Darfur Crisis; Associated mental health Problems among Internally Displaced Women

—In many cultures in India, womanhood is defined through motherhood and infertile women usually carry the blame for the couple inability to conceive. A childless woman is stigmatized and sometimes not allowed to participate in various auspicious ceremonies, particularly those involving childbirth. The present study was undertaken in S.M.S. Medical College, Jaipur, Rajasthan to find out the factors contributing to infertility and the health seeking behavior of infertile women. A hospital based observational study was carried out in year 2017 on eligible women attending OPD of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Mahila Chikitsalaya, S.M.S. Medical College Jaipur. A total 1000 eligible women were recruited using systematic random sampling and interviewed using a predesigned and pretested questionnaire. A total of 119 women (11.9%) were found to be infertile. Age of women, caste, residence, education status of women, occupation, family size and socioeconomic status were found to be significantly associated with infertility (P<0.05). Lower age of women, OBC caste, urban residence, less family size, lesser education status of women, housewives and middle socioeconomic status were found to have significantly more infertile females than their counterparts. Age of women, type of family and religion were not found to be associated with infertility (P >0.05). Improving awareness about infertility and its management could help reduce the burden and its social implications.

Migraine is the most common problem affecting large population, with prevalence frequency 10-12 %. This study was conducted to evaluate the prevalence of migraine in a low income community in Karachi from June-Oct, 2013. Three hundred and seven participants were involved in this study. For this purpose cross-sectional community based questionnaire was designed in accordance with the diagnostic criteria given by International Headache Society. Data collection was carried out by personal visit to patients and through clinics. It was observed that females (65.5%) are more affected from migraine then male. 32.9% housewives reported that they are suffering from migraine. This medical problem is common among youngsters (38.1%) than old citizens. Employees working in different organizations (39.7%), were found to be mostly affected from migraine then self employed persons. Majority of the migraine patients (41%) reported that they are suffering from common symptoms including: photophobia, phonophobia, nausea, vomiting etc. Dietary habits of individuals were found to be closely associated with migraine such as use of caffeine, chocolate are prominent; and their use is common among 75% patients cumulatively. It was evaluated that certain disease conditions i.e. stress (33.6%), depression (22.1%) and anxiety (18.9%) are more common among sufferers of migraine.

Abstract: This cross-sectional study sought to establish factors influencing occurrence of diabetes mellitus in Shieywe location Kakamega County. Methods: Data was collected through face-to-face interview with selected respondents by a structured questionnaire. Results: 327 respondents took part in the survey, of which 135 (41.3%) were females and 192 (58.7%) were males. Only 23 (7.6%) of the respondents had attained tertiary education (post-secondary education). 91(29.9%) of the respondents had attained secondary education. Most of the respondents, 190 (62.5%) had acquired primary education. Although bicycling exercise is attributed to be a means of preventing diabetes mellitus but those who did were 13 (4.3%) as those who did not were 291 (95.7%). The non-diabetics seeking diabetes medical assistance who covered less than a kilometer to reach a health facility were 73 (24%), as those who covered between 2-5 kilometers being 161 (53%) and those who covered more than 6 kilometers were 70 (23%) to attend scheduled clinics and medical attention. Conclusion: most of diabetics covered more than 6 Kms and 2-5kms to reach a health facility. The Ministry of Health should provide comprehensive services for diabetes mellitus management at level two health facilities to make diabetes mellitus services accessible and affordable.

—Reproductive health development depends on the menstrual hygiene in adolescence. Half of all mental health disorders in adulthood start during adolescence. Drug, alcohol and tobacco use is major concern in this group. The present study was conducted to study the reproductive health, mental health and various addictions in urban adolescents. This cross sectional study was conducted among 506 adolescents from standard 9 th and 10 th in a high school in Margao city of South Goa district in year 2015. Study participants were sampled by census method and interviewed by using a pretested, structured questionnaire. The mean age of study participants i.e. in girls it was 16.30 years & in boys it was observed 16.43 years. 85.4% of the study participants experienced one of the feelings of being anxious, sad, irritable or stressed, 74.4% of the study participants experienced feelings suggestive of psychosomatic disorder and 48.4% participants felt they were good for nothing. 58.1% had normal cycles of 21-35 days while 30.7% and 11.2% of the girls had cycles of < 21 days & 36-60 days respectively. 49.2% experienced mild symptoms of dysmenorrhoea, equal percentage experienced moderate symptoms and 1.6% experienced severe dysmenorrhoea. 40.4% had curdy white vaginal discharge, 5.5% had greenish yellow discharge and 19.8% had blood stained vaginal discharge. 5.5% of the adolescents smoked.1.2% of the participants chewed Gutkha. 26.5% had consumed alcohol & 3.8% had tried drugs. The study shows that adolescents face various problems which need to be addressed.

China's Initiatives of Recovery from the 2008 Wenchuan Earthquake

Dementia is one of the most devastating illnesses affecting older persons. According to a survey from the Myers-JDC-Brookdale Institute, approximately 5% of Israeli elderly living in the community have advanced dementia. This first study of the care of older people with advanced dementia in Israel reveals a wide range of unmet health and social service needs. It points to the need for a comprehensive policy for developing services to improve the quality of care and reduce the burden on the families. The findings are contributing to the implementation of the national strategic plan for addressing the challenges of dementia, currently being implemented by the Ministry of Health, and to a new national program for palliative care for people with terminal illnesses, which is in the planning stages as a joint initiative of the Ministry of Health, JDC-ESHEL, and MJB. The study was funded with the assistance of the Helen Daniels Bader Fund of Bader Philanthropies of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

:The social support emphasize as the support given to any person in a troublesome or burdensome situation by family members, relatives as well as resources exerted by social connections, is effective in promoting physical health and feeling oneself good. The present study consisted of 300 caregivers of persons with cancer was selected based on simple random sampling, and with inclusion and exclusion criteria. Those patients satisfying the inclusion and exclusion criteria and attending both outpatient and inpatient services of cancer specialty hospital in KIDWAI Bangalore, Karnataka were selected randomly. The data was collected from the patients & caregivers of persons living with cancer who fulfill the inclusion/exclusion criteria were taken up for the study after their consent. Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (Zimet et al, 1998) was administered to understand Perceived Social Support. The interviews and the instruments were administered by research experts.The Results suggest that there were poor social support found in caregivers of married, female, belong to rural domicile, illiterate, and,caregivers who were not heard about the treatment of cancer.

