Princess In The Outfield
By
Gerald Ferry
INTERIOR: Elk Run High School gymnasium, The schools state
championship winning girls softball team is being honored. The
girls are lined up across the gym floor, and as coach Rachel
Dealey calls out each girls name, the girl steps forward to
applause from their schoolmates.
DEALEY
Shannon McLain……..Lisa White…….Angela Harris…..Monique
Devereaux…….
At last, Dealey comes to the end of the names.
DEALEY
…….And last, but not least, The MVP of the state playoffs
and of the Elk Run Condors….Jackie Lindsay….
From a side entrance of the gym steps Jackie Lindsay, holding
the state championship trophy, and the MVP trophy. She turns,
first to her teammates, then to the rest of the student body,
holding both trophies up for all to see.
CUT TO: TWO TEACHERS AT FAR END OF THE GYM
Two teachers are watching the ceremony. They both applaud
Jackie, and the trophies.
TEACHER 1
So, That’s Jackie Lindsay..
TEACHER 2
(A little surprised)
Yeah, That’s her
TEACHER 1
I’ve seen her in the hall, but I’ve never had her as a student so I
didn’t know who she was. She’s breathtaking. Which of these
guys is her boyfriend?
TEACHER 2
That’s what’s surprising. She doesn’t have a boyfriend. The guys
are so intimidated by her athletic skills, they think of her as one
of the guys.
TEACHER 1
That’s a shame. So pretty……
TEACHER 2
Do you see the guy sitting at the end of the bleachers over
here?
CAMERA ANGLE ON JASON NEWBERG
TEACHER 1
Yeah
TEACHER 2
That’s Jason Newberg. He’s a classmate of Jackie’s. Last
semester he was in my Health Ed class, and another guy in class
started making loud statements about how he would like to
have sex with Jackie, and how she wouldn’t want another guy
after being with him. Jason stood up and punched the kid in the
face and broke his nose. Jackie’s best friend, Shannon McLain
was also in that class, and Jason made her promise not to tell
Jackie what happened, that he has a crush on her, but that he’s
too nervous to ask her out. Shannon told him she would try to
hint around to Jackie how much he likes her.
TEACHER 1
Wow, I hope that works out.
CAMERA ANGLE BACK ON JACKIE
Jackie hands both trophies over to her coach, and goes to the
end of the gym floor with the rest of the team where there are
ropes hanging down the wall.
CAMERA ANGLE ON GIRLS PULLING ON THE ROPE
The girls pull on the rope, and a banner begins to rise up the
wall. The banner is white with red letters, the school colors. As
the banner rises, the student body sees it reads:
ELK RUN CONDORS
GIRLS SOFTBALL
STATE CHAMPS 2013-14
The student body begins to applaud, until it reaches a full roar.
CAMERA ON JACKIE
Jackie waves, beaming proudly . Coach Dealey again steps to
the microphone on the gym floor for some final comments:
CAMERA ON DEALEY
DEALEY
All of this show of appreciation for these fine young
women athletes makes it doubly hard to make this
announcement.
CAMERA ON AUDIENCE, THEN ON JACKIE
The audience in the gym goes silent. Jackie looks at her coach,
curiously.
CAMERA BACK ON DEALEY
DEALEY
The school board is announcing budget cutbacks on athletics
starting next school year . Because of those cutbacks we have
to discontinue girls softball.
CAMERA ON SOFTBALL TEAM, JACKIE IN MIDDLE
As the student body groans in disappointment, the softball
players look at each other in shock. Jackie looks as though she
has been punched in the stomach, then looks down at the floor
as the tears well up in her eyes.
CUT TO: OPENING CREDITS
As credits roll, so does a montage of pictures from Jackies’
summer. Mainly pictures from her Rec League softball games.
The last of the photos show Jackie next to a banner that reads
SUMMER RECREATION LEAGUE CHAMPS-GIRLS SOFTBALL 2014.
Although Jackie is smiling, there is pain behind that smile as she
tries to compensate for the loss of what she lived for.
CUT TO: INTERIOR: ELK RUN HIGH SCHOOL
The hallways are bustling with students between periods, going
to their lockers to get their books for their next class. Among
them is Jackie and her best friend, Shannon McLain. The girls’
lockers are side by side, and as they grab their books for the
next hour, Shannon is telling Jackie about her date of a couple
of nights earlier.
CAMERA FOLLOWS GIRLS DOWN THE HALL
SHANNON
Everything was great, Dinner, the movie, all of it. Then he goes
to kiss me good night and suddenly he sneezes.
JACKIE (Incredulously)
He sneezed…?
SHANNON
He sneezed, all over my face. He kept apologizing to me, and
helped me clean up. He was so embarrassed, he might not ask
me out again.
JACKIE( Trying to stifle a laugh)
You never know. He might for prom.
SHANNON
Yeah, maybe. I still feel a little slimy, like I need to go to the
doctor for a shot.
Jackie laughs and shakes her head at her friends’ misfortune.
Near Jackies’ classroom is a bulletin board with sign up sheets
for spring activities.
CAMERA ON SHANNON
SHANNON
Hey Jax, here’s signups for spring activities. You gonna sign up
for anything?
CAMERA ON JACKIE
JACKIE
Nah, softball was the only thing in spring I cared about. If they
just could have cut back anything else but that.
CAMERA ON SHANNON
SHANNON (nodding, then her eyes
perk up)
Look, here’s signup for baseball. Have you ever thought about
that?
CAMERA ON JACKIE
JACKIE
Are you kidding? You think those guys would let me?
CAMERA ON SHANNON
SHANNON
Why not? There’s nothing preventing it. There’s no rule saying
a girl can’t play baseball. You have the athletic ability to hit and
throw every bit as well as those guys.
CAMERA ON BOTH GIRLS
JACKIE
You’re serious, aren’t you?
SHANNON
Yeah, I’m serious. Look, you had something you loved taken
from you when they dropped softball, and you’ve been trying
to replace it since. What a better way to replace it.
A smile slowly grows on Jackies’ face.
JACKIE
Shannon, you are absolutely right. I’m gonna do it.
Shannon lets out a squeal of delight and gives Jackie a quick
hug. Jackie takes her pen and signs her name to the list for
baseball. Then both girls quickly head for class just before the
bell rings.
CUT TO: EXTERIOR: LINDSAY HOME
The Lindsay home is located in a cul-de-sac in a upper middle
class neighborhood. A car pulls into the driveway as we

Jackie comes in the front door as her mother walks in from the
kitchen.
CAMERA ON DEANNE
DEANNE
What’s going on, Jackie…?
CAMERA ON JACKIE
JACKIE (barely suppressing her
enthusiasm)
What makes you think something’s going on, mom?
CAMERA ON JACKIE AND DEANNE
DEANNE
Just that I haven’t seen you this enthused and happy since last
year’s state championship.
Jackie finally gives a big smile as she tells her mom.
JACKIE
Mom, I’ve decided if they’re going to cut out softball, I’m going
to play baseball instead…What do you think ?
Deanne’s mouth drops open in surprise.
DEANNE
Fine, if that’s what you want to do. But are you sure you want
to be on the boys team ? Are any of the other girls going to try
out ?
JACKIE
Well…no. Shannon brought up the idea to me.
DEANNE (after a roll of the eyes)
It figures, it’s a Shannon idea.
JACKIE
What’s wrong with that?
DEANNE (shrug of shoulders)
Nothing, I guess. If you trust a girl who thought she found her
perfect match on one of those dating sites, and it turned out to
be a 14 year old.
JACKIE
Oh, mom……………..(after a couple of beats) What do you think
dad will say ?
DEANNE
Hard to say, he might be all for it. On the other hand, he might
have his reservations about his little princess playing with the
boys.
Jackie nods her head and smiles a little at that thought.
CUT TO: EXTERIOR: LINDSAY HOME: EVENING

CAMERA WS ON JEFF AND DOORWAY WHEN JACKIE APPEARS
Jeff Lindsay sits in his den after a pleasant evening meal with
his family. He’s going thru the mail, shaking his head at some
pieces of junk mail, when Jackie appears at the door and knocks
softly.
JACKIE
Dad……You busy?
JEFF
No……Come in and sit down, Princess.
Her dad’s reference to her as Princess makes Jackie smile, and
she takes it as a sign her dad will be open minded to her idea.
Jackie sits on the edge of the sofa, on the corner closest to her
dad, who is sitting in an armchair.
JACKIE
Dad, I’ve decided if they’re going to take away softball, I’m
going to play baseball with the boys team, What do you think?
JEFF
(After pausing briefly to think) What does the coach think, does
he know what you’re thinking?
JACKIE
I’m sure he does by now. I signed up today.
JEFF
Well….I’d talk to him to make sure things don’t go wrong.
JACKIE
What do you mean, Dad?
JEFF
Sweetie, you remember the story of the girl who decided to try
to play college football, Don’t you? (Jackie nods her head) The
boys on the team gave her a rough time, throwing footballs at
her head, grabbing her and fondling her inappropriately. After
a year, she left the team. I don’t want to see that happen to
you.
JACKIE
I don’t think it will. The guys at school think of me as one of
them.
JEFF
(With a smile) Just the same, you should talk to him.
JACKIE
(With a beaming smile indicative of how much she loves her
dad) OK Dad, I will.
Jackie stands up, and before leaving the room, she gives her
dad a big hug.
CUT TO: EXTERIOR SHOT: ELK RUN HIGH SCHOOL LEADING TO
INTERIOR SHOT OF CAFETERIA,
It’s lunch hour at Elk Run High. The tables are full of students
eating, talking with their friends, and general horseplay. Jackie
has completed her meal, and is putting up her tray when
Shannon joins her, and walks toward the door with her.
CAMERA ON BOTH GIRLS
SHANNON
Doing anything before next hour?
JACKIE
Yeah, I’m going to talk to Coach Diller about my idea of playing
baseball.
SHANNON
I’m sure he won’t have any objections
At the same time the girls reach the doorway, Coach Allen Diller
walks in.
DILLER
Jackie……I was a little shocked when I saw the signup sheet for
baseball, and saw your name on it. I hope this isn’t someone’s
idea of a joke.
JACKIE (clears throat)
No sir, it isn’t……I loved softball, but that’s been taken away.
Baseball is still here, and I love that game as well. I feel with my
abilities in softball I can transfer them to baseball. I’ll give it my
best. That’s all you can ask for, isn’t it?
Coach Diller smiles
DILLER
Yes, it is. I was talking to Coach Dealey about you. She said you
would not only give it 100%, but be a great teammate as well.
Only thing though, she says you like to talk it up in the locker
room, bring everyone together. As you’ve probably already
figured, you’ll be in a separate locker room from the guys. Hard
to do with that arrangement.
JACKIE
I know. I’ll do it on the bench instead.
DILLER
Just like Coach Dealey said, You’ll find a way. See you at
practice.
Jackie smiles and continues out the door, and down the hall to
her next class, joining Shannon along the way.
SHANNON
What did he say?
JACKIE (with a smile)
I’m in.
The two girls exchange fist bumps
JACKIE
Now I have to show everyone I belong.
SHANNON
I hardly think that’s a problem, Jax. Those guys know what you
did in softball.(smiles) And you never know, amongst all those
guys is a potential boyfriend.
JACKIE
Oh, Shannon. Get real. I’m doing this because I love baseball
and I love to compete, not to scope out guys.
Shannon laughs as the girls walk into their American History
classroom.
CUT TO: EXTERIOR, ELK RUN HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL FIELD:
Guys trying out for Baseball are on the field, stretching,
throwing the ball, warming up before the start of practice.
Coach Allen Diller is leaning against the fence near the teams
bench watching. Senior star pitcher David Hill, who led the
state in strikeouts the year before, approaches his coach.
HILL
Coach, are the rumors I’m hearing true, that Jackie Lindsay is
going to try out?
DILLER
You heard right……….Problem?
HILL (looking down at his feet)
No……..It’s just that it’s never been done at Elk Run. A girl trying
out for a boys sport.
DILLER
Well, there’s a first time for everything. I’d appreciate it,
though, if you guys just treat her like she’s one of the guys.
HILL (With a smile)
Sure, Coach
CUT TO: GATE BY THE BENCH
As the Coach ends his conversation with David Hill, Jackie
Lindsay walks on the field wearing red sweatpants, a t-shirt that
says ELK RUN CONDORS, a visor, and eye black under both
eyes. Eyes turn to watch her walk across the field, and pick up a
ball, looking for someone to warm up with. She catches the
attention of Jason Newberg, Like Jackie, a Senior.
JACKIE
C’mon, You wanna warm up?
Jason nods his head, and the two of them start tossing the ball
back and forth. Jason smiles slightly at his new teammate.
While being a good baseball player himself, he is generally shy
around girls, but has held a crush on Jackie Lindsay since they
were Freshmen.
DILLER
All right everyone in. Batting practice
Jackie takes one last throw from Jason, keeps the ball in her
glove, and runs in. Jason takes a breath and feels a little flush
about being so close to Jackie.
DILLER
Since we have all our starters from last year back, you guys take
the field first. The rest of you get to hit first, then we’ll rotate.
Jackie, you’re first.
Jackie puts on a batting helmet, grabs a bat, and steps up to the
plate. David Hill, on the mound, looks with uncertainty first at
Jackie, then his coach.
DILLER
Well, c’mon David, it’s just like a game. Do what you’d do in a
game.
David Hill nods, goes into his windup, and throws a pitch weakly
to the plate. Before Coach Diller can say anything, Jackie speaks
up.
JACKIE
C’mon, I’m not here to get a weak effort. I won’t see that in a
game, and I don’t expect it from you. C’mon Dave.
Hill is surprised by Jackies’ reaction, but rears back and fires a
fastball to the plate. Jackie swings and connects, sending a hot
line drive between third base and shortstop. The fielders are
caught flatfooted, and don’t try to make a play on it, even
though chances are they wouldn’t have. Coach Diller is
disgusted.
DILLER
C’MON YOU GUYS. You gotta treat this like it’s a real game.
Heads up.
Jackie digs in at the plate again as David Hill again tries to
smoke one past her. Jackie connects again, and sends it up the
middle, past David Hill, over second base, and into center field
where Jason Newberg tries to catch it off his shoe tops, but
can’t quite.
DILLER
Alright, good effort Jason, good effort.
David Hill is feeling his competitive fire coming back, as he
again tries his fastball, and again Jackie lashes the ball, this time
into right field deep. The right fielder runs back, but can’t quite
reach it. By now the entire team is feeling a little fire, at the
challenge from one of their own, and at the realization of what
they have.
DILLER
That’s good, Jackie. Cline, you’re next
As Jackie takes off her batting helmet, and carries her bat back
to the dugout, David Hill looks at her, then to his coach almost
in disbelief. Coach Diller, nods his head and smiles, thinking,
yeah, I’ve got a player.
CUT TO: DAVID HILL ON PITCHERS MOUND
Hills’ first pitch to the next batter is slashed into Right Field. The
Right Fielder is known to like to embellish things a bit. The ball
is clearly playable, but the Right Fielder pauses for a moment
and dives for the ball, wanting to make a tough catch. He
catches it, but pays the price when he hits the ground with his
arm fully extended. He lets out a scream of pain as Coach Diller
and other team members rush over to his side. As he’s helped
to his feet it’s clear he has a separated shoulder. Coach Diller
sighs in resignation and frustration, then calls out.
DILLER
Ok, first rotation, Jackie, go to Right Field.
Jackie grabs her glove and trots out to Right Field, she looks
over at Jason in Center Field and gives him a nod. Jason returns
the nod and smiles at playing next to his crush again.
In the meantime, David Hill throws his next pitch, which is again
hit to Right Field, but a little tougher to reach. Jackie, however
has sprinters speed, as she runs over, stretches her glove out
and makes the catch at a full run. Gasps are heard all over the
field. Coach Diller is squinting with his hand stroking his chin,
nodding his head in approval.
A SERIES OF SHOTS SHOW JACKIE MAKING PLAYS ALL OVER
RIGHT FIELD, INCLUDING CATCHING A FLY BALL , TUMBLING TO
THE GROUND, AND BACK ON HER FEET STILL HOLDING THE
BALL.
DILLER
All right guys, great first day. Great job.
Jackie trots in from Right Field, crossing paths with Jason as he
walks in from having been one of the last batters.
JASON
Good job today Jackie. You look like you’re in mid season form
already.
JACKIE
Thanks Jason, you made some good plays today, and that last
hit into the bleachers over the left field fence was impressive.
JASON
Thanks (he looks down at his shoes at the thought that the girl
he has a crush on noticed this)
Jason continues walking into the dugout and to the locker
room. Jackie walks toward the gate to go to the girls locker
room, and notices Shannon sitting in the bleachers, as she has
been all practice.
JACKIE
Hey girl, whatup..?
SHANNON
You sound surprised. You think I was going to miss this? You
showed the guys today.
JACKIE
Aw, It’s just the first day of practice. (pause) Hey, Mrs Lawson
said that she was going to give us time to work on our English
Lit term papers tomorrow during class. You wanna go to the
library with me?
SHANNON
Nah, I’m leaving school early tomorrow, I’ve got a doctor’s
appointment.
JACKIE
Anything wrong?
SHANNON
My stomach’s upset a lot. I think It’s nerves from all the end of
the school year things, finals projects, college entrance exams,
graduation.
JACKIE
Yeah, I know. I’m sure it’s nothing to worry about.
SHANNON
I hope not. Talk to ya later.
Shannon gets up and walks to her car. Jackie walks out the gate
and to the girls locker room.
CUT TO: INTERIOR COACHES OFFICE
Allen Diller is sitting down to an interview with Jack West, a
high school sports beat writer for the local paper. West is
writing his preview for the high school baseball season, and
he’s finding out about Elk Run’s team.
WEST
Elk Run traditionally is a strong spring sports school. Your team
was on the verge of the state championship game a year ago,
while your girls softball team won the whole thing. Any
adjustments this year to push you over the top?
DILLER
Well, Jack. I had all my starters back until my Right Fielder
Thomas separated his shoulder during the first practice today.
WEST
That’s a shame. I hope you have a good replacement.
DILLER
I do, and mark my words, this replacement will have our
league, the city, and the state talking for a long time.
WEST (Intrigued)
Who is it?
DILLER
Our softball team has been disbanded by budget cutbacks, so
coming over from the girls softball team, Jackie Lindsay. She’s
my new Right Fielder, and is already making plays and hitting
the ball in a way that I don’t think Thomas will be missed too
much.
WEST (Thinking)
Jackie Lindsay……? Hey, didn’t her brother play for you a couple
of years back when you won the state championship.
DILLER
Yep, and she’s every bit the player Jake is.
West smiles, and continues writing notes.
CUT TO: INTERIOR NEWSPAPER OFFICE
Jack West has come back from his interview with Allen Diller,
and sits at his desk next to the desk of Mark Kizlee. Kizlee is a
sports columnist with an acid pen, and there’s nothing he won’t
take a jab at, if it suits him.
WEST
Hey, I just came back from talking to Diller over at Elk Run, and
he’s got a player coming up this year that you might be
interested in.
KIZLEE (With a sarcastic snort)
Who could that be?
West takes his notes and shows them to Kizlee. He looks back
at West slightly gape mouthed.
CUT TO: INTERIOR LINDSAY HOME
Jackies’ older brother Jake sits on the couch in the living room
as Jackie walks in the front door.
JAKE
Hey sis, you’re home a little later than usual.
JACKIE
Yeah, I’m trying out for baseball, and today was our first
practice.
