Autism
Allowing society to determine the cause...
People, who are not medical professionals,
start to make myths about a certain
disability and its cause. They start
discussing what they believe is the root for
disabilities. These unreliable sources start
to put "fear" in other parents to "prevent"
their children from having autism. They
also start to believe that people with autism
are not productive members of society and
need all around care.
TRUE OR
FALSE?
The cause of autism is
caused by vaccinating
children from
preventable diseases.
FALSE
This myth has been around for years and is
100% a false statement. According to an
article titled, Vaccination Cause of Autism
by Michael Davidson, MD, "The MMR
vaccine is administered to 12- to 18-month-
old children. At this age, the first signs of an
impending developmental condition, such
as autism, start creeping in and become
noticeable." The age for both vaccinations
and first signs of autism occur around the
same time. This causes parents to believe
that vaccines cause autism.

TRUE OR
FALSE?
Autism
is caused by
environmental
factors.
This Photo by Unknown author is licensed under CC BY-NC.
TRUE
According to the course
textbook, Exceptional lives:
Practice, Progress & Dignity in
Today’s Schools (9th ed.), "Aside
from biological factors,
environmental contributions to
autism include toxic exposure to
chemicals and radiation, exposure in
early pregnancy to maternal
medications (thalidomide, valproic
acid), and material
infection (rubella)." (pg. 310)

TRUE OR FALSE?
Autism is caused by a
certain parenting style of
being cold and neglected
This Photo by Unknown author is licensed under CC BY-NC.
FALSE
Parenting style does NOT contribute to children being
autistic. In the video titled, Autism Misconceptions -
Bad Parenting , the professionals of a DNA
laboratory state, "They saw that infants raised in
institutions who had no interaction with people early in
life appeared autistic, and so they made the
assumption that children with autism in normal
families were also somehow subtly neglected."

Students diagnosed with
autism are only placed in
aq self-contained
classroom.
TRUE OR
FALSE?
False
Students are placed in
classroom based on the
severity of their
disability. Based on a figure
in the course textbook on
cases from 2015-2016, "Only
40% students with autism
spend more than 80 percent of
their time inside general
education classes, and 42
precent of students are
educated in self-contained or
separate settings." (Turnbull, A.
et al. Pg. 320)

TRUE OR FALSE?
Students with autism can be productive
members of society.
This Photo by Unknown author is licensed under CC BY.
TRUE
People with autism can live a full independent life. This
also depends on where they're placed on the spectrum.
This is another myth that is often thought about when the
topic of autism is being discussed. Yes, some children
will require more monitoring than others, but some
student are able to contribute to society socially.

Notes de l'éditeur

  1. Society has changed the way we think about certain disabilities. Autism is seen as a big stigma today. People are fearful of their children being diagnosed with autism, that they allow society to change their way of thinking.
  2. First true or false statement, the cause of autism is caused by childhood vaccinations. Do you believe this to be true or false?
  3. This statement is false and is the biggest stigma about autism. Parents think that vaccines contribute to autism because the MMR vaccination and first signs of autism occur around the same age group.
  4. True or False? Autism is caused by environmental factors. Think about this myth before answering.
  5. This myth is actually true. Environmental factors do play slight role in the cause of autism. According to the course textbook, it mostly occurs with issues within a pregnancy,
  6. True or False? Autism is caused by a harsh and neglecting parenting style.
  7. False. This statement is completely wrong. Studies were conducted to see if parenting styles were a contribution to the cause of autism. It was proven to be inaccurate.
