powerful, simple management
Technology is changing the way we work, driving demand for employees who can thrive as creative, critical thinkers and digital collaborators. Tools that help employees connect instantly through chat and video and work together to solve problems are becoming the norm in offices around the world, and we believe classrooms that mirror the modern workplace will be most successful in preparing their students for the future.
Walk into any given classroom and you will find a wide range of students, some with gifts and others with learning challenges. To bridge the gap between students and empower each student to learn in the way that works best for him or her, we are committed to give schools inclusive, collaborative technology that leverages the power of the cloud to streamline classroom operations and empowers of students of all abilities to learn at their own pace.
Tools like Microsoft Teams makes it easy for teachers to run an entirely digital classroom and save valuable time and money and encourages students to learn from one another in a virtual discussion space while Skype for the Classroom extends the boundaries of any classroom, using video to bring in remote speakers and make more human connections around the world.
We know that tight budgets can sometimes force schools to choose devices with a stripped down experience and a limited lifespan. Over time, these devices cost schools more and do less to prepare students for the future.
With a broad collection of affordable Windows 10 and Windows 10 S PCs, we are giving schools industry-leading security, management and creativity tools, without the compromises of Chromebooks.
This combination of affordability and functionality - on a platform students will never outgrow – is how with Microsoft Education it’s possible to Unlock limitless learning.
We live in an amazing time of technological progress. Every aspect of our lives is being shaped by this digital transformation. However, with transformation comes disruption. There's growing concern over job growth, economic opportunity, and the world we are building for the next generation. So the real question is how can technology create more opportunity not for a few but for all. Addressing that question is core to our mission, to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. This is not just a set of words for us, but the thing we care deeply about. Our success is measured by others' success.
We live in an amazing time of educational progress too. Over the past few years we’ve been experiencing a fundamental and core learning shift. From passive understanding of information to active participation, the way in which educators teach and assess, and how students learn. How students and teachers capture content, use information and share knowledge are all rapidly changing.
We are under no illusion that technology alone is driving this education transformation. Dedicated administrators, great teachers, motivated students, involved parents and communities are the ones changing education. Technology is merely a tool to empower their creativity, their ingenuity.
Teachers are tasked with creating the conditions needed to allow students to ask good questions and research and apply answers instead of defining the problem and giving them the answer. Although technology integration may be desired, it is often secondary concern to teachers, especially for teachers just getting their footing. Given these expectations, teachers want technology that functions well in the classroom that makes their lives simpler and sparks student creativity.
Educational opportunity must be inclusive of everyone, not just a select few. This includes students with disabilities and different learning styles. All students must be given an opportunity to pursue their own dreams.
In summary, Microsoft Education can help achieve better learning outcomes, save teachers time, leaving them more time to engage with students and lower both the fiscal and management costs on devices, thus enabling schools to provide more students with access to technology.
Let’s take a closer look into each of these.
WHY
Student success is at the core of everything you do in education. Technology alone will not lead to better learning outcomes, but how teachers and students choose to use technology can have significant impact.
WHAT IT MEANS:
Sometimes technology is nice to have to enhance teaching and learning, sometimes it’s absolutely required to enable it. Microsoft Education provides tools that improves independence for students of all abilities especially those that are struggling readers or have a disability, for students learning English as their second language. But we also have tools for the other end of the spectrum as well, to help students work smarter and more efficiently.
And as more and more jobs take on a technical bent, it’s critical we ignite an interest in STEM in more and more students. We believe this means making STEM more accessible and fun for all students.
The same is true for unlocking creativity. We are all creators. When we create we learn. Microsoft Education has a set of tools and experiences that help teachers bring their lessons to life in new and exciting ways and for student to explore and learn in ways that unlock their own creativity and understanding.
Key message: Learning Tools has an immersive reader feature that can help improve people’s reading skills, including people with dyslexia, dysgraphia, ADHD, emerging readers or a combination of the broad range of unique student abilities.