JAKE
Good for you. I remember your disappointment last year when
they said they were dropping softball. I didn’t imagine you
would try baseball, though. How do you like Coach Diller?
JACKIE
I like him. He’s treating me like one of the guys, and the guys
are treating me that way too.
JAKE
Good, I would expect that from Coach Diller.
JACKIE
How’s your workouts going? You guys started training and
practice long before this.
JAKE
Not good at the moment. I strained a muscle running out a
bunt. I was hoping dad could give me a little therapy.
JACKIE
You know he’s the best. I’m gonna grab something to eat
before I start studying. Mom in the kitchen?
Jake nods yes and Jackie leaves the room.
CUT TO: ELK RUN HIGH SCHOOL
Scenes from Jackies’ school day, taking books from her locker
as she talks to other students, Listening to her teachers’ lecture
as she takes notes, Standing in front of a class giving a report as
other students take notes from her report. Lunch in the
cafeteria, laughing with her friends. Baseball practice, Swinging
at a pitch, hearing the crack of the bat as she connects, catching
a long fly ball as Jason crosses behind her, backing her up
CUT TO: LINDSAY HOME
Jake is sitting on the sofa, relaxing after receiving a treatment
on his pulled muscles from his father, when Jackie walks in the
front door and greets her brother. In a sense of perfect timing,
Jackies’ cell phone ringtone sounds off. Jackie pulls it from her
backpack, and sees it’s Shannon.
JACKIE
Hey Shannon…..
SHANNON (tearfully)
Jax……..
SPLIT SCREEN SHOWING BOTH SHANNON AND JACKIE:
Shannon is laying on her bed, clutching one of her many pink
stuffed bears as she continues the conversation.
SHANNON
.....I just came back from the doctors……I’m pregnant.
JACKIE
What?.....Shannon……when?......who?
SHANNON
You remember my cousins, Bill and Lisa Clayton, who go to
Byerton High? They introduced me to Kevin Hendricks, that
cute guy that pitches on the baseball team. Anyway, he asked
me out, and we went to dinner. Afterwards we took a stroll in
the park because it was near the restaurant. We got in a heavily
shrubbed area, and he started telling me how sexy he thought I
was. He kissed me just under my jaw, and put his arms around
me, and fondled me and I just melted. We did it under one of
the bushes. Then he took me home. I hoped he would call me,
but he never has.( begins to cry again) This is going to be a
shock for him. My mother is upset, and my dad will be too.
JACKIE
I know. There are ways it could have been worse.
SHANNON
Yeah, I guess…..Thanks Jax. No matter how bad things get, I can
always count on you to lighten it up a bit.
JACKIE
That’s what friends do.(pause) Do you have any idea what
you’re going to do?
SHANNON
(Sighs) I think I’m going to have to forget college for now, at
least until the baby gets old enough to go to school. My mom
and I have already discussed it some, she’s against aborting the
baby, and so am I. I want to see what Kevin thinks and says
about all this. No matter what he thinks, though, If I have to
raise this child on my own, I will. Even though my mom is upset,
she says she’ll help me any way she can.
JACKIE
I’ll do what I can, you know that.
SHANNON
I do…..Thanks Jackie.
JACKIE
Not a problem….Not to throw anything negative into this, but
you know the Byerton area, and the school are both known for
negative, immature reactions to everything. You might not get
a whole lot of support from Kevin, or his family.
SHANNON
I know, I just have to take that chance. See you in school
tomorrow Jax.
JACKIE
See ya then. (Pushes button to disconnect call)
SPLIT SCREEN DISSOLVED: SHOWING JACKIE
JAKE
That was Shannon? My god what does she have going on now?
JACKIE
Jake, she’s upset. She went out with a guy that goes to Byerton,
and he got her pregnant.
JAKE
Kevin Hendricks, right?
JACKIE
Right, how did you know?
JAKE
I was at the store the other day, and I saw him over at the next
aisle. I overheard him talking about a girl from Elk Run that he
had gone on a date with and how fine she was, and that she
was a good lay, but if she wants him to call her, she can forget
it. The guy he was talking to asked who it was, and he said
Shannon McLain.
JACKIE
That jerk. He better change his mind and do right by Shannon
JAKE(In a sarcastic whiny little boy voice)
You know if Shannon and her parents try to make him do
something, he’s just going to hold his breath until his face turns
blue.
JACKIE( Chuckles in sarcasm )
Yeah, I know. He’ll get his, somehow.
CUT TO: HALLWAY: ELK RUN HIGH SCHOOL
School has ended for the day. Students are at their lockers,
picking up their homework, and heading out to their cars or the
school buses. Jackie is headed for baseball practice when she
sees Shannon.
JACKIE
How did your dad react when you told him?
SHANNON
He was a little upset. He was wondering what I was going to do.
I think he’s relieved I’m keeping the baby, and he’s offering his
full support. Now, I have to tell Kevin. I found out from my
cousin where he lives, and I’m going there later. Will you come
with me for support?
JACKIE
Sure, after practice, we’ll go.
CUT TO:EXTERIOR OF HOME
Jackie and Shannon drive up to the front of home. A metal
signpost in the front yard identifies it as the Hendricks home.
SHANNON
Oh, man. Jax I’m nervous
Jackie prods her on to the front door. Shannon rings the
doorbell and after a short pause, it’s answered by a tall, blond
haired young man.
SHANNON
Hello Kevin
KEVIN(nervously fidgeting)
Shannon, what are you doing here?
SHANNON
We need to talk.
Kevin steps aside, and lets the two girls in the house. When
they enter the living room, they can see the reason for Kevins’
nervousness. Sitting on the couch is a cute, petite redhead that
both Jackie and Shannon recognize from having played against
her in softball.
KEVIN(Trying to be macho)
Well, what do you want? Make it quick. Chop chop.
SHANNON
I wanted to be gentle with this, but here it is. Kevin, you’re
going to be a father.
KEVIN
What? No way. You’re just mad at me because I haven’t called.
You want more of this, and you couldn’t think of any other way
to get it.
Kevins’ girlfriend on the couch is a little embarrassed by his
insensitivity, but gives a slight smirk.
SHANNON
No, all I want is support from you. I’d think you would want to
support your child.
KEVIN
No, I don’t. It’s not my fault you’re pregnant. You shouldn’t
have wanted it so bad.
SHANNON
Forgive me for being unlady like, but screw you. C’mon Jackie.
Jackie walks to the door ahead of Shannon. Shannon has one
last thing to say, more for the benefit of Kevins’ girlfriend than
anything.
SHANNON
Besides, you’re kind of small anyway.
Kevin stands there with nothing to say to that. His bottom lip
sticks out slightly like he’s pouting. His girlfriend watches
Shannon walk out, then looks at Kevin.
CUT TO: INTERIOR LINDSAY HOME
Jeff, Deanne, and Jake Lindsay are having dinner when Jackie
walks through the front door.
JACKIE
Mom, dad, sorry I’m late. I went with Shannon over to Byerton
to confront the jerk that fathered her baby.
JEFF
Well, next time you’re doing something like this, call first.
JACKIE
I will
Jackie sits at the table, and puts some salad in her salad bowl
before loading her plate with spaghetti and sauce.
DEANNE
How did it go? Is this guy gonna do right by Shannon?
JACKIE
Mom, are you kidding? This is a Byerton High School kid. He
isn’t taking responsibility for anything. He looked right at
Shannon, and said it isn’t his fault she’s pregnant.
DEANNE (Sighs)
Byerton High hasn’t changed since our day, hasn’t it honey?
JEFF (With a sarcastic snort)
Not a bit. Same immaturity, same feelings of entitlement
JACKIE
We play them the first game of the season. If I can, I’d like to
give Mr Kevin Hendricks what he deserves.
JAKE
I wanna be there to see that
JACKIE
It’s next Saturday, at Elk Run Field, 1:00
Jake smiles, imagining what his little sister might do. Jeff,
meanwhile is concerned about a newspaper column he was
alerted to today. He turns the sports page to the column by
Mark Kizlee. The title catches Jackies’ eye as well:
ELK RUN, BASEBALL, OR SLUMBER PARTIES
The column goes on to read: Elk Run baseball coach Allen Diller
is looking to go a step further than last seasons semi final loss
to Central. Is there a hard hitting Freshman that is the answer?
No, Diller is turning to the defunct Girls Softball team for his
answer. Jackie Lindsay, the star of last years Girls Softball State
Champions. Unless Diller thinks her brother Jake has morphed
into Jackie, he’s in for a long year. He may also be thinking that
sleep overs and pillow fights will improve the team.
JEFF
Can you believe that? Kizlee still hasn’t grown up.
Jackie looks down at her plate, and continues to eat, but looks
very sad.
JEFF
Don’t worry Princess, you know what you can do.
Jackie nods her head, and smiles.
CUT TO: ONE WEEK LATER: ELK RUN HIGH BASEBALL FIELD
The bleachers are full of fans for both schools.
The crowds eyes turn to the parking lot at the sound of
screeching tires. A Byerton student drives into the parking lot a
little faster than necessary, and screeches into a parking space,
almost hitting a couple of cars in the process. The student gets
out of the car, looks at the other cars with contempt, and walks
on toward the bleachers.
Elk Run supporters holding their breath exhale with relief while
Byerton supporters cover their mouths to suppress laughter.
BYERTON FANS
Oh James
The security guard confronts James
SECURITY GUARD
Don’t ever do that again.
James just looks at him like, “Who are you to lecture me?”
CUT TO: ELK RUN DUGOUT
The starters are ready to run out on the field.
DILLER
OK, You guys, let’s get this started right.
The Elk Run players run out of the dugout, and onto the field to
take their positions. Jackie runs out alongside Jason, and heads
to Right Field. Catcalls from the Byerton dugout follow her out.
BYERTON PLAYERS
Hey, you’re too cute for this game
Are you having a slumber party after the game? Can I come?
I hear Shannon McLain is good, Are you good too?
Jackie stiffens at the last two calls.
JASON
Relax Jackie. They’re nothing to get worked up about.
Jackie smiles slightly, which makes Jason happy. He likes her
smile. They warm up by tossing a ball back and forth until an
Umpire calls for them to throw it in. The first batter for Byerton
steps to the plate, and calls out in the direction of Jackie
Lindsay.
BYERTON PLAYER
Hey sexy, I hope you’re ready. I’m coming to you.
David Hill, on the mound has heard enough of the talk from the
Byerton players, and has a response of his own.
HILL
You want to hit it to Jackie? You’re gonna have to do it off me,
and I don’t think you can.
The batter steps in. David Hill goes into his windup, and lets a
letter high fast ball fly. The batter swings and misses as the
Umpire calls strike one. David gets the ball back and smiles. The
batter looks at the Umpire, then at David with his bottom lip in
the pouting position. David winds and deals an off speed pitch
toward the outside portion of the strike zone. The batter swings
with a grunt that sounds slightly like a whine, and misses. The
Umpire calls strike two, and the batter looks at him with
frustration.
JACKIE
One more Dave, one more.
JASON
Awright Dave, you got em baby.
Dave looks at the batter, goes into his wind, and delivers
another fastball that the batter flails at and misses for strike
three. He pounds the ground with his bat.
JACKIE
That’s one Dave, way to go
The first batter goes back to the dugout looking like he’s on the
verge of tears. The second batter steps up to the plate, and
Dave Hill tries to pump another fast ball by him. This one
swings and connects. The ball rockets down the right field line,
but begins to curve foul. Jackie was playing more toward right
center, but takes off running, thinking she has a chance to catch
it. She keeps running even when the Umpire calls foul ball,
reaches out, and snares the catch before pulling up just short of
the fence. The Elk Run faithful erupt in applause, drowning out
the Umpire calling out two outs. The batter had run down the
line a little ways, and when Jackie caught the ball, he threw his
head back in frustration.
JASON
That’s it Jackie. Good play
Shannon is among those sitting in the bleachers, cheering on
her friend
SHANNON
JAAAAAACKIIIEEEE……….
The third Byerton batter steps in, thinking he’s got a shot at
hitting one past Jackie, but his swing produces a weak dribble
to David Hill, who tosses it to first for the third out. The Elk Run
players run in to their dugout to applause from their fans.
Byerton players take the field muttering alibis.
DILLER
Awright Dave, good start. Great hustle Jackie. You’re starting
things off for us.
Jackie grabs her batting helmet, and steps to the plate, looks
up, and sees she’s facing Kevin Hendricks. She quietly simmers
as Kevin has something to say
KEVIN
You still mad at me for what’s happened to Shannon? Or are
you wanting a little of Kevin yourself?
Jackie cocks her bat back over her shoulder as Kevin winds and
delivers the pitch. Jackie swings and connects, a low line drive
straight back to the pitchers mound that catches Kevin off
guard until it connects with his groin, and ricochets into foul
ground before anyone can react. When they do react, Jackie is
standing on first base, and Kevin Hendricks is lying at the side of
the pitchers mound in agony. The umpires call time while the
Byerton coaches tend to Kevin. An Elk Run player is acting as
first base coach, and leans over to Jackie.
ELK RUN PLAYER( barely suppressing a laugh)
Nice…uh….hitting, Jackie
JACKIE
You know how it is. Paybacks a bitch
Camera shot of Shannon McLain, looking down toward her lap,
but you can see her body shaking from laughter. Jake Lindsay is
seated behind home plate, with his dad’s video camera. He got
a perfect shot of what his sister just did, and is now laughing as
he pans back and forth between the prone Kevin Hendricks,
and Jackie standing on first.
A new pitcher comes in for Byerton, and after some warmup
pitches is ready for the next batter. As he winds and gets ready
to deliver, Jackie adds insult to injury by taking off and sliding
into second base with a steal. The catcher whips off his mask in
frustration. The Elk Run batter, suppressing a laugh, lays down
a bunt down the third base line. Nobody can recover it in time,
and Jackie moves easily into third base, while the batter is safe
at first. Jason is the next batter, and Jackie yells encouragement
from third base.
JACKIE
C’mon Jason, bring me home.
Jason does more than that, as he takes the first pitch, then
slams the second into the left field corner. The left fielder
fumbles the ball around, and can’t get the ball back to the
infield. Jason, who’s really hustling, turns it into an inside the
park homer. Elk Run has now taken a 3-0 lead, with no one out.
CUT TO: LATER IN THE GAME
The scoreboard shows that Elk Run scored two more runs in the
first inning, and have added five more since then for a 10-0
lead. Byerton is in their last opportunity to save face, and score
a run or two to make their humiliation not so bad. Byerton
players sitting on the bench are looking at the ground, doing
their usual pouting, and offering no support of their teammates
coming to bat. Two of the players who have an overblown
sense of their importance, sit together on the bench and blame
a couple of their teammates.
With two outs in the last inning, the Byerton player at bat pops
a simple fly ball to right. Jackie moves over a couple of steps,
and makes the catch. She runs in with the ball, tapping gloves
with Jason on the way in as the other players congratulate
David Hill on his fine pitched game. The Byerton players come
out of their dugout to congratulate Elk Run, until their coach,
who has helped develop their poor sportsman attitudes, tells
them not to, and to head for the bus. Shannon is the first to
greet Jackie as she walks through the gate to go to her locker
room.
SHANNON
Great game Jackie, I told you that you could play with the guys.
They really ticked me off with what Byerton was saying to you
during the game.
JACKIE
Eh, Byerton’s not worth it
SHANNON
Right, let’s go down to the strip mall, and hang out a bit
JACKIE
Okay, meet me at the car.
Jackie continues to the locker room, with lots of supporters
patting her on the back, and congratulating her.
CUT TO: EXTERIOR: STRIP MALL
This is a strip mall with an ice cream shop in the middle that has
a patio where customers can sit and enjoy their ice cream.
Several Elk Run students are just hanging around, still charged
up from their baseball teams’ victory. Some are sitting around
the patio, eating banana splits, and talking when Jackie and
Shannon walk through. Several of the students acknowledge
Shannon, and ask her how she’s doing. Most are congratulating
Jackie for her plays in the game. Both girls order hot fudge
sundaes at the counter, and sit at a table.
SHANNON
Wow, you’re receiving more congratulations now than you did
for anything you did in softball
JACKIE
I know, I didn’t do anything any more special than I usually do.
SHANNON
Yeah, but you’re doing it on a guys team to another team of
guys.
Jackie looks at Shannon, and smiles
SHANNON
How do you like playing next to Jason Newberg in the outfield?
JACKIE
Okay, he’s a good guy. Why you ask?
SHANNON
Oh, just I’ve noticed a little how he is when you’re around. I
think he likes you.
JACKIE
Oh Shannon. If anything he probably has big brother feelings
SHANNON
I don’t know………….
Jackie gives Shannon a look just as a waiter, a boy in their class,
brings their order to the table. Both girls reach in their purses
to get money to pay.
WAITER
Don’t bother, the manager was at the game today. She knows
all about Kevin Hendricks and what he did to Shannon, and how
he’s treating her. She can’t stand Kevin, and she loves you,
Jackie, for racking him in the game. These hot fudge sundaes
are on the house.
JACKIE & SHANNON
Thank you.
Both girls eat the cherry on top, and stir the hot fudge and ice
cream together before taking a bite, they express how good it is
as David Hill comes to their table and sits down, closer to
Shannon.
HILL
Shannon, I support you in whatever you want to do….
SHANNON
Dave…..
HILL
I’m serious. I have something for you. I was going to give this to
my sister for her baby, but now, I want you to have it for your
baby. It’s a sleeper. I bought a yellow one, a neutral color.
JACKIE
What about your sister?
HILL
She lost her baby when she was five months along. I bought
this outfit a couple of months before that.
SHANNON
Dave, I don’t know what to say. This is so sweet.
HILL
I think a lot of you. Ever since we went to prom last year. I
didn’t really know how to express it to you. I have a couple of
other things at home I bought for my sister that you can have.
My sister told me to give it all to you. We heard about the hard
time you got from that tool from Byerton.
SHANNON
Dave, I……..I’m overwhelmed.
HILL
Well, if you want, you can come to the house with me, and
take a look at them.
SHANNON
I rode over here with Jackie. My car’s still at school
HILL
No problem, I’ll take you over there to pick it up. I live two
blocks from school.
SHANNON
Okay. Jackie, do you mind?
JACKIE
Go ahead, I’m gonna finish this sundae, and head for home.
Shannon leaves with David Hill. Jackie sits at the table, scraping
fudge off the side of the plastic cup when Jason Newberg spots
her and comes over to the table.
JASON
Hi Jackie, out celebrating our win?
JACKIE
Yeah, I was with Shannon, but she left with David Hill to look at
some baby things.
Jason didn’t know what to think of that, but goes on:
JASON
What are you doing now?
JACKIE
Nothing, I guess. I’m just gonna go home.
JASON
I was gonna do some skating. Have you ever done that?
JACKIE
When I was a little girl, maybe 10 years old. I haven’t since.
JASON
C’mon, you can skate with me.
JACKIE (Smiling)
Okay.
CUT TO: EXTERIOR: OUTDOOR ROLLER SKATING RINK
Jason is skating back and forth in the area where skaters
change from street shoes to skates. As he does, Jackie is tying
her laces tight. Finally, she’s ready.
JACKIE
I don’t know about this Jason. I don’t know if I stand up I can
stay on my feet.
JASON
Just stand slow. Don’t get in a hurry
Jackie does stand slow, and keeps her arms out for balance. She
tries to move her feet, and when she does, her feet fly out
from under her and she falls on her rear in front of Jason. She
chuckles out of embarrassment.
