La Colección Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, una de las más importantes de arte
contemporáneo a nivel mundial, llega a España por primera vez presentando
algunas de sus últimas adquisiciones.
113 obras que combinan video instalaciones, pintura, escultura, fotografía,
tapices, dibujo y serigrafía.
Damien Hirst, Anish Kapoor, los hermanos Chapman, Mauricio Cattelan, Gary
Hume o Douglas Gordon, entre los 69 artistas presentes.
El título de la muestra alude a la contemplación de El Greco y reúne una
panorámica de los últimos treinta años de arte.
“Espíritu y Espacio”, es el título de la exposición que, del 9 de febrero al 29 de
abril de 2011, organiza la Fundación Banco Santander en la Sala de Arte de la Ciudad
Financiera de Boadilla.
113 piezas y 69 artistas de veinte países distintos, que no sólo conforman una
selección de lo más destacado de la Colección Sandretto Re Rebaudengo –una de las
más importantes del mundo- y del arte contemporáneo de los últimos treinta años,
sino que refleja también su esencia en un espectacular montaje que dialoga
continuamente con el público a través de todas y cada una de sus propuestas en los
casi tres mil metros cuadrados de ámbito expositivo de la Sala de Arte Santander.

La muestra trae hasta Madrid las últimas e importantes adquisiciones de la
Colección, entre las que destacan el tapiz Still, Untitled de Pae White (2010) y
Landscape with Houses (2009) de James Casebere, junto a otras piezas de gran
trascendencia como Bidibidobidiboo de Maurizio Cattelan, Love is Great de Damien
Hirst o Zidane. A 21st Century Portrait de Douglas Gordon y Philippe Parreno —vídeo
coproducido por la Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo— que podrán ser
contempladas por primera vez en España.
En palabras del Comisario de la exposición, Francesco Bonami, la idea de la
muestra “surgió como una inspiración al observar las obras de El Greco pertenecientes
a la Colección Santander”. En opinión de Bonami espacio y espíritu/lo terrenal y lo
celeste, constituyen los ejes centrales de la pintura del artista cretense, y ésa fue la
razón del título homónimo para la muestra, así que “elegimos las obras de la Colección
Sandretto que mejor reflejaran el modo en que el espíritu y el espacio permanecen en
las raíces del arte contemporáneo”. Bonami también resalta el referente indiscutible
de Goya acerca de las manifestaciones violentas de la naturaleza humana en obras
como las de los hermanos Chapman, por ejemplo y su obra Cyber iconic man (1996).
Son 120 fotografías, 22 esculturas, 16 cuadros, 14 dibujos, 5 instalaciones y 4
vídeo instalaciones así como un tapiz y una obra de serigrafía. Dieciocho artistas
estadounidenses, doce italianos y otros doce del Reino Unido, siete alemanes, cinco
iberoamericanos, tres japoneses, dos israelíes, dos polacos, y otras nacionalidades
hasta componer un crisol de casi veinte países y setenta artistas, tres de ellos
ganadores del Premio Turner como Anish Kapoor, Damien Hirst y Douglas Gordon,
además de muchos nominados como Gary Hume, Steven Pippin, Yinka Shonibare o los
hermanos Chapman. La obra más antigua de la muestra es Untitled (1973) de Charles
Ray siendo la más reciente la de Pae White, Still, Untitled (2010).
La exposición se estructura, al igual que un triángulo, en tres puntos cardinales
situados sobre tres vídeos, que son según Bonami, “diferentes rituales de la mayoría
de edad en la sociedad contemporánea”. El primer vértice es San Sebastián, de Fiona
Tan con sus jóvenes japonesas; el segundo lo forman el grupo de afroamericanos en
las calles desiertas de Los Ángeles en Electric Heart de Doug Aitken; y el último vídeo
es A 21st Portrait, de Douglas Gordon y Philippe Parreno –coproducido por la

