This document discusses how technology can lead to social isolation and neurosis. It argues that while technology allows for efficient communication, overreliance on online relationships substitutes real social interaction. When parenting with technology or using devices as distraction, it disrupts healthy development and physical relationships. Constant technology use trains people to seek false realities and self-justify excessive internet use, leading to social isolation when taken too far. Moderation of technology is important to maintain well-being.
2. Technology
- The branch of knowledge that deals with the creation and use of
technical means and their interrelation with life, society, and the
environment.
Isolation
- The complete separation of an individual or individuals from
others.
Neurosis
- A functional disorder in which feelings of anxiety, obsessional
thoughts, compulsive acts, and physical complaints with out evidence
of disease dominate the personality.
DEFINITIONS
4. PARENTING
• Parenting with technology can be an extremely efficient tool when
used properly.
• Parents can use technology to summon their kids home in a instant
and it allows them to have a reliable way of communication with them.
• This power can also be taken too far, when parents start use
technology as a way to raise their children it becomes a problem.
• Television and video games are a perfect example of this. Parents
that stick their kids in front of the TV or game system to entertain them
instead of spending time with them or allowing them to socialise with
their friends are setting their kids up for social and learning problems
in the future.
5. RELATIONSHIPS
- There is no doubt that technology is an extremely efficient way to
connect humans to one another.
- The problem is that humans expect too much from these online
relationships and start to substitute them for physical ones.
- It becomes addicting when we start to think that we are
connecting efficiently with one another and we continue to
explore the online relationships. This is the point when social
isolation becomes an issue.
- People start to use abbreviations for feelings and actions such
as laughter “LOL” and “LMAO”. These are continuously used in
electronic communication but they cannot replace the way we feel
when actually laughing with people.
6. RELATIONSHIPS CONTINUED….
• I have also seen people use electronic communication and
media to make confrontation easier. I personally think this is
very coward like. It does make sense because most people
feel uncomfortable with face to face confrontation.
• This leads us into the text being misunderstood. When instant
messaging or emailing someone our text is often hard to
understand in the way it was intended. If proper punctuation is
used it gives the reader some clues but still not enough
information.
• As the recipient or sender technology blocks us from viewing
the emotional responses and body language of the person we
are speaking with.
7. OBESITY
• There is a direct relationship between the adoption of technology and
the obesity rate. The increased time spent in front of
TV, videogames, and the internet have a direct impact on our health.
• There is a link between laziness and technology. Sitting in front of a
TV causes people to become addicted to false reality. Such as video
games and reality TV. This leaves them wanting more and more
which is when the real trouble starts.
• Because these people want to keep watching or playing in a online
environment there eating and exercising habits take a significant hit.
Instead of getting off the couch and making a quality dinner, people
order in or run around the corner to the nearest fast food restaurant.
8. VIDEO GAMES
• Video games are becoming increasingly complex, with more
realistic situations, environments, and characters.
• Many video game enthusiast can balance a healthy lifestyle. It
becomes a problem when they would rather log into their
favorite gamming environment instead of playing with their
friends or going to school.
• Studies show that 10 out of 15 gamers show signs, recognised
by the World Health Organization, of addiction through their
gamming habits.
• This also is strongly linked to the pervious obesity argument.
9. DISTRACTION
• Most gadgets are generally created to help improve the quality
of our lives, but when we spend to much time with such gadgets
that they actually do the opposite.
• By using these gadgets too much we actually be come less
connected to reality. Our social life tends to suffer as well as the
quality of time spent with family and friends.
• Once we consciously decide to put our gadgets to work for us
and not let them interrupt our physical relationships then we
become the master.
• The technologies that are now in everyone's homes and offices
are starting to get more attention than the people that surround
us.
10. DISTRACTION CONTINUED ...
• Constantly people have their eyes in their phones or computers
and often are missing out on the physical experiences that life
has to offer.
• This is when social isolation starts to happen, it is no ones fault
but our own.
• From driving, to relationships, to family life, and physical
interaction with others. Technology is a distraction to many of
us.
11. SELF JUSTIFICATION
• Since the growing popularity of the internet, people have been
looking for answers to every question they can type into Google.
• Anything from self justification of personal actions, to medical
research and diagnosis, to big purchases.
• While some of these searches can be helpful, humans should
still seek a professionals opinion. Especially for medical issues.
• I think that self diagnosis via the internet is a large sign of
internet obsession and it shows how much we rely on the
internet for help. Instead of going out and gathering the
information from a certified professional.
12. CONCLUSIONS
• As more and more technologies are developed humans need to
weigh the pros and cons of owning such items, as well as
learning how to be the master of these items.
• Keeping physical relationships is more and more important in
todays society
• Things like cell phones, laptops, iPad’s, video games and TV
cause people to be easily get caught up in fake worlds and false
reality. This is when social isolation and obsession starts and
has a snowball effect if it is not stopped or put into moderation.