JASON
Don’t try to move too fast. Here let me help you up
Jason holds his hands toward Jackie. She takes them and boosts
herself to her feet again. She starts to say something, but
quickly realizes she’s still holding Jason’s hands. Jason doesn’t
seem in any hurry to let go of her hands either. Jason notices
Jackies’ hands feel soft and cool. Jackie notices Jasons’ are
warm and feels a little rough, like he works with them a lot.
They momentarily look into each others eyes. Jason finally
comes to.
JASON
C’mon, I’ll hang on to you while you skate
JACKIE
Okay
Jason skates backwards holding on to Jackies’ hands. They are
doing good. Jackie feels comfortable, and they both laugh a
little, until Jasons’ stumbles a little, and falls to the skating
surface. He’s still holding Jackies’ hands, and pulls her down on
top of him. They both laugh, until they look at each other, and
realize the positions they’re in.
JACKIE
Uh, I probably should be going. I think my parents are expecting
me home. Thanks for inviting me to skate. I had fun.
JASON
Oh yeah, okay. Hey this was fun. I’ll see you Monday. Okay?
JACKIE (Smiling)
Okay
Jackie shuffles to the changing area to retrieve her shoes, still
smiling a little, but also wondering about these feelings she’s
starting to have. Jason continues to skate, but steals a look at
Jackie shuffling off the floor, and feeling something for her.
CUT TO: INTERIOR: LINDSAY HOME: NEXT DAY: JACKIES
BEDROOM
Jackie’s bedroom is about what you would expect from a sports
fan with a Derek Jeter poster on the wall, trophies and plaques
with a baseball motif adorn her desk, her dresser, and shelves
on the walls. It’s also clear it’s a girls room with walls painted
pink, and stuffed bears wearing baseball uniforms on the
shelves, as well as Jackies’ bed. Jackie is sitting at her desk,
lamp on and a text book in front of her indicating she’s been
studying. At the moment, she’s talking on her cell phone to
Shannon about the events of the night before.
SPLIT SCREEN SHOWING SHANNON AND JACKIE:
JACKIE
So, what kind if things did David have for you?
SHANNON
Would you believe, one of those chairs that swings, some bibs,
and a carrier. Combined with whatever I receive at the
upcoming baby shower, I should be set a couple of months in
advance.
JACKIE
When’s your baby shower?
SHANNON
Dunno, my mom wants to plan one.
JACKIE
Tell her I want to be in on the planning
SHANNON
I think she has you in mind for some of that. Also David’s mom.
Would you believe David’s going to be my first steady boyfriend
since we were sophomores. He has really over whelmed me
with his caring, and he asked me to be his girlfriend……What did
you do after we left?
JACKIE
I was about to go home, then Jason saw me and invited me to
go roller skating with him.
SHANNON
Did you?
JACKIE
Yeah, I had a nice time. Jason’s a good guy. I started to feel
weird though.
SHANNON
Weird? How was that?
JACKIE
I fell down, and Jason took my hands and pulled me up. He
looked at me, and I looked at him, and I felt a weird connection
to him all of a sudden. He hung on to my hands, and we skated
around until he fell down and I fell on top of him. I had that
weird feeling in my stomach and chest again. Then I told him I
had to go home. He seemed to understand. When I looked into
his eyes, he seemed to look like what I was feeling.
SHANNON
I know what it is. He has a lot of feelings for you, and maybe
you’re starting to have feelings for him.
JACKIE
If he’s having feelings for me, why doesn’t he just ask me out?
SHANNON
He’s shy Jax. He knows how he feels about you, but since you
two are teammates in baseball, he’s not sure if asking you for a
date would compromise things on the ball field.
JACKIE
I don’t think it would. I can separate things. My life on the ball
field, and my dating life.
SHANNON
All I can say is, be careful. You’ve got a good thing going here.
JACKIE
I will. I better go, American History test tomorrow, and I’m
studying.
SHANNON
I know, same here. Talk to you tomorrow.
SPLIT SCREEN DISSOLVES: SINGLE SHOT CLOSEUP OF JACKIE
Both girls press the end button on their cell phones, and Jackie
goes back to her studying, but wondering in the back of her
mind about what Shannon was talking about. Could Jason be
not only a guy she exchanges fist bumps and congratulations
with, but someday a guy she shares a kiss with.
CUT TO: ELK RUN HIGH: BASEBALL FIELD
The players are warming up for a game with Schlossburg Prep.
Jackie and Jason are tossing a ball back and forth.
JASON
I was reading the story about our game with North in the Post.
They couldn’t seem to come up with enough words of praise
for you.
JACKIE
Thank you. That isn’t all that’s happened lately. A sports
magazine did an interview with me before the game, and they
had a photographer taking pictures of me during the game.
They also wanted me to pose for some pictures wearing my
uniform top with a bikini bottom.
JASON
That’s crazy…….
JACKIE
Tell me about it. Then my Facebook page has been blowing up
with friendship requests, mainly from guys from other schools.
One guy from Byerton wrote a message on my page saying he’d
like to be caught in a squeeze play with me.
JASON
You’re above all that, Jackie. You’re a senior in high school, and
a baseball player, not a sex object.
JACKIE
Thanks, Jason. You understand that I don’t want a bunch of
publicity, I just want to play baseball.
JASON
And your commitment to the game is why you’re so good.
Jason saying the things he says makes Jackie smile what Jason
thinks is the most beautiful smile he’s seen.
CUT TO: SERIES OF HIGHLIGHTS OF GAME
A series of video highlights show Jackie catching a flyball. Jackie
running down a line drive, reaching out with her glove, and
catching it in the tip of her glove, drawing loud applause from
the crowd and her teammates. Jason at bat, Jackie on first
base, Jackie running with the pitch and stealing second. Jason
hitting a double off the centerfield fence, driving Jackie home.
Jason standing on second applauding, Jackie giving a thumbs
up. We hear a voice over from local TV anchors:
“Marc is here with the sports. There’s a new high school sports
phenom, and she’s right here in Colorado.”
“ That’s right, Jackie Lindsay is her name, playing right field for
the Elk Run High School Condors is her game. Jackie was an All
State right fielder with the Lady Condors softball team, until
budget cuts ended the softball program. Jackie decided for her
senior year she would take a chance, and try to play on the
boys baseball team. The Condors are ranked first in the state
with an undefeated record of 12-0, and Miss Lindsay is their
leading hitter, batting .425, also ranked 1st in the state in that
category. It’s Pretty In Pink Power at Elk Run, and Condor
opponents are singing the blues.”
As the voice over runs it’s course, we see the Elk Run team
posing for their team picture. Coach Diller likes for the boys to
show how much class they have, so they rent tuxedos for the
picture. The only thing related to baseball the players wear is
their gloves. Jackie poses in a long formal dress. While the boys
sit in the bleachers, Jackie lies on a mat in front of the
bleachers to protect her dress. She is lying on her left side,
propped up on her elbow, with her glove on her left hand, and
a bat in her right over her shoulder.
CUT TO: INTERIOR: GROCERY STORE
Today is Saturday, no game, which means normally Jackie
would be working her part time job as a receptionist at her
dad’s Sports Therapy Clinic. However, her dad’s first
appointment isn’t until in the afternoon, so her mom has sent
her to the grocery store to pick up a few things. Jackie pushes a
cart up and down the aisles. Shannon is with her. Jackie checks
her list and picks up items, and puts them in the cart. She and
Shannon talk while she does so.
SHANNON
My mom’s really something. Daves’ mom is over at the house,
and they’re discussing some things for the baby shower. She
would like to discuss some things with you and your mom too.
JACKIE
Sure, I know my mom would love to, and your mom can call me
with whatever she wants to discuss.
SHANNON
She’ll be glad to hear that. After she’s done discussing the baby
shower for the day, She’ll be talking about who we’re sending
invitations to for graduation. Have you and your mom discussed
graduation much?
JACKIE
Oh yeah, Grandma and Grandpa Fox don’t get around very
good anymore, so Aunt Cindy and Uncle Don are bringing them.
On my dad’s side, Grandma and Grandpa are coming, Uncle
Ben, Uncle Joe and their families, Aunt Theresa and her family,
Aunt Susanne, Aunt Margie. My mom’s having fun with this
too.
SHANNON
I think it would be fun with all this family around, you could also
introduce them to Jason as your boyfriend.
Jackie says nothing to this.
SHANNON
You two are still getting along, aren’t you?
JACKIE
Yes,(Puts an item in her cart) I’ve been waiting, thinking he’s
going to express himself to me. He acts like he wants to, but is
afraid.
SHANNON
Stay patient, I think when he does he’s gonna rock your world.
Jackie smiles at that thought. A small girl of around six or seven
years old approaches Jackie.
LITTLE GIRL
Excuse me, are you Jackie Lindsay?
JACKIE (Smiling)
Yes, I am, and this is my friend Shannon
The little girl nods to Shannon, and goes on speaking to Jackie
LITTLE GIRL
I saw them talking about you on TV. My mom has taken me to a
couple of your games. I think you’re the best. Can I have your
autograph, please?
JACKIE (Clearly moved)
Sure, thank you sweetheart. What’s your name?
LITTLE GIRL
Alicia
Jackie takes the pen and paper offered by the girl, signs it, and
hands it back to the girl. Alicia takes it, and reads out loud what
Jackie wrote.
LITTLE GIRL
To Alicia, Follow your dreams, and you will go far in life. Love,
Jackie Lindsay
Her eyes sparkle as she looks up again at Jackie, whose eyes
sparkle too.
LITTLE GIRL
I’m playing on a tee-ball team right now. Next year, I’m going to
play with the bigger kids. I wanna be just like you.
Jackie kneels down to the girls level
JACKIE
You are so sweet, but you don’t have to be like me. Just be the
best you that you can be, and you’ll be fine.
LITTLE GIRL
(Smiles, and thinks for a moment) Will you come watch one of
my Tee-Ball games?
JACKIE
Sure, if I don’t have a conflict, I’d be glad to. Where and when
do you play?
LITTLE GIRL
Elk Run Park. The Tee-Ball diamond on Thursdays
JACKIE
I know where that is. I’ll be glad to be there.
The girl reaches up, and gives Jackie a big hug, then skips off to
her mother. Jackie watches her, then stands up and wipes a
tear from her eye she was so moved.
SHANNON(Wiping a tear from her
eyes)
Jackie, that was so sweet. You made that little girls day.
Jackie continues to look in the direction the little girl went, and
smiles.
CUT TO: VIDEO MONTAGE: ELK RUN GAME AGAINST BENTON
Footage of Jackie making a running catch of a deep line drive.
Hitting the ball into the gap in left center. The ball bounces to
the wall, and Jackie legs it out into a double. Later in the game,
Jackie hits a liner into center field and stops at first. Bentons’
first baseman congratulates Jackie.
BENTON PLAYER
Nice hit, baby
He acts like he’s going to pat Jackie on the back. Instead, he
places his hand on her butt cheek, cups it, and gives a little
squeeze.
JACKIE
HEY, HANDS OFF PERVERT
ELK RUN FIRST BASE COACH
What was that about? You keep your hands off her.
Jason comes to the dugout opening like he’s ready to take
anyone on for mistreating his teammate and crush. The Umpire
has heard the exchange going on and comes over.
BENTON FIRST BASEMAN
What?........What?.......
UMPIRE
Did you touch her?
ELK RUN FIRST BASE COACH
You touched her. Admit it
UMPIRE
Where did he touch her?
ELK RUN FIRST BASE COACH
He fondled her rear
UMPIRE
That’s all I need to hear. You’re out of the game
Benton’s coach hurries on the field
BENTON COACH
What do you mean, he’s out of the game? What did he do?
UMPIRE
He grabbed Miss Lindsay’s rear, and fondled it.
BENTON COACH
What are you doing, Jack? You know better. We’re gonna talk
on the bench.
Jackie sighs, and looks at the ground
CUT TO: EXTERIOR: PARKING LOT
The door leading to the girls locker room opens, and Jackie
steps out, looking dejected despite Elk Runs’ rousing victory.
She can’t stop thinking about the Benton player fondling her
butt. Why did he have to do that? As she walks to her car, she
hears a car approaching behind her. It’s James, the reckless
driver from Byerton, who almost hit a couple of cars before the
Byerton-Elk Run game weeks before. James recognizes Jackie,
and rolls down his window as he approaches.
JAMES
Hey Jackie Lindsay, I recognize you from our game against you
at the start of the season. You’re having a great year.
JACKIE
Thanks
JAMES
And I like the way you fill out your uniform. Some of us from
Byerton are placing bets about what’s in those pants.
Jackie continues to her car, ignoring James.
JAMES
I want to get a look so we can settle the bets. C’mon with me
JACKIE
NO….Go away
JAMES
Aw c’mon. Can you at least tell me. We want to know what kind
of panties you wear, and some of the guys want to know what
color they are
JACKIE
LEAVE ME ALONE
JAMES
I’m betting you wear thongs, and they’re yellow. C’mon, you
don’t know what you’re missing.
The locker room door for the boys locker room opens, and
Jason steps out. He hears the commotion, and recognizes
Jackies’ voice. He hurries to see if she’s in trouble.
JACKIE
I can live with not knowing. Go away
JAMES
C’mon, I’ll be gentle
Jackie reaches her car and fumbles with the keys trying to get
the door open. James gets out of his car, and approaches
Jackie, reaches out, and grabs her, and tries to force her to his
car.
JAMES
C’mon baby. I’ll be the best you’ve ever had
JACKIE
NO..I’m not interested. Go away…..HELP..LET ME GO…HELP
JASON
What’s going on? Are you alright Jackie?
James lets Jackie go when he sees Jason. At this same time, the
campus security cop comes around the corner in his car, and
seeing the confrontation going on speeds up and stops behind
James car. James is huffing and puffing like he’s about to have a
tantrum, and his bottom lip sticks out in a pout.
SECURITY OFFICER
I’ve seen you before, so I know I’ll recognize you if you come
around again. And if you do you’re going to jail.
James lets out a little whine, gets in his car, and drives away.
Jackie is a little shaken, and begins to cry. Jason gently
massages her shoulder.
JASON
I’ll follow you home to make sure he doesn’t follow you.
SECURITY OFFICER
Have you got a cell phone to call 911 if he does try to follow
her?
JASON
Yes sir, and thank you.
JACKIE
Thank you officer
The officer drives away. Jason starts for his car
JACKIE
Jason……….
Jason stops and leans over to look in the drivers window of
Jackies’ car.
JACKIE
Thank you so much.
JASON(Smiling)
No problem.
CUT TO: INTERIOR: LINDSAY HOME
Jackie walks in the front door as the rest of the family is sitting
down at the dinner table
DEANNE
Hi honey, how was……..Jackie, what’s wrong? You look shaken.
JACKIE
First of all, we won the game, and I had a decent game. But
after I hit a single their first baseman thought he could take
liberties, and fondled my butt.
JEFF
I hope someone did something about it.
JACKIE
The Umpire did after I yelled and the coaches said something.
They kicked him out of the game. His coach was mad at him for
doing it. We could see him yelling at the kid in their dugout.
Their coach apologized, but Coach Diller is still going to file a
complaint with the state activities association.
DEANNE
I hope they stick it to him good.
JACKIE
Then after the game when I was going to my car, some little
punk from Byerton drove up, and wanted me to get in his car
and go with him. He said that kids at Byerton have bets going
about what kind of panties I wear, and what color they are.
JEFF
Thank god you didn’t go with him.
JACKIE
I wasn’t interested in that over entitled punk. He kept insisting.
He grabbed me and tried to force me into his car. I thought he
was going to try to rape me. Jason Newberg came out, and
made him stop. Then the security guard came, and told him if
he saw him around Elk Run again he was going to jail. The kid
left, and Jason followed me home. I’ve never been so glad to
see a day end.
Deanne goes over and gives her daughter a hug.
DEANNE
Yes, it’s OK now. You’re home, and you’re safe.
Jackie takes a small bite of food, and tries to smile, but is not a
really convincing smile.
CUT TO: INTERIOR: ELK RUN HIGH
Jackie is walking through the front door near the principals
office. She noticed a police car in the parking lot, but really
didn’t think much about it. The principal sticks his head out the
office door.
PRINCIPAL
Jackie, can you come here for a moment?
Jackie walks into the office, and sees the police officer.
OFFICER
Miss Lindsay, the security guard says you had a confrontation
out here in the parking lot with a young man from Byerton High
last night.
JACKIE
Yes officer. This guy wanted me to go with him, and when I
refused he kept insisting. He grabbed me at my car, and tried to
force me into his car, but my friend came out, and he backed
off. I was afraid he was going to try to rape me. The security
guard came about then and ran him off. My friend followed me
home to make sure he didn’t try to follow me.
OFFICER
(Opens a mug shot book) Can you see him in these pictures?
Jackie scans the pictures until she sees a familiar face, and
points to the picture
JACKIE
That’s him officer
OFFICER
You’re sure?
JACKIE
Yes
OFFICER
You’re a very lucky young lady that you didn’t go with him. His
name is James Thornton. After he failed to get you in the car,
he went after a Byerton girl, saying he wanted to see her
panties.
JACKIE
That’s what he said he wanted from me.
OFFICER
Well, she laughed him off, until they went driving on a deserted
road, and he stuck his hand in her pants , pulled them down,
and raped her. He’s in custody now. Your identification will help
a lot. Thank you very much, Miss Lindsay.
JACKIE
Thank you officer.
Jackie leaves the principal’s office and goes to her locker,
running into Shannon.
SHANNON
If you didn’t have enough to deal with from that jerk from
Benton, I hear that one of the immature children from Byerton
tried to pick you up, and molest you.
JACKIE
Yeah, and wait until you hear this…..
Jason comes down the hall and sees Jackie
JASON
Jackie, I’m glad to see you. I heard something about this guy
last night.
SHANNON
And I was told you rescued Jackie last night
JASON
It was just good timing, just being in the right place at the right
time.
JACKIE
If you heard that guy raped a Byerton girl after he failed with
me, you heard right. A police officer came to school, and asked
me to identify him from the mug shot book.
JASON
I’m relieved they got him. If they need me to help identify him, I
will.
JACKIE
I don’t know if the officer is still there, but I bet Mr Moore
knows how to get ahold of him.
Jason reaches out, and briefly holds Jackies’ hand
JASON
I’m glad you’re okay
JACKIE (Smiling)
Thanks to you, I am
Jason goes down the hall toward the principals’ office. Jackie
watches him with a smile
SHANNON
He really is your knight in shining armor
JACKIE
Yes, he is. Oh Shannon, I’m really starting to have strong
feelings for him.
SHANNON
You don’t need to tell me. I can see it in your eyes, just like I can
see it in his. When you guys catch sight of each other, your eyes
light up, and you almost go out of your way to be with each
other.
JACKIE
Do you think maybe he’ll ask me to prom?
SHANNON
Wouldn’t surprise me. That may be when he opens up to you.
Jackie smiles
CUT TO: EXTERIOR: ELK RUN BASEBALL FIELD
It’s the quarterfinal round of the state playoffs. Videos of the
action show Jackie again running down a long fly ball and
making the catch. The scoreboard shows the score tied in the
bottom of the last inning. Bases are loaded, Jackie’s at the
plate. Everyones expecting Jackie to let one rip, but she fools
everyone with a squeeze play bunt. The perfect execution on
the bunt allows the runner on third to slide home safe, while
Jackie is safe on first. A newspaper headline shows “West-Elk
Run For State Semi-Finals”. Jackie is again thwarting Wests
attempts to go to the Finals with big defensive plays, including
making a catch off her shoetops. Again the scoreboard shows
the score tied in the last inning, and Elk Run at bat with the
bases loaded. Jackie is again the batter in a clutch situation.