Fundación Sandretto Re Rebaudengo-, que retrata al futbolista Zidane como una figura
mística que practica el moderno rito de un partido de fútbol.
En una época en la que el espacio y el espíritu de las creencias se han quedado
fragmentados, esta exposición intenta sugerir que, “a través del arte, el espíritu y el
espacio pueden mantenerse unidos, reforzarse mutuamente y determinar el papel que
desempeñamos cada uno”.
LA COLECCIÓN SANDRETTO RE REBAUDENGO
En 1995 nació la Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, fruto del deseo, en
palabras de su fundadora y propietaria, Patrizia Sandretto (Presidenta de la Fundación
Sandretto Re Rebaudengo) de “apoyar e impulsar a los artistas jóvenes y de acercar el
arte contemporáneo a un público cada vez más amplio”. La Colección se ha construido
recogiendo obras de artistas antes de que éstos alcanzaran notoriedad en el panorama
internacional. Actualmente alberga casi 2000 obras de artistas que han trazado la
historia del arte contemporáneo desde los años 80 hasta nuestros días, entre los
cuales destacan Doug Aitken, Matthew Barney, Vanessa Beecroft, los hermanos
Chapman, Maurizio Cattelan, Thomas Demand, Andreas Gursky, Damien Hirst, Gary
Hume, Anish Kapoor, Mike Kelley, Barbara Kruger, Sarah Lucas, Esko Mannikko,
Reinhard Mucha, Gabriel Orozco, Rudolf Stingel, Cindy Sherman o Rosmarie Trockel
entre otros.
Muchos de ellos han expuesto sus obras en las instituciones más importantes y
actualmente se los disputan los principales museos y coleccionistas del mundo. Desde
el nacimiento de la Colección, la atención de Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo se ha
dirigido a los jóvenes artistas italianos y extranjeros. Viajando y visitando exposiciones,
museos, galerías de arte y estudios de artistas, observa el contexto contemporáneo y
las nuevas producciones. Desde el principio la Colección se desarrolla con método
riguroso, y está organizada temáticamente: arte inglés, arte italiano, arte de género
femenino, arte de Los Ángeles, fotografía. Desde 1992 a 1995 la Colección tiene una
función puramente privada, aunque el deseo de mostrarla al público se concreta en la
primera exposición que, en 1994, reúne a dieciséis artistas ingleses entre los cuales

Tony Cragg, Richard Deacon, Damien Hirst, Anish Kapoor, Julian Opie en una
exposición preparada en un sitio industrial en Sant’Antonino di Susa y después
solicitada en 1995 por la Galleria Civica di Modena para el palacete de los jardines.
Desde 1995 la Colección es tutelada por la Fundación Sandretto Re Rebaudengo
que promueve el acceso del público a través de exposiciones en Guarene d’Alba y
luego en Turín. Desde 1995 Francesco Bonami es el encargado de los programas de la
Fundación. Las obras adquiridas se prestan a distintos museos e instituciones
culturales italianas y europeas. En febrero de 1996, el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo
del Castillo de Rivoli invita a Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo y a otros coleccionistas
a presentar una parte de su colección en la exposición Coleccionismo en Turín. Patrizia
Sandretto Re Rebaudengo elige presentar algunas obras de arte de género femenino.
La creatividad de este tipo de arte se seguirá desarrollando en la Colección y será
objeto de gran atención en los años sucesivos. Desde 1997 el Palazzo Re Rebaudengo
en Guarene de Alba se convierte en el principal centro de exposición de la Fundación.

The Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Collection, one of the most important
contemporary art collections at a world level, arrives for its first time in Spain,
exhibiting some of its latest acquisitions.
113 works of art that combine video installations, paintings, sculpture,
photography, tapestries and serigraphy.
Damien Hirst, Anish Kapoor, the Chapman brothers, Mauricio Cattelan, Gary
Hume or Douglas Gordon, figure amongst the 69 artists represented in the
exhibition.
The title of the exhibition comes from contemplating the “El Greco” and gathers
a view of the last thirty years of art.
“Spirit and Space”, is the title of the exhibition that Fundación Banco Santander
organises at the Santander Art Gallery at Boadilla’s Financial City from February 9th
until April 29th.

