Where does the software fit in?
The Digital Front End (DFE) is the brain of a digital production press.
The majority of the processing required to prepare a job for the print engine
itself is carried out within it.

The secret is to design your software with your press
• Think about hardware and software in parallel
• Every Digital Front End is as unique as your press and should be
tuned to it

Challenges we’ve helped customers solve

Inferior quality on “challenging” media
Problem: Mottling or streaking because of high-speed inkjet drop placement
Solution: Compensate for it in the DFE by using software to diagnose and apply the
appropriate screening tools to vary the amount of ink delivered from the inkjet heads
in any one location

Output is too slow
Problem: keeping up press speed versus cost
Solution: Ramp up the RIP software in the DFE so it outpaces the press.

Brand colors don’t match
Problem: How do you match brand colors
accurately when you don’t have spot colors?
Solutions: Maximise the gamut with the
proper profile for the press, inks and media
using software
Make sure your DFE supports extended
gamut ink sets
Provide a way of accurately emulating brand
colors into your process inks

Matching analogue output
Problem: It’s not all digital
Solution: Use software to manage the output on each device (i.e. device link
profile, correct screening, managed output, etc.)