This time she doesn’t have a chance to get a hit or a bunt. The
pitcher is trying so hard to put one past her he throws it low. It
hits the ground in front of Jackies’ feet and skips past the
catcher and to the backstop. The runner on third scores, and
Elk Run is on their way to the State Championship game. Elk
Run players are jumping up and down in celebration. Jason
starts jumping up and down with Jackie, and again, like at the
skating rink, their eyes meet, and they look at each other for a
moment. Then they resume their celebration.
CUT TO: NEXT MORNING: ELK RUN HIGH PARKING LOT
Jackie pulls into the parking lot, and into a space. Shannon pulls
in almost right behind her, and parks in the next parking spot.
JACKIE
Shannon, I don’t think I can wait anymore. I have to tell Jason
how I feel.
SHANNON
Jackie, you’re on the eve of playing for the state championship.
Aren’t you afraid of something like that blowing his mind, and
ruining his focus?
JACKIE
My mind has been blown for the last few weeks, since that
night we were roller skating. I had a hard time sleeping last
night, and when I did drift off, I started dreaming about him.
About holding him, hugging him, kissing him. Maybe I’ll settle
down after I get it over with.
SHANNON
Maybe you’re right.
CUT TO: EXTERIOR: ELK RUN BASEBALL FIELD
Baseball practice is just ending, and the players are heading for
their locker rooms. Two people no one knows, or has seen
before are in the bleachers. Their T-Shirts indicate they are
from Lima High School, Elk Runs’ opponent for the state
championship. When they see Jackie they start calling out to
her.
LIMA PLAYER 1
There she is, the Miss America who is going to try to beat us for
the state title.
LIMA PLAYER 2
Oh yeah, I’m getting scared. There is something we can do
about it though.
Upon hearing all this Jason is standing by the dugout to see
what they might try to do
LIMA PLAYER 1
What can we do? She’s so great.
LIMA PLAYER 2
My parents are gone for the weekend, and I’m alone in the
house. We can kidnap her, tie her up, and lock her in my
basement. Then after the game, we’re can party, and we can
take turns with her.
All this is nothing more than an attempt at intimidation, but
Jason has had it. He’s tired of the other teams trying to
intimidate her, and sexually harassing her. Jason reaches into
the bat rack and pulls out a fungo bat. Small, but enough to
inflict damage if used right. Jason comes out of the dugout,
twirling the bat like numchuks in his hands. The sight of that
startles the two Lima players, and they begin to back up. Jackie
is more startled by the hard look in Jasons’ eyes, replacing the
soft pleasant look she’s used to. Shannon is in the stands, and
angry as well.
SHANNON
YOU JERK. YOU LEAVE HER ALONE OR I’LL……..
Shannon leans over with her arms wrapped around her
stomach like she’s starting to go into labor. She screams with
pain. David Hill runs to her. Jackie starts running to her from
the field.
JACKIE
SHANNON………
The Campus Security Guard was nearby, hears the commotion,
and comes around to the bleachers. He takes in what’s going
on, and grabs his radio, and calls for an ambulance. The two
Lima players look confused. The Security Guard quickly figures
out what’s going on when he sees them
SECURITY GUARD
ALL RIGHT, YOU TWO, OUT OF HERE, OR YOU’RE UNDER
ARREST.
The two Lima players quickly leave. Jason puts the bat back,
settles down, and becomes concerned for Shannon, sharing
Jackies’ feelings.
ESTABLISHING SHOT: MEMORIAL HOSPITAL
CUT TO: INTERIOR: HOSPITAL WAITING ROOM
David, Jackie, and a woman we quickly realize is Shannons’
mom wait for word on what’s happening. David has a very
subdued expression on his face, quietly praying. Jackies’ eyes
are red and swollen from crying. Mrs McLain is clutching rosary
beads. The door opens, and the doctor comes in with a look of
relief on his face.
DOCTOR
Mrs. McLain?.........
MRS MCLAIN
Yes doctor, how is she?
DOCTOR
She just had some false labor. I recommend bed rest for a
couple of days, and no excitement.
MRS MCLAIN
Can we see her?
DOCTOR
Sure, she’s resting right now, but you can go right in
MRS MCLAIN
Thank You
CUT TO: HOSPITAL ROOM
Shannon is lying in bed, relieved she didn’t lose her baby, when
her mother, Jackie and David walk in
SHANNON
Hey……
MRS MCLAIN
How are you, sweetie?
SHANNON
I’m good mom. The doctor says I can’t have excitement for
awhile, though. I guess that leaves out going to the State
Championship game tomorrow.
JACKIE
You can still listen to it on the radio. AM950 is airing it.
HILL
We’ll beat them by the same score there as we will in person.
Shannon smiles
SHANNON
I know you will baby.
JACKIE
I’m gonna go so you can rest. Take care.
SHANNON
You too, and kick butt tomorrow.
Jackie leans over the bed, and gives Shannon a peck on the
cheek before walking out the door.
CUT TO: INTERIOR: HOSPITAL CORRIDOR
Jackie walks down the corridor toward the exit. A nurse at the
nurses station comes out and greets her.
NURSE
Excuse me, are you Jackie Lindsay?
JACKIE
Yes, I am
NURSE
It’s a pleasure to meet you. My name is Barbara Sherman. I was
a cheerleader at Elk Run along with your mom. She was always
such a sweet girl. I can see she passed that down to you.
JACKIE
Thank you. I’ll tell her I met you
NURSE
And your dad was always a great guy. I don’t see how he
tolerated that jerk Mark Kizlee. I would be happy if he punched
him out for what he just wrote about you.
JACKIE
About me……?
NURSE
Yeah (Hands Jackie the newspaper)
Jackie opens the paper to the sports page and finds Kizlees
column “Finally, The Joke Ends Tomorrow”
Kizlee wrote, “It’s taken longer than expected, but finally the
joke of a girl playing on a boys team has ended. When the game
ends tomorrow, Lima High School will expose Elk Run High as a
wanna be, and Jackie Lindsay as a fraud.”
Jackie has seen enough. She puts the paper down, and walks
out the door. By the time she reaches the parking lot, she’s
again in tears. She takes out her cell phone and calls home.
JACKIE
Mom…? I’m not coming home for awhile. I need to think about
some things. I’ll tell you when I come home. OK, Talk to you
later.
CUT TO: ELK RUN PARKING LOT
Jackie tearfully drives into the parking lot at Elk Run. She parks
the car, gets out, and walks up to the bleachers at the baseball
field. Workers are putting up bunting for the state
championship and other decorations, but Jackie is too upset to
care. She walks a few steps up the bleachers, sits down, puts
her head in her hands, and sobs uncontrollably.
A few seconds later, Jason walks up to the bleachers. He came
by just to think about tomorrows game, and settle down a little
to help him sleep. He hears a sob, turns and sees Jackie sitting
in the stands crying. He hurries up the bleachers to her side.
JASON
Jackie…? Jackie, what’s wrong?
JACKIE
Jason, I’m glad to see you. Everything’s wrong. First, I have a
guy grope me, then someone tries to rape me, then someone
comes along and talks about kidnapping me and holding me
hostage. If that’s not enough, my best friend almost loses her
baby, and that idiot Kizlee calls me a fraud for trying to play
boys baseball. Jason, I’m so frustrated. I’m so glad it’s going to
be over after tomorrow.
JASON
Jackie, you’re not a fraud. You have been our leader. From the
first day of practice, everyone has picked up their game
because of your example. Kizlee is a tool who can go to hell.
JACKIE
Thanks Jason. You’re a great guy. You’ve been there when I’ve
needed someone. We had a great time roller skating that one
night. You were there when that loser from Byerton tried to
rape me, and earlier when that Lima punk talked about
kidnapping me. You being here for me has meant a lot to me.
I’ve had these feelings inside me for awhile, and I haven’t been
able to get them out before, but I really care about you, and I
want to be with you.
Jasons’ eyes light up.
JASON
Jackie, I don’t know what to say. I feel the same way, and the
way you said it touched me so much. I care about you so much
and I want to be with you too.
Jackie smiles thru her tears. She reaches up and puts her arms
over Jason’s shoulders and around his neck. Jason wraps his
arms around Jackie’s middle, and hugs her tight. Jackie returns
the hugs, until they pull their heads back, and look each other
in the eye. Their lips meet in passionate kissing, until Jackie
pulls her head back
JACKIE
Wait a minute, baby. I hate to stop, but we have a game to play
tomorrow. We shouldn’t get carried away.
JASON
You’re right, sweetheart. We’ve got tomorrows game, but after
that, we have all the time in the world for each other.
JACKIE
Right. C’mon we need our rest for tomorrow.
Jason gets up first, and takes Jackies hand to help her up. They
walk hand in hand down the bleachers, and out to the parking
lot. Jason walks Jackie to her car, takes her keys and opens the
door to let her in, and gives her a kiss before walking to his car.
CUT TO: INTERIOR: LINDSAY HOME
Jackie walks in the front door. Her mother is on the couch,
watching television.
DEANNE
Jackie, what happened?
JACKIE
Everything was fine, until practice ended. Two guys from Lima
were there, and started talking about abducting me and
holding me hostage until after the game. It was just a stupid
thing to try to intimidate me, but after being groped and nearly
molested, It didn’t sound like simple intimidation. Anyway,
Shannon was there, and she became upset, and went into false
labor. She was taken to the hospital by ambulance. She’s fine,
and the baby is fine, but she needs bed rest for a couple of
days. Then, I was alerted to the column by Kizlee, saying he’s
glad the season’s ending tomorrow because I’m a fraud.
DEANNE(Sighs)
And I’ll be glad when the day comes the paper decides he’s a
fraud, and fires him. I’d hate to be there if he’s alone in the
same room with your dad(pause)For all you’ve been through,
you seem a little more upbeat than when you called earlier.
JACKIE (Beaming)
Mom, I’m in love
DEANNE(Taken back)
That’s great, honey. Who’s the guy?
JACKIE
Jason. He’s been so wonderful to me, so caring. He saved me
from being raped, He made those guys who talked about
kidnapping me back off. He consoled me earlier, and made me
feel so good. He kisses good too.
DEANNE(Chuckles)
You know your father’s going to want to get to know him.
JACKIE
I know, Jason told me everything that I felt about him, he feels
the same about me.
DEANNE
I could tell that even before this. He has always acted so happy
when you’re around. And lately, you’ve lit up when he comes
into a room .
JACKIE
Shannon told me the same thing. How come I’m the last one to
realize this?
DEANNE
Don’t know, Princess
JACKIE
Well, I’ve got a game tomorrow. Good night, mom.
DEANNE
Good night.
Jackie heads upstairs to her room. Jeff comes out from his
study.
JEFF
Well, what did she say?
DEANNE
Give you the short version, everything that’s happened finally
caught up to her and overwhelmed her.
JEFF
Bless her. She doesn’t deserve any of it.
DEANNE
And your old friend, Kizlee, is saying things against her. Just
rubbing salt in her wounds.
JEFF
I actually think in the long run, all this is going to make her
tougher. She’s developed a”If you don’t like it, screw you”
attitude, and if no one else likes it, that’s tough.
DEANNE
Also Jeff, your daughter, your little princess, just informed me
she’s in love.
JEFF
Really….? Am I gonna need to buy a shotgun?
DEANNE
Oh Jeff, I hardly think so. It’s Jason Newberg. Jackie says he’s
been very good to her.
Jake overhears all this and comes in the room.
JAKE
Yeah dad, Jason was a sophomore on the team my senior year.
He’s a good hearted person, and I think he’s had a crush on
Jackie anyway. I think he would be very good to Jackie.
JEFF
Good enough for me. But I still want to meet him.
CUT TO: NEXT MORNING: ELK RUN BASEBALL FIELD
Jackie pulls into the parking lot about two hours before game
time. She’s talking on her cell phone to Shannon.
SPLIT SCREEN: SHANNON AND JACKIE
JACKIE
I couldn’t believe it, Shannon. Once I started talking I couldn’t
stop. Everything I felt, I said. And after I finished he told me he
felt the same way, that I said everything he felt. And when he
kissed me it was the most wonderful feeling I’ve ever had.
SHANNON
Jackie, I couldn’t be happier if this was me.
JACKIE
I have to admit, you were right at the start of practice,
Shannon.
SHANNON
I was right? On what?
JACKIE
Don’t you remember? You said that amongst all the guys was a
potential boyfriend.
SHANNON
And you have the best one of the bunch.
JACKIE
I agree. You have a good one in Dave as well. I better go inside
and get dressed. You rest up, and behave.
SHANNON
And you raise hell, and kick butt.
SPLIT SCREEN DISSOLVES: SINGLE SHOT OF JACKIE
Jackie presses the button, ending the call. Jason pulls his car in
the parking lot, and parks next to Jackie.
JASON
Hi baby, you ready to play?
JACKIE
Ready as I’ll ever be
Jason leans down and they kiss. Then they go to their locker
rooms.
CUT TO: BOTTOM OF THE FIRST
David Hill held Lima to no hits in the first. Jackie, as usual, leads
off for Elk Run. She steps up to the plate, looks at the pitcher,
and sees it’s the guy who threatened to kidnap her. Jackies eyes
grow cold, and intense as she takes her practice swings. She
hears the voices from the past, “I hear Shannon McLain is
good, are you good too.””C’mon baby, I’ll be the best you ever
had”. “We can kidnap her, tie her up, and lock her in my
basement.””We can take turns with her”. The anger is welling
up in her. The pitcher sees this too, and flinches a bit
LIMA PITCHER
Nothing personal, OK?
Jackie doesn’t react. The pitcher tries to come with something
down the heart of the plate, daring Jackie to swing. Jackie does,
and the fans debate what was louder, the crack of the bat, or
the crack of the pitchers’ ankle breaking when the ball came
back and nailed him on the ankle. The ball deflected into foul
territory before anyone could react. While the pitcher
screamed with pain in front of the mound, Jackie ran to first
safe. The first base coach leaned over to her.
FIRST BASE COACH
Jackie, do me a favor and remind me to never piss you off, OK
Jackie laughs.
In a video montage: Jackie comes around to score when the hit
and run was on and the next batter hit the ball in the right field
gap for a triple. Jason hits his second inside the park homer of
the season when the ball hits the fence and eludes the
outfielders.
Mark Kizlee is seated in the right field bleachers. He wanted to
be seated behind Jackie Lindsay as she went thru her downfall.
Now it seems like she’s stronger than ever, but Kizlees’
arrogance won’t allow him to admit it.
The video montage continues with Elk Run commiting a couple
of errors allowing Lima to score to catch up. Jackie makes a big
play with a running catch to end a Lima rally.
CUT TO: FINAL INNING: TIED SCORE
The scoreboard shows Lima 6, Elk Run 6 after Jackie ended
another rally with a running catch. Bottom of the last inning.
This time Jackie’s leading off the inning
DEANNE & JEFF
C’mon Jackie honey, you can do it.
Jackie steps up to the plate, and takes a deep breath. She can
see Mark Kizlee sitting smugly in the right field bleachers. Her
eyes grow cold again at the sight of another tormentor. Her
karma has seemed to direct things in getting back at those that
disrespect her, and now she slowly swings her bat back and
forth before bringing it back over her shoulder. The pitcher
goes into his wind, and delivers. Jackie swings, and a loud crack
sends the ball hurtling into right field, climbing higher and
higher. The rightfielder turns, and runs back toward the fence.
He runs out of room at the fence, but the ball isn’t coming
down, it keeps going. Mark Kizlee isn’t paying attention to it.
He’s typing away on his laptop about Jackie Lindsay’s downfall.
However, the ball keeps going over the fence, thru about a half
dozen pairs of hands, before it connects with Mark Kizlees’
head. Kizlee looks up in shock, and his laptop falls off his lap
before his eyes roll to the back of his head, and he slumps over
unconscious.
Jackie lets out a scream, and jumps in the air at the sight of her
game winning homer. The first base coach makes sure she
touches first base before she runs around the bases, screaming
with joy. She reaches home, and is mobbed by her teammates,
and a few fans from the stands. Coach Allen Diller finally
reaches her.
DILLER
Jackie, I’m so happy to have coached you this year. You might
be the best athlete I’ve ever coached.
Jackie beams with pride. She finally sees Jason, and they start
jumping up and down. They stop and hug.
JASON
There was something I forgot to ask you last night
JACKIE
What was that?
JASON
Will you go to prom with me?
Jackie smiles
JACKIE
YES! I’ll go with you.
They start passionately kissing. Up in the stands, Jeff and
Deanne Lindsay are watching the celebration. Deanne catches
the sight of their daughter making out with her new boyfriend.
Taps Jeff’s shoulder and points to it. Jeff smiles at his little
princess and her new boyfriend. They stop kissing when a state
official comes out, and hands them the state champions’
trophy. Jackie, Jason and some of their teammates have their
hands under the trophy, and hold it up for everyone to see. In
the midst of the excitement, Jason leans over to Jackie.
JASON
My parents are going to a party tonight, and will be out late.
Care to come to my house.
JACKIE
(With a smile)
Okay
CUT TO: INTERIOR: NEWBERG HOUSE
The screen is black, until the door opens and the light is turned
on. It’s Jasons’ bedroom. Jason and Jackie enter passionately
making out, until Jackie sits on the bed and Jason sits next to
her, moving the hem of her dress up while massaging her thighs
and kissing her neck.
JACKIE
(Breathlessly)
Jason……..Be gentle.
JASON
I wouldn’t think of being any other way
As he says this, he slides his hand up Jackies’ thigh, massaging
and caressing it, and moving the hem of her dress higher. Jackie
begins to moan softly. Jason and Jackie begin passionately
kissing again. Jason takes his other hand, and feels up Jackie’s
back until he finds the zipper of her dress, and begins to unzip
it.
CUT TO: INTERIOR: McLAIN HOME
Jackie is visiting Shannon to see how she’s feeling. While
Shannon talks, Jackie is smiling, listening to her.
SHANNON
You guys played great yesterday. You had an unbelievable
game. Dave pitched well, and Jason was great hitting as well as
fielding. I couldn’t help getting excited as I listened, and your
homer to win the game was the best part. I heard it hit Kizlee in
the head and knocked him out.
JACKIE
It did, and the line drive in the first inning that broke the leg of
their pitcher. Would you believe that was the guy that was
talking of kidnapping me, and holding me hostage until after
the game?
SHANNON
(Shaking her head)
You’ve got some karma, or something. (Looks at Jackie
curiously) Is there something else going on? You’ve got a glow
about you big enough to light this house.
JACKIE
I shouldn’t say anything, but you’re my best friend so I can tell
you. After the game, after we celebrated on the field, Jason
invited me to his house because his parents were going to be
out. We went over there and made love on Jasons’ bed.
SHANNON
(Lets out a little shriek)
That’s great. How was it? How was he?
JACKIE
It was just like the way Jason is. Gentle, caring, very sweet.
After we were done, he let me take a shower and freshen up.
My mom and dad knew I was with him, but they didn’t suspect
anything else. Also, he asked me to go with him to prom.
SHANNON
That is really great. I think he is going to be very good for you
JACKIE
So do I. All of this has happened so fast. And I already care
about him so much.
SHANNON
I knew that if you two got together, he would rock your world.
Jackie smiles
CUT TO: INTERIOR: ELK RUN HIGH PROM
A student, presumably from the junior class is at the
microphone on the bandstand.
