3. You Should Have Said Thank You The first words we learn as kids are “Thank You” Your parents taught you good manners. Do you use them every day? How do YOU feel when you go unthanked? Is a “thank you” by email/FB/text good enough?Does it set you apart?
4. 5. If Only I Liked You ... All things being equal, people will dobusiness with you if they like you! It starts with a simple smile Do you smile when you answer the phone? How likeable are you? Do you think it matters?
6. Seven Deadly Creatures The Sucker The Whiner The Vulture Mr Halitosis The Puker The Topper Narcissus If you want to be super successful in business, don’t become one of them!
7. The Sucker The Sucker is the energy-sucking person that you don’t want to talk to one the phone. The one that gets sent to voice mail because you’re having a good day and you like it that way. The Appreciator gives off positive energy. Think about the people that you want to talk to and how they make you feel. Now make your customers and prospects feel THAT way.
8. The Puker The puker can be spotted across the room and they make people cringe. The puker is that person who, in all their excitement about something, figuratively throws up all over the person they are talking to. TOO MUCH INFORMATION The Appreciator controls his enthusiasm. If a contact seems interested have the courtesy to make an appointment and send them a “nice to meet” you message or greeting card before the appointment.
9. The Topper Everyone knows at LEAST one of these beasts. The Topper is that person who, no matter the situation, has to one-up you. Not necessarily a braggart, just too insecure to let someone else be good at something. The Appreciator lifts other people up. Let other people have their moment in the spotlight.
10. The Whiner The name pretty much says it all for this beast. They are never happy and every bad thing imaginable has happened to them. Today. Not a lot of fun to be around. The Appreciator doesn’t complain. When you complain 80% of the people don’t care and 20% are happy for you! The news on any given day should give you plenty of reason to realize how fortunate you are!
11. Narcissus Narcissus is the boy in the famous Greek myth. In this context, Narcissus is a guy who thinks the whole world revolves around him. I am the top producer. I am number one in my office. I am this. I am that. The Appreciator is humble. Nobody wants to sit down and have a conversation with a braggart. They want to do business with people they like.
12. The Vulture The vulture is an aggressive bird of prey who arranges an appointment or a meeting with you under false pretences. The vulture says all the right things to make you believe they are interested in you, then turns the tables and drops a sales pitch on you. The Appreciator is genuine and patient. People do business with people that they trust.
13. Mr. Halitosis This is the beast with bad breath, cat fur on his coat, sloppy clothes, messy hair. That “just rolled out of bed” look. In addition to poor hygiene, Mr. Halitosis has poor social skills, no manner and isn’t respectful to others. The Appreciator is clean and professional. Take a look at yourself and ask if you are physically pleasing to be around. You only get one chance to make a first impression. Let it be professional.
14. Chocolate Frosted Dog Crap It sounds funny but nobody laughs when they receive this stuff. What are your thoughts when you receive a birthday or holiday card with a business card inside? There’s a time and a place for business marketing but keep personal communications personal. (leave your logo off!) “The great enemy of clear language is insincerity” - George Orwell
15. Plant a TOMATO Garden Top Of Mind Awareness Through Others “The average 21 year old knows 2000 people on a first-name basis” - Psychology Today Maybe you only know 200 but if you have 200 people who like you and would do business with you (because you appreciate them) – then what if they each know 200? 200 x 200 = 40,000 Could you even write 40,000 pieces of business a year?
16. Collect Cards Do you have an unkempt pile of business cards lying around? What’s a business card worth in your eyes? A penny? How about considering each card to be an actual human being? What’s a lifetime customer worth to you? More than a penny? It’s not how many business cards you collect. It’s the quality of the relationships that you build with those human beings. And it’s easy!
17. The Popcorn Principle Simple disciplines repeated daily will guide your destiny What would happen if you smoked a pack of cigarettes a day? What if you eat a half-gallon of ice cream each day? What if you invested money every day? Hmm, what if you appreciated the people in your life every day?
