  The Learning Modules
The Enduring Impact Series consists of five (5) classroom-learning modules —each designed for delivery in a half-day (four-hour)
session. Recommended delivery of the modules is one every two to four weeks, with out-of-classroom learning activities through
the myGenos.net online platform conducted between sessions to reinforce classroom learning. Total recommended delivery time
for the program, including completion of pre-program multi-rater assessments, is 3 to 5 months.

Module 1 – The emotionally intelligent leader

Module 1 - The Emotionally Intelligent Leader – (Introduction and Overview)
This half-day module provides an introduction and overview to the concepts of emotional intelligence along with participant’s
assessment results. At the conclusion of this module participants set a development goal for the program.

 The Enduring Impact Multi-Rater Assessment
Core to the Enduring Impact Series is our Enduring Impact Multi-Rater assessment report. The foundation of emotional
intelligence development is the creation of greater levels of self-awareness. The assessment report creates this foundation—
based on both self-perception and the perception of others. In doing so, valuable insights about each participant’s demonstrated
EI in the workplace are explained, creating a valuable starting point for the EI developmental journey ahead.

Using a memorable 4-skill EI model (Awareness, Expression, Reasoning, Management), the assessment report has been
designed for ease of implementation (with only 29 questions, the assessment takes just 10 minutes for program participants and
their raters to complete). The 4-skill EI model is designed to be visually memorable, and the skills easy to retain and to apply.

Module 2 – The aware leader

Module 2 - The Aware Leader – Developing Emotional Awareness
Self-awareness is the foundation for developing all of the skills of emotional intelligence. How aware are your employees—not
only of their feelings, emotions, and mood states, but more broadly aware themselves in relation to others? Creating greater levels
of awareness, and a greater understanding of ‘differences’ with others will create the conditions for greater levels of expression,
reasoning, and management, as well as greater overall individual effectiveness.

The Aware Leader explores 4 different types of awareness:
Cognitive: What is your preferred ‘thinking’ style and those of your work colleagues and how does this impact your
behaviour—the way you communicate, make decisions, and solve problems.
Relational: What are your values, and what happens when your values are violated. More importantly, how can you create
better relationships through an understanding of your own and others values?
Somatic: Our bodies give out important clues—to ourselves and others. Being aware of your body—both internally (what
you feel when you are stressed or anxious) and externally (your tone of voice and body language), is beneficial for self
awareness, and as importantly, awareness of others.
Environmental: Where do you get your best ideas? How does your immediate environment (by example, a clean desk top
versus a messy one) impact your feelings and mood state, and correspondingly how you behave towards others? A greater
understanding of the impact of environment will help you to be more productive, stress-resilient, and creative.

Module 3 The authentic leader

Module 3 - The Authentic Leader – Developing Emotional Expression
Effective emotional expression is about the ability to talk openly about how you are feeling to the right person, at the right time,
and in the right amount. Emotionally expressive people are good at handing workplace conflicts. And because they talk openly
and appropriately about how they feel, they build feelings of trust and authenticity with their colleagues.

The Authentic Leader focuses on the everyday workplace occurrence of having authentic (or difficult) conversations.
Conversations that occur as a result of a workplace conflict. When you are faced with these situations in the workplace, what is
your default approach? Are you more assertive—focused on ‘winning’? Are you more accommodating, or perhaps even avoidant
of conflict? What other approaches might provide a better outcome—one that is more collaborative and creates a ‘win/win’.

What sort of perspectives might be at play when dealing with a workplace conflict? What sorts of stories might be told (from
simply the facts to something more complex like a story about reputation, values, or beliefs). The Authentic Leader explores the
fertile ground of dealing with conflict and how using the skills of emotional expression, along with a structured process for having
authentic conversations will create better outcomes for you and your work colleagues.

Module 4 – The expansive leader

Module 4 - The Expansive Leader – Developing Emotional Reasoning
We make decisions everyday. Someone who demonstrates high levels of emotional reasoning
will make these decisions based on facts and feelings; on data and intuition. They will consider
how individuals will react to their decisions. By factoring rational and emotional data into your
decision-making process, you will have a greater likelihood of making better decisions and also
 having work colleagues support them.