STUDENT
And your Prom King and Queen from the senior class as voted
by the juniors is………..Jason Newberg and Jackie Lindsay.
CAMERA ON JASON AND JACKIE
Jason and Jackie are sitting at a table with Shannon and David
Hill, and are very surprised by the announcement. They both
stand, and make their way hand in hand to the bandstand
where junior class representatives are there to place a crown
on Jason’s head and a tiara on Jackie’s. They also place a sash
on Jackie and give her a bouquet of flowers. Jason and Jackie
stand to applause from their school mates, holding hands and
smiling. They look at each other, and Jason leans down to give
Jackie a kiss. They then go out on the dance floor for the King
and Queen dance to “Unchained Melody” by the Righteous
Brothers
CUT TO: EXTERIOR: ELK RUN HIGH BASEBALL FIELD: SENIOR
GRADUATION
Friends and family of the graduates are seated in the bleachers
and in seats in the infield. The seniors are seated in the outfield
as Principal Moore is at the podium making announcements.
MOORE
An athletic scholarship for baseball and an academic
scholarship to Colorado State is awarded to……….. Jason
Newberg.
Applause from the parents and other graduates. Jackie is
seated next to Jason.
JACKIE
(With happiness)
Why didn’t you tell me about this?
JASON
Honey, I wanted this to be a surprise
MOORE
An athletic scholarship for softball and an academic scholarship
to Colorado State is awarded to………..Jackie Lindsay.
Again, applause from the parents and other graduates. Jason
looks at Jackie in surprise.
JACKIE
(smiling)
Darling, I wanted to surprise you too.
CUT TO: EXTERIOR: NIGHT: BEACH AT LAKE
The seniors of Elk Run High are having their first bash as
graduates, and the last as students before they move on to the
next phase of their lives. Jason and Jackie are sitting near the
campfire. Jason’s wearing jean shorts and no shirt, but the
wetness of his hair indicates he has been in the water. Jackie is
wearing a bikini, but she has covered it by wearing one of
Jason’s t-shirts. Jason has an arm over Jackie’s shoulders, and
Jackie is holding his hand in hers.
JASON
If there is one regret I have, it is that I didn’t tell you how I feel
about you first. I was so shy about it, I waited until you told me
your feelings first
JACKIE
It doesn’t matter who was first. The important matter is that
we know how we feel about each other
JASON
True, but I do want to be first to say this to you.
Jackie looks at him with a slight smile as she waits for his words
JASON
Jackie………I love you.
JACKIE
(A little misty eyed)
Baby…I love you too
They begin making out as the party goes on around them.
THE END
FADE TO BLACK: CREDITS ROLL. AS THEY DO SO DO PICTURES

Princess In The Outfield movie script

  • 1. Princess In The Outfield By Gerald Ferry
  • 2. INTERIOR: Elk Run High School gymnasium, The schools state championship winning girls softball team is being honored. The girls are lined up across the gym floor, and as coach Rachel Dealey calls out each girls name, the girl steps forward to applause from their schoolmates. DEALEY Shannon McLain……..Lisa White…….Angela Harris…..Monique Devereaux……. At last, Dealey comes to the end of the names. DEALEY …….And last, but not least, The MVP of the state playoffs and of the Elk Run Condors….Jackie Lindsay…. From a side entrance of the gym steps Jackie Lindsay, holding the state championship trophy, and the MVP trophy. She turns,
  • 3. first to her teammates, then to the rest of the student body, holding both trophies up for all to see. CUT TO: TWO TEACHERS AT FAR END OF THE GYM Two teachers are watching the ceremony. They both applaud Jackie, and the trophies. TEACHER 1 So, That’s Jackie Lindsay.. TEACHER 2 (A little surprised) Yeah, That’s her TEACHER 1 I’ve seen her in the hall, but I’ve never had her as a student so I didn’t know who she was. She’s breathtaking. Which of these guys is her boyfriend?
  • 4. TEACHER 2 That’s what’s surprising. She doesn’t have a boyfriend. The guys are so intimidated by her athletic skills, they think of her as one of the guys. TEACHER 1 That’s a shame. So pretty…… TEACHER 2 Do you see the guy sitting at the end of the bleachers over here? CAMERA ANGLE ON JASON NEWBERG TEACHER 1 Yeah TEACHER 2
  • 5. That’s Jason Newberg. He’s a classmate of Jackie’s. Last semester he was in my Health Ed class, and another guy in class started making loud statements about how he would like to have sex with Jackie, and how she wouldn’t want another guy after being with him. Jason stood up and punched the kid in the face and broke his nose. Jackie’s best friend, Shannon McLain was also in that class, and Jason made her promise not to tell Jackie what happened, that he has a crush on her, but that he’s too nervous to ask her out. Shannon told him she would try to hint around to Jackie how much he likes her. TEACHER 1 Wow, I hope that works out. CAMERA ANGLE BACK ON JACKIE Jackie hands both trophies over to her coach, and goes to the end of the gym floor with the rest of the team where there are ropes hanging down the wall. CAMERA ANGLE ON GIRLS PULLING ON THE ROPE
  • 6. The girls pull on the rope, and a banner begins to rise up the wall. The banner is white with red letters, the school colors. As the banner rises, the student body sees it reads: ELK RUN CONDORS GIRLS SOFTBALL STATE CHAMPS 2013-14 The student body begins to applaud, until it reaches a full roar. CAMERA ON JACKIE Jackie waves, beaming proudly . Coach Dealey again steps to the microphone on the gym floor for some final comments: CAMERA ON DEALEY
  • 7. DEALEY All of this show of appreciation for these fine young women athletes makes it doubly hard to make this announcement. CAMERA ON AUDIENCE, THEN ON JACKIE The audience in the gym goes silent. Jackie looks at her coach, curiously. CAMERA BACK ON DEALEY DEALEY The school board is announcing budget cutbacks on athletics starting next school year . Because of those cutbacks we have to discontinue girls softball. CAMERA ON SOFTBALL TEAM, JACKIE IN MIDDLE
  • 8. As the student body groans in disappointment, the softball players look at each other in shock. Jackie looks as though she has been punched in the stomach, then looks down at the floor as the tears well up in her eyes. CUT TO: OPENING CREDITS As credits roll, so does a montage of pictures from Jackies’ summer. Mainly pictures from her Rec League softball games. The last of the photos show Jackie next to a banner that reads SUMMER RECREATION LEAGUE CHAMPS-GIRLS SOFTBALL 2014. Although Jackie is smiling, there is pain behind that smile as she tries to compensate for the loss of what she lived for. CUT TO: INTERIOR: ELK RUN HIGH SCHOOL The hallways are bustling with students between periods, going to their lockers to get their books for their next class. Among them is Jackie and her best friend, Shannon McLain. The girls’ lockers are side by side, and as they grab their books for the next hour, Shannon is telling Jackie about her date of a couple of nights earlier. CAMERA FOLLOWS GIRLS DOWN THE HALL
  • 9. SHANNON Everything was great, Dinner, the movie, all of it. Then he goes to kiss me good night and suddenly he sneezes. JACKIE (Incredulously) He sneezed…? SHANNON He sneezed, all over my face. He kept apologizing to me, and helped me clean up. He was so embarrassed, he might not ask me out again. JACKIE( Trying to stifle a laugh) You never know. He might for prom. SHANNON Yeah, maybe. I still feel a little slimy, like I need to go to the doctor for a shot.
  • 10. Jackie laughs and shakes her head at her friends’ misfortune. Near Jackies’ classroom is a bulletin board with sign up sheets for spring activities. CAMERA ON SHANNON SHANNON Hey Jax, here’s signups for spring activities. You gonna sign up for anything? CAMERA ON JACKIE JACKIE Nah, softball was the only thing in spring I cared about. If they just could have cut back anything else but that. CAMERA ON SHANNON SHANNON (nodding, then her eyes perk up)
  • 11. Look, here’s signup for baseball. Have you ever thought about that? CAMERA ON JACKIE JACKIE Are you kidding? You think those guys would let me? CAMERA ON SHANNON SHANNON Why not? There’s nothing preventing it. There’s no rule saying a girl can’t play baseball. You have the athletic ability to hit and throw every bit as well as those guys. CAMERA ON BOTH GIRLS JACKIE You’re serious, aren’t you?
  • 12. SHANNON Yeah, I’m serious. Look, you had something you loved taken from you when they dropped softball, and you’ve been trying to replace it since. What a better way to replace it. A smile slowly grows on Jackies’ face. JACKIE Shannon, you are absolutely right. I’m gonna do it. Shannon lets out a squeal of delight and gives Jackie a quick hug. Jackie takes her pen and signs her name to the list for baseball. Then both girls quickly head for class just before the bell rings. CUT TO: EXTERIOR: LINDSAY HOME The Lindsay home is located in a cul-de-sac in a upper middle class neighborhood. A car pulls into the driveway as we
  • 13. CUT TO: INTERIOR: LINDSAY HOME Jackie comes in the front door as her mother walks in from the kitchen. CAMERA ON DEANNE DEANNE What’s going on, Jackie…? CAMERA ON JACKIE JACKIE (barely suppressing her enthusiasm) What makes you think something’s going on, mom? CAMERA ON JACKIE AND DEANNE
  • 14. DEANNE Just that I haven’t seen you this enthused and happy since last year’s state championship. Jackie finally gives a big smile as she tells her mom. JACKIE Mom, I’ve decided if they’re going to cut out softball, I’m going to play baseball instead…What do you think ? Deanne’s mouth drops open in surprise. DEANNE Fine, if that’s what you want to do. But are you sure you want to be on the boys team ? Are any of the other girls going to try out ? JACKIE Well…no. Shannon brought up the idea to me.
  • 15. DEANNE (after a roll of the eyes) It figures, it’s a Shannon idea. JACKIE What’s wrong with that? DEANNE (shrug of shoulders) Nothing, I guess. If you trust a girl who thought she found her perfect match on one of those dating sites, and it turned out to be a 14 year old. JACKIE Oh, mom……………..(after a couple of beats) What do you think dad will say ? DEANNE Hard to say, he might be all for it. On the other hand, he might have his reservations about his little princess playing with the boys.
  • 16. Jackie nods her head and smiles a little at that thought. CUT TO: EXTERIOR: LINDSAY HOME: EVENING CUT TO: INTERIOR: LINDSAY HOME: DEN CAMERA WS ON JEFF AND DOORWAY WHEN JACKIE APPEARS Jeff Lindsay sits in his den after a pleasant evening meal with his family. He’s going thru the mail, shaking his head at some pieces of junk mail, when Jackie appears at the door and knocks softly. JACKIE Dad……You busy? JEFF No……Come in and sit down, Princess.
  • 17. Her dad’s reference to her as Princess makes Jackie smile, and she takes it as a sign her dad will be open minded to her idea. Jackie sits on the edge of the sofa, on the corner closest to her dad, who is sitting in an armchair. JACKIE Dad, I’ve decided if they’re going to take away softball, I’m going to play baseball with the boys team, What do you think? JEFF (After pausing briefly to think) What does the coach think, does he know what you’re thinking? JACKIE I’m sure he does by now. I signed up today. JEFF Well….I’d talk to him to make sure things don’t go wrong.
  • 18. JACKIE What do you mean, Dad? JEFF Sweetie, you remember the story of the girl who decided to try to play college football, Don’t you? (Jackie nods her head) The boys on the team gave her a rough time, throwing footballs at her head, grabbing her and fondling her inappropriately. After a year, she left the team. I don’t want to see that happen to you. JACKIE I don’t think it will. The guys at school think of me as one of them. JEFF (With a smile) Just the same, you should talk to him. JACKIE
  • 19. (With a beaming smile indicative of how much she loves her dad) OK Dad, I will. Jackie stands up, and before leaving the room, she gives her dad a big hug. CUT TO: EXTERIOR SHOT: ELK RUN HIGH SCHOOL LEADING TO INTERIOR SHOT OF CAFETERIA, It’s lunch hour at Elk Run High. The tables are full of students eating, talking with their friends, and general horseplay. Jackie has completed her meal, and is putting up her tray when Shannon joins her, and walks toward the door with her. CAMERA ON BOTH GIRLS SHANNON Doing anything before next hour? JACKIE
  • 20. Yeah, I’m going to talk to Coach Diller about my idea of playing baseball. SHANNON I’m sure he won’t have any objections At the same time the girls reach the doorway, Coach Allen Diller walks in. DILLER Jackie……I was a little shocked when I saw the signup sheet for baseball, and saw your name on it. I hope this isn’t someone’s idea of a joke. JACKIE (clears throat) No sir, it isn’t……I loved softball, but that’s been taken away. Baseball is still here, and I love that game as well. I feel with my abilities in softball I can transfer them to baseball. I’ll give it my best. That’s all you can ask for, isn’t it? Coach Diller smiles
  • 21. DILLER Yes, it is. I was talking to Coach Dealey about you. She said you would not only give it 100%, but be a great teammate as well. Only thing though, she says you like to talk it up in the locker room, bring everyone together. As you’ve probably already figured, you’ll be in a separate locker room from the guys. Hard to do with that arrangement. JACKIE I know. I’ll do it on the bench instead. DILLER Just like Coach Dealey said, You’ll find a way. See you at practice. Jackie smiles and continues out the door, and down the hall to her next class, joining Shannon along the way. SHANNON
  • 22. What did he say? JACKIE (with a smile) I’m in. The two girls exchange fist bumps JACKIE Now I have to show everyone I belong. SHANNON I hardly think that’s a problem, Jax. Those guys know what you did in softball.(smiles) And you never know, amongst all those guys is a potential boyfriend. JACKIE Oh, Shannon. Get real. I’m doing this because I love baseball and I love to compete, not to scope out guys.
  • 23. Shannon laughs as the girls walk into their American History classroom. CUT TO: EXTERIOR, ELK RUN HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL FIELD: Guys trying out for Baseball are on the field, stretching, throwing the ball, warming up before the start of practice. Coach Allen Diller is leaning against the fence near the teams bench watching. Senior star pitcher David Hill, who led the state in strikeouts the year before, approaches his coach. HILL Coach, are the rumors I’m hearing true, that Jackie Lindsay is going to try out? DILLER You heard right……….Problem? HILL (looking down at his feet)
  • 24. No……..It’s just that it’s never been done at Elk Run. A girl trying out for a boys sport. DILLER Well, there’s a first time for everything. I’d appreciate it, though, if you guys just treat her like she’s one of the guys. HILL (With a smile) Sure, Coach CUT TO: GATE BY THE BENCH As the Coach ends his conversation with David Hill, Jackie Lindsay walks on the field wearing red sweatpants, a t-shirt that says ELK RUN CONDORS, a visor, and eye black under both eyes. Eyes turn to watch her walk across the field, and pick up a ball, looking for someone to warm up with. She catches the attention of Jason Newberg, Like Jackie, a Senior. JACKIE C’mon, You wanna warm up?
  • 25. Jason nods his head, and the two of them start tossing the ball back and forth. Jason smiles slightly at his new teammate. While being a good baseball player himself, he is generally shy around girls, but has held a crush on Jackie Lindsay since they were Freshmen. DILLER All right everyone in. Batting practice Jackie takes one last throw from Jason, keeps the ball in her glove, and runs in. Jason takes a breath and feels a little flush about being so close to Jackie. DILLER Since we have all our starters from last year back, you guys take the field first. The rest of you get to hit first, then we’ll rotate. Jackie, you’re first.
  • 26. Jackie puts on a batting helmet, grabs a bat, and steps up to the plate. David Hill, on the mound, looks with uncertainty first at Jackie, then his coach. DILLER Well, c’mon David, it’s just like a game. Do what you’d do in a game. David Hill nods, goes into his windup, and throws a pitch weakly to the plate. Before Coach Diller can say anything, Jackie speaks up. JACKIE C’mon, I’m not here to get a weak effort. I won’t see that in a game, and I don’t expect it from you. C’mon Dave. Hill is surprised by Jackies’ reaction, but rears back and fires a fastball to the plate. Jackie swings and connects, sending a hot line drive between third base and shortstop. The fielders are caught flatfooted, and don’t try to make a play on it, even
  • 27. though chances are they wouldn’t have. Coach Diller is disgusted. DILLER C’MON YOU GUYS. You gotta treat this like it’s a real game. Heads up. Jackie digs in at the plate again as David Hill again tries to smoke one past her. Jackie connects again, and sends it up the middle, past David Hill, over second base, and into center field where Jason Newberg tries to catch it off his shoe tops, but can’t quite. DILLER Alright, good effort Jason, good effort. David Hill is feeling his competitive fire coming back, as he again tries his fastball, and again Jackie lashes the ball, this time into right field deep. The right fielder runs back, but can’t quite reach it. By now the entire team is feeling a little fire, at the
  • 28. challenge from one of their own, and at the realization of what they have. DILLER That’s good, Jackie. Cline, you’re next As Jackie takes off her batting helmet, and carries her bat back to the dugout, David Hill looks at her, then to his coach almost in disbelief. Coach Diller, nods his head and smiles, thinking, yeah, I’ve got a player. CUT TO: DAVID HILL ON PITCHERS MOUND Hills’ first pitch to the next batter is slashed into Right Field. The Right Fielder is known to like to embellish things a bit. The ball is clearly playable, but the Right Fielder pauses for a moment and dives for the ball, wanting to make a tough catch. He catches it, but pays the price when he hits the ground with his arm fully extended. He lets out a scream of pain as Coach Diller and other team members rush over to his side. As he’s helped to his feet it’s clear he has a separated shoulder. Coach Diller sighs in resignation and frustration, then calls out.
  • 29. DILLER Ok, first rotation, Jackie, go to Right Field. Jackie grabs her glove and trots out to Right Field, she looks over at Jason in Center Field and gives him a nod. Jason returns the nod and smiles at playing next to his crush again. In the meantime, David Hill throws his next pitch, which is again hit to Right Field, but a little tougher to reach. Jackie, however has sprinters speed, as she runs over, stretches her glove out and makes the catch at a full run. Gasps are heard all over the field. Coach Diller is squinting with his hand stroking his chin, nodding his head in approval. A SERIES OF SHOTS SHOW JACKIE MAKING PLAYS ALL OVER RIGHT FIELD, INCLUDING CATCHING A FLY BALL , TUMBLING TO THE GROUND, AND BACK ON HER FEET STILL HOLDING THE BALL. DILLER All right guys, great first day. Great job.
  • 30. Jackie trots in from Right Field, crossing paths with Jason as he walks in from having been one of the last batters. JASON Good job today Jackie. You look like you’re in mid season form already. JACKIE Thanks Jason, you made some good plays today, and that last hit into the bleachers over the left field fence was impressive. JASON Thanks (he looks down at his shoes at the thought that the girl he has a crush on noticed this) Jason continues walking into the dugout and to the locker room. Jackie walks toward the gate to go to the girls locker room, and notices Shannon sitting in the bleachers, as she has been all practice.
  • 31. JACKIE Hey girl, whatup..? SHANNON You sound surprised. You think I was going to miss this? You showed the guys today. JACKIE Aw, It’s just the first day of practice. (pause) Hey, Mrs Lawson said that she was going to give us time to work on our English Lit term papers tomorrow during class. You wanna go to the library with me? SHANNON Nah, I’m leaving school early tomorrow, I’ve got a doctor’s appointment. JACKIE Anything wrong?
