Logistical factors influencing access and learning through video
1. LOGISTICAL FACTORS INFLUENCING ACCESS AND LEARNING THROUGH VIDEO-
MEDIATED EXTENSION APPROACH AMONG RICE FARMERS IN UGANDA
Introduction
Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) tools are gaining prominence in dissemination of agricultural
information, videos being one of such tools
In 2005, AfricaRice started use of videos to enhance access to agricultural information & learning among farmers
Between 2007-2010, Sasakawa Global (SG 2000) piloted use of videos in Kamwenge district of Uganda to
enhance access and learning about better rice production practices and technologies among farmers
However, access to agricultural information and farmer learning has been compromised by the logistical factors
Key Findings
Majority (81%) of the farmers
perceived the designated
location of video shows to be
appropriate while 19% said it
was far from their homesteads
The location mainly favoured
nearby farmers as indicated on
the map above
Timing of video shows (7:30pm
to 10:00pm) never favoured
attendance by women, elderly
and distant farmers
Rotating video shows across
villages and commencing early
at midday would enhance
attendance by women, elderly
and distant farmers
Conclusion
The modalities suggested by the
farmers with particular efforts on
intensifying awareness creation
through local channels, adjusting the
timing of video shows and operating
them on a rotational basis are vital in
fostering access and video-mediated
learning
Publicity
The main modes of publicizing video events were written
announcements and through group leaders. These are considered
to be cheap and affordable
Written announcements pinned in trading centers disfavoured 89%
of illiterate farmers who could not read and write
Farmers recommend use of local radios to publicize video events

The study sought to establish the logistical factors influencing access to
agricultural information and learning among rice farmers in Mahyoro sub-
county in Kamwenge district of Uganda using SG 2000 rice videos as a case
