Picasso would have been proud. Upon walking into the Forum yesterday morning, Shapers found the back tent full of blank
canvases, colorful paint, and fresh paintbrushes. Teams were tasked with replicating an abstract painting but with a twist:
some could not talk, some were given limited supplies, and some could only view the painting for a minute. Not knowing that
their own painting would be part of one giant one in the end, many teams felt had they known the big picture, they would
have organized themselves differently.
Creativity is rooted in leadership—picking up the paintbrush and making that first stroke on a blank sheet, not always
knowing the next stroke, takes courage. Many people are afraid to think outside the box and change the status quo of a white
canvas. “We [Shapers] are disrupters, we want to break the rules. That is what shaping
means—breaking reality while being realistic,” members of Team Building Group 8 say.
So I invite you to go ahead and pick up that paintbrush - the world is your canvas.
See the big picture and go make art. [A. Pilipiszyn]

CREATING ONE
COMMUNITY
TOGETHER
Professor Schwab having a meaningful
conversation with the Shapers
C u r a t o r s h a v e t h e j o y ( a n d
responsibility) to lead our respective
hubs into creating impactful projects;
with a balanced mix of strategy and fun,
yesterday’s agenda was focused on team
building. As Professor Schwab told the
story of how he created and scaled up
the WEF the past 44 years, he
emphasized the importance of
community building.
The challenges of yesterday’s morning
art exercise represented ones curators
face everyday: inadequate resources,
information asymmetry, managing
silences. There were many takeaways
on how to improve managing hubs—
look at the big picture, focus on small
details and collaborate without
following self-imposed rules. ¨We got
much more than just painting a
picture,¨ exclaimed the Guru Guru
Tribe.
Combining our pieces together, we
created a “SHAPING” movement. The
Global Shapers community is made up
of single hubs striving to make global
impact and during the day, regions
worked together to tackle specific
trends and find common solutions.
“You can’t carry the weight alone as
curator—you need to share it with the
rest of the hub and trust them,” Cristina
Bustillo, from the Cartegena Hub.
Wishing you to continue the ACM
creatively,
Giulia Zanzi
Vice Curator of Geneva Hub
One of the organizations you founded focuses on youth empowerment.
What is one of its main achievements and what are the next steps?
With my organization, we are empowering youth: each semester we gather 15 to
20 young people for a period of 3 months in order to advise and coach them on
how to achieve their career goals. We are looking for people that put passion in
their work, as we want to help them start up their projects.
How does the Erbil Hub collaborate with the other hubs in the region
given the current scenarios?
Erbil is the only hub in Iraq; nonetheless, we collaborate with other hubs in the
MENA region to discuss the current challenges that we are facing. In particular, we
exchange ideas on how to overcome them.
In what way will you contribute to the discussion with regard to
migration at the ACM?
At the ACM I will talk about the occurrence of youth radicalization and youth
migration. My focus will be on how these issues are evolving and on the reasons
that are leading youth to join radicalized groups. I will be raising Western
countries’ awareness on youth migration and how this have been driven by the
instability in the region. My hope is that the collaboration with other curators met
at the ACM will result in finding sustainable solutions.
How has being a Shaper impacted your professional and personal life?
Being a Shaper has brought out the leader in me: I have had the opportunity to
collaborate with other peers, to suggest ideas and to find solutions together.

#GiftMyCulture is an idea to connect the global community through gifts that pay
tradition and culture forward to other communities at the ACM. "We're working
towards creating a gift pool that shall be shared with curators at the ACM as a
cultural takeaway from the experience. The campaign is our take on the idea that
everyone's connected," says Mark Laitflang Stone, curator of the Shillong hub in
India.
Initially targeted to create a resource pool of 500 gifts, the initiative received
overwhelming support
and participation from
more than 80 hubs to
create a pool of 800+
gifts and counting. This is
a beautiful story of how
people can come together
in ways that transcend
boundaries, geographical
and political, through the
simple act of giving.