  • 32. SHANNON My stomach’s upset a lot. I think It’s nerves from all the end of the school year things, finals projects, college entrance exams, graduation. JACKIE Yeah, I know. I’m sure it’s nothing to worry about. SHANNON I hope not. Talk to ya later. Shannon gets up and walks to her car. Jackie walks out the gate and to the girls locker room. CUT TO: INTERIOR COACHES OFFICE Allen Diller is sitting down to an interview with Jack West, a high school sports beat writer for the local paper. West is
  • 33. writing his preview for the high school baseball season, and he’s finding out about Elk Run’s team. WEST Elk Run traditionally is a strong spring sports school. Your team was on the verge of the state championship game a year ago, while your girls softball team won the whole thing. Any adjustments this year to push you over the top? DILLER Well, Jack. I had all my starters back until my Right Fielder Thomas separated his shoulder during the first practice today. WEST That’s a shame. I hope you have a good replacement. DILLER I do, and mark my words, this replacement will have our league, the city, and the state talking for a long time.
  • 34. WEST (Intrigued) Who is it? DILLER Our softball team has been disbanded by budget cutbacks, so coming over from the girls softball team, Jackie Lindsay. She’s my new Right Fielder, and is already making plays and hitting the ball in a way that I don’t think Thomas will be missed too much. WEST (Thinking) Jackie Lindsay……? Hey, didn’t her brother play for you a couple of years back when you won the state championship. DILLER Yep, and she’s every bit the player Jake is. West smiles, and continues writing notes. CUT TO: INTERIOR NEWSPAPER OFFICE
  • 35. Jack West has come back from his interview with Allen Diller, and sits at his desk next to the desk of Mark Kizlee. Kizlee is a sports columnist with an acid pen, and there’s nothing he won’t take a jab at, if it suits him. WEST Hey, I just came back from talking to Diller over at Elk Run, and he’s got a player coming up this year that you might be interested in. KIZLEE (With a sarcastic snort) Who could that be? West takes his notes and shows them to Kizlee. He looks back at West slightly gape mouthed. CUT TO: INTERIOR LINDSAY HOME Jackies’ older brother Jake sits on the couch in the living room as Jackie walks in the front door.
  • 36. JAKE Hey sis, you’re home a little later than usual. JACKIE Yeah, I’m trying out for baseball, and today was our first practice. JAKE Good for you. I remember your disappointment last year when they said they were dropping softball. I didn’t imagine you would try baseball, though. How do you like Coach Diller? JACKIE I like him. He’s treating me like one of the guys, and the guys are treating me that way too. JAKE Good, I would expect that from Coach Diller.
  • 37. JACKIE How’s your workouts going? You guys started training and practice long before this. JAKE Not good at the moment. I strained a muscle running out a bunt. I was hoping dad could give me a little therapy. JACKIE You know he’s the best. I’m gonna grab something to eat before I start studying. Mom in the kitchen? Jake nods yes and Jackie leaves the room. CUT TO: ELK RUN HIGH SCHOOL Scenes from Jackies’ school day, taking books from her locker as she talks to other students, Listening to her teachers’ lecture as she takes notes, Standing in front of a class giving a report as other students take notes from her report. Lunch in the

Baseball practice, Swinging at a pitch, hearing the crack of the bat as she connects, catching a long fly ball as Jason crosses behind her, backing her up CUT TO: LINDSAY HOME Jake is sitting on the sofa, relaxing after receiving a treatment on his pulled muscles from his father, when Jackie walks in the front door and greets her brother. In a sense of perfect timing, Jackies’ cell phone ringtone sounds off. Jackie pulls it from her backpack, and sees it’s Shannon. JACKIE Hey Shannon….. SHANNON (tearfully) Jax…….. SPLIT SCREEN SHOWING BOTH SHANNON AND JACKIE:
  • 39. Shannon is laying on her bed, clutching one of her many pink stuffed bears as she continues the conversation. SHANNON .....I just came back from the doctors……I’m pregnant. JACKIE What?.....Shannon……when?......who? SHANNON You remember my cousins, Bill and Lisa Clayton, who go to Byerton High? They introduced me to Kevin Hendricks, that cute guy that pitches on the baseball team. Anyway, he asked me out, and we went to dinner. Afterwards we took a stroll in the park because it was near the restaurant. We got in a heavily shrubbed area, and he started telling me how sexy he thought I was. He kissed me just under my jaw, and put his arms around me, and fondled me and I just melted. We did it under one of the bushes. Then he took me home. I hoped he would call me, but he never has.( begins to cry again) This is going to be a shock for him. My mother is upset, and my dad will be too.
  • 40. JACKIE I know. There are ways it could have been worse. SHANNON Yeah, I guess…..Thanks Jax. No matter how bad things get, I can always count on you to lighten it up a bit. JACKIE That’s what friends do.(pause) Do you have any idea what you’re going to do? SHANNON (Sighs) I think I’m going to have to forget college for now, at least until the baby gets old enough to go to school. My mom and I have already discussed it some, she’s against aborting the baby, and so am I. I want to see what Kevin thinks and says about all this. No matter what he thinks, though, If I have to raise this child on my own, I will. Even though my mom is upset, she says she’ll help me any way she can.
  • 41. JACKIE I’ll do what I can, you know that. SHANNON I do…..Thanks Jackie. JACKIE Not a problem….Not to throw anything negative into this, but you know the Byerton area, and the school are both known for negative, immature reactions to everything. You might not get a whole lot of support from Kevin, or his family. SHANNON I know, I just have to take that chance. See you in school tomorrow Jax. JACKIE See ya then. (Pushes button to disconnect call)
  • 42. SPLIT SCREEN DISSOLVED: SHOWING JACKIE JAKE That was Shannon? My god what does she have going on now? JACKIE Jake, she’s upset. She went out with a guy that goes to Byerton, and he got her pregnant. JAKE Kevin Hendricks, right? JACKIE Right, how did you know? JAKE I was at the store the other day, and I saw him over at the next aisle. I overheard him talking about a girl from Elk Run that he
  • 43. had gone on a date with and how fine she was, and that she was a good lay, but if she wants him to call her, she can forget it. The guy he was talking to asked who it was, and he said Shannon McLain. JACKIE That jerk. He better change his mind and do right by Shannon JAKE(In a sarcastic whiny little boy voice) You know if Shannon and her parents try to make him do something, he’s just going to hold his breath until his face turns blue. JACKIE( Chuckles in sarcasm ) Yeah, I know. He’ll get his, somehow. CUT TO: HALLWAY: ELK RUN HIGH SCHOOL School has ended for the day. Students are at their lockers, picking up their homework, and heading out to their cars or the
  • 44. school buses. Jackie is headed for baseball practice when she sees Shannon. JACKIE How did your dad react when you told him? SHANNON He was a little upset. He was wondering what I was going to do. I think he’s relieved I’m keeping the baby, and he’s offering his full support. Now, I have to tell Kevin. I found out from my cousin where he lives, and I’m going there later. Will you come with me for support? JACKIE Sure, after practice, we’ll go. CUT TO:EXTERIOR OF HOME Jackie and Shannon drive up to the front of home. A metal signpost in the front yard identifies it as the Hendricks home.
  • 45. SHANNON Oh, man. Jax I’m nervous Jackie prods her on to the front door. Shannon rings the doorbell and after a short pause, it’s answered by a tall, blond haired young man. SHANNON Hello Kevin KEVIN(nervously fidgeting) Shannon, what are you doing here? SHANNON We need to talk. Kevin steps aside, and lets the two girls in the house. When they enter the living room, they can see the reason for Kevins’ nervousness. Sitting on the couch is a cute, petite redhead that
  • 46. both Jackie and Shannon recognize from having played against her in softball. KEVIN(Trying to be macho) Well, what do you want? Make it quick. Chop chop. SHANNON I wanted to be gentle with this, but here it is. Kevin, you’re going to be a father. KEVIN What? No way. You’re just mad at me because I haven’t called. You want more of this, and you couldn’t think of any other way to get it. Kevins’ girlfriend on the couch is a little embarrassed by his insensitivity, but gives a slight smirk. SHANNON
  • 47. No, all I want is support from you. I’d think you would want to support your child. KEVIN No, I don’t. It’s not my fault you’re pregnant. You shouldn’t have wanted it so bad. SHANNON Forgive me for being unlady like, but screw you. C’mon Jackie. Jackie walks to the door ahead of Shannon. Shannon has one last thing to say, more for the benefit of Kevins’ girlfriend than anything. SHANNON Besides, you’re kind of small anyway.
  • 48. Kevin stands there with nothing to say to that. His bottom lip sticks out slightly like he’s pouting. His girlfriend watches Shannon walk out, then looks at Kevin. CUT TO: INTERIOR LINDSAY HOME Jeff, Deanne, and Jake Lindsay are having dinner when Jackie walks through the front door. JACKIE Mom, dad, sorry I’m late. I went with Shannon over to Byerton to confront the jerk that fathered her baby. JEFF Well, next time you’re doing something like this, call first. JACKIE I will
  • 49. Jackie sits at the table, and puts some salad in her salad bowl before loading her plate with spaghetti and sauce. DEANNE How did it go? Is this guy gonna do right by Shannon? JACKIE Mom, are you kidding? This is a Byerton High School kid. He isn’t taking responsibility for anything. He looked right at Shannon, and said it isn’t his fault she’s pregnant. DEANNE (Sighs) Byerton High hasn’t changed since our day, hasn’t it honey? JEFF (With a sarcastic snort) Not a bit. Same immaturity, same feelings of entitlement JACKIE We play them the first game of the season. If I can, I’d like to give Mr Kevin Hendricks what he deserves.
  • 50. JAKE I wanna be there to see that JACKIE It’s next Saturday, at Elk Run Field, 1:00 Jake smiles, imagining what his little sister might do. Jeff, meanwhile is concerned about a newspaper column he was alerted to today. He turns the sports page to the column by Mark Kizlee. The title catches Jackies’ eye as well: ELK RUN, BASEBALL, OR SLUMBER PARTIES The column goes on to read: Elk Run baseball coach Allen Diller is looking to go a step further than last seasons semi final loss to Central. Is there a hard hitting Freshman that is the answer? No, Diller is turning to the defunct Girls Softball team for his answer. Jackie Lindsay, the star of last years Girls Softball State Champions. Unless Diller thinks her brother Jake has morphed
  • 51. into Jackie, he’s in for a long year. He may also be thinking that sleep overs and pillow fights will improve the team. JEFF Can you believe that? Kizlee still hasn’t grown up. Jackie looks down at her plate, and continues to eat, but looks very sad. JEFF Don’t worry Princess, you know what you can do. Jackie nods her head, and smiles. CUT TO: ONE WEEK LATER: ELK RUN HIGH BASEBALL FIELD The bleachers are full of fans for both schools.
  • 52. The crowds eyes turn to the parking lot at the sound of screeching tires. A Byerton student drives into the parking lot a little faster than necessary, and screeches into a parking space, almost hitting a couple of cars in the process. The student gets out of the car, looks at the other cars with contempt, and walks on toward the bleachers. Elk Run supporters holding their breath exhale with relief while Byerton supporters cover their mouths to suppress laughter. BYERTON FANS Oh James The security guard confronts James SECURITY GUARD Don’t ever do that again. James just looks at him like, “Who are you to lecture me?”
  • 53. CUT TO: ELK RUN DUGOUT The starters are ready to run out on the field. DILLER OK, You guys, let’s get this started right. The Elk Run players run out of the dugout, and onto the field to take their positions. Jackie runs out alongside Jason, and heads to Right Field. Catcalls from the Byerton dugout follow her out. BYERTON PLAYERS Hey, you’re too cute for this game Are you having a slumber party after the game? Can I come? I hear Shannon McLain is good, Are you good too? Jackie stiffens at the last two calls.
  • 54. JASON Relax Jackie. They’re nothing to get worked up about. Jackie smiles slightly, which makes Jason happy. He likes her smile. They warm up by tossing a ball back and forth until an Umpire calls for them to throw it in. The first batter for Byerton steps to the plate, and calls out in the direction of Jackie Lindsay. BYERTON PLAYER Hey sexy, I hope you’re ready. I’m coming to you. David Hill, on the mound has heard enough of the talk from the Byerton players, and has a response of his own. HILL You want to hit it to Jackie? You’re gonna have to do it off me, and I don’t think you can.
  • 55. The batter steps in. David Hill goes into his windup, and lets a letter high fast ball fly. The batter swings and misses as the Umpire calls strike one. David gets the ball back and smiles. The batter looks at the Umpire, then at David with his bottom lip in the pouting position. David winds and deals an off speed pitch toward the outside portion of the strike zone. The batter swings with a grunt that sounds slightly like a whine, and misses. The Umpire calls strike two, and the batter looks at him with frustration. JACKIE One more Dave, one more. JASON Awright Dave, you got em baby. Dave looks at the batter, goes into his wind, and delivers another fastball that the batter flails at and misses for strike three. He pounds the ground with his bat.
  • 56. JACKIE That’s one Dave, way to go The first batter goes back to the dugout looking like he’s on the verge of tears. The second batter steps up to the plate, and Dave Hill tries to pump another fast ball by him. This one swings and connects. The ball rockets down the right field line, but begins to curve foul. Jackie was playing more toward right center, but takes off running, thinking she has a chance to catch it. She keeps running even when the Umpire calls foul ball, reaches out, and snares the catch before pulling up just short of the fence. The Elk Run faithful erupt in applause, drowning out the Umpire calling out two outs. The batter had run down the line a little ways, and when Jackie caught the ball, he threw his head back in frustration. JASON That’s it Jackie. Good play Shannon is among those sitting in the bleachers, cheering on her friend
  • 57. SHANNON JAAAAAACKIIIEEEE………. The third Byerton batter steps in, thinking he’s got a shot at hitting one past Jackie, but his swing produces a weak dribble to David Hill, who tosses it to first for the third out. The Elk Run players run in to their dugout to applause from their fans. Byerton players take the field muttering alibis. DILLER Awright Dave, good start. Great hustle Jackie. You’re starting things off for us. Jackie grabs her batting helmet, and steps to the plate, looks up, and sees she’s facing Kevin Hendricks. She quietly simmers as Kevin has something to say KEVIN You still mad at me for what’s happened to Shannon? Or are you wanting a little of Kevin yourself?
  • 58. Jackie cocks her bat back over her shoulder as Kevin winds and delivers the pitch. Jackie swings and connects, a low line drive straight back to the pitchers mound that catches Kevin off guard until it connects with his groin, and ricochets into foul ground before anyone can react. When they do react, Jackie is standing on first base, and Kevin Hendricks is lying at the side of the pitchers mound in agony. The umpires call time while the Byerton coaches tend to Kevin. An Elk Run player is acting as first base coach, and leans over to Jackie. ELK RUN PLAYER( barely suppressing a laugh) Nice…uh….hitting, Jackie JACKIE You know how it is. Paybacks a bitch Camera shot of Shannon McLain, looking down toward her lap, but you can see her body shaking from laughter. Jake Lindsay is seated behind home plate, with his dad’s video camera. He got a perfect shot of what his sister just did, and is now laughing as he pans back and forth between the prone Kevin Hendricks, and Jackie standing on first.
  • 59. A new pitcher comes in for Byerton, and after some warmup pitches is ready for the next batter. As he winds and gets ready to deliver, Jackie adds insult to injury by taking off and sliding into second base with a steal. The catcher whips off his mask in frustration. The Elk Run batter, suppressing a laugh, lays down a bunt down the third base line. Nobody can recover it in time, and Jackie moves easily into third base, while the batter is safe at first. Jason is the next batter, and Jackie yells encouragement from third base. JACKIE C’mon Jason, bring me home. Jason does more than that, as he takes the first pitch, then slams the second into the left field corner. The left fielder fumbles the ball around, and can’t get the ball back to the infield. Jason, who’s really hustling, turns it into an inside the park homer. Elk Run has now taken a 3-0 lead, with no one out. CUT TO: LATER IN THE GAME The scoreboard shows that Elk Run scored two more runs in the first inning, and have added five more since then for a 10-0
  • 60. lead. Byerton is in their last opportunity to save face, and score a run or two to make their humiliation not so bad. Byerton players sitting on the bench are looking at the ground, doing their usual pouting, and offering no support of their teammates coming to bat. Two of the players who have an overblown sense of their importance, sit together on the bench and blame a couple of their teammates. With two outs in the last inning, the Byerton player at bat pops a simple fly ball to right. Jackie moves over a couple of steps, and makes the catch. She runs in with the ball, tapping gloves with Jason on the way in as the other players congratulate David Hill on his fine pitched game. The Byerton players come out of their dugout to congratulate Elk Run, until their coach, who has helped develop their poor sportsman attitudes, tells them not to, and to head for the bus. Shannon is the first to greet Jackie as she walks through the gate to go to her locker room. SHANNON Great game Jackie, I told you that you could play with the guys. They really ticked me off with what Byerton was saying to you during the game.
  • 61. JACKIE Eh, Byerton’s not worth it SHANNON Right, let’s go down to the strip mall, and hang out a bit JACKIE Okay, meet me at the car. Jackie continues to the locker room, with lots of supporters patting her on the back, and congratulating her. CUT TO: EXTERIOR: STRIP MALL This is a strip mall with an ice cream shop in the middle that has a patio where customers can sit and enjoy their ice cream. Several Elk Run students are just hanging around, still charged up from their baseball teams’ victory. Some are sitting around the patio, eating banana splits, and talking when Jackie and Shannon walk through. Several of the students acknowledge
  • 62. Shannon, and ask her how she’s doing. Most are congratulating Jackie for her plays in the game. Both girls order hot fudge sundaes at the counter, and sit at a table. SHANNON Wow, you’re receiving more congratulations now than you did for anything you did in softball JACKIE I know, I didn’t do anything any more special than I usually do. SHANNON Yeah, but you’re doing it on a guys team to another team of guys. Jackie looks at Shannon, and smiles SHANNON How do you like playing next to Jason Newberg in the outfield?
  • 63. JACKIE Okay, he’s a good guy. Why you ask? SHANNON Oh, just I’ve noticed a little how he is when you’re around. I think he likes you. JACKIE Oh Shannon. If anything he probably has big brother feelings SHANNON I don’t know…………. Jackie gives Shannon a look just as a waiter, a boy in their class, brings their order to the table. Both girls reach in their purses to get money to pay. WAITER
  • 64. Don’t bother, the manager was at the game today. She knows all about Kevin Hendricks and what he did to Shannon, and how he’s treating her. She can’t stand Kevin, and she loves you, Jackie, for racking him in the game. These hot fudge sundaes are on the house. JACKIE & SHANNON Thank you. Both girls eat the cherry on top, and stir the hot fudge and ice cream together before taking a bite, they express how good it is as David Hill comes to their table and sits down, closer to Shannon. HILL Shannon, I support you in whatever you want to do…. SHANNON Dave….. HILL
  • 65. I’m serious. I have something for you. I was going to give this to my sister for her baby, but now, I want you to have it for your baby. It’s a sleeper. I bought a yellow one, a neutral color. JACKIE What about your sister? HILL She lost her baby when she was five months along. I bought this outfit a couple of months before that. SHANNON Dave, I don’t know what to say. This is so sweet. HILL I think a lot of you. Ever since we went to prom last year. I didn’t really know how to express it to you. I have a couple of other things at home I bought for my sister that you can have. My sister told me to give it all to you. We heard about the hard time you got from that tool from Byerton.
