HAVE YOU SEEN THESE?
Big Five. Buffalo, elephant, lion, leopard and rhino.
Little Five. Buffalo weaver, elephant shrew, ant lion,
leopard tortoise and rhino beetle.
Big Six Birds. Ground hornbill, kori bustard, lappet-
faced vulture, martial eagle, Pel’s fishing-owl and
saddle-billed stork.
Big Five Trees. Baobab, fever tree, knobthorn,
marula and mopane.
HIGHLIGHTS IN THE SOUTH
•Look for big cats on the S28 and S137 near Crocodile Bridge
• Get eye-level with the birds at the Biyamiti weir
• See animals, birds and trees on the H4-1 between Skukuza
and Lower Sabie
• Relax at the Lake Panic bird hide near Skukuza
• Imagine you’re Mufasa at the Nkumbe viewpoint
• Spend a night in the Tamboti tented camp
• Drive along the Timbavati River (H7, S39 and S40)
• Grab your binos and head to the N’wanetsi picnic site
• Look for lions on the S100
HIGHLIGHTS IN THE NORTH
• Appreciate the view at Crooks’ Corner
• Look for birds (and have a picnic) at the Pafuri picnic site
• Drive the Mphongolo Loop (S56 and H1-7) near Sirheni
• Have a beer on the stoep at the Shingwedzi restaurant
• Drive the Red Rocks Loop (S52 and H1-6) near Bateleur
• Drive along the S50 and sit at the Kanniedood hide
• Have a sundowner on the restaurant deck at Mopani
• Drive the S50 along the Nshawu River
• Drive the S46, S93 and S44 along the Letaba and Olifants rivers
• Have a sundowner on the restaurant deck at Olifants
• Drive the S92 across the Olifants River and past Balule to
the Bangu waterhole

1 Sandveld. This sandy soil, known for its
floral diversity and dramatic sandstone ridges,
is found only in the north of the park.
2 Woodland savannah on shale.
Bushwillow woodland with thorn thickets.
Look for Sharpe’s grysbok, nyala and leopard.
3 Bush savannah. Depending on the soil type,
mopane trees occur in both stunted and
tree form. Elephant and buffalo are common.
4 Open shrub savannah. Mopane-dominated
landscape with shrub-sized trees. Game is
generally scarce but congregates at water.
5 Mopane woodland on granite. This area has
low game density because of the unpalatable
sourveld grass.
6 Woodland mixed with sweet grazing.
These pockets of knobthorn and marula
woodland attract a variety of grazers.
7 Lebombo Mountains. Diverse habitat
including hills, woodlands and pockets of
riverine vegetation.
8 Olifants rugged veld. Mixed grassland,
woodland and thornveld, attracting grazers
and browsers.
9 Savannah grassland on basalt. Sweet
grazing makes this area a hot spot for predators
that hang around the herds of plains game.
10 Mixed woodland on granite. Rolling
hills with thorn trees interspersed with
sweet grazing.
11 Woodland and thorn thickets. Dense bush
savannah with lots of game because of the
proximity to the Sabie and Crocodile rivers.
12 Pretoriuskop sourveld. Granite hills
with silver cluster-leaf, sicklebush, bushwillow
and tall sourveld grass. Look for kudu and
mountain reedbuck.
13 Malelane Mountains. Granite hills and
knobthorn sweetveld. This is a good area for
wild dogs.
14 Riverine vegetation. Tall trees grow on
the banks of all the park’s major perennial
rivers. It’s an ideal habitat for leopard, with
diverse birdlife.
