a gameful solution to a testing problem
         By Carolyn Mee
“Oh the places you’ll GO”
                   -Dr. Seuss
When you’re on a journey it’s the
people you meet along the way who
        define your journey.
WHO states that Indigenous Australians
have some of the worst levels of ear
         infections in the world.
                                       (Couzos, Melcalf & Murray 1999)

Clearly there is a situation and any help addressing it would
                          be of value.
develop a game to test for hearing loss in
           preschool children
collaboration

My journey led me to the door of the
National Acoustic Laboratories and the
forward thinking Director or Research
       Professor Harvey Dillon.
Need - implement a universal hearing
screening test for all children entering school.

270 000 children start school for the first
time each year

Barrier - Time, expertise and cost prevent mass
testing of children through traditional means
Challenge identified

Change Required

Game on!
You will come to a place
where the streets are not marked.
  Some windows are lighted.
  But mostly they’re darked….
Do you dare to stay out?
Do you dare to go in?
    How much can you lose?
    How much can you win?
         Simple it’s not. -Dr. Seuss
Developing a game with its roots based in
science is a challenge.
Step 1: Understand the problem

3 different types of hearing issues
       • conductive hearing loss
       • sensorineural loss
       • central auditory processing disorder
Developing a game with its roots based in
science is a challenge.
Step 2: Understand the solution

       - different types of hearing tests
       • Visual reinforcement audiometry (VRA)
       • Play audiometry
       • Pure tone audiometry
Developing a game with its roots based in
science is a challenge.
Step 3: Translate the solution
Testing (tone, speech) +
game design principles (engagement, anticipation, reward cycles, rhythm) =
        captivating and effective hearing test
audio stimulus followed Wrangling sound systems with
by visual reward a simple calibration step
Mechanics Story

Good Results but not quite there yet !
So…
You’re off to Great Places!
    Today is your day!
 Your mountain is waiting
  So... get on your way!
                        -Dr. Seuss