  • 66. SHANNON Dave, I……..I’m overwhelmed. HILL Well, if you want, you can come to the house with me, and take a look at them. SHANNON I rode over here with Jackie. My car’s still at school HILL No problem, I’ll take you over there to pick it up. I live two blocks from school. SHANNON Okay. Jackie, do you mind? JACKIE
  • 67. Go ahead, I’m gonna finish this sundae, and head for home. Shannon leaves with David Hill. Jackie sits at the table, scraping fudge off the side of the plastic cup when Jason Newberg spots her and comes over to the table. JASON Hi Jackie, out celebrating our win? JACKIE Yeah, I was with Shannon, but she left with David Hill to look at some baby things. Jason didn’t know what to think of that, but goes on: JASON What are you doing now? JACKIE
  • 68. Nothing, I guess. I’m just gonna go home. JASON I was gonna do some skating. Have you ever done that? JACKIE When I was a little girl, maybe 10 years old. I haven’t since. JASON C’mon, you can skate with me. JACKIE (Smiling) Okay. CUT TO: EXTERIOR: OUTDOOR ROLLER SKATING RINK Jason is skating back and forth in the area where skaters change from street shoes to skates. As he does, Jackie is tying her laces tight. Finally, she’s ready.
  • 69. JACKIE I don’t know about this Jason. I don’t know if I stand up I can stay on my feet. JASON Just stand slow. Don’t get in a hurry Jackie does stand slow, and keeps her arms out for balance. She tries to move her feet, and when she does, her feet fly out from under her and she falls on her rear in front of Jason. She chuckles out of embarrassment. JASON Don’t try to move too fast. Here let me help you up Jason holds his hands toward Jackie. She takes them and boosts herself to her feet again. She starts to say something, but quickly realizes she’s still holding Jason’s hands. Jason doesn’t seem in any hurry to let go of her hands either. Jason notices Jackies’ hands feel soft and cool. Jackie notices Jasons’ are
  • 70. warm and feels a little rough, like he works with them a lot. They momentarily look into each others eyes. Jason finally comes to. JASON C’mon, I’ll hang on to you while you skate JACKIE Okay Jason skates backwards holding on to Jackies’ hands. They are doing good. Jackie feels comfortable, and they both laugh a little, until Jasons’ stumbles a little, and falls to the skating surface. He’s still holding Jackies’ hands, and pulls her down on top of him. They both laugh, until they look at each other, and realize the positions they’re in. JACKIE Uh, I probably should be going. I think my parents are expecting me home. Thanks for inviting me to skate. I had fun.
  • 71. JASON Oh yeah, okay. Hey this was fun. I’ll see you Monday. Okay? JACKIE (Smiling) Okay Jackie shuffles to the changing area to retrieve her shoes, still smiling a little, but also wondering about these feelings she’s starting to have. Jason continues to skate, but steals a look at Jackie shuffling off the floor, and feeling something for her. CUT TO: INTERIOR: LINDSAY HOME: NEXT DAY: JACKIES BEDROOM Jackie’s bedroom is about what you would expect from a sports fan with a Derek Jeter poster on the wall, trophies and plaques with a baseball motif adorn her desk, her dresser, and shelves on the walls. SPLIT SCREEN SHOWING SHANNON AND JACKIE: JACKIE So, what kind if things did David have for you? SHANNON Would you believe, one of those chairs that swings, some bibs, and a carrier. Combined with whatever I receive at the upcoming baby shower, I should be set a couple of months in advance. JACKIE When’s your baby shower? SHANNON Dunno, my mom wants to plan one.
  • 73. JACKIE Tell her I want to be in on the planning SHANNON I think she has you in mind for some of that. Also David’s mom. Would you believe David’s going to be my first steady boyfriend since we were sophomores. He has really over whelmed me with his caring, and he asked me to be his girlfriend……What did you do after we left? JACKIE I was about to go home, then Jason saw me and invited me to go roller skating with him. SHANNON Did you? JACKIE
  • 74. Yeah, I had a nice time. Jason’s a good guy. I started to feel weird though. SHANNON Weird? How was that? JACKIE I fell down, and Jason took my hands and pulled me up. He looked at me, and I looked at him, and I felt a weird connection to him all of a sudden. He hung on to my hands, and we skated around until he fell down and I fell on top of him. I had that weird feeling in my stomach and chest again. Then I told him I had to go home. He seemed to understand. When I looked into his eyes, he seemed to look like what I was feeling. SHANNON I know what it is. He has a lot of feelings for you, and maybe you’re starting to have feelings for him. JACKIE If he’s having feelings for me, why doesn’t he just ask me out?
  • 75. SHANNON He’s shy Jax. He knows how he feels about you, but since you two are teammates in baseball, he’s not sure if asking you for a date would compromise things on the ball field. JACKIE I don’t think it would. I can separate things. My life on the ball field, and my dating life. SHANNON All I can say is, be careful. You’ve got a good thing going here. JACKIE I will. I better go, American History test tomorrow, and I’m studying. SHANNON I know, same here. Talk to you tomorrow.
  • 76. SPLIT SCREEN DISSOLVES: SINGLE SHOT CLOSEUP OF JACKIE Both girls press the end button on their cell phones, and Jackie goes back to her studying, but wondering in the back of her mind about what Shannon was talking about. Could Jason be not only a guy she exchanges fist bumps and congratulations with, but someday a guy she shares a kiss with. CUT TO: ELK RUN HIGH: BASEBALL FIELD The players are warming up for a game with Schlossburg Prep. Jackie and Jason are tossing a ball back and forth. JASON I was reading the story about our game with North in the Post. They couldn’t seem to come up with enough words of praise for you. JACKIE
  • 77. Thank you. That isn’t all that’s happened lately. A sports magazine did an interview with me before the game, and they had a photographer taking pictures of me during the game. They also wanted me to pose for some pictures wearing my uniform top with a bikini bottom. JASON That’s crazy……. JACKIE Tell me about it. Then my Facebook page has been blowing up with friendship requests, mainly from guys from other schools. One guy from Byerton wrote a message on my page saying he’d like to be caught in a squeeze play with me. JASON You’re above all that, Jackie. You’re a senior in high school, and a baseball player, not a sex object. JACKIE Thanks, Jason. You understand that I don’t want a bunch of publicity, I just want to play baseball.
  • 78. JASON And your commitment to the game is why you’re so good. Jason saying the things he says makes Jackie smile what Jason thinks is the most beautiful smile he’s seen. CUT TO: SERIES OF HIGHLIGHTS OF GAME A series of video highlights show Jackie catching a flyball. Jackie running down a line drive, reaching out with her glove, and catching it in the tip of her glove, drawing loud applause from the crowd and her teammates. Jason at bat, Jackie on first base, Jackie running with the pitch and stealing second. Jason hitting a double off the centerfield fence, driving Jackie home. Jason standing on second applauding, Jackie giving a thumbs up. We hear a voice over from local TV anchors: “Marc is here with the sports. There’s a new high school sports phenom, and she’s right here in Colorado.” “ That’s right, Jackie Lindsay is her name, playing right field for the Elk Run High School Condors is her game. Jackie was an All

Jackie decided for her senior year she would take a chance, and try to play on the boys baseball team. The Condors are ranked first in the state with an undefeated record of 12-0, and Miss Lindsay is their leading hitter, batting .425, also ranked 1st in the state in that category. It’s Pretty In Pink Power at Elk Run, and Condor opponents are singing the blues.” As the voice over runs it’s course, we see the Elk Run team posing for their team picture. Coach Diller likes for the boys to show how much class they have, so they rent tuxedos for the picture. The only thing related to baseball the players wear is their gloves. Jackie poses in a long formal dress. While the boys sit in the bleachers, Jackie lies on a mat in front of the bleachers to protect her dress. She is lying on her left side, propped up on her elbow, with her glove on her left hand, and a bat in her right over her shoulder. Jackie pushes a cart up and down the aisles. Shannon is with her. Jackie checks her list and picks up items, and puts them in the cart. She and Shannon talk while she does so. SHANNON My mom’s really something. Daves’ mom is over at the house, and they’re discussing some things for the baby shower. She would like to discuss some things with you and your mom too. JACKIE Sure, I know my mom would love to, and your mom can call me with whatever she wants to discuss. SHANNON She’ll be glad to hear that. After she’s done discussing the baby shower for the day, She’ll be talking about who we’re sending invitations to for graduation. Have you and your mom discussed graduation much?
  • 81. JACKIE Oh yeah, Grandma and Grandpa Fox don’t get around very good anymore, so Aunt Cindy and Uncle Don are bringing them. On my dad’s side, Grandma and Grandpa are coming, Uncle Ben, Uncle Joe and their families, Aunt Theresa and her family, Aunt Susanne, Aunt Margie. My mom’s having fun with this too. SHANNON I think it would be fun with all this family around, you could also introduce them to Jason as your boyfriend. Jackie says nothing to this. SHANNON You two are still getting along, aren’t you? JACKIE Yes,(Puts an item in her cart) I’ve been waiting, thinking he’s going to express himself to me. He acts like he wants to, but is afraid.
  • 82. SHANNON Stay patient, I think when he does he’s gonna rock your world. Jackie smiles at that thought. A small girl of around six or seven years old approaches Jackie. LITTLE GIRL Excuse me, are you Jackie Lindsay? JACKIE (Smiling) Yes, I am, and this is my friend Shannon The little girl nods to Shannon, and goes on speaking to Jackie LITTLE GIRL I saw them talking about you on TV. My mom has taken me to a couple of your games. I think you’re the best. Can I have your autograph, please? JACKIE (Clearly moved)
  • 83. Sure, thank you sweetheart. What’s your name? LITTLE GIRL Alicia Jackie takes the pen and paper offered by the girl, signs it, and hands it back to the girl. Alicia takes it, and reads out loud what Jackie wrote. LITTLE GIRL To Alicia, Follow your dreams, and you will go far in life. Love, Jackie Lindsay Her eyes sparkle as she looks up again at Jackie, whose eyes sparkle too. LITTLE GIRL I’m playing on a tee-ball team right now. Next year, I’m going to play with the bigger kids. I wanna be just like you.
  • 84. Jackie kneels down to the girls level JACKIE You are so sweet, but you don’t have to be like me. Just be the best you that you can be, and you’ll be fine. LITTLE GIRL (Smiles, and thinks for a moment) Will you come watch one of my Tee-Ball games? JACKIE Sure, if I don’t have a conflict, I’d be glad to. Where and when do you play? LITTLE GIRL Elk Run Park. The Tee-Ball diamond on Thursdays JACKIE I know where that is. I’ll be glad to be there.
  • 85. The girl reaches up, and gives Jackie a big hug, then skips off to her mother. Jackie watches her, then stands up and wipes a tear from her eye she was so moved. SHANNON(Wiping a tear from her eyes) Jackie, that was so sweet. You made that little girls day. Jackie continues to look in the direction the little girl went, and smiles. CUT TO: VIDEO MONTAGE: ELK RUN GAME AGAINST BENTON Footage of Jackie making a running catch of a deep line drive. Hitting the ball into the gap in left center. The ball bounces to the wall, and Jackie legs it out into a double. Later in the game, Jackie hits a liner into center field and stops at first. Bentons’ first baseman congratulates Jackie. BENTON PLAYER Nice hit, baby
  • 86. He acts like he’s going to pat Jackie on the back. Instead, he places his hand on her butt cheek, cups it, and gives a little squeeze. JACKIE HEY, HANDS OFF PERVERT ELK RUN FIRST BASE COACH What was that about? You keep your hands off her. Jason comes to the dugout opening like he’s ready to take anyone on for mistreating his teammate and crush. The Umpire has heard the exchange going on and comes over. BENTON FIRST BASEMAN What?........What?....... UMPIRE
  • 87. Did you touch her? ELK RUN FIRST BASE COACH You touched her. Admit it UMPIRE Where did he touch her? ELK RUN FIRST BASE COACH He fondled her rear UMPIRE That’s all I need to hear. You’re out of the game Benton’s coach hurries on the field BENTON COACH What do you mean, he’s out of the game? What did he do?
  • 88. UMPIRE He grabbed Miss Lindsay’s rear, and fondled it. BENTON COACH What are you doing, Jack? You know better. We’re gonna talk on the bench. Jackie sighs, and looks at the ground CUT TO: EXTERIOR: PARKING LOT The door leading to the girls locker room opens, and Jackie steps out, looking dejected despite Elk Runs’ rousing victory. She can’t stop thinking about the Benton player fondling her butt. Why did he have to do that? As she walks to her car, she hears a car approaching behind her. It’s James, the reckless driver from Byerton, who almost hit a couple of cars before the Byerton-Elk Run game weeks before. James recognizes Jackie, and rolls down his window as he approaches.
  • 89. JAMES Hey Jackie Lindsay, I recognize you from our game against you at the start of the season. You’re having a great year. JACKIE Thanks JAMES And I like the way you fill out your uniform. Some of us from Byerton are placing bets about what’s in those pants. Jackie continues to her car, ignoring James. JAMES I want to get a look so we can settle the bets. C’mon with me JACKIE NO….Go away
  • 90. JAMES Aw c’mon. Can you at least tell me. We want to know what kind of panties you wear, and some of the guys want to know what color they are JACKIE LEAVE ME ALONE JAMES I’m betting you wear thongs, and they’re yellow. C’mon, you don’t know what you’re missing. The locker room door for the boys locker room opens, and Jason steps out. He hears the commotion, and recognizes Jackies’ voice. He hurries to see if she’s in trouble. JACKIE I can live with not knowing. Go away JAMES C’mon, I’ll be gentle
  • 91. Jackie reaches her car and fumbles with the keys trying to get the door open. James gets out of his car, and approaches Jackie, reaches out, and grabs her, and tries to force her to his car. JAMES C’mon baby. I’ll be the best you’ve ever had JACKIE NO..I’m not interested. Go away…..HELP..LET ME GO…HELP JASON What’s going on? Are you alright Jackie? James lets Jackie go when he sees Jason. At this same time, the campus security cop comes around the corner in his car, and seeing the confrontation going on speeds up and stops behind James car. James is huffing and puffing like he’s about to have a tantrum, and his bottom lip sticks out in a pout.
  • 92. SECURITY OFFICER I’ve seen you before, so I know I’ll recognize you if you come around again. And if you do you’re going to jail. James lets out a little whine, gets in his car, and drives away. Jackie is a little shaken, and begins to cry. Jason gently massages her shoulder. JASON I’ll follow you home to make sure he doesn’t follow you. SECURITY OFFICER Have you got a cell phone to call 911 if he does try to follow her? JASON Yes sir, and thank you.
  • 93. JACKIE Thank you officer The officer drives away. Jason starts for his car JACKIE Jason………. Jason stops and leans over to look in the drivers window of Jackies’ car. JACKIE Thank you so much. JASON(Smiling) No problem. CUT TO: INTERIOR: LINDSAY HOME
  • 94. Jackie walks in the front door as the rest of the family is sitting down at the dinner table DEANNE Hi honey, how was……..Jackie, what’s wrong? You look shaken. JACKIE First of all, we won the game, and I had a decent game. But after I hit a single their first baseman thought he could take liberties, and fondled my butt. JEFF I hope someone did something about it. JACKIE The Umpire did after I yelled and the coaches said something. They kicked him out of the game. His coach was mad at him for doing it. We could see him yelling at the kid in their dugout. Their coach apologized, but Coach Diller is still going to file a complaint with the state activities association.
  • 95. DEANNE I hope they stick it to him good. JACKIE Then after the game when I was going to my car, some little punk from Byerton drove up, and wanted me to get in his car and go with him. He said that kids at Byerton have bets going about what kind of panties I wear, and what color they are. JEFF Thank god you didn’t go with him. JACKIE I wasn’t interested in that over entitled punk. He kept insisting. He grabbed me and tried to force me into his car. I thought he was going to try to rape me. Jason Newberg came out, and made him stop. Then the security guard came, and told him if he saw him around Elk Run again he was going to jail. The kid left, and Jason followed me home. I’ve never been so glad to see a day end.
  • 96. Deanne goes over and gives her daughter a hug. DEANNE Yes, it’s OK now. You’re home, and you’re safe. Jackie takes a small bite of food, and tries to smile, but is not a really convincing smile. CUT TO: INTERIOR: ELK RUN HIGH Jackie is walking through the front door near the principals office. She noticed a police car in the parking lot, but really didn’t think much about it. The principal sticks his head out the office door. PRINCIPAL Jackie, can you come here for a moment? Jackie walks into the office, and sees the police officer.
  • 97. OFFICER Miss Lindsay, the security guard says you had a confrontation out here in the parking lot with a young man from Byerton High last night. JACKIE Yes officer. This guy wanted me to go with him, and when I refused he kept insisting. He grabbed me at my car, and tried to force me into his car, but my friend came out, and he backed off. I was afraid he was going to try to rape me. The security guard came about then and ran him off. My friend followed me home to make sure he didn’t try to follow me. OFFICER (Opens a mug shot book) Can you see him in these pictures? Jackie scans the pictures until she sees a familiar face, and points to the picture JACKIE
  • 98. That’s him officer OFFICER You’re sure? JACKIE Yes OFFICER You’re a very lucky young lady that you didn’t go with him. His name is James Thornton. After he failed to get you in the car, he went after a Byerton girl, saying he wanted to see her panties. JACKIE That’s what he said he wanted from me. OFFICER
  • 99. Well, she laughed him off, until they went driving on a deserted road, and he stuck his hand in her pants , pulled them down, and raped her. He’s in custody now. Your identification will help a lot. Thank you very much, Miss Lindsay. JACKIE Thank you officer. Jackie leaves the principal’s office and goes to her locker, running into Shannon. SHANNON If you didn’t have enough to deal with from that jerk from Benton, I hear that one of the immature children from Byerton tried to pick you up, and molest you. JACKIE Yeah, and wait until you hear this….. Jason comes down the hall and sees Jackie
  • 100. JASON Jackie, I’m glad to see you. I heard something about this guy last night. SHANNON And I was told you rescued Jackie last night JASON It was just good timing, just being in the right place at the right time. JACKIE If you heard that guy raped a Byerton girl after he failed with me, you heard right. A police officer came to school, and asked me to identify him from the mug shot book. JASON I’m relieved they got him. If they need me to help identify him, I will.
  • 101. JACKIE I don’t know if the officer is still there, but I bet Mr Moore knows how to get ahold of him. Jason reaches out, and briefly holds Jackies’ hand JASON I’m glad you’re okay JACKIE (Smiling) Thanks to you, I am Jason goes down the hall toward the principals’ office. Jackie watches him with a smile SHANNON He really is your knight in shining armor JACKIE
  • 102. Yes, he is. Oh Shannon, I’m really starting to have strong feelings for him. SHANNON You don’t need to tell me. I can see it in your eyes, just like I can see it in his. When you guys catch sight of each other, your eyes light up, and you almost go out of your way to be with each other. JACKIE Do you think maybe he’ll ask me to prom? SHANNON Wouldn’t surprise me. That may be when he opens up to you. Jackie smiles CUT TO: EXTERIOR: ELK RUN BASEBALL FIELD It’s the quarterfinal round of the state playoffs. Videos of the action show Jackie again running down a long fly ball and
  • 103. making the catch. The scoreboard shows the score tied in the bottom of the last inning. Bases are loaded, Jackie’s at the plate. Everyones expecting Jackie to let one rip, but she fools everyone with a squeeze play bunt. The perfect execution on the bunt allows the runner on third to slide home safe, while Jackie is safe on first. A newspaper headline shows “West-Elk Run For State Semi-Finals”. Jackie is again thwarting Wests attempts to go to the Finals with big defensive plays, including making a catch off her shoetops. Again the scoreboard shows the score tied in the last inning, and Elk Run at bat with the bases loaded. Jackie is again the batter in a clutch situation. This time she doesn’t have a chance to get a hit or a bunt. The pitcher is trying so hard to put one past her he throws it low. It hits the ground in front of Jackies’ feet and skips past the catcher and to the backstop. The runner on third scores, and Elk Run is on their way to the State Championship game. Elk Run players are jumping up and down in celebration. Jason starts jumping up and down with Jackie, and again, like at the skating rink, their eyes meet, and they look at each other for a moment. Then they resume their celebration. CUT TO: NEXT MORNING: ELK RUN HIGH PARKING LOT
  • 104. Jackie pulls into the parking lot, and into a space. Shannon pulls in almost right behind her, and parks in the next parking spot. JACKIE Shannon, I don’t think I can wait anymore. I have to tell Jason how I feel. SHANNON Jackie, you’re on the eve of playing for the state championship. Aren’t you afraid of something like that blowing his mind, and ruining his focus? JACKIE My mind has been blown for the last few weeks, since that night we were roller skating. I had a hard time sleeping last night, and when I did drift off, I started dreaming about him. About holding him, hugging him, kissing him. Maybe I’ll settle down after I get it over with. SHANNON Maybe you’re right.
