Your Most Essential
Audiovisual Aid...
Yourself!
The variable that
can turn a
“good class”
into a “bad
class”.
➔The
personality
of the
teacher.
Bored
Teacher
A bored teacher will
soon create for
himself or herself a
bored class, which
is a boring class.
And it leads to a
bored teacher =
Vicious circle.
● Is hard to resist.
● Generates a
responsive
enthusiasm in the
class.
● Students’
enthusiasm reaches
him as feedback
and stimuli.
Enthusiastic Teacher
Teachers as:
Visual Aids and Audio Aids
Suggestions to improve our
appearance...
The teacher as “visual aid”
1. Physical Position
Change your
position from
lesson.
Around a table
Around a group
of tables
X = teacher
X = teacher
A room with study chairs
Very big class
2. Eye contact
● With each student
in the class
whenever you are
addressing the
class a whole.
● With an individual
you are addressing
or who is speaking
to you.
● Share your
attention.
● Students will
not give you
their attention
if you are
unfocused.
● Hold you body.
● Look alert.
● An erect posture, no
slumping or sagging.
● Linked with your
voice and eye-
contact.
3. Posture
4. Control your Body
● Be aware of the
“message” it send to
students.
● Do not be completely
still; students might
fall asleep.
● Do not move too much;
students will assume
you are impatient or
nervous.
5. Arms and Hands
● To emphasize a
point.
● To describe a
shape.
● To describe a
movement.
● Do not over do it.
● Keep arm and hand
movements
meaningful.
● When talking to a
student keep your
arms and hands
still.
6. Face
● Be conscious of the
expressions you use and
their effects on
people.
● Be careful of you
facial expressions when
you are not talking.
● Cultivate a sympathetic
and encouraging
expression.
● Make your face
expressive when you
talk.
● Your body language
tells you students a
lot about you and your
attitude to what you
are doing.
Suggestions to improve our
appearance...
The teacher as “Audio Aid”
7. Voice
● To change a
monotonous voice
vary:
 The pitch
 The intonation
 The rhythm
 The tone
● Speak clearly; do
not mumble words.
● Use the right
volume.
● Do not make a lot
of “false starts”
 Rephrasing halfway
through a sentence.
How much do you talk?
If you talk during the whole lesson ask
yourself…
● Is it necessary for you to talk too much?
● What are your students doing while you are
talking?
● Do students learn something from what you
talk?
● Could they learn the same thing in a
different way?
Thank You!