The feature is available in the OneNote desktop app, Word Desktop, OneNote Online, Word Online, Office Lens, and Edge browser for ePub files. The immersive reader feature helps educators create more inclusive classrooms. And, students often have more success when they can de-clutter screen views, animations and background images. It helps promote concentration and aids in comprehension, such as:
A Read Aloud feature reads text out loud with simultaneous highlighting improves decoding, fluency, and comprehension while sustaining focus and attention.
A Text Spacing feature optimizes font spacing in a narrow column view to improve reading fluency for users who suffer from “visual crowding” issues.
A Syllabification feature shows the breaks between syllables to improve word recognition and decoding.
A Parts of Speech feature supports instruction and improves writing quality by identifying verbs, nouns, and adjectives.
To access these new Learning Tools in Word Online or OneNote Online, go to the View menu and click Immersive Reader. In addition, Learning Tools for Word 2016 has Learning Tools built into Read Mode.
The Immersive Reader features help everyone on any device improve their reading skills, including those with dyslexia, dysgraphia, ADHD, emerging readers or a combination of the broad range of unique student abilities.

Learning Tools are for everywhere you need to read (see more here: https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/microsoft_in_education/2016/10/13/inclusive-classrooms/)
The research about reading identifies three separate reading skills: decoding, fluency, and comprehension. (see more here: https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Learning-Tools-to-improve-reading-and-writing-skills-735fc6ea-21eb-401a-9293-4a481ef7e482?ui=en-US&rs=en-US&ad=US)
We talked about how impactful the Learning Tools are… We thought why can’t you use them everywhere?

WHY
Every moment a teacher spends away from teaching is a moment lost to learning.
WHAT IT MEANS:
Time is a valuable commodity for us all, but for teachers every minute in the classroom matters and every additional minute they have for teaching is beneficial for the students.
Microsoft Education brings together the richest set of tools and apps for classroom collaboration to help stay organized in the classroom, make announcements, push out assignments and handle the day-to-day business of the class.
We’ve made it easy to distribute content, even while giving accommodations to students with diverse needs, we’ve built ways to share student work with parents. We have connectors to learning management systems to make it easier to work with the technology you already have.
and we’re developing new ways to track and monitor student work so teachers have the data they need to properly direct students.
In addition students have everything they need for classroom participation in a single, digital hub that lets them keep track of all their school work, communicate, collaborate and connect with their peers and teachers.
In addition, the more a teacher can stay connected with other teachers and share best practices, lesson plans, and pedagogy outside of the classroom, that too is beneficial for the students. So we have tools specifically for professional learning communities and school staff.
All of this adds up to one thing. More time for teaching.
WHY
Every student, teacher, and school should have access to the best technology.
WHAT IT MEANS FOR STUDENTS:
We can level the playing field and ensure every student has the tools they need to succeed. That starts with efficient, affordable devices that reduce the administrative burden on teachers and IT departments and allow them to concentrate on what matters most: their students.
Key message: The improved Intune for Education is a cloud-based service that delivers easy setup and control of Windows 10 apps and devices in the classroom. Intune for Education is at the core of a modern platform to create the conditions for learning in the classroom. Microsoft’s cloud technologies can be deployed alongside or integrate easily with your existing infrastructure. The top feedback we have heard since launch a year ago has been better support for troubleshooting with Windows 10 devices managed by Intune for Education and scaling deployment for different sizes of districts.
Lets start with the one area where we have got consistent feedback from our customers and partners – how about an easier way to set up and manage devices?
In response, we created Intune for Education – taking a rock-solid product built on top of our commercial Intune offering and making it easier, customized for Education customers
Easy deployment: With the new Windows 10, it is easier than ever to set up a new PC, including very light-touch device configuration using a USB key
Simple enrollment: Bring devices under management simply by AAD joining, either through the Setup School PCs app & USB stick or Out Of Box Experience
Zero-touch management: Microsoft for Education and approved third-party apps, with appropriate settings applied to each enrolled device by default.
With the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, IT admins can now configure new settings like set WiFi profiles, enable Windows Automatic Redeployment and Power Settings via Intune for Education.
We heard a lot of feedback from customers about the need for more IT visibility and insights to inform device deployment & troubleshooting with Intune for Education. Given this, we have added a couple key features to help with this:
Search : Allows an admin to search for specific user/device and view user/device details page.