  • 105. CUT TO: EXTERIOR: ELK RUN BASEBALL FIELD Baseball practice is just ending, and the players are heading for their locker rooms. Two people no one knows, or has seen before are in the bleachers. Their T-Shirts indicate they are from Lima High School, Elk Runs’ opponent for the state championship. When they see Jackie they start calling out to her. LIMA PLAYER 1 There she is, the Miss America who is going to try to beat us for the state title. LIMA PLAYER 2 Oh yeah, I’m getting scared. There is something we can do about it though. Upon hearing all this Jason is standing by the dugout to see what they might try to do
  • 106. LIMA PLAYER 1 What can we do? She’s so great. LIMA PLAYER 2 My parents are gone for the weekend, and I’m alone in the house. We can kidnap her, tie her up, and lock her in my basement. Then after the game, we’re can party, and we can take turns with her. All this is nothing more than an attempt at intimidation, but Jason has had it. He’s tired of the other teams trying to intimidate her, and sexually harassing her. Jason reaches into the bat rack and pulls out a fungo bat. Small, but enough to inflict damage if used right. Jason comes out of the dugout, twirling the bat like numchuks in his hands. The sight of that startles the two Lima players, and they begin to back up. Jackie is more startled by the hard look in Jasons’ eyes, replacing the soft pleasant look she’s used to. Shannon is in the stands, and angry as well. SHANNON YOU JERK. YOU LEAVE HER ALONE OR I’LL……..
  • 107. Shannon leans over with her arms wrapped around her stomach like she’s starting to go into labor. She screams with pain. David Hill runs to her. Jackie starts running to her from the field. JACKIE SHANNON……… The Campus Security Guard was nearby, hears the commotion, and comes around to the bleachers. He takes in what’s going on, and grabs his radio, and calls for an ambulance. The two Lima players look confused. The Security Guard quickly figures out what’s going on when he sees them SECURITY GUARD ALL RIGHT, YOU TWO, OUT OF HERE, OR YOU’RE UNDER ARREST.
  • 108. The two Lima players quickly leave. Jason puts the bat back, settles down, and becomes concerned for Shannon, sharing Jackies’ feelings. ESTABLISHING SHOT: MEMORIAL HOSPITAL CUT TO: INTERIOR: HOSPITAL WAITING ROOM David, Jackie, and a woman we quickly realize is Shannons’ mom wait for word on what’s happening. David has a very subdued expression on his face, quietly praying. Jackies’ eyes are red and swollen from crying. Mrs McLain is clutching rosary beads. The door opens, and the doctor comes in with a look of relief on his face. DOCTOR Mrs. McLain?......... MRS MCLAIN Yes doctor, how is she?
  • 109. DOCTOR She just had some false labor. I recommend bed rest for a couple of days, and no excitement. MRS MCLAIN Can we see her? DOCTOR Sure, she’s resting right now, but you can go right in MRS MCLAIN Thank You CUT TO: HOSPITAL ROOM Shannon is lying in bed, relieved she didn’t lose her baby, when her mother, Jackie and David walk in SHANNON
  • 110. Hey…… MRS MCLAIN How are you, sweetie? SHANNON I’m good mom. The doctor says I can’t have excitement for awhile, though. I guess that leaves out going to the State Championship game tomorrow. JACKIE You can still listen to it on the radio. AM950 is airing it. HILL We’ll beat them by the same score there as we will in person. Shannon smiles SHANNON
  • 111. I know you will baby. JACKIE I’m gonna go so you can rest. Take care. SHANNON You too, and kick butt tomorrow. Jackie leans over the bed, and gives Shannon a peck on the cheek before walking out the door. CUT TO: INTERIOR: HOSPITAL CORRIDOR Jackie walks down the corridor toward the exit. A nurse at the nurses station comes out and greets her. NURSE Excuse me, are you Jackie Lindsay? JACKIE
  • 112. Yes, I am NURSE It’s a pleasure to meet you. My name is Barbara Sherman. I was a cheerleader at Elk Run along with your mom. She was always such a sweet girl. I can see she passed that down to you. JACKIE Thank you. I’ll tell her I met you NURSE And your dad was always a great guy. I don’t see how he tolerated that jerk Mark Kizlee. I would be happy if he punched him out for what he just wrote about you. JACKIE About me……? NURSE
  • 113. Yeah (Hands Jackie the newspaper) Jackie opens the paper to the sports page and finds Kizlees column “Finally, The Joke Ends Tomorrow” Kizlee wrote, “It’s taken longer than expected, but finally the joke of a girl playing on a boys team has ended. When the game ends tomorrow, Lima High School will expose Elk Run High as a wanna be, and Jackie Lindsay as a fraud.” Jackie has seen enough. She puts the paper down, and walks out the door. By the time she reaches the parking lot, she’s again in tears. She takes out her cell phone and calls home. JACKIE Mom…? I’m not coming home for awhile. I need to think about some things. I’ll tell you when I come home. OK, Talk to you later. CUT TO: ELK RUN PARKING LOT
  • 114. Jackie tearfully drives into the parking lot at Elk Run. She parks the car, gets out, and walks up to the bleachers at the baseball field. Workers are putting up bunting for the state championship and other decorations, but Jackie is too upset to care. She walks a few steps up the bleachers, sits down, puts her head in her hands, and sobs uncontrollably. A few seconds later, Jason walks up to the bleachers. He came by just to think about tomorrows game, and settle down a little to help him sleep. He hears a sob, turns and sees Jackie sitting in the stands crying. He hurries up the bleachers to her side. JASON Jackie…? Jackie, what’s wrong? JACKIE Jason, I’m glad to see you. Everything’s wrong. First, I have a guy grope me, then someone tries to rape me, then someone comes along and talks about kidnapping me and holding me hostage. If that’s not enough, my best friend almost loses her baby, and that idiot Kizlee calls me a fraud for trying to play
  • 115. boys baseball. Jason, I’m so frustrated. I’m so glad it’s going to be over after tomorrow. JASON Jackie, you’re not a fraud. You have been our leader. From the first day of practice, everyone has picked up their game because of your example. Kizlee is a tool who can go to hell. JACKIE Thanks Jason. You’re a great guy. You’ve been there when I’ve needed someone. We had a great time roller skating that one night. You were there when that loser from Byerton tried to rape me, and earlier when that Lima punk talked about kidnapping me. You being here for me has meant a lot to me. I’ve had these feelings inside me for awhile, and I haven’t been able to get them out before, but I really care about you, and I want to be with you. Jasons’ eyes light up. JASON
  • 116. Jackie, I don’t know what to say. I feel the same way, and the way you said it touched me so much. I care about you so much and I want to be with you too. Jackie smiles thru her tears. She reaches up and puts her arms over Jason’s shoulders and around his neck. Jason wraps his arms around Jackie’s middle, and hugs her tight. Jackie returns the hugs, until they pull their heads back, and look each other in the eye. Their lips meet in passionate kissing, until Jackie pulls her head back JACKIE Wait a minute, baby. I hate to stop, but we have a game to play tomorrow. We shouldn’t get carried away. JASON You’re right, sweetheart. We’ve got tomorrows game, but after that, we have all the time in the world for each other. JACKIE Right. C’mon we need our rest for tomorrow.
  • 117. Jason gets up first, and takes Jackies hand to help her up. They walk hand in hand down the bleachers, and out to the parking lot. Jason walks Jackie to her car, takes her keys and opens the door to let her in, and gives her a kiss before walking to his car. CUT TO: INTERIOR: LINDSAY HOME Jackie walks in the front door. Her mother is on the couch, watching television. DEANNE Jackie, what happened? JACKIE Everything was fine, until practice ended. Two guys from Lima were there, and started talking about abducting me and holding me hostage until after the game. It was just a stupid thing to try to intimidate me, but after being groped and nearly molested, It didn’t sound like simple intimidation. Anyway, Shannon was there, and she became upset, and went into false
  • 118. labor. She was taken to the hospital by ambulance. She’s fine, and the baby is fine, but she needs bed rest for a couple of days. Then, I was alerted to the column by Kizlee, saying he’s glad the season’s ending tomorrow because I’m a fraud. DEANNE(Sighs) And I’ll be glad when the day comes the paper decides he’s a fraud, and fires him. I’d hate to be there if he’s alone in the same room with your dad(pause)For all you’ve been through, you seem a little more upbeat than when you called earlier. JACKIE (Beaming) Mom, I’m in love DEANNE(Taken back) That’s great, honey. Who’s the guy? JACKIE Jason. He’s been so wonderful to me, so caring. He saved me from being raped, He made those guys who talked about
  • 119. kidnapping me back off. He consoled me earlier, and made me feel so good. He kisses good too. DEANNE(Chuckles) You know your father’s going to want to get to know him. JACKIE I know, Jason told me everything that I felt about him, he feels the same about me. DEANNE I could tell that even before this. He has always acted so happy when you’re around. And lately, you’ve lit up when he comes into a room . JACKIE Shannon told me the same thing. How come I’m the last one to realize this? DEANNE
  • 120. Don’t know, Princess JACKIE Well, I’ve got a game tomorrow. Good night, mom. DEANNE Good night. Jackie heads upstairs to her room. Jeff comes out from his study. JEFF Well, what did she say? DEANNE Give you the short version, everything that’s happened finally caught up to her and overwhelmed her. JEFF
  • 121. Bless her. She doesn’t deserve any of it. DEANNE And your old friend, Kizlee, is saying things against her. Just rubbing salt in her wounds. JEFF I actually think in the long run, all this is going to make her tougher. She’s developed a”If you don’t like it, screw you” attitude, and if no one else likes it, that’s tough. DEANNE Also Jeff, your daughter, your little princess, just informed me she’s in love. JEFF Really….? Am I gonna need to buy a shotgun? DEANNE
  • 122. Oh Jeff, I hardly think so. It’s Jason Newberg. Jackie says he’s been very good to her. Jake overhears all this and comes in the room. JAKE Yeah dad, Jason was a sophomore on the team my senior year. He’s a good hearted person, and I think he’s had a crush on Jackie anyway. I think he would be very good to Jackie. JEFF Good enough for me. But I still want to meet him. CUT TO: NEXT MORNING: ELK RUN BASEBALL FIELD Jackie pulls into the parking lot about two hours before game time. She’s talking on her cell phone to Shannon. SPLIT SCREEN: SHANNON AND JACKIE JACKIE
  • 123. I couldn’t believe it, Shannon. Once I started talking I couldn’t stop. Everything I felt, I said. And after I finished he told me he felt the same way, that I said everything he felt. And when he kissed me it was the most wonderful feeling I’ve ever had. SHANNON Jackie, I couldn’t be happier if this was me. JACKIE I have to admit, you were right at the start of practice, Shannon. SHANNON I was right? On what? JACKIE Don’t you remember? You said that amongst all the guys was a potential boyfriend. SHANNON
  • 124. And you have the best one of the bunch. JACKIE I agree. You have a good one in Dave as well. I better go inside and get dressed. You rest up, and behave. SHANNON And you raise hell, and kick butt. SPLIT SCREEN DISSOLVES: SINGLE SHOT OF JACKIE Jackie presses the button, ending the call. Jason pulls his car in the parking lot, and parks next to Jackie. JASON Hi baby, you ready to play? JACKIE Ready as I’ll ever be
  • 125. Jason leans down and they kiss. Then they go to their locker rooms. CUT TO: BOTTOM OF THE FIRST David Hill held Lima to no hits in the first. Jackie, as usual, leads off for Elk Run. She steps up to the plate, looks at the pitcher, and sees it’s the guy who threatened to kidnap her. Jackies eyes grow cold, and intense as she takes her practice swings. She hears the voices from the past, “I hear Shannon McLain is good, are you good too.””C’mon baby, I’ll be the best you ever had”. “We can kidnap her, tie her up, and lock her in my basement.””We can take turns with her”. The anger is welling up in her. The pitcher sees this too, and flinches a bit LIMA PITCHER Nothing personal, OK? Jackie doesn’t react. The pitcher tries to come with something down the heart of the plate, daring Jackie to swing. Jackie does, and the fans debate what was louder, the crack of the bat, or the crack of the pitchers’ ankle breaking when the ball came back and nailed him on the ankle. The ball deflected into foul
  • 126. territory before anyone could react. While the pitcher screamed with pain in front of the mound, Jackie ran to first safe. The first base coach leaned over to her. FIRST BASE COACH Jackie, do me a favor and remind me to never piss you off, OK Jackie laughs. In a video montage: Jackie comes around to score when the hit and run was on and the next batter hit the ball in the right field gap for a triple. Jason hits his second inside the park homer of the season when the ball hits the fence and eludes the outfielders. Mark Kizlee is seated in the right field bleachers. He wanted to be seated behind Jackie Lindsay as she went thru her downfall. Now it seems like she’s stronger than ever, but Kizlees’ arrogance won’t allow him to admit it. The video montage continues with Elk Run commiting a couple of errors allowing Lima to score to catch up. Jackie makes a big play with a running catch to end a Lima rally.
  • 127. CUT TO: FINAL INNING: TIED SCORE The scoreboard shows Lima 6, Elk Run 6 after Jackie ended another rally with a running catch. Bottom of the last inning. This time Jackie’s leading off the inning DEANNE & JEFF C’mon Jackie honey, you can do it. Jackie steps up to the plate, and takes a deep breath. She can see Mark Kizlee sitting smugly in the right field bleachers. Her eyes grow cold again at the sight of another tormentor. Her karma has seemed to direct things in getting back at those that disrespect her, and now she slowly swings her bat back and forth before bringing it back over her shoulder. The pitcher goes into his wind, and delivers. Jackie swings, and a loud crack sends the ball hurtling into right field, climbing higher and higher. The rightfielder turns, and runs back toward the fence. He runs out of room at the fence, but the ball isn’t coming down, it keeps going. Mark Kizlee isn’t paying attention to it. He’s typing away on his laptop about Jackie Lindsay’s downfall. However, the ball keeps going over the fence, thru about a half dozen pairs of hands, before it connects with Mark Kizlees’
  • 128. head. Kizlee looks up in shock, and his laptop falls off his lap before his eyes roll to the back of his head, and he slumps over unconscious. Jackie lets out a scream, and jumps in the air at the sight of her game winning homer. The first base coach makes sure she touches first base before she runs around the bases, screaming with joy. She reaches home, and is mobbed by her teammates, and a few fans from the stands. Coach Allen Diller finally reaches her. DILLER Jackie, I’m so happy to have coached you this year. You might be the best athlete I’ve ever coached. Jackie beams with pride. She finally sees Jason, and they start jumping up and down. They stop and hug. JASON There was something I forgot to ask you last night JACKIE
  • 129. What was that? JASON Will you go to prom with me? Jackie smiles JACKIE YES! I’ll go with you. They start passionately kissing. Up in the stands, Jeff and Deanne Lindsay are watching the celebration. Deanne catches the sight of their daughter making out with her new boyfriend. Taps Jeff’s shoulder and points to it. Jeff smiles at his little princess and her new boyfriend. They stop kissing when a state official comes out, and hands them the state champions’ trophy. Jackie, Jason and some of their teammates have their hands under the trophy, and hold it up for everyone to see. In the midst of the excitement, Jason leans over to Jackie. JASON My parents are going to a party tonight, and will be out late. Care to come to my house.
  • 130. JACKIE (With a smile) Okay CUT TO: INTERIOR: NEWBERG HOUSE The screen is black, until the door opens and the light is turned on. It’s Jasons’ bedroom. Jason and Jackie enter passionately making out, until Jackie sits on the bed and Jason sits next to her, moving the hem of her dress up while massaging her thighs and kissing her neck. JACKIE (Breathlessly) Jason……..Be gentle. JASON I wouldn’t think of being any other way
  • 131. As he says this, he slides his hand up Jackies’ thigh, massaging and caressing it, and moving the hem of her dress higher. Jackie begins to moan softly. Jason and Jackie begin passionately kissing again. Jason takes his other hand, and feels up Jackie’s back until he finds the zipper of her dress, and begins to unzip it. CUT TO: INTERIOR: McLAIN HOME Jackie is visiting Shannon to see how she’s feeling. While Shannon talks, Jackie is smiling, listening to her. SHANNON You guys played great yesterday. You had an unbelievable game. Dave pitched well, and Jason was great hitting as well as fielding. I couldn’t help getting excited as I listened, and your homer to win the game was the best part. I heard it hit Kizlee in the head and knocked him out. JACKIE
  • 132. It did, and the line drive in the first inning that broke the leg of their pitcher. Would you believe that was the guy that was talking of kidnapping me, and holding me hostage until after the game? SHANNON (Shaking her head) You’ve got some karma, or something. (Looks at Jackie curiously) Is there something else going on? You’ve got a glow about you big enough to light this house. JACKIE I shouldn’t say anything, but you’re my best friend so I can tell you. After the game, after we celebrated on the field, Jason invited me to his house because his parents were going to be out. We went over there and made love on Jasons’ bed. SHANNON (Lets out a little shriek) That’s great. How was it? How was he?
  • 133. JACKIE It was just like the way Jason is. Gentle, caring, very sweet. After we were done, he let me take a shower and freshen up. My mom and dad knew I was with him, but they didn’t suspect anything else. Also, he asked me to go with him to prom. SHANNON That is really great. I think he is going to be very good for you JACKIE So do I. All of this has happened so fast. And I already care about him so much. SHANNON I knew that if you two got together, he would rock your world. Jackie smiles

They also place a sash on Jackie and give her a bouquet of flowers. Jason and Jackie stand to applause from their school mates, holding hands and smiling. They look at each other, and Jason leans down to give Jackie a kiss. They then go out on the dance floor for the King and Queen dance to “Unchained Melody” by the Righteous Brothers

Jackie is wearing a bikini, but she has covered it by wearing one of Jason’s t-shirts. Jason has an arm over Jackie’s shoulders, and Jackie is holding his hand in hers.
  • 137. JASON If there is one regret I have, it is that I didn’t tell you how I feel about you first. I was so shy about it, I waited until you told me your feelings first JACKIE It doesn’t matter who was first. The important matter is that we know how we feel about each other JASON True, but I do want to be first to say this to you. Jackie looks at him with a slight smile as she waits for his words JASON Jackie………I love you. JACKIE
