...it became the first citizen-lead initiative
without corporate funding ever to pass in
the city's history.

Citizens changing things now so
the future can exist!
3. It started with one man and a vision for a greener
Denver!
“Bernie Sanders said to get
involved at the grassroots
level, so I decided I needed
to act now.”
-Brandon Rietheimer
(Campaign Manager & Visionary)
4. With less than 60 unpaid volunteers and $5,000

Our dedicated Green Roof Volunteers!
7. Development in Denver: An Environmental Nightmare
In 2017, Denver ranked 11th worst
in the nation for air quality and
3rd worst in the nation for the
Urban Heat Island Effect.
In 2016, solar PV panels only
supplied 1% of Colorado’s total
electricity supply (Energy information
Administration, 2016)
8. Development in Denver: A New Opportunity
Urban Rooftops represent under-utilized
space that could be…
generating electrical energy (solar panels)
reducing heat (decreasing the need for A/C)
improving stormwater drainage
creating food & community space
improving air quality
providing habitat for at-risk pollinators
9. Our mission
to require newly constructed
buildings (over 25,000 ft2) in
Denver to include a
combination of green roofs,
white roofs, solar panels,
and/or LEED standards.
10. Denver Green Roof Volunteers: Determination
Countless hours spent distributing
flyers and collecting signatures...
12. Resourcefulness
Due to limited funding, our
volunteers showed up for rallies
and made their own signs to make
our voices heard around the city!
13. Against All Odds…
An opposition group was formed to defeat
our ballot measure
This group printed thousands of flyers, ran
TV commercials, and hired door-to-door
canvassers
They raised $41,500 in campaign
donations — more than six times that of
The Denver Green Roof Initiative!
14. AND WE WON!!
The Denver GREEN Roof Street Team
VICTORY FOR DENVER
VICTORY FOR ALL!!
