THE POWER OF BEACONS
PROXIMITY BASED SERVICES
Devices are able to listen for signals from beacons placed in the
physical world and then trigger any experience via an app.
Beacon technology allows a mobile device to
understand it's exact position, even indoors where
typically not able to pick up GPS signals.
Mobile devices automatically wake-up when in
proximity to a beacon, driving engagement with
an app at the right time and place.
Setting up beacons is relatively low cost, as the
hardware is inexpensive and the beacon SDK can
easily be added to an existing mobile application.
Bluetooth is designed to have low power
consumption, which means that there is minimal
impact on the devices battery life.
The app on the smartphone can
then trigger an action, such as to
show a notification or change the
UI/UX.
The signal wakes-up smartphones nearby via
Bluetooth Smart or Bluetooth 4.0 if the
smartphone is running a respective App
programmed for this beacon.
Say you're arriving at your favorite hotel. A beacon
placed at the reception triggers the app on your smartphone to
inform a second app which is running on a tablet at the hotel
reception, that you just entered. The staff can instantly view your
name and preferences to allow a personalized welcome and stay.

INCREASED APP ENGAGEMENT BY 400%
Carrefour, the $20B+ multinational retailer, has been using
mobile apps since 2012. The purpose of one of these apps was
to make the shopper experience easier and more efficient by
helping them find new stores and check prices on items with a
mobile phone.
Beacons deployed by our hardware partner kontakt.io enriched
the app and Carrefour shopping experience with new features,
including welcoming a shopper once he or she enters a store,
suggesting products based on previous or current purchases,
and displaying coupons. During the test period the number of
app users increased by 600%.
Simultaneously, the time spent on using the app increased by
400%. Finally, the proximity data gave Carrefour an invaluable
sample of data on where their customers travel throughout the
store and in what order, helping improve what the store offers
and where to further increase the store’s profitability and
opportunity to build customer loyalty.

INCREASED IN-STORE SALES BY 8%
Ever since Beacons made its debut on the iPhone in 2013, it’s
been heralded as the next big thing for retailers – one player
taking the plunge is McDonald’s. 26 McDonald’s franchises in
Columbus, Georgia have been testing out the technology with
its customers.
In a four week trial, these fast food joints have been pushing
special deals for McChicken Sandwiches and 10-piece Chicken
McNuggets. The promotions pushed McChicken Sandwich sales
up 8% and Chicken McNuggets up 7.5%. Based on these initial
results, MacDonald’s is working on rolling out programs in
additional 263 retail locations.
“Everyone is looking at their phones, millennials especially, and
that's where we've decided to engage,” Jack Pezold, a
McDonald's franchisee, said in a statement. Proximity
marketing was selected to build in-depth relationships with
customers and to introduce new set of coffee products also in
15 McDonald Cafés in Istanbul, Turkey, lately.

Elevating the customer experience in retail stores are obvious
mass-market applications for beacon technology, but the real
winners might be in manufacturing automation. Machine vision
and sensing is progressing rapidly, but it’s a complex problem
requiring lots of computing power and lengthy algorithm
runtimes to solve relatively simple navigation problems.
This is why there are huge optimization opportunities using
beacons, especially for complex production processes. Beacons
can be implemented in the fields of preventive maintenance,
service and product labeling with the significant potential to
reduce complexity of production processes and their
scheduling.
Using a smartphone, the production manager could go through
the production site and read real-time information from
machines such as downtimes or failures. Combined with
Business Intelligence tools, the manager could also use
dashboards that would enable a fast and clear analysis of the
individual machines and their batches.

IMPROVED KPI’S WITH 10,000 BEACONS
Spotless is an Australian managed provider of integrated
facilities management services to malls and other customers.
For some of its customers, whose facilities are located in high-
traffic public areas, the janitorial services provided must be
very intensive—in a food court, for instance.
In 2014, Spotless decided to build and deploy a custom
workforce management solution with the goal of reducing
litigation claims in the commercial cleaning service line. The
solution allowed Spotless to understand when cleaning KPI's
are missed in real-time and produce employee location reports
that can be used as legal defense against slip and fall litigation
claims in shopping malls.
The pilot deployment comprised two malls and 300 beacons.
After one year Spotless found the solution successful enough
that it is now deploying the technology at all 40 of the malls it
services, with the total quantity of installed beacons expected
to reach 10,000.

THE POWER OF BEACONS PROXIMITY BASED SERVICES Devices are able to listen for signals from beacons placed in the physical world and then trigger any experience via an app. Beacon technology allows a mobile device to understand it's exact position, even indoors where typically not able to pick up GPS signals. Mobile devices automatically wake-up when in proximity to a beacon, driving engagement with an app at the right time and place. Setting up beacons is relatively low cost, as the hardware is inexpensive and the beacon SDK can easily be added to an existing mobile application.