Abstract—Spiritual health is not given its due importance since long time. But nowadays modern medicine is seen in relation to spiritual health and studies were conducted to find out its effect in various diseases. So this study was conducted on elderly aimed to assess the spiritual health and its association with psycho wellness. For study purpose, 30 cluster technique to identify houses with elderly (≥60 years) in Municipal Corporation area of Jaipur City. After collecting general information Spiritual Health Assessment Scale (SHAS) was used to assess spiritual health and Modified Mini Screen (MMS) was used to assess psycho-wellness in elderly. Data were anlysed and inferred by Chi-square test and ANOVA with Post-hoc Tukey test. Majority of elderly were having poor spiritual health and this spiritual health was strongly associated with psycho-wellness in elderly. Poorer the spiritual health of elderly leads to poorer the psycho-wellness in elderly.

Tangible Needs and External Stressors Faced by Chinese American Families with a Member Having Schizophrenia Winnie Kung This article examines the tangible needs and external stressors experienced by Chinese American families with a member living with schizophrenia, in the context of a six-month pilot study of family psychoeducation. Therapists’ notes from 117 family and group sessions were analyzed. The families expressed concerns regarding housing, finance, work, study, and the shortage of bilingual psychosocial services. Interacting with government offices and social services agencies caused anxiety and frustration, partly due to the high stakes involved given their low socioeconomic status, and partly due to the bureaucracy. As immigrants, study participants had needs for language translation, knowledge about resources, and advo- cacy by case managers. This study also highlights the importance of interventions beyond the micro individual level to the mezzo and macro levels, where changes in organizations and policies are necessary. KEY WORDS: caregivers; Chinese Americans; environmental stressors; ethnic sensitivity; schizophrenia This study aims to address the knowledge gap in understanding the challenges faced by Chinese American families with a member living with schizophrenia in relation to their tangible needs and external stressors from the environment. I conducted this research in the context of an intervention study of family psychoeducation that I previously developed and pilot-tested as an ethnic-sensitive program for Chinese Americans ( Kung, Tseng, Wang, Hsu, & Chen, 2012). Family psychoeducation has been proven effective in reducing caregiver stress and the relapse rate of individuals with schizophrenia ( Jewell, Downing, & McFarlane, 2009; Lefley, 2010; McFarlane, Dixon, Lukens, & Lucksted, 2003). The intervention protocols focus on educating the families about the nature of the illness, promoting better communication, and helping family members re- solve conflicts ( Anderson, Reiss, & Hogarty, 1986; McFarlane, 2002) to reduce “expressed emotions” such as criticism and overinvolvement, which highly predict relapses ( Butzlaff & Hooley, 1998; Hooley, 2007; Leff & Vaughn, 1985; Marom, Munitz, Jones, Weizman, & Hermesh, 2005). Few studies had been conducted with Chinese American families, many of whom face unique challenges due to their immigrant status and cultural values ( Kung, 2003). To more thoroughly understand the stresses experienced by these families so as to better meet their needs and to refine the family psychoeducation pro- tocol, a qualitative inquiry was conducted using the clinicians’ session notes from the intervention study. Whereas the family psychoeducation model in its original design focused on resolving the psychological and relational issues within the families, this investigation noted that these families’ struggles were closel.

Background: Mental Health is responsible for 13% of global morbidity, and is a priority according to World Health Organization which predicts a duplication of this frequency by 2020. The cult of performance and the quest for maximum profit have led to the emergence of new types of diseases in societies such as professional exhaustion or burnout. The analysis of factors promoting burnout showed that this syndrome is primarily related to chronic stress. Studies in several countries, mostly Western, have showed its importance. This study has aimed to assess burnout in the military hospitalof Ouakam. Method: It was a qualitative study conducted among Ouakam Military Hospital workers in 2012. The sampling was complete and the target was made by all hospital workers: technical, administrative and support staff. Participation was free and voluntary. The collection tool consisted of Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) on socio-demographic characteristics and criteria of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and personal achievement. As suggested by Maslach, burnout was first determined for each criterion; then their combination enabled to determine the overall burnout. Results: A total of 66 individuals participated in the study. The average age was 34.5 years, sex ratio1.64; Married 57.6% and singles 42.4%. About 94% had a level of education equal to or higher than secondary school. Paramedics were 78.8%, support staff 13.6%. Emotional exhaustion was observed in 30.3% of participants, depersonalization of the relationship in 21.2% and disorders of personal accomplishment at 36.3%. The combination of these three parameters has enabled to determine the overall burnout that was 68.2%, the mild form was 46.9% and the moderate form 21.2%; no severe form was observed. Burnout was more common among elderly and paramedics. These results are similar to those observed in other countries that have shown high prevalence of burnout among health workers. Conclusion: Burnout is a reality and, in long-term, can negatively impact health system’s performance.