The skills of the Expansive Leader are never more valuable than in managing or dealing with
change. As the saying goes, the only constant in life is change—and that has never been truer
than it is in today’s faced-paced business environment. When approaching a change, or a
decision that ultimately involves change for you or someone you work with, how can you utilise
emotional reasoning to create a better outcome.

The Expansive Leader explores using stakeholder analysis—understanding individuals who are
likely to be impacted by a decision or a change, and how to move potential ‘rebel rousers’ and
‘blockers’ to change and instead create ‘champions’ by understanding who they are, how they are
likely to feel about the change, and to develop solutions and ways of communicating that reduce
resistance and create greater levels of engagement. The module also explores typical reactions to
positive and negative changes, and how utilising different communication vehicles and
techniques will help you achieve better results.

Module 5 – The centred leader
                                                                                                                    THALAMUS
                                                                                                                    (” The Air Traffic Controller”)

Module 5 - The Centred Leader – Developing Emotional Management
Individuals with high levels of emotional management come across as being
centred. They are good at maintaining positive moods, dealing effectively with
stress, and reacting to strong emotions (such as anger) in constructive ways. They
are also good at bringing out positive emotions and moods in others through what VISUAL
  they say and do. CORTEX
                                                                                              (” The Translator”)
                                                                                                                        AMYGDALA
                                                                                                                        (” The Emotional Sentinel”)

Using the metaphor of the ‘mood thermostat’, The Centred Leader explores both
reactive and proactive strategies for maintaining ‘your cool.’ Reactive strategies are
required when we experience strong negative emotions in the workplace such as
anger. Personal and workplace values are examined as a means of understanding
situations that might ‘trigger’ a strong emotional response in ourselves and in others.
And when you have a strong emotional reaction in the workplace, what is your
default behaviour pattern? Are you an attacker, an avoider, or a victim? What are
the consequences of these default behaviours, and how can you shift the behaviour
to mitigate some of the costs incurred on your workplace relationships?

Proactive strategies are about developing a deliberate effort around activities that
mitigate stress, enable a sense of calm, and in doing so, create greater levels of
workplace resilience. The Centred Leader utilizes thinking (i.e. meditation),
physical (i.e. exercise or breathing), relational (i.e. engaging a mentor or talking with
others), and environmental (i.e. work environment, work hours) strategies to be
resilient in the face of increasing workplace demands.

Does it work? – Most recent case study –
    The Bastow Institute
Genos tailored a version of our Enduring Impact series for the Bastow Institute of Educational Leadership,
which is the premiere body for building the knowledge and skill of all professionals in the Department of
Education and Early Childhood Development Victoria. The proof of the efficacy of any learning design,
blended or traditional, are in the outcomes achieved for participants. The results are as follows:

    •  70.4% of all participants (19 out of 27) achieved increases in at least 3 out of 7 skills of Genos EI
    •  59.3% of all participants (16 out of 27) achieved increases in at least 4 out of 7 skills
    •  48.1% of all participants (13 out of 27) achieved increases in at least 5 out of 7 skills
    •  22.2% of all participants (7 out of 27) achieved increases in all 7 skills

Based on observations of colleagues back in the schools—over 70% of program participants were
demonstrating noticeable improvements in the behaviours associated with emotionally intelligent
 leadership.
Beyond these Genos measured results, an independent consulting firm, Edutrack, was retained by the
Bastow Institute to evaluate the efficacy of the Genos blended learning approach. Their results showed:

100% of sampled participants satisfied with program overall
90% of sampled participants satisfied with program content
85% of sampled participants satisfied with program delivery

100% of responding participants agreeing that participation in the program had increased their knowledge
and skills to lead; 86% agreeing it had increased their confidence to lead; and 79% agreeing it had
increased their motivation to lead. Recently the Australian Institute of Training and Development awarded
 this program a High Commendation.

