- tion ready . So, the question arises, what is the cause of business disrup- tion? It is observed that markets which are disruption prone are generally those that include a large and an inflexible proce- dure of businesses. Such com- panies have dominated markets and have been in existence for decades and therefore, they de- velop a feeling of invincibility. This very omission of reality renders them vulnerable to dis- ruption by the startups that are willing to give more value to customers. Another route to tackle dis- ruption is mindful scaling of the company . Prior to selecting any fresh investment in tech- nology, software, infrastruc- ture, or production line, do a crystal gage about what all pro- cess are needed to be gone through. It may well be equally segacious to weigh other fac- tors like how can client rela- tionships be activated in new areas? Consider if any changes are needed in your marketing strategy as well. If your num- bers are stagnant, think of ex- perimenting with new methods of reaching the stake holders. While you’re checking on all the above, have a re look at how the interests of existing cus- tomers are taken care of. Obvi- ously, thinking of this magni- tude deserves a well worked out business map, a matured vision and real goal-setting alongside precision decision-making skills. Only if the above condi- tions are satisfied, mindful scal- ing becomes a success and dis- ruptions a forgotten failure. In the race to remain a few steps ahead of all disruptions, senior managers have to con- sider three questions. firstly, what types of innovation are truly disruptive? Secondly, is low cost the only basis for up- ending established business models? And lastly, is it only outside forces that are culpable of disruptions? Academicians may disagree about how prac- tice fits theory when the influ- ence and devastation of disrup- tion is discussed, but business leaders across sectors need to be keenly aware that estab- lished models are under a con- tinuous threat from technology oriented disruptions. There- fore, in my personal opinion, self-created disruptions in our policies, procedures and mar- ket evaluation may keep us ahead of competitors. We must remember that adapting to disruption requires a management outlook that em- braces rather than resists. It is clear from the experience of past two decades of rapid busi- ness changes, that even estab- lished business houses collapse and crumble if their leaders fail in being a visionary, strong character person and poses the required traits to lead their or- ganisation when a crisis knocks at their door. The three cardinal principles to keep our heads above water are leadership, Company culture customers. A total of 56 new posts will be created in Directorate of Technical Education (Training) including 1 post of Director Training, 14 posts of Joint Director, 26 posts of Deputy Direc- tor and 15 posts of As- sistant Director. This will provide opportu- nities to officers who are not getting promo- tion at higher level due to lack of posts for a long time. Along with this, a well-coor- dinated cadre struc- ture will be possible. The Chief Minister had announced in the budget regarding the reorganisation of the posts of the official level of DTE, Jodhpur. 56 new posts to be created in DTE as CM approves proposal The Rashtriya Sewa Bharti is a not-for-profit organisa- tion that follows the ideological pursuit of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). “We should stay away from seeking fame. Indulging in hyperbole will not do,” Bhagwat said. “We are not doing anything great, we are only fulfilling our responsibility to society.... this should be the underlin- ing emotion,” he said. BHAGWAT ASKS WORKERS TO STAY HUMBLE Mirch Masala FIRST INDIA SUNDAY SPECIAL BY TRIDIB RAMAN The author is a journalist and political commentator and views expressed are his personal These days the demand for restoration of ‘Old Pension Scheme’ (OPS) has gained momentum. Till now the BJP was showing opposition to this as the party believed that ‘the economic condition of the states will deteriorate due to the restoration of the old pension scheme.’ But in view of the impend- ing Karnataka elections, now the central govern- ment has also started saying that ‘it will review the new pension scheme.’ Actually, ‘OPS’ is the pension scheme of the Central Government under which monthly pension is provided to the beneficiar- ies till the end of their life. This pension amount is equal to half of the last pay of that retired person. On the other hand, under the new pension scheme ie ‘NPS’, the beneficiary can withdraw only 60 per cent of his investment amount on the retirement. The scheme was launched from 1 Jan 2004 and was made applicable to all citizens from 1 May 2009 on a voluntary basis. In OPS, the pension amount is paid by the govern- ment, whereas in NPS, the contribution is made by the government as well as the employee. Under NPS, the government and employees contribute 10 and 14 per cent of the salary, respectively, to the pension fund. Seeing that OPS can become a big election issue in Karnataka polls and the upcoming 2024 general elections, the Modi government said that it will review the NPS and for this a committee has also been formed. While the decision of the committee is ‘imprisoned in the