Background on Country and
Region
Bangladesh is a highly density populated country. Crisis of safe
drinking water is a major problem in Bangladesh especially in Sylhet
region. Sylhet is situated beside the Himalayan region of India. A
large number of people are drinking water from nearest river, pond,
channel, collecting water far away from their residence. The
inhabitants of this locality are ultra-poor situated in Barkhola village
under Barlekha upazila of Moulvibazar district. Fishing and
Agriculture are primary occupation of the people.
Introduction There were no tube wells for this 50 households ( students &
teacher) and people are getting safe drinking water from others and
union WATSAN committee recommend this area to install one Hand
pump.
Access to safe drinking water and improved sanitation is essential for
health. This is also human right. Lack of pure and safe water has a
negative impact on economic development. People suffer from
many kinds of water borne diseases. To collect fresh water; they are
wasting time to cross a distant place or waiting in a queue, dropping
out of schools increases as they have to fetch potable water.
Field Notes A 640 feet Depth hand pump has been installed in Barkhola village
under Barlekha upazila of Moulvibazar district. Community has
contributed Tk.2000 for this purpose, community also carry these
materials from Muslim Aid office by own cost. They also take care of
the equipment’s by following maintenance committee provided us
information which was needed for the project.
Sustainability An orientation on hygiene promotion has been held in this
community. Beneficiaries from all the households were
participated in the session. Main agendas were repair &
maintenance & hygiene promotion, cleanliness of platform.
All the households contribute money to install the tube well.
Men and women trained on community managed water supply.
2. A maintenance committee has been formed& orented to take
care.
Union WATSAN committee members will take care through
supervision & monitoring.