User & device details pages: Once you’ve found the user/device you can see which settings and apps should be applied and their deployment status for a user/device.
Also, as part of troubleshooting, administrators want to be able to see the “paper trail” of changes that were made, possibly by other admins, so they can act to fix any deployment issues, especially those pertaining to Windows security.
Audit Log for apps/settings changes on a group: Allows an admin to see which changes were made, by whom and when.
Windows Defender status reporting: Customers told us they liked Windows Defender protection but now you can see more detailed status on devices under Intune for Education management. We now include information on vulnerabilities detected and scan status,
Shared devices: Managed devices can be shared. Each user can get different settings/apps if required.
Designed for Education: Smart defaults for schools and the ability to target granular policies by device or user groups after syncing SIS data via School Data Sync
Scales to your environment with delegated administration from a district to a school level and bridging the gap between on-premise ConfigMgr deployments to modern cloud Intune management with co-management. Includes rights to the full enterprise-grade Intune console for cross-platform management.
IT admins at a district or system level often want to delegate administrator permissions and management visibility to school level administrators who just want to manage their school of devices. It can be complex for less technical administrators to assign these role-specific permissions to school level staff in the full Intune console, especially with large, decentralized IT staffs. With upcoming updates, IT admins can more easily delegate administration via Intune for Education with a new “School Administrator ” role.

Talk Track to customers:
One of the most common questions we get asked is ‘When should schools use Windows 10 S and when should they use Windows 10 Pro?’
This slide should help answer that question
One of the things that most people don’t know is that Windows 10 S is actually Windows 10 Pro in ‘S Mode’. It’s the same powerful underlying Windows 10 Pro operating system in both cases.
Windows 10 S has an added layer on top of Windows 10 Pro to streamline it for security and to drive device performance. It essentially only allows those apps to be loaded which are on the Windows Store. Since all the apps that are on the store are verified by Microsoft, there is an added layer of security for customers as well as devices perform the same on Day 1000 as on Day 1. This is a big benefit for schools who don’t have to waste time and resources re-imaging the devices at the end of every school year.
Windows 10 S is essentially a ‘No-Risk’ choice for schools.
You can start with Windows 10 S to experience the performance or switch for FREE to Windows 10 Pro if you need to install apps or browsers that are not supported.
No matter what version of Windows you chose, you will always have the power and creativity to drive better student outcomes
Some quotes from a school that deployed Windows 10 S devices
“As a teacher, I know that I can rely on the security and anti-virus safeguards built into Windows 10 S—it's safer for my students than the tablets and iPads we were using previously. My students can only download Microsoft-verified apps from the Microsoft Store and this is important to me. I didn't have this same assurance with Google Apps.”
“The security and anti-virus protections built into Windows 10 S are very important to us. We don't have to worry about a student accidentally downloading something they shouldn't, Windows 10 S security keeps our devices and our students safer.”
“Our students experience faster performance on their HP Windows 10 S devices than on the tablets and iPads they were using previously.”
“Deploying Windows 10 S devices has given our students an easy pathway to using the cloud. We use Office 365 for document creation and document sharing. Everything is saved in the cloud and we don't have to worry about losing anything.”

Every user will be able to use the search function to quickly find and navigate to individual assignments as well. Learn more about managing assignments on the Teams mobile app.
Join Team using code - Teachers can now easily invite students to join a class by giving them a join code, hence helping them save time. In addition to Class Teams, this capability will also be available for Staff and PLC Teams for educators to easily invite their co-educators for team collaboration.
Use Team as Template - Educators will now have an easy way to reuse their previous and existing Teams. When clicking on "create a team", you will get an option to create a team using an existing team as template, allowing you to replicate a team and giving you customization options on what to copy over, from channels, tabs, team settings, apps, and even users.
Translate conversation - On-demand translation allows users to translate any message in chat or in a team channel into the native language that their Teams app is configured in.
