2. The first shot after the credits is a long shot of the approaching homicide squad. At this
point the narrative also starts, truly beginning the story.
3. This next shot is a high angle shot of the homicide squad as they pull up. This gives us a
good view of the cars and the situation.
4. The camera follows the men with a pan as they rush to the pool, it stays in a high angle
shot. To show emotion and to get a better view.
5. Here the camera cuts to a closer shot of the men and the body, rather than zooming in.
The cut to zoom shows the importance of the body.
6. Again the camera switches shot, this time to a low angled shot from inside the pool itself.
This gives us a good view of the man’s face.
7. The light reflected in the pool becomes the only thing visible as this scene fades into the
next, acting as a sort of graphic match to bridge it to the next scene.
8. The next scene fades in from the previous, and is much lighter than the one before. It’s
again a high angled long shot of the street below, showing life moving along as normal.
9. The camera pans over to the window of the apartment. Shows palm trees which are
iconic to LA.
10. Camera zooms into the window after a cut zoom and shows man writing on his
typewriter as he narrates. Typical film noir character archetype.
