3. GSM vs. RF
GSM TECHNOLOGY RF TECHNOLOGY
•Primarily used in fleet management
systems where exact GPS coordinates of a
vehicle or incident are required. Pinpoint
location.
•Primarily used in the tracking and
recovery of assets. System merely indicate
that asset is somewhere within the
coverage radius of the RF reader.
•Reliant on GSM coverage. •Reliant on a RF reader and line of sight
with reader.
•GSM uses General Packet Radio Services
(GPRS) which is a packet-based wireless
communication service that promises
data rates from 56 up to 114 Kbps and
continuous connection to the Internet for
mobile phone and computer users to
transfer data. When GPRS goes down you
can still make a call, but you can’t transfer
data.
•RF uses radio waves, with 125kHz,
13.56MHz, 868MHz and 915MHz being
the most common frequencies to transfer
data. Line of sight, signal attenuation and
rock with high metal content influences
RF.