Decimal grading: We know teachers provide feedback in a variety of ways. With the addition of decimal grading, teachers creating an assignment in Microsoft Teams for Education can set a points system on any number-based scale including whole numbers of 100. For example: 3.7/4.0. Learn more about creating assignments.
OneNote:
One of the most popular additions to Class Notebooks has been the ability to enable assignment and grade integration with over 35 Learning Management Systems (LMS) and Student Information Systems (SIS). We have added two significant additions to this list:
Capita SIMS – assignment and grade integration with Class Notebooks
Powerschool PowerTeacher Pro -assignment and grade integration with Class Notebooks.
Assignment and grade integration: We’re bringing these capabilities into the OneNote Windows 10 app, OneNote Online and OneNote iPad. OneNote Mac integration will roll out later this spring.
Desmos integration: We are partnering to enable the popular Desmos interactive math calculators to be embedded directly on to the OneNote page. A list of all 3rd party embeddable apps is here.
Page Locking: the #1 request for OneNote Class Notebooks has been the ability for a teacher to make a student page read-only (“locking” the page) after leaving feedback or grading. We will be enabling this page-locking capability for stand-alone Class Notebooks, as well as OneNote assignments in Teams, which will allow the page to locking at a specific date and time.
Minecraft: Education Edition, Chemistry Update:
The Chemistry Update adds a chemistry resource pack to all versions of Minecraft: Education Edition (Windows 10 and Mac OS).
The Chemistry Resource Pack lets teachers utilize the familiar world of Minecraft to provide a safe and fun learning environment that introduces students to basic chemistry concepts, such as combining elements into compounds and deconstructing real-world materials. Adds four new crafting tables, and allows players to use chemistry to create compounds and new Minecraft items like underwater torches, helium balloons, and glow sticks.
Educators are encouraged to use the Chemistry Resource Pack to explore game-based learning concepts and teaching strategies through Minecraft: Education Edition, leveraging the curricular content and support provided by the Minecraft Education community.
The Chemistry Resource Pack is appropriate for a range of ages and grades, with free lessons created by Board-certified educators available for primary and secondary levels.
The Chemistry Resource will be available through Minecraft: Education Edition as an in-game resource pack. All Windows 10 users will receive automatic update at the next login. Note that Mac/iOS users will have to reinstall Minecraft: Education Edition to access the updated version.
Windows 10 Fall Creators Update:
Microsoft Edge: Microsoft Edge is becoming a browser built for learning. The Windows 10 Creators Update introduced Microsoft Edge as a default ePub reader with basic Learning Tools capabilities. This update adds the ability to be a PDF book reader, with Read Aloud. Read Aloud is available for web content, with text size and page theme available for Reading View.
Students and teachers with ink enabled devices will be able to annotate directly on PDF books and documents, and take text notes on ePub books. Additional Microsoft Edge PDF capabilities have been upgraded too, such as form fill support, and the ability to rotate your documents.
Photos: The Photos app brings new functionality that introduces students to visual storytelling. It helps them learn the vital skills of visual communication and digital storytelling through an easy to use inbox Windows application. This new functionality was first made available as part of the Windows Insider Program as an update to the Photos app. Recently, the Photos app team started rolling out this functionality to Windows 10 1703 and newer operating systems.
Windows 10 automatic redeployment: Windows 10 automatic redeployment streamlines end of year device reset for schools. Administrators can easily start the process with a simple key stroke on the lock screen, entering their admin credentials. Once the process completes, Windows 10 automatic redeployment will have: removed personal files/settings, removed apps, reconnected to WiFi, reapplied provisioning package, preserved MDM, AAD enrollment, and local admin accounts; ending up at the lock screen when complete and ready for the next year. A new policy has been created to allow Windows 10 automatic redeployment to be used on devices managed by IT within schools.
LEGO:
Together with LEGO® Education, we’ll be offering a new free online Hacking STEM lesson plan that has students use the Pythagorean Theorem to explore and measure topography in 2D/3D space. Acting as environmental surveyors and engineers, students build tools with LEGO® bricks or cardboard to create and visualize an initial transportation plan for the development of an island national park in Excel. They then bring their national park to life by adding topographic elements in 3D paint.