Program modules S EXP NES RE E SS AR IO AW CE N AN DE M CIS OR ION PERF S EMOTIONS MA BEH AV I O R S NG NA GE NI ME S O NT R EA The Learning Modules The Enduring Impact Series consists of five (5) classroom-learning modules —each designed for delivery in a half-day (four-hour) session. Recommended delivery of the modules is one every two to four weeks, with out-of-classroom learning activities through the myGenos.net online platform conducted between sessions to reinforce classroom learning. Total recommended delivery time for the program, including completion of pre-program multi-rater assessments, is 3 to 5 months. Enhancing decisions, behaviour and performance © 2008 Genos Pty. Ltd. - www.genos.com.au 4
  • 5. Module 1 – The emotionally intelligent leader Module 1 - The Emotionally Intelligent Leader – (Introduction and Overview) This half-day module provides an introduction and overview to the concepts of emotional intelligence along with participant’s assessment results. At the conclusion of this module participants set a development goal for the program. The Enduring Impact Multi-Rater Assessment Core to the Enduring Impact Series is our Enduring Impact Multi-Rater assessment report. The foundation of emotional intelligence development is the creation of greater levels of self-awareness. The assessment report creates this foundation— based on both self-perception and the perception of others. In doing so, valuable insights about each participant’s demonstrated EI in the workplace are explained, creating a valuable starting point for the EI developmental journey ahead. Using a memorable 4-skill EI model (Awareness, Expression, Reasoning, Management), the assessment report has been designed for ease of implementation (with only 29 questions, the assessment takes just 10 minutes for program participants and their raters to complete). The 4-skill EI model is designed to be visually memorable, and the skills easy to retain and to apply. Enhancing decisions, behaviour and performance © 2008 Genos Pty. Ltd. - www.genos.com.au 5
  • 6. Module 2 – The aware leader Module 2 - The Aware Leader – Developing Emotional Awareness Self-awareness is the foundation for developing all of the skills of emotional intelligence. How aware are your employees—not only of their feelings, emotions, and mood states, but more broadly aware themselves in relation to others? Creating greater levels of awareness, and a greater understanding of ‘differences’ with others will create the conditions for greater levels of expression, reasoning, and management, as well as greater overall individual effectiveness. The Aware Leader explores 4 different types of awareness: Cognitive: What is your preferred ‘thinking’ style and those of your work colleagues and how does this impact your behaviour—the way you communicate, make decisions, and solve problems. Relational: What are your values, and what happens when your values are violated. More importantly, how can you create better relationships through an understanding of your own and others values? Somatic: Our bodies give out important clues—to ourselves and others. Being aware of your body—both internally (what you feel when you are stressed or anxious) and externally (your tone of voice and body language), is beneficial for self awareness, and as importantly, awareness of others. Environmental: Where do you get your best ideas? How does your immediate environment (by example, a clean desk top versus a messy one) impact your feelings and mood state, and correspondingly how you behave towards others? A greater understanding of the impact of environment will help you to be more productive, stress-resilient, and creative. Enhancing decisions, behaviour and performance © 2008 Genos Pty. Ltd. - www.genos.com.au 6
  • 7. Module 3 The authentic leader Module 3 - The Authentic Leader – Developing Emotional Expression Effective emotional expression is about the ability to talk openly about how you are feeling to the right person, at the right time, and in the right amount. Emotionally expressive people are good at handing workplace conflicts. And because they talk openly and appropriately about how they feel, they build feelings of trust and authenticity with their colleagues. The Authentic Leader focuses on the everyday workplace occurrence of having authentic (or difficult) conversations. Conversations that occur as a result of a workplace conflict. When you are faced with these situations in the workplace, what is your default approach? Are you more assertive—focused on ‘winning’? Are you more accommodating, or perhaps even avoidant of conflict? What other approaches might provide a better outcome—one that is more collaborative and creates a ‘win/win’. What sort of perspectives might be at play when dealing with a workplace conflict? What sorts of stories might be told (from simply the facts to something more complex like a story about reputation, values, or beliefs). The Authentic Leader explores the fertile ground of dealing with conflict and how using the skills of emotional expression, along