2. CAUSES FOR THE RAPID GROWTH OF
POPULATION
1. Declining death rate:
The main reason for the rapid rate of increase in population in India
is that, the death rate has been declining rapidly.
It was 42.6 per 1000 in 1911. But it has decreased to 8.7 per 1000 in
2001 and 7.2 per 1000 in 2011.the decline in death rate is
tremendously contributing to the increase in population.
Causes for the declining death rate:
1.control of epidemics
2.elimination of famines
3.decline in the incidence of malaria and tuberculosis
4.expansion of medical facilities
5.low infant mortality
6.spread of education
7.improvementbin the nutrition level etc.

POPULATION
2.Increasing birth rates:
The birth rates is still high in India and is an important factor
contributing to the rapid growth of population in the country.
Birth rate was 49.2 per 1000 in 1911.it has decreased to 23.1 per
thousand in 2001 and slightly decreased to 22.1 per 1000 in 2011.
While the death rate has declined significantly from 42.6 to 7.2 per
1000 in the same period. thus the gap between the birth rate and
death rate has widened. as a result the net rate of increase of
population in the country is 1.5 percent. this is the most significant
factor behind the explosive rate of increase in India's population.
4. CAUSES FOR THE RAPID GROWTH OF
POPULATION
Factors affecting birth rate:
In India during the past 60 years ,birth rate has not declined
significantly, because a number of economic ,social , political ,
religious and other factors continue to contribute to high fertility.
A. Economic factors:
1.Predominance of agriculture
2.Poverty
3.Slow urbanisation process
4.Predominance of villages
5.Hesitation to adopt family planning

POPULATION
B. Social factors
1.Universal marriage
2.Early marriage
3.Religious and social superstitions
4.Joint family system
5.Illiteracy
6.Polygamy

POPULATION
C. Geographical factors
Various geographical factors are also contributing to India's
population growth. The tropical climate of India is partly
responsible for high birth rate. In the tropical climate girls and
boys attain puberty at an early age .This contributes to the
longer span of reproductivity and birth rate.
D. Lack of population education
E. Political factors
The present political and administrative system prevailing in
the country is also contributing to the rapid growth of
population.
