Components: The Business Model Canvas, The card ‘patterns of change’.
Phase 1 – Creating your Business Model
• Handout the Business Model Canvas model.
• Each workshop participant creates his own business model, starting with the value
proposition or the customer segment.
• After 15 minutes, get together
• Everybody explains his business model to each other
• Create one business model canvas for your company using all insights
• At the end of the first hour, there is one sustaining business model.

Macro – contextual level
The contextual level consists of ‘global
forces’, think about: economical
developments, demographics, politics, technologi
cal developments and social developments.
Foresight Cards – STEEP edition focusses on
external forces that address the contextual level.
Meso – transactional level
The transactional level consists of ‘market
forces’, think about: suppliers, supply and
demand, distribution, competitors and strategic
alliances.

Purpose: Stress testing a business model.
Components: The Business Model Canvas, The card ‘patterns of change’.
Phase 2 – Stress testing a Business Model
• Place the business model canvas in the center
• Devide each buildingblock to a (set of) players
• Shuffle the cards and deal each player five cards.
• The first player looks at the other building blocks and
chooses a card with a pattern of change symbol.
• The player shows his card, and speaks out his
chosen pattern of change. And explains why this
is happening to the chosen business model block.
• The affected player speaks out how he changes his
business model to address the impact. If done
correctly he wins the card.
• Look if any other building blocks are also affected
• Clockwise the next player chooses a card.
• The player who has won the most cards
wins the game

This analysis tool helps to assess the external macro environment!
The Foresight Cards contains 125 macro forces classified into the STEEP categories (social,
technological, economical, environmental and political). Other known acronyms derived
from STEEP are: PEST, PESTLE, STEP, STEPJE, STEEPLED, DESTEP and LEPEST. The STEEP
acronym is well known and used all over the world as a basis for external analysis.
For example the STEEP cards can be used by individuals and groups to have workshops to:
• create awareness about past, current and future changes;
• stress test a business model;
• create a SWOT analysis;
• energize;
• tell a story;
• discuss certain (strategic) topics;
• think about systems and how external developments connect to each other;
• determine key-uncertainties to create future scenarios (scenario planning);
• etc. etc. etc.