with a structured process for having authentic conversations will create better outcomes for you and your work colleagues. • 8. Module 4 – The expansive leader Module 4 - The Expansive Leader – Developing Emotional Reasoning We make decisions everyday. Someone who demonstrates high levels of emotional reasoning will make these decisions based on facts and feelings; on data and intuition. They will consider how individuals will react to their decisions. By factoring rational and emotional data into your decision-making process, you will have a greater likelihood of making better decisions and also having work colleagues support them. The skills of the Expansive Leader are never more valuable than in managing or dealing with change. As the saying goes, the only constant in life is change—and that has never been truer than it is in today’s faced-paced business environment. When approaching a change, or a decision that ultimately involves change for you or someone you work with, how can you utilise emotional reasoning to create a better outcome. The Expansive Leader explores using stakeholder analysis—understanding individuals who are likely to be impacted by a decision or a change, and how to move potential ‘rebel rousers’ and ‘blockers’ to change and instead create ‘champions’ by understanding who they are, how they are likely to feel about the change, and to develop solutions and ways of communicating that reduce resistance and create greater levels of engagement. The module also explores typical reactions to positive and negative changes, and how utilising different communication vehicles and techniques will help you achieve better results. • 9. Module 5 – The centred leader THALAMUS (” The Air Traffic Controller”) Module 5 - The Centred Leader – Developing Emotional Management Individuals with high levels of emotional management come across as being centred. They are good at maintaining positive moods, dealing effectively with stress, and reacting to strong emotions (such as anger) in constructive ways. They are also good at bringing out positive emotions and moods in others through what VISUAL they say and do. CORTEX (” The Translator”) AMYGDALA (” The Emotional Sentinel”) Using the metaphor of the ‘mood thermostat’, The Centred Leader explores both reactive and proactive strategies for maintaining ‘your cool.’ Reactive strategies are required when we experience strong negative emotions in the workplace such as anger. Personal and workplace values are examined as a means of understanding situations that might ‘trigger’ a strong emotional response in ourselves and in others. And when you have a strong emotional reaction in the workplace, what is your default behaviour pattern? Are you an attacker, an avoider, or a victim? What are the consequences of these default behaviours, and how can you shift the behaviour to mitigate some of the costs incurred on your workplace relationships? Proactive strategies are about developing a deliberate effort around activities that mitigate stress, enable a sense of calm, and in doing so, create greater levels of workplace resilience. The Centred Leader utilizes thinking (i.e. meditation), physical (i.e. exercise or breathing), relational (i.e. engaging a mentor or talking with others), and environmental (i.e. work environment, work hours) strategies to be resilient in the face of increasing workplace demands. • 11. Does it work? – Most recent case study – The Bastow Institute Genos tailored a version of our Enduring Impact series for the Bastow Institute of Educational Leadership, which is the premiere body for building the knowledge and skill of all professionals in the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development Victoria. The proof of the efficacy of any learning design, blended or traditional, are in the outcomes achieved for participants. The results are as follows: •  70.4% of all participants (19 out of 27) achieved increases in at least 3 out of 7 skills of Genos EI •  59.3% of all participants (16 out of 27) achieved increases in at least 4 out of 7 skills •  48.1% of all participants (13 out of 27) achieved increases in at least 5 out of 7 skills •  22.2% of all participants (7 out of 27) achieved increases in all 7 skills Based on observations of colleagues back in the schools—over 70% of program participants were demonstrating noticeable improvements in the behaviours associated with emotionally intelligent leadership. Beyond these Genos measured results, an independent consulting firm, Edutrack, was retained by the Bastow Institute to evaluate the efficacy of the Genos blended learning approach. Their results showed: 100% of sampled participants satisfied with program overall 90% of sampled participants satisfied with program content 85% of sampled participants satisfied with program delivery 100% of responding participants agreeing that participation in the program had increased their knowledge and skills to lead; 86% agreeing it had increased their confidence to lead; and 79% agreeing it had increased their motivation to lead.
