Curaçao Tourism:
A Sector on the Path to Sustainable
Development
Presented by: Ghatim Kabbara, CEO of Curacao Tourist Board

2013 Energy Seminar: Energy Retrofitting of Existing Buildings
Come gather 'round people
               Wherever you roam
       And admit that the waters
           Around you have grown
            And accept it that soon
You'll be drenched to the bone
                If your time to you
                      Is worth savin'
  Then you better start swimmin'
Or you'll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin'.

                       ~ Bob Dylan
20th Century consumption and
unconstrained growth is no longer
   realistic in the 21st Century
The amount of bio-productive land needed to produce
what is consumed (food, clothing & shelter) by….

An average American citizen every year is about 10
hectares;

An average North European every year is about 6
hectares;

A sustainable lifestyle is where the rate of consumption
can be sustained by 2 hectares of bio-productive land!
We are currently using resources at a
rate 25% greater than the Earth’s
       ability to renew them.
The Business Challenge
How can my business maintain growth and
profitability while minimizing the negative impact
  on the global/local environment, community,
               society, or economy?
Business and Sustainability are not
          incompatible…
…Both share the common goal to increase
efficiencies in the way we produce and
           consume resources...
The Difference: A Paradigm Change
Developing sustainable business
practices can improve your business;
And the world in which your business
              operates.
¿What is the Path to Sustainability?
“Around here, however, we don’t look
backwards for very long. We keep moving
forward, opening up new doors and doing new
things, because we are curious… And curiosity
keeps leading us down new paths.”

                          ~ Walt Disney
In the 21st century, to be successful in any business –
including tourism and experience – companies need a
business model, with an innovation strategy that
focuses on sustainability.

Be Curious about Barcelona
POLICY FOR RESPONSIBLE TOURISM:
Aware of the importance of maintaining
a responsible tourist development in
economic, social, environmental and
cultural terms, and assuming the
principle of the World Charter of
Sustainable Tourism, the city of
Barcelona is committed to promoting a
touristic model based on respect, and
the preservation and appreciation of the
resources that make up our city.

Our aim is therefore to establish a
commitment with the citizens,
contributing in this way to the projection
and consolidation of Barcelona as an
innovative tourist destination, and one
that is leader, sustainable,
differentiated, and of quality.
Stimulo's Sprightly
Ah-Bre LED Lamp is
Made from 50%
Recycled Materials
Created by Barcelona-based
Stimulo, Ah-Bre is a svelte, plant-
like LED table lamp that is made
from 50% recycled materials.
Barcelona-based CFS Arquitectes renovate a
1918 home into a modern dwelling that
maximizes comfort and energy-efficiency. This
renovation, which only took 4 months, not only
has created a home with excellent energy
performance, but it even used bio-construction
materials to reduce its environmental impact!
The world’s first fully integrated wind-
powered EV charging station has been
installed in Barcelona, Spain. The charging
station, known as the Sanya Skypump, was
unveiled by Urban Green Energy and GE, and
it combines UGE’s cutting-edge vertical wind
turbines with GE’s electric vehicle (EV)
charging technology.
Capella Garcia Arquitectura has designed this
groundbreaking green side-wall, which brings
a new form of "Vegitecture" to Barcelona.

When an adjacent building was demolished, a
stark blank wall was left behind - so the
designers completely transformed this
eyesore with a freestanding 21-meter-tall
galvanized steel structure adorned with lush
green plants.

Not only does this new type of vertical garden
improve the neighborhood's aesthetics, but it
has all kinds of environmental benefits as well.
Architect Pedro Scattarella has transformed
everyday materials used in shipping and
packaging into a rustic and inventive interior
for a pizzeria in Barcelona.

Los Sopranos restaurant is made up of
shipping containers, reconstructed freight
boxes and packing crates. The subtle hues of
the shipping materials are offset with
brightly colored chairs, and bold red tiling
leading to the restaurant’s brick oven.
With a sophisticated passive solar design and
an eye-catching facade, the Radio Nacional
de España headquarters by architects
Ravetllat-Ribas brings sustainable building to
the bustling city of Barcelona. The building's
complex and rigorous façade is able to screen
the sun on bright and hot days, but still allow
for daylight to permeate through every room.

The footbridge also serves as a horizontal
bris-soleil to shade the building on the south
side. And thus this smart combination of
horizontal and vertical shading protects the
building from solar thermal heat gain,
thereby reducing its need for air-
conditioning.

While technology may be a big part of the
Radio Nacional Headquarters, it’s the
architect’s sensibility towards sustainable
strategies that achieve much of the energy
savings in the building, including a reduction
of 50% in overall carbon emissions!
One more thing…
Curaçao is an island on the move. It understands that complacency
doesn’t move people forward – curiosity does. It’s the pathway to
creativity and innovation; the same path walked by the leaders,
artists, entrepreneurs and futurists whose contributions and larger-
than-life personalities have shaped – and continue to shape – this
tiny Caribbean nation.

Everyone in this room belongs to the next generation of dreamers
and doers that will shape the future of Curaçao – We want to
welcome your big ideas, your imagination, your creativity and your
courage.
Masha Danki!