of the most important in the world- and in contemporary art of the last thirty years,
that also reflects its essence in a spectacular mounting that establishes continually a
dialogue with the public through all of its works in its nearly three thousand square
metres of Santander’s Exhibition Room exhibitive sphere.
The exhibit brings to Madrid most important and latest acquisitions of the
Collection, amongst which stand out Pae White’s Still, untitled (2010) and James
Casebere’s Landscape with Houses (2009), together with other pieces of great
significance such as Maurizio Cattelan’s Bidibidobidiboo, Damien Hirst’s Love is Great
or Douglas Gordon and Philippe Parreno’s Zidane. A 21st Century Portrait—video co-
produced by the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo— that will be the able to be
gazed at in Spain for the first time.
In Francesco Bonami’s words, the exhibition’s curator the idea of the exhibition
“emerged as an inspiration when observing Santander’s collection “El Greco’s” works
of art”. In Bonami’s opinion, space and spirit/the earthly and the heavenly constitute
the central axes of the paintings of the Cretan artist, and that was the reason for the
homonym title for the exhibition, so that is “why we chose the works of art from
Sandretto’s Collection that best reflected the way in which the sprit and the space
remain in the roots of contemporary art”. Bonami also highlights Goya’s
unquestionable referent about nature’s violent manifestations in works such as the
Chapman’s brother’s Cyber iconic man (1996) and the work of the 18th century painter.
120 photographs, 22 sculptures, 16 paintings, 14 drawings, 5 installations and 4
video installations as well as a tapestry and a work of serigraphy make up the
exhibition. Eighteen artists from United States, 5 Latin American, 3 Japanese, 2 from
Israel, 2 Polish and other nationalities constitute a meeting point of nearly twenty
countries and 70 artists, 3 of them award-winners such as Premio Turner such as Anish
Kapoor, Damien Hirst and Douglas Gordon, as well as many more nominated Gary
Hume, Steven Pippin, Yinka Shonibare or the Chapman brothers. Charles Ray’s Untitled
(1973) is the exhibition’s most ancient work of art, whilst the most recent one is Pae
White’s, Still, Untitled (2010).
The exhibition structure itself, as in a triangle, in three cardinal points, that are
according to Bonami “different rituals in the adulthood in today’s society”. Fiona Tan’s

San Sebastián with its young Japanese women constitute the first vertex; Doug
Aitken’s Electric Heart with its Afro-American group in Los Angeles’ deserted streets
make up the second one and Douglas Gordon and Philippe Parreno’s A 21st Portrait, –
a video co- produced by the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo-, that portraits the
football player Zidane as mystic figure practising the modern rite of a football match
forms the third vertex.
In an age in which the space and the spirit as well as the beliefs are going
through a process of fragmentation, this exhibition tries to suggest that “trough the
art, the spirit and the space can keep together, strengthen one another and establish
the role that each one of us plays”.
THE SANDRETTO RE REBAUDENGO COLLECTION
As Patrizia Sandretto (Founder and owner of the Foundation) stated, the
Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo was born in 1995, fruit of her desire, of
“supporting and propelling young artists and making contemporary art closer to a
public bigger and bigger”. The collection has built itself gathering works of artist
before they became well-known at an international level. Nowadays it hosts over 200
works of art that have traced the history of contemporary art from the eighties until
today, amongst which Doug Aitken, Matthew Barney, Vanessa Beecroft, the Chapman
brothers, Maurizio Cattelan, Thomas Demand, Andreas Gursky, Damien Hirst, Gary
Hume, Anish Kapoor, Mike Kelley, Barbara Kruger, Sarah Lucas, Esko Mannikko,
Reinhard Mucha, Gabriel Orozco, Rudolf Stingel, Cindy Sherman or Rosmarie Trockel
from many other stand out.
Many of them have exhibited their works of art in very important institutions
and that, at present the most important museums and world collectors fight for. From
the beginning, Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo turned her attention to young artists
from Italy and outside her own country. It is through travelling and visiting museums,
exhibitions, art galleries and artist’s studios that she observes the contemporary
context and the new productions. From the first moment the Collection develops itself
rigorously and it’s organised by subject matter: English art, Italian art, feminine genre

art, art from Los Angeles, photography. From 1992 to 1995 the Collection has merely a
private function, although the desire of showing it to the public takes shape in a first
exhibition that in 1994 gathers sixteen English artists amongst which Tony Cragg,
Richard Deacon, Damien Hirst, Anish Kapoor, Julian Opie stand out in an exhibition in
an industrial venue in Sant’Antonino di Susa and requested afterwards in 1995 by the
Galleria Civica di Modena for the small palace in the gardens.
Since 1995 the Collection is guarded by Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo
that promotes the public access to its exhibitions in Guarene d’Alba and in Turin. It is
the same year, that Francesco Bonami is named responsible of the Foundation’s
programmes. The works of art purchased are lent to different cultural Italian and
Europena institutions. In February 1996, the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo del
Castillo de Rivoli invites Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo and other collectors to put
forward part of their collection in the exhibition Collecting in Turin. Patrizia Sandretto
Re Rebaudengo chooses to exhibit some works of feminine genre. The creativity of this
kind of art will continue to develop itself in the collection and will be object of great
attention in the coming years. Since the 1997 the Palazzo Re Rebaudengo en Guarene
de Alba becomes the Fondazione’s main exhibition centre.