womb of the future’, this message has already been given to the public as to how much the PM cares for the pension holders. With Karnataka assembly elections still more than a month away, several opinion polls in the state have raised hopes of the Congress. Perhaps this is the reason why the tussle between the two contenders for the post of CM from the Congress, ie former Chief Minister Siddara- maiah and Karnataka Pradesh Committee chief DK Shivakumar is clearly visible. Recently, Siddaramaiah openly told his mind to a news channel and said, “Anybody has the right to dream of be- coming the Chief Minister. I also dream of becoming the CM. If you want to become CM, then what is wrong in it. But the Chief Minister will be the one whom the MLAs will choose.” But the channel ran the news that ‘the CM of Karnataka will be the one whom the high command will want.’ Sid- daramaiah was incensed and demanded an apology from the channel. The BJP is keeping an eye on this whole scenario and the saffron party is hopeful that it will get the benefit of the mutual fight be- tween the two Congress heavyweights. Anyway, BJP has increased the reserved quota for Vokkaligas from 4 to 6 percent and for Lingayats from 5 to 7 percent under OBC reservation. Playing a big election bet, BJP feels that this is their ‘master stroke’ and has the potential to turn the tide in this election. The plan for a comprehensive reshuffle in the Congress organisation is yet to materialised. However, sources reveal that Kharge has worked hard for a comprehen- sive reshuffle in the CWC, Congress Elec- tion Committee and the Congress organi- sation, after getting a free-hand from the Gandhi family. He has also prepared the final list of names, but its announcement seems to be have been postponed till the Karnataka elections. Kharge is also doing the work of selecting Congress candidates in Karnataka, and the Gandhi family has made it clear that ‘the family will not have any interference in the candidate selection process.’ Based on that the list of candi- dates is being finalised. Recently, BJP MP from Bihar and for- mer Union Minister Rajiv Pratap Rudy announced in front of a few of his fellow MPs in the Central Hall that ‘he will not contest the 2024 elections, but will prove himself to be the ‘King of Bihar’. He said that while disclosing his strat- egies and stressed that ‘he is trying to bring together the ‘forward’ castes of Bihar, especially the Rajput community, on a single platform and intends to take his forward organisa- tion to every district of Bihar. While the tussle between DK Shivakumar and Sid- daramaiah is heating up in Karnataka, Pandit Raj Kumar Sharma, a renowned astrologer from Mumbai, who has made many accurate political predictions in the past, has compared the horoscopes of both the contenders and said, “Former Karnataka CM Siddara- maiah was born on 3 August 1947. His zodiac sign is Aquarius, Nakshatra Ghanishtha, Lagna Scorpio. His mahadasha of Ketu is going on since 2020. Ketu is sitting in the sign of Mars of Siddaramaiah, this yog makes him an adept politician, but because of this yog, his chair was snatched last time. The Ketu Mahadasha is to last till 2027. Because of this, a duality is being created in his horoscope, it may be that he will have to struggle a lot to get the CM’s chair. On the other hand, DK Shivakumar, who was born on May 15, 1961, has Taurus zodiac sign and Kritika Nakshatra, Shani Mahadasha is going on in his horo- scope since 2015. That is why till now, he has been playing the role of kingmaker from behind the scenes. Because of this he also had to go to jail. Pari Bishnoi is a young IAS officer from Rajasthan. She was selected for civil service in 2020, and now she is the SDM of Gangtok. Recently, Pari’s role, in the rescue operation of a huge avalanche in Gangtok, in which many tourists lost their lives, was highly appreci- ated. Very soon Pari is going to be married to Bhajan Lal’s grandson and Kuldeep Bishnoi’s son Bhavya Bishnoi. Bhavya is also the MLA of Adampur. But the Bishnoi family has come under the target of trollers these days. In fact, Kuldeep Bishnoi confirmed the news by tweeting that he has engaged his younger son Chaitanya to Srishti Arora. Bishnoi community is not liking this act of his as the community wants Kuldeep to marry both his sons to girls from Bish- noi community only. Do you remember Durga Shakti Nagpal? Durga Shakti, who took on Akhilesh Yadav and the Da- bang Yadav family of UP, has now become the DM of Banda after 13 years. By the way, those who clear IAS become DM in the fourth-fifth year of their service. But Durga Shakti Nagpal’s is different. She grabbed media headlines as soon as she entered civil service, but this time Durga Shakti is in discussion not because of herself but because of her IAS husband Abhishek Singh. This is the same Abhishek Singh, when he was on duty in the last election, he had put a big sticker on his car with his photo written ‘Election Observer’, and he himself had posted this picture on social media. Because of this, he was also suspended. He has also worked in many films and serials and is very active on social media. His statement in a pod- cast was also very popular in which he said, ‘I wanted to be a gangster as a child’. WHAT DOES ASTROLOGER PANDIT SHARMA SAY ABOUT DK AND SIDDA?
