THIS PPT IS ABOUT CHARACTERISTICS, SIZE, PROPERTY AND FORMATION OF THE MOON.
IT TELLS US ABOUT ALL ITS PROPERTIES WITH PROPER EXPLANATION AND WITH IMAGES

DETAILED INFORMATION AND FACTS ABOUT THE MOON
1.
2.
3. • The moon revolves around the Earth in about one month
(27 days 8 hours)
• As it does so, its position changes, relative to the
stars.
• It rotates around its own axis in the same amount of
time.
• Since there are 360 degrees in a circle, the Moon
moves 360 / 27.3 or 13.2 degrees per day relative to
the stars, which is just over half a degree per hour,
and approximately equal to its apparent size.
• This means that from night to night, the Moon moves a
little more than one hand-width to the East (the
direction of its motion around the Earth) relative to
the stars, and from hour to hour, it moves about one
diameter to the East, the stars.
4.
5. The moon's diameter is
3,476 km, the Earth is
12,756 km in diameter.
The circumference of the
moon is 10,864 km. The
circumference of the
earth at the equator is
40,075 km.
The mass of moon is
7.3477×1022 kg.
Whereas the mass of Earth is about 5.97219×1024 kg .
The Earth’s mass is about 81 times more than the mass
of moon.

8. The moon has no atmosphere according to scientists.
On the moon, the sky is always appears dark, even
on the bright side (because there is no atmosphere).
The moon is always silent because it has no
atmosphere; therefore no medium is present for
sound to travel, as sound can travel only when a
medium is present for it to travel.
The temperature on the Moon varies from -233°C
at nighttime to 163°C during the day because the
Moon has no atmosphere to block some of the Sun's
rays or to help trap heat at night, its temperature
varies greatly between day and night.
Elements that have been detected
include sodium and potassium, produced by
sputtering, which are also found in the atmospheres
of Mercury and Io; helium from the solar wind;
and argon, radon and polonium outgassed after their
creation by radioactive decay within the crust and
mantle.

10. The surface of the moon is scarred by millions of
large bowl-shaped cavities called impact craters,
caused by asteroids, comets, and meteorites.
There is no atmosphere on the moon to help protect it
from bombardment from potential impactors (most
objects from space burn up in our atmosphere).
Also, there is no erosion (wind or precipitation) and
little geologic activity to wear away these craters, so
they remain unchanged until another new impact
changes it.
The largest crater on the moon is the Aitken Basin.
Found on the far side of the Moon, the diameter of
this impact crater is 2,500 kilometres wide and is the
largest, deepest and oldest crater not only on the
Moon but also in the Solar System.

13. The first human-made object to reach the surface of the Moon
was the Soviet Union's Luna 2 mission, on 13 September 1959.
The USSR accomplished the first soft landings and took the first
pictures from the lunar surface on the Luna 9 and Luna
13 missions. The U.S. followed with five unmanned Surveyor soft
landings.
The Soviet Union achieved the first unmanned lunar soil sample
return with the Luna 16 probe on 24 September 1970.
The Luna 17 and Luna 21 were successful unmanned rover
missions.
Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) performed a
controlled crash impact with its Moon Impact Probe (MIP) on 14
November 2008. The MIP was an ejected probe from the
Indian Chandrayaan-1 lunar orbiter and performed remote
sensing experiments during its descent to the lunar surface
The Chinese lunar orbiter Chang'e 1 executed a controlled crash
onto the surface of the Moon on 1 March 2009. The rover
mission Chang'e 3 was launched on 1 December 2013 and soft-
landed on 14 December.
