2. INTRODUCTION
Preventaloss & Associates is a company offering a full and comprehensive claims related

Preventaloss was registered as a closed corporation during the year of 2003.

9. DISCUSSION ON GENERAL INVESTIGATION PROCEDURES
SUMMARY OF STEPS TAKEN IN THE INVESTIGATION PROCESS
-AUTO THEFT AND HI-JACKING
1. We obtain a copy of the SAPS circulation printout. The circulation details are
checked by us for the date, time, and place of the loss, whether the engine and
chassis numbers correspond with registration detail, which is noted as the
complainant and owner, etc. We ensure that the particular insurer’s interest has
been recorded on the circulation / SAP records.
2. A NATIS information printout is obtained and checked by us for ownership details,
previous owners, whether the vehicle is financed, etc.
3. We obtain a printout of confirmation as to whether the client or driver at the time
of loss holds a valid driver’s license and whether there are any endorsements or
restrictions listed.
4. We have SAPS records checked for any previous cases reported by the insured such
as auto theft, housebreaking, etc. As this may reflect a modus operandi or affect a
possible non-claim bonus.
5. The SAPS investigating officer is interviewed and the case is discussed with him /
her. A copy of the A1 statement is obtained and information is then compared with
the claim information as supplied by the insured.
6. A letter of non-recovery is obtained from the SAPS.
7. A credit check is done on the client or driver in order to determine whether
possible financial problems exist.
8. After obtaining all of the relevant information of the theft we have an interview
with the insured to verify that all information is true and correct and to clear up
any discrepancies, if any is noted.
9. The scene of the crime is visited and enquiries are made in the surrounding area to
obtain outside information or witnesses to assist us in our investigation and for
verification of the claim. Photos are also taken of the scene of incident.
10. SUMMARY OF INVESTIGATION PROCESS - MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENT
1. We obtain a copy of the SAPS accident report and confirm the description of
events on the report. Any witnesses and third parties involved are interviewed
and their version of events obtained. We determine whether the SAPS are
investigating a criminal case and interviews are conducted with police personnel
who visited the scene, as well as breakdown personnel, ambulance personnel, etc.
2. We visit the scene and possible witness’s living / working at or near the scene are
interviewed. We search for possible evidence such as skid marks, etc. and
photograph such.
3. We inspect the vehicle involved and check for roadworthiness, whether tyres
have been changed after the accident, for any signs of alcohol or medication inside
the vehicle, the position of the driver seat, etc. During this inspection, we do an
assessment at an extra cost of R250.00, if requested.
4. We interview the insured or the driver at the time of the accident and obtain a
description of the events.
5. A copy of the identity document and drivers license is obtained from the insured
and or driver. A driver’s license check is done and confirmation obtained.
6. A random insurance check is performed in order to confirm any existing no claims
bonus and whether possible dual insurance exists.
7. If any reasons are found relating to issues such as drunken driving, questions as to
the identity of the driver at the time of the accident etc., we obtain all relevant
evidence needed in order to repudiate such claim.
8. We supply vehicle values.
9. A full report is submitted with our recommendations and all relevant
attachments.
11. NON - MOTOR CLAIMS / BURGLARY / THEFT INVESTIGATIONS
1. We obtain a copy of the statement made to the SAPS as well as a copy of the list of
stolen property supplied to them by the insured, which we compare with a list,
which the insured compiles with us.
2. The scene of loss is visited at which time we inspect the alleged point of entry and
exit. During this visit, notes are made relating to existing security measures such
as burglar proofing, safety doors, alarm Systems, etc.
3. The client is interviewed and a list of stolen property is compiled. During this
process, the insured is requested to describe the name and model of electrical
goods stolen, etc. We also request proof of quantum where possible and obtain a
statement regarding the loss and all relevant circumstances. If requested by our
clients, we complete an inventory of the house content at this time.
4. We check for items stolen which the insured purchased by means of HP finance
and remove these from the claim as they are insured under the particular HP
agreement.
5. We check for possible previous insurance and any similar claims in the past where
similar items were claimed.
6. SAPS records are checked in order to determine whether any history of similar
cases exists.
7. Should circumstances suggest that the insured had moved into his / her current
residence recently, inquiries are done as to determine whether a removals
company was used? We then contact the removals company in order to obtain a
copy of the furniture / items inventory and compare it with the existing items in
the house as well as the items stolen. We also inquire as to whether any claim for
possible losses was submitted to the
Removals company insurance at the time.
8. Should we determine that the insured has inflated his / her claim or that the
possibility of fraud exists, the situation is discussed, and we make a
recommendation in our report. If however the claim is found to be a genuine
insurable loss, we submit a preliminary report and await insurer instruction to
proceed with settlement.
12. FIRE INVESTIGATIONS
o Veldt
o Residential
o Commercial
On receipt of your instruction we will peruse the documentation to evaluate the
course of action.
This investigation is complex and requires expert analyses by the CSIR/ Hexagon
and or a private expert fire investigator. They will also be able to obtain samples
from the scene to be tested for flammables. Because it can become necessary to
give expert evidence in court we suggest the use of the Hexagon / CSIR in this
regard, they are independent and has all the resources for a comprehensive report
that can be used as evidence in court.
Due to the nature of this investigation and its complexity it is important to be on
the scene as soon as possible after the event. A lot of evidence can and will be lost
if this is not the case.
FRAUD
Preventaloss has extensive experience in insurance and other fraud and corruption
investigations.
This can be where a private individual or a company claims falsely in respect of a
loss under an insurance policy.
Alarm investigations
We are highly specialized with the investigation of alarms that were
activated. This is a specialized field of investigation and we will forward this
proposal / slideshow that will indicate the loopholes in the system, if
required. Our fees are very reasonable for investigation on all burglary related
incidents. (Assessors normally have no idée how to interpret the panel event
log and or alarm company event log. Here we can be of great assistance for a
nominal fee.)
Please contact us for more information in this regard.
13. GENERAL (MATTERS) INVESTIGATIONS:
This office can assist with matters reported to the SAPS in order to expedite the
investigations by obtaining relevant information, witnesses, and statements ext.
TRACING OF THIRD PARTIES

on the persons involved.
